In the opening volley of their opening series on The Great Speeches of History, Sam and Nick discuss the most iconic speech ever delivered by an American president: Lincoln's Gettysburg Address. The Last Best Hope?: Understanding America from the Outside In
The Battle Hymn of the Republic is one of the most recognisable songs in the world. Easy to sing, and to march to, its words are stirring and optimistic, and filled with vivid images: trumpets that never call retreat, watch-fires of a hundred circling camps, trampling of the grapes of wrath, loosing of the fateful lightning of the terrible swift sword, burnished rows of steel, lilies in whose beauty Christ was born across the sea. It contains the frisson of redemptive violence, too: as he died to make men holy, let us die to make men free. It is, in fact, the most perfect musical expression of the idea that America is peculiarly blessed by God -- the last best hope of earth. Adam talks to John Stauffer and Richard Carwardine to find out more about the song's origins.
Today Maureen Taylor, The Photo Detective, is joined by the Sumner R. and Marshall S. Kates Professor of English and of African and African American Studies at Harvard University, John Stauffer. John and Maureen dive into his book Picturing Frederick Douglass which has become a national bestseller. The two talk about images of Frederick Douglass, and how photos of individuals from history can give us a fuller picture of their lives. John delves into telling the audience more about Frederick Douglass' life and work but also explains how he believes that Douglass' rebellion in how he was photographed, in how often he was photographed, and his passion for pushing standards, makes him a critical figure not only in our nation's history but also the history of photography. This episode P-Mutt chats with former colleague and close friend, John Stauffer, Co-Founder & COO at Isometric Technologies (ISO). Bain is off this time, but will be back with us next episode. We're recording this on Friday, Nov 19th... just around the corner from Thanksgiving week! Give us a listen on the way to your family festivities. Housekeeping: Did you see us at FreightWaves F3 Virtual Experience? Catch anything you missed here. And congratulations again to the whole CarrierDirect team for making the FreightTech 25! And now for our special guest... John Stauffer! John and Adam have previously worked together for 10+ years. They worked together at Echo and Uber Freight, they've partied together in Vegas, been on the same bowling team, built Echo's carrier network in the Southeast and Canada. So many things! John has a ton of experience operationally as well as product management, and is currently the Co-Founder and COO at ISO. Today P-Mutt and John Stauffer chat about improving the workflow process involved in scorecarding and auditing to create a better customer experience. Seeing the scorecard process from a different altitude As John advanced in his freight career, he got to see the same issue from a different viewpoint. The main KPI was efficiency: Loads per head per day. John discovered that people were spending an outsized amount of time on this data reconciliation process - scrubbing scorecards. Service is a differentiator in transportation & logistics Better service brings a larger award and/or access to more spot opportunities or mini bids. Account managers saw value in auditing because that's where they found opportunities to improve service. They were also spending a lot of time scrubbing data to accomplish this. A light bulb went on when they saw the monetary penalties connected to shipper performance and how scorecarding and auditing could help reduce costs. The new challenge became figuring out how to improve this process. ISO addresses workflow problems ISO pulls data sources from different systems, aggregates those, factors in SLAs, and applies those when processing transportation and order info. Thus, when creating those scorecards they are able to understand what the impact of a late delivery was and tie that back to the shipment. Ultimately, then the root cause of that failure point can be identified. Penalties can then be attributed to the responsible party. Collaborative Performance Management Collaborative Performance Management is the concept that streamlines all the workflows. It should be on your radar because there is value to aligning with your carriers on performance. Collaborative Performance Management removes friction from relationships. It helps shippers strengthen partnerships with existing carriers and helps shippers understand how to become a shipper of choice. Interested in working at ISO? From the Editor: Kevin and Stephanie are under the weather this week, and are taking the week off to mend. So, please, enjoy this episode from March 2020, and please keep the Mason's in your prayers. From a small town dairy farm to a Mayo Clinic surgeon. Kevin's old college roommate shares his amazing stories...
