Ch.49 Ebeneezer Kringledick by Bob Van Dyne
Hacking the Afterlife with Jennifer Shaffer, Luana Anders and Charles Dickens HERE'S A REPLAY OF LAST YEAR'S CHRISTMAS HOLIDAY PODCAST It sounds bizarre, I know. We interviewed Charles briefly in the book "Backstage Pass to the Flipside" so his presence didn't throw me for a loop. I really did look at a note on my cellphone this morning about a story that he's in - and his pal Washington Irving. And for him to say "that's why I stopped by" is mind bending to say the least. We start off the podcast with Jennifer revealing that her mom is in the hospital, and her emotions around the loss of her dad, five years ago. He's come by a number of times to chat with us, including taking us on a trip to an Akashic library, as well as going to visit the classroom on the flipside where he described his physics teacher in detail. The woman has 8 arms, and is known as Ma Durga on the planet - no other way to put it, as we've spoken with her a number of times, and Jennifer has had long conversations with her. The point isn't that a "deity from earth" is hanging out in the flipside, but rather people on earth have identified a teacher on the flipside as a deity. In this case, I knew that Dickens had visited Washington Irving, I know that he purchased some property in Cairo Illinois (a land scam that claimed it was going to be the next "city on the Nile") I know that he visited a garment factory in Boston where he asked them to tell him some local ghost stories. I know that when he visited Irving, Irving's uncle had taken up resident at his home and his name was Ebeneezer. As Jennifer pointed out, she never could have guessed that name - but Charles was specific about who greeted him when he crossed over (a deaf child, perhaps the model for Tiny Tim) and how his book was about the financial politics of the day, the Victorian era when the rich got richer and the poor died of starvation. Jennifer mentioned the chapter in Architecture of the Afterlife where Tony Stockwell recalled a lifetime in Victorian London, where he and his brother both died of starvation in one of those "workhouses." Awful places for humans to be place - without any help from the government. So A Christmas Carol was a tale about how to be kind to others and to give around the holiday time. He also gives a review of the film "Splendid" which is both hilarious and mind bending. When asked about it, he said "I hate musicals." Hilarious reply - and then he said he was kidding, he loved the film and loved what Will Ferrell did with the part. I mean - c'mon - Will's never going to believe that Charles Dickens showed up on our podcast tonight to compliment him on his performance in SPIRITED, but that is EXACTLY WHAT HE DID. We've been doing this for 8 years. Jennifer works with law enforcement nationwide, and just last week was part of an operation that was able to track down and eliminate 450 pounds of fentanyl. She's the real deal. Apologies for my cough - not much I can do, other than to say, I hope it clears up soon! And happy holidays to you all. Enjoy our Christmas special with the one and only Charles Dickens!
Ebeneezer has some unexpected visits and gets a look at his past!
In the first episode of our dramatization of A Christmas Carol, it's Christmas Eve in London 1843. We meet Bob Cratchit, Ebenezer Scrooge and his nephew Fred. Ebeneezer is on the edge of starting the journey of his life!
