Welcome to the sixty-fifth episode of the Lessons from the Cockpit podcast! I received word this week my book Tanker Pilot: Lessons from the Cockpit is now on the four-star commander of Air Mobility Command General Mike Minihan's "Leadership Library" reading list under the heading We Are the Maneuver. I'm grateful and humbled General Minihan thinks enough of my book to be included on his first published list. In February of last year, I gave my listeners a reading list of great books in the episode called "Book of the Month Club". This episode updates my reading list based on some of the current events going on around the world with the war between Russia and Ukraine, the use of drones in the same conflict and our Reaper drones being assaulted over Syria, and some of the current operations ongoing in the Pacific and Europe. I expect in the coming months I will add more to the list to expand your understanding of air operations and lessons learned to improve critical thinking skills both in the air and on the ground. My new list includes the following books that are linked to Amazon if you want to add the to your library: Hunter Killer by Mark McCurley Blue Moon over Cube by William Ecker Jawbreaker by Gary Berntsen Shooter by Jack Coughlin Razor 03 by Al Mack Scream of Eagles by Robert Wilcox The Air Campaign by John Warden 12 Strong by Doug Stanton To Win the Winter Sky by Danny Parker The First and the Last by Adolf Galland Support for the Lessons from the Cockpit podcast comes from the book Tanker Pilot: Lessons from the Cockpit found on Amazon in all four formats; Hardback, Softback with black and white pictures, Kindle and Audible. The electronic versions of the book download with an extra file of the thirty-two pictures included in the book. Custom aviation art for the walls of your home, office, or hanger can be purchased from Wall Pilot. These are highly detailed profile views of aircraft from World War II to fifth gen fighters printed on vinyl you can peel off and stick to any flat surface. There are 132 Ready-to-Print graphics and Wall Pilot can do custom aircraft profiles with names, units, tail codes and weapons loads. Order one or two Wall Pilot graphics from the website. Thanks for downloading and listening to this episode of books I'm reading. This and previous episodes of the Lessons from the Cockpit podcast are available on my www.markhasara.com website.

Season 1 episode 10 of the Operational Arch is part two of our conversation with guest Dr. Jim Greer as he takes us on a deep dive into John Boyd and his Patterns of Conflict. We continue our conversation on how we should engage Boyd, and explores how John Warden's Five Rings theory collates with Boyd's theories. Boyd and Warden's theories remain complimentary in that they take a systems approach to understanding warfare, and may well be last pair of military theorists whose ideas substantively impacted how the U.S. Army conducts operations. Dr. Greer is currently a professor at the Advanced Military Studies Program. He served thirty years in the US Army, commanded at all levels from platoon through Brigade, is a prior director of SAMS, and is a veteran of six combat tours in Iraq, Afghanistan, Palestine and the Balkans. Dr. Greer retired as a COL and holds a Doctorate in Education from Walden University. John Warden III was an exceptionally influential air power strategist whose name is inextricably connected with Operation Desert Storm, the 1991 coalition campaign to free Kuwait after the Iraqi invasion. We discuss his influence with Colonel Dr John Andreas Olsen of the Royal Norwegian Air Force. Warden was a pupil of theorist Carl von Clausewitz, taking from him his concept of the ‘centre of gravity', which Warden multiplied concentrically to identify five targets for air bombardment that would bring an enemy power to its knees – his ‘five rings'. But he also rejected Clausewitz's emphasis on a decisive battle between land forces to achieve the same outcome. In an almost ‘Douhetian' fashion, Warden made the case that air power on its own could bring about a decision in war – but very much unlike the Italian general, Warden wanted to spare the enemy civilian population, targeting above all the enemy's centre of power. Our guest, Col Dr John Andreas Olsen, is currently assigned to NATO Headquarters in Brussels. He is a professor at the Norwegian Institute for Defence Studies, and a fellow of the Royal Swedish Academy of War Sciences. He completed a doctorate in history and international relations at De Montfort University, and he holds further degrees from the Universities of Warwick and Trondheim.

Original broadcast date June 7, 2018. The original podcast post is here: https://pixelatedgeek.com/2018/06/binary-system-podcast-130-wtnv-129-a-matter-of-blood-part-3/ The Blood Matter From Space is finally here, and the battle between Our Dana and Other Dana is taking place in a literal lake of blood. Not to worry though, all of Cecil's broadcasting equipment floats, so he'll keep broadcasting while sitting atop his radio desk. In a lake of blood. (Wonderful image though. Seriously, fan artists, can someone get on that?) After the recap we talk about how Elizabeth can't get judgey about Kathryn not seeing Infinity War yet, because Elizabeth hasn't seen anything else. (Seriously, our thoughts on Solo and Deadpool will also go up as soon as we actually see them.) Then it's thoughts on Transformers Earth Wars, DC's Dark Nights, Skyward, Saga, and how Wayward Sisters is out but a spinoff of The Originals is in. (A spinoff of a spinoff. CW, can you please stop the Vampire Diaries ride, we'd like to get off.) The outro music this week was a clip from You Can Dance? by Steve Combs. http://freemusicarchive.org/music/Steve_Combs/Speaking_in_Spirals_1809/06_You_Can_Dance We mentioned how we spotted John Warden in the trailer for "The Toys That Made Us," we've interviewed him twice, once in 2016 https://pixelatedgeek.com/2016/08/sdcc-2016-interview-with-hasbro-transformers-generations/ and once in 2017. https://pixelatedgeek.com/2017/08/sdcc-2017-interview-with-the-hasbro-transformers-design-team/ Correction: we wondered in the episode if they'd filmed any of Wayward Sisters, and they did have a "backdoor pilot" within the regular Supernatural Season. More info on CW's decision is here. http://www.tvguide.com/news/the-cw-supernatural-spinoff-wayward-sisters/