Abraham Lincoln delivered two speeches that are considered among the greatest ever delivered. One was the Gettysburg Address and one was the Second Inaugural. Most Americans consider the Gettysburg Address to be his greatest, but Lincoln believed his Second Inaugural was his best. I agree. It changed the way Americans thought about their country. This is a talk I delivered to a class in the fall of 2020. They had in front of them the speech itself. You should print out the speech before you listen to this so you can follow along. Lincoln had read and admired Feuerbach on how we humans generate our religious thinking. If you have not listened to the talk on Feuerbach, and are interested, you might do that. The last minute of the talk gets cut off. Sorry about that. I was talking about Barack Obama's minister, Reverend Jeremiah Wright. Reverend Wright was an amazing minister. His congregation, which is situated in south Chicago, a very poor neighborhood, had wonderful programs. He had educational tutoring, scholarships, jobs programs, food programs, health programs. You name it, they did it. I admire him in many ways. But he had a style of preaching that was common in the Black community but not well understood outside of that tradition. I grew up with that style. The preacher will renounce the congregation for their sins. In my case I remember the minister saying, “You are damned and doomed to a devil's hell.” But the renunciation was really a reassurance that you can overcome your sin and be a better person. In one sermon Reverend Wright spoke of the tendency of people to say “God Bless America.” The Reverend thought they were claiming a status in the eyes of God that they did not deserve. He said, “NO! Not God Bless America. God Damn America!” It may be hard to believe but that was actually an expression of patriotism, an affirmation that America could be what God meant it to be. God is in the whirlwind and we can emerge a better nation, a nation truly under God. But this emerged during a presidential campaign and one of the candidates was a Black man who had attended that church. This phrase was distorted and misrepresented until candidate Obama had to renounce it. Lincoln would have agreed with Reverend Wright. Lincoln DID agree with Reverend Wright, as you can tell. God is giving us a terrible punishment that we could never have imagined. “I tremble for my country when I consider that God is just,” as Jefferson said. Lincoln was even more graphic: a Black drop of blood will be repaid by a dead white person. We have to wonder how an American president would fare today if he delivered such a speech. It was American Exceptionalism, Lincoln style. Two last points. Reporters were keeping close track of cheering. Most of the enthusiasm during the talk came from the Black members of the audience. Many white people were silent. The white members of the audience were Lincoln's base, his strongest supporters. And every single one of them had lost someone they knew and loved in that war. Finally, the comment by Frederick Douglass demands an acknowledgement. Lincoln and Douglass had become personal friends. This unlikely friendship is analyzed in the wonderful book Giants by John Stauffer. Douglass came by the White House that evening. The place was packed but Lincoln singled out Douglass and asked what he thought. Douglass demurred but Lincoln insisted. “Mr. Lincoln. That was a sacred effort.” And so it was. For those overseas, be aware that I am taking you deep into an American way of thinking.

We talk to historian John Stauffer about his book "The Battle Hymn of the Republic: A Biography of the Song That Marches On."
In Episode 1 of Series 4 of The Rights Track, Todd is in the United States, where he interviews leading slavery experts Professor David Blight from Yale University and Professor John Stauffer from Harvard University about lessons from history that are applicable in today's fight to end modern slavery. He starts by talking to David Blight about his recently published biography of Frederick Douglass, the escaped slave who became the greatest orator of his day and one of the leading abolitionists and writers of the era. 0.00-5.00 David talks about his quest to find out over nearly a decade to understand why Douglas was so steeped in the Old Testament He mentions Old Testament scholars recommended to him including Robert Alter Walter Bruggemann and Abraham Heschel. He explains how reading those scholars led him to describe Douglass as a Prophet of Freedom 5.00-13.13 David says what Douglass had to say about a host of issues related to issues of inequality still resonates today He goes on to explain that being a successful campaigner who achieved great things by the time he was in his forties he went on to see many of those victories eroded as his life drew to an end - he references the Jim Crow laws Douglass' power lay in his facility with carefully crafted words and prophetic language. He references the Fugitive Slave Crisis, the Dred Scott decision and the black exodus to Kansas David talks about his favourite words from Douglass' second autobiography My Bondage and my Freedom describing how he will continue use his voice, his pen and his vote in the fight against slavery and how he thinks that's all any of us has today to fight slavery. Todd asks John Stauffer what lessons from history are being harnessed in what's been describes as the 4th wave of an anti-slavery movement 13.25-end John talks about the power of the voice in history and today (orally and written) - he references the first abolitionist newspaper, William Lloyd Garrison's The Liberator and the response that drew from John C.Calhoun, a political advocate of slavery and someone credited with 'starting' the American Civil War Todd asks if it's the voices of slaves themselves that are more important or the voices of people who represent slaves - John says it's both John explains that even though there was no internet or social media to help spread anti-slavery messages, the power of public speaking then was as influential as the voices of celebrities today. John says the abolitionists, despite only being 5% of the population, may not have turned people into abolitionists, but they were effective in making people anti-slavery John says that silencing slaves is the weapon of modern day slave owners just as it was more than 100 years ago so that speaking out and bearing witness is the key to mobilising action to end slavery.