A Christmas Open House at my new friend Opal's place got me to thinking…it got me to thinking about my feelings and attitude toward Christmas, described by some as Grinch-y or Scrooge-y. There's a reason for my jaundiced eye cast on this winter holiday, but not because I dislike the good tidings it creates. It's the real lesson of Chuck Dickens' “A Christmas Carol,” one we ought to look at again! withinpodcast.com Past Yuletide Episodes: Remember to share the show with someone you know today! https://withintherealm.libsyn.com/the-most-famous-reindeer-of-all https://withintherealm.libsyn.com/a-tree-too-far https://withintherealm.libsyn.com/santa-and-me-not-for-believing-ears Check out all we have to offer at withinpodcast.com! Pastor Dale Benson Psalm 102 The “What If” questions of today will have repercussion for the realities of tomorrow. Throughout scripture we have times and places where the people of God are called to do something big. Then they are called to commemorate these things and remember them. Psalm 102:18 (NLT) - Let this be recorded for future generations. The nation of Israel had ways of passing down information to their children and their children's children. Even before they began writing on paper, they would leave tributes or monoliths, or stacks of stones to remind them of stories. - We do the same things here. Over the last 15 years I know that we have talked about Ebeneezer and setting up stones that serve as reminders to our children so that as they grow, they can remember the lessons they learned. We do this so that when people walk by and ask, “why is this here” we can tell them a story about what God did. For many of us, these stories have meaning in our lives because we are remembering stories we taught our kids. We remember the sacrifices that were made, and the miracles God did. We tell our children. As we think about our families and children, and the world they will be living in, there are some things I think I need to address as the pastor of this people: - I do not believe that I have ever urged people to vote for or against anything. As a church, we very strongly believe in sanctity of human life. While we do describe situations and circumstances where exceptions may be necessary, the amendment that is before our state is, so I am urging and pleading with you to vote no on issue 1. This is not a political issue. This is a moral and spiritual issue. - I could not, in good conscience, speak to you today about “recording something for future generations… for a people not yet born,” and not address this issue and again ask you to “Vote No on Issue 1.” - These are tough decisions for so many people. Part of our job as the church is to educate our families, our children, our students on a Christian view of healthy sexuality and how to raise our children. Our NextGen ministries, Grove City Christian School, and Grove City Christian Childcare are all pieces of the puzzle that help families begin to have a biblical worldview and an understanding of the fullness of God and His love for us. The changes come at a cost. There will be other stories on this property where others will hear about the goodness of God. Things will be recorded there for future generations to tell of the good works of God! We are building a testimony to the goodness of God. When people ask, “Why would a church build all this stuff and have disc golf and gymnasiums and football fields and on and on,” the answer is going to be way different than what they think. You see these things are being built so that others can learn about the goodness of God. They can declare His works for generations to come.
In this brief exchange from a musical that should never be produced, imagine a pair of old dudes, kind of like the critics on the Muppets but not so much, asking about the status of another one of their brethren? It opens with ole Billy caning up to his good friend, Ebeneezer, who gives him the lowdown on the third member of their crewe, the eponymous OWD.
How Big Are Your Barns? In Luke chapter 12, Jesus shared the Parable of the Rich Fool. Jesus' message in that parable is every bit as important for us today as the day it was first told. We'll talk about it today on Faith and Finance. Let's start with the first part of the parable, Luke 12:16-19. That's where Jesus says, “The land of a rich man produced plentifully, and he thought to himself, ‘What shall I do, for I have nowhere to store my crops?'And he said, ‘I will do this: I will tear down my barns and build larger ones, and there I will store all my grain and my goods. And I will say to my soul, “Soul, you have ample goods laid up for many years; relax, eat, drink, be merry.”Now, a lot of people might read that and think, “Hey, that sounds like a solid, practical solution. You've got too much stuff coming in. If your barns aren't big enough, you need bigger barns! What's wrong with that?”Well, the rich man finds out what's wrong in the next two verses. They read, “But God said to him, ‘Fool! This night your soul is required of you, and the things you have prepared, whose will they be?' So is the one who lays up treasure for himself and is not rich toward God.”If that theme sounds familiar to you, there's a good reason. Charles Dickens no doubt borrowed it when he wrote A Christmas Carol. Of course there, Ebeneezer Scrooge takes on the role of the rich fool, obsessed with money and possessions. But unlike the Rich Fool, Ol' Ebeneezer gets a second chance. And so do we.Our second chance starts with understanding what “rich toward God” means. It's an unusual phrase and God's Word doesn't elaborate on it, but we can get an idea of its meaning by contrast. It's the opposite of building bigger barns or laying up earthly treasure for yourself.Being rich toward God is acknowledging that we're made for Him, not for our own pleasure or possessions. Our abundance is in Him, not our bank accounts.“Rich toward God” means counting Him as greater riches than anything on the earth. And it means using earthly riches to show how much we value God. How do we do that? By giving generously to His Kingdom. Had the Rich Fool done that, he might have heard these words from Matthew 25:“Come, you who are blessed by my Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world. For I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me drink, I was a stranger and you welcomed me … I was naked and you clothed me, I was sick and you visited me, I was in prison and you came to me … as you did it to one of the least of these my brothers … you did it to me.”But the Rich Fool did none of that. He thought only of himself and when he died, he left his earthly treasure behind. Now, Jesus is not saying that our works save us, but He is saying that not doing the good works we were designed for will hurt our relationship with God. Jesus is teaching that money and possessions are dangerous because they can lure us out of love for God and keep us from treasuring Him.Because of that, some might think that money is bad, but it's not. It's really a powerful tool that can be used for good or bad. While the proper use of money can store up treasure in heaven for you, the improper use of money can be hazardous to your spiritual health as it was in the case of the Rich Fool. The problem wasn't that he became rich, the rich are no less godly than the poor. The problem was that the Rich Fool ceased to view God as his supreme treasure. If God had been his treasure, he might have said:“God, this is all yours. You have made my fields prosper. Show me how to express with my riches that You are my treasure and that riches are not. I already have enough. I don't need more luxury and leisure.Had he said that, the Rich Man wouldn't have been a fool at all. He would have been a very wise man who was rich toward God. He would have discovered that— as Jesus is quoted in Acts 20:35— “It is more blessed to give than to receive.”The Rich Fool learned that the hard way, but we don't have to. We can learn from his mistake and strive to be rich toward God.On today's program, Rob also answers listener questions: If someone else is paying a home mortgage, but the house is in your name, what's the best way to remove yourself from the equation and put the home in their name? When is it appropriate to move away from conservative investments like bonds and invest a little more aggressively? Is it wise to open several new accounts in the name of a trust? What financing options should you consider when buying a business franchise? Richard Thomas stars as Ebeneezer Scrooge in the Pittsburgh Civic Light Opera production of "A Musical Christmas Carol," December 17th through 23rd at the Byham Theater. Richard talks about his return, the fine points of portraying Ebeneezer, whether Charles Dickens was writing about his own Father in creating the role, the singing and dancing in the production, and the message he is trying to get across. Richard also discusses his recent work in a new movie with Sandra Bullock, appearing as Atticus Finch in "To Kill a Mocking Bird," the success of FX's "The Americans" and his four seasons with the series until perishing in an accident the script writers evolved. He also talks about growing up in a dance house in this conversation with Jim Cunningham.
Art teacher Lauren Sakowski and sophomore Sarah Ebenezer both grew up making costumes with their moms. Now, Sakowski does this with her own children while Ebenezer started creating her own. Both use this holiday as a chance to connect with their friends and family. In this episode, Sakowski and Ebeneezer talk about what Halloween means to them and how they celebrate it.

Just when you thought the podcast was improving I go and break my microphone, so girls and boys we're back to poor quality sound.Add that to the poor content and it's a killer combination that everyone is talking about.Anyway, it's an episode so at least there's that.First up we have Robin Sings and the songstress has been busy in the playground at school creating a new version of Jingle Bells Batman Smells. Should a 5 year old really be sprouting this filth? The answer is NO! I blame the parents. Then we take a trip to Greece and look at the legend of the Kalikanzaroi, little goblin type creatures that create havoc during the twelve days of Christmas. Then we have a 3rd joke from Benji Pearson our American Scandinavian correspondent. Will this episode's joke match the high quality of the previous two?Not likely. Then thanks to our listener Julie we take a look at A Diva's Christmas Carol. This modern take on the classic exchanges Ebeneezer for Ebony Scrooge and it stars Vanessa William. If you want to have a watch, here's a link: https://vimeo.com/248098181If you want to get in touch, do it, do it now!The website is totalchristmaspodcast.comAnd the email address is totalchristmas@gmail.comMerry Christmas

I've always enjoyed keeping my room dark. On occasion a beam of sunlight would penetrate my blinds if they had been moved for one reason or another. It's not that I have anything against daylight but the burst of sunshine brought the spots on the carpet and dust in the air to life. Julianna would have never stood for that. She always made sure I cleaned and picked up after myself.I heard a very loud knock on my door. It didn't surprise me. It was my very determined neighbor who uses the Holidays as an excuse to drive me crazy. “Old guy... hey OLD GUY! It's me again. I'm having friends over tomorrow to celebrate the new year. You're invited but I know you wont show up. Hell, I'd be surprised if you even answered the door. I know I've said this the past three years but THIS is the absolute last time I will bother you on New Years Eve. I just figured you might, ahhh ya know what, never mind!” she said. She was acting like a child who was being forced by her mother to be nice to the uncle no one cared for. “Later Scrooge,” She mumbled from the other side of the door. “I heard that,” I replied. It's not the first time I overheard people walking up and down the hallways at night comparing me to pre-ghost Ebeneezer.I invited my neighbor in and offered her a seat. She reluctantly sat down and was obviously in some form of shock. “Look man, if you plan on murdering me or something my boyfriend knows I'm here,” She told me. I had seen her boyfriend on occasion in passing. He was always on his phone and never really paid her any attention. If I did happen to murder her I honestly don't believe he'd even notice, at least for a few days. “Your days are mixed up,” I said as I was trying to keep a cough under control while my eyes watered a bit. “You don't sound too good,” My neighbor mentioned. She seemed confused by my statement. I went on to explain how tomorrow is not New Years Day at all, it's actually December 32nd, the last day of Christmas. Her eyes opened very wide as she began to rise from the old west cowhide club chair to make a speedy exit. Before walking out the door she stopped to look back at me. My hand was covering my face as I was clutching my side coughing uncontrollably with my mouth shut. “You! Sit down and I'll get you a glass of water while you explain to me how tomorrow isn't January first,” She said in a demanding voice while storming toward my tiny kitchen. I thanked her for the glass of water and began to tell my story. The year was 1971. I had just returned from Vietnam in the middle of December. I was in my twenties, stronger, healthy, and arguably better looking. I was happy to be home for many reasons but none compared to Julianna. I was going to ask her to marry me. We met a week before I had shipped out. I bet we wrote each other a thousand letters while I was gone and she was finishing college. We got to know each other through the mail. Each note uncovered something new. Each sentence and every letter was the beginning of our love story. We were married in December. Neither of our families had much money so it was a small ceremony in a little church just outside of Clarksville. Her dad was the preacher so we got a pretty great deal. I forgot to mention both of our birthdays were in December and I proposed to her the day before Christmas the previous year. Seeing as how this was a very special month we decided one day of Christmas just wasn't enough. Our first December as a married couple was the beginning of a very special tradition. Each year the tree was up before midnight on November 30th. December first we celebrated Christmas, December second we celebrated Christmas, December third we celebrated Christmas, and this went on all the way through the 31st. We exchanged gifts each day, nothing too extravagant. It was mostly handmade cards and sometimes a new pair of shoes or something. One year I did manage to save up and get her a new ring for our ten year anniversary on Christmas the 13th. She went all out and made me my favorite, Rum Cake for Christmas the 14th. Our life together was special. Our life together was perfect.Around the time the 70's were coming to an end we found out children weren't going to be possible. It was pretty devastating news for the both of us but we managed. The 80's were a struggle because I messed my back up pretty badly at work and had to change career directions. We had talked about adoption before our income shrunk. The 90's happened and we finally decided children just weren't meant to be. It probably took us a solid twenty years to let that dream go but we were at peace with it. Through all of the struggles, the tragedies, the blindsides life tends to throw we always managed to keep our Christmas tradition strong. We celebrated Christmas for 31 days straight each year for over 30 years. In 2005 we found out Julianna was sick, really sick. We spent most of that year in and out of hospitals, mostly in. November the doctor told me my wife would not make it through December. This simply meant we had to make adjustments. We lost the house over the course of her illness but it didn't matter. I managed to get a Christmas tree up in her room by midnight, November 30th. It was quite small but a beautiful tree. Her smile lit up the room when she woke and saw it. On Christmas 1st we exchanged gifts, on Christmas 2nd we exchanged gifts, and on Christmas 3rd we exchanged gifts. Early in December she managed to glue, cut, and paint some of the most beautiful presents I have ever seen. The cards I gave her weren't near as detailed or colorful but were made with just as much love. By the middle of the month her Christmas gifts were hugs at first then soft kisses before she nodded off each day. Eventually her gifts became a tired little smile she was able to force before all of the medication sent her to sleep.A staff member came into the room to reassure me, my Julianna was not in any pain. I ignored him because we were in the middle of celebrating Christmas 31st. The ring I had given her for our anniversary so many years ago had fallen off of her finger because she had lost so much weight. I wrapped some yarn around the ring and slid it back on her hand. This was my simple gift to her this Christmas. She held my hand in return. Knowing she would not make it through the night I gave her a final kiss and said goodbye before falling asleep with her hand in mine.I guess I must have turned over in my chair during the night. I woke up early the next morning refusing to open my eyes because I was content in the dark imagining my wife next to me forcing a tired smile in my direction. I had finally worked up enough nerve to peek at her next to me in the bed. She was still breathing. My stubborn wife had managed to live longer than anyone had expected. Right then and there I decided this must be December 32nd. My wife decided to give me the most amazing, awesome gift anyone could ever receive. She gave me the gift of an extra day. I laid beside her and talked about our life together. The memories flooded in and and each moment, each Christmas was alive again. I wanted her to know I did not take her final gift for granted. I wanted her to know I never took a single Christmas or a single day with her for granted, ever. I looked at her and saw the beautiful woman I had met almost 40 years ago. I could see her hazel eyes full of joy, her perfect little crooked smile that was sometimes a mask whenever I did something stupid. I could smell her favorite perfume while I ran my finger over the bridge of her nose. We talked into the night. She passed late that evening. That's why December 32nd is the most important day of the year. My young neighbors eyes were full of tears. She hugged my neck and left the room. I sat in my old chair that night holding my wife's ring. I needed to feel close to her. Once again memories flooded in and I was able to sleep on this special Christmas eve.First thing in the morning on December 32nd a very loud knock shook my apartment. My neighbor began speaking through the door, “I broke up with my boyfriend last night. I told him your story. All he had to say is that is was silly to waste all of that time and effort every year. I kicked him out because I want what you had! I want that kind of love. I have a gift for you. It's Christmas the 32nd and I want to clean your apartment for you. Hey old guy... OLD GUY!” She continued to talk but I never responded. I had passed sometime in my sleep that night. I spent over one thousand Christmases with Julianna and that still wasn't enough. I was ready to hold her hand again.

We enjoy the fortune of talking to one of our very own this week with Nico LeBarge! In addition to her role in the BBB Portland taproom (or drive-thru at time of recording), Nico - an accomplished artist in her own time with a BFA and multiple residencies to her name - is responsible for a sizable (and rapidly growing) chunk of BBB3R bottle artwork. We get into Nico's earliest memories of being grabbed by art, the long road toward finding your own voice as a creator, how being a D-1 swimmer during undergrad at UMass continues to drive her as artist, and what her artistic process looks like in at the seed of any project. Nico also tells us about when she realized that beer will always beat the hell out of fancy cocktails, what her experience working at the perpetually-mysterious Ebeneezer's Pub was like, and why she believes the impact of reps trumps all else in both art and life. It was an amazing change of pace to hear about a world almost entirely unknown to the guys, particularly with such a hugely talented lightning bolt of a lady. Prett-ty, prett-tyy, pr-et-tttttty good, in fact. ........... ........................... ..................................... ..............................Music: "Mountain Climb" by Jake Hill

Charles Dickens authored a redemption story featuring Ebeneezer Scrooge, a pitiful man who was rich and yet had nothing. Generations who read the story or watched the movie applaud the reformed Ebeneezer who turned from his evil ways and learned to love through generosity. But ironically, we're pretty tight-fisted in our own lives. Too bad. This is not the way a child of God behaves.

12/19/19: A CHAOSMAS CAROL - THE TALE OF EBENEEZER SCREWED Last night, a historic House vote made Trump only the third president in US history to be impeached. Most Americans are angry that the Democrat road rage has wasted our money on this fiasco. This move adds more fuel to the Winter of Our Discontent and certainly signals the further move towards a civil schism that may lead to war. On tonight's show, Clyde Lewis talks about A CHAOSMAS CAROL - THE TALE OF EBENEEZER SCREWED.
She always made sure I cleaned and picked up after myself. I heard a very loud knock on my door. It's not the first time I overheard people walking up and down the hallways at night comparing me to pre-ghost Ebeneezer. I invited my neighbor in and offered her a seat. Our life together was perfect. Around the time the 70's were coming to an end we found out children weren't going to be possible. This weekend we will focus on the theme of gratitude, as we are gearing up for the Thanksgiving Holiday. I will be preaching on I Samuel 7, which has the story of raising the Ebeneezer, which we sing about in the popular hymn "Come Thou Fount of Every Blessing." I'll share the story behind that word, and focus on what it means for the expression of gratitude. We will not only talk about raising an Ebeneezer ... we're going to actually do it! You'll have to come on Sunday to see what that means, and what it will be like. Click here to go to our Facebook page ... scroll down on the page and watch a short video of me talking about this sermon Also, note that immediately after the service, we'll be voting on whether to extend a call to Don Damborg to serve as Worship Coordinator, for Ignite and Sunday worship at Bethel. I hope you can join us.
Do you believe you are who God says you are? Believing God sometimes leads to big leaps of faith and my friend Katie Dommel shares some of her personal journey through doubts, detours and worship. She also talks about Ebeneezer moments which is a pretty cool concept and I might start collecting rocks after recording this episode.
So far has the Lord helped me. An update on my health situation which is looking really quite good as I am now in remission. This was shared six months after the end of chemotherapy for blood cancer. Show Notes Episode 201: Horrible Bosses This week Host Dave Bledsoe completes the staff's annual performance reviews only to find they all quit some time ago. (Except for you, Gavin.) On the show this week, we talk about Senator Amy Klobuchar candidacy for Worst Boss of the Year and whether or not it impacts her chances on that other thing she's running for. (Hint: Yes.) Along the way we learn about some of Dave's worst bosses, his best boss and about his own management style. (Gavin keeps laugh/barking at the term “management”) We learn what it means to be “Minnesota Nice” (turns out, not very nice at all) and about alternative eating utensils. We examine the gender dynamics of working for an asshole boss and solve once and for all which is worse: asshole male boss of asshole female boss. (The answer may shock you!) Finally, we discuss not the BEST way to handle your asshole boss, a definitely A way. Our Sponsor this week is Ebeneezer's Employment Emporium, the answer to asshole's staffing needs for 200 years. We open the show with Will Ferrel's management style and close with Ricky Comb's resignation. Greene County, Missouri was once home to many bustling communities that slowly withered away. One town had quite an intriguing story. There it was said the springs could cure; that a bit of heaven had fallen to earth. A respected doctor even banked his future on the town’s medicinal wonders. Have you ever heard of the lost town of Bethesda? DOWNLOAD NOW Credit: A huge thanks to author and local Greene County historian Shirley Gilmore who wrote a little book called Bethesda: Lost City in 1970, when she was a senior in high school and as part of a Girl Scout project. The book is in the reference section of the Springfield-Greene County Library in Springfield, Missouri. This week Walnut Grove gets a shiny new bank with a less-than-friendly banker (whom we all immediately like.) Pa makes some more poor financial decisions, Ma attempts to raise more money for the school’s textbook fund without using her womanly wiles, and Laura makes fishing buddies with a middle-aged man without knowing his name which makes us question Ma and Pa’s parenting methods. We also discuss Gilmore Girls (again), Mr. Worldwide (Pitbull), how embarrassing our pets can be, and what qualities make a good banker. That's right, it's a Christmas episode! I spit on your insistence that "schedules make sense" and "it's already 2018." Ptui. Important questions: Why does A Christmas Carol have such staying power? We received a few requests for a song from "A Christmas Carol" (1951) and made the rare ruling that it is not Holiday Enough (or a complete enough performance) for us to rank. But in the spirit (get it) of those requests, we listen to two Dickens-related songs, "A Christmas Carol" by Tom Lehrer and "Ebeneezer" by The Wizards of Winter! Thanks to Douglas for requesting "A Christmas Carol" and to captain-mcgloo and anonymous for requesting "Barbara Allen"!

Ebeneezer wasn't always a scrooge. Sure, that was his last name, but it wasn't always his personality. He wasn't born greedy, selfish, and miserable. Yet, the circumstances he was born into and the choices he made in is life, the ghosts of his past, haunted him. The truth is that all of us have this in common with Scrooge; we all wrestle with the ghosts of our past. Regrets - we've all had a few, none of which we want to mention. The story of Christmas is not only about the birth of the One who would change our future, it is the truth of the One who can heal our past. Regrets turned to Redemption - this Sunday at Mendham Hills.

Scripture: 1 Samuel 7, Christmas is about transformation. Why is this something either so challenging or so neglected in so many people's lives?
Rather than shunning the concept of a Christmas special this year, the Brake for Frogger team have embraced the idea and thrown themselves headlong into their first ever attempt. Combining a new twist on a classic Christmas tale with their own gaming awards for 2011, here is the final podcast of season 2... Hope you enjoy!