A Strategy for Success: The Desert Storm Air Campaign 30 Years Later Episode Summary: In Episode 5, A Strategy for Success: The Desert Storm Air Campaign 30 Years Later, host Lt Col (Ret.) John "Slick" Baum and Col (Ret.) Rich Reynolds are joined by Gen (Ret.) Mike Loh, Lt Gen (Ret.) Dave Deptula and Col (Ret.) John Warden—key actors that laid the foundation for the Desert Storm air campaign. Desert Storm marked a shift in the paradigm of warfare. For centuries, a strategy of attrition was the only path to victory. Harnessing the virtues of air and space power, U.S. and coalition air forces yielded peace rapidly and effectively in a way no adversary had ever imagined. This episode will discuss key events and highlight important lessons learned, as we hear firsthand from the airmen in the fight what really happened. Full Topic Guide: In Episode 5, host Lt Col (Ret.) John Baum and co-host Col (Ret.) Rich Reynolds dive into the history of the most successful air campaign in history. Drawing from his extensive experience, Reynolds sets the scene of a group of like-minded airmen going above and beyond the call of duty to plan and execute an air campaign that went against traditional military doctrine. Gen Mike Loh offers his firsthand experience as Vice Chief of the Air Force in getting the group together that would plan and execute operation Instant Thunder. He speaks to the political battles, and the personal connections that led to pulling together the team. Lt Gen Deptula describes the ground-centric military doctrine of air-land battle and how Desert Storm dramatically departed from this Vietnam-era strategy. Col Warden then explains how the name of the campaign, “Instant Thunder”, reflected this change in strategy, straying away from a slow grinding campaign, and focusing on the rapid strike capability of afforded by airpower. Gen Loh speaks to the need for the American military to lead with its strongest asset, aerospace power. The group then shares their individual top lessons learned form the air campaign, and how the U.S. should be thinking in achieving the same effect in future wars. The episode wraps with Baum emphasizing the importance of the people involved, over the larger war machine, and how this small, select group of military professionals shaped the outcome of the war. Time Marks: 02:10 – Rich joins the episode and lays down the backstory of the opening days of the war 05:03 – Gen Loh describes how he started pulling together the group that would ultimately plan and execute the campaign 08:51 – Slick asks Lt Gen Deptula to describe air-land battle and how Desert Storm countered this doctrine 11:33 – Rich asks Col Warden about his Instant Thunder plan and its origins 15:10 – Gen Loh goes into detail on how Washington was involved in the campaign 20:40 – Col Warden describes the impact of the shadow of Vietnam on strategic thinking 23:17– Lt Gen Deptula explains the birth of the effects-based approach to warfare 28:51 – Rich asks each of the guests for their top lessons learned from Desert Storm Links: The Mitchell Institute for Aerospace Studies website: https://www.mitchellaerospacepower.org The Mitchell Institute Facebook Page: https://www.facebook.com/Mitchell.Institute.Aerospace The Mitchell Institute LinkedIn Page: https://linkedin.com/company/mitchellaerospacepower The Mitchell Institute Twitter: @MitchellStudies The Mitchell Institute Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/themitchellinstituteforaero/ @themitchellinstituteforaero Credits: Host: Lt Col John “Slick” Baum, USAF, ret. San Diego Comic Con's 2019 event is in the books and the Seibertron.com Twincast / Podcast is here to break down all the latest new happenings with Transformers in the wake of the show. The first hour of this episode talks about the Haslab Unicron crowdfunding project that Transformers fans can back to try and help make this gigantic toy a reality. After that discussion moves on to other recently released or revealed Transformers Generations War for Cybertron Siege products. This starts out with the Rainmakers and moves on to Generations Selects items like the Leader Class Galaxy Man Shockwave and Deluxe Class Lancer. Other new products are then discussed like Battle Master sized Rung from the IDW comics stories, Micromaster Ratbat, Voyager Apeface and soon-to-come repaints of several already released toolings such as Soundblaster, Bluestreak and special "Classic Animation" colored Voyager Class figures Optimus Prime and Megatron. Attention then turns to Micromasters with obscure recolors of those characters filling out a multi-pack of ten figures in the upcoming Fall season. Vintage Generation One product reissues are also continuing with analysis and reaction to the other pair of Dinocassettes, Gurafi and Noizu who will be released in all new "vintage" style packaging with complete Tech Specs in tow. After a brief discussion of upcoming Transformers comics projects from IDW Publishing, the group discussion ends with a round of the recurring Bragging Rights segment. Following that, two interviews occur that were recorded live at SDCC 2019, the first with the John Warden and Ben Montano from the Transformers brand team. The second interview rounds out this episode of the podcast as Seibertron.com talks with Transformers TCG Brand Manager Drew Nolosco from Wizards of the Coast.
The great benefit of looking at John Warden's system is that it [employed] effects-based objectives [for] attacking an enemy A BETTER PEACE continues the Great Strategists series with a look at the systems-based theory of John Warden III, Colonel, U.S. Air Force retired. Out of the emerging theories of airpower and his own experiences in Vietnam, Warden developed the five-ring system model of an enemy force. Using effects-based operations, Warden used the five rings to suggest ways to use air operations to more efficiently influence an enemy force. Attacking targets closer to the center of the rings meant greater effects on the enemy. Presenting the history, concept, and implications of this theory are U.S. Army War College professors Clay Chun and Jacqueline E. Whitt. Clay Chun is Chair of the Department of the Distance Education at the U.S. Army War College. Jacqueline E. Whitt is Professor of Strategy at the U.S. Army War College and is the Editor of A BETTER PEACE. The views expressed in this presentation are those of the speakers and do not necessarily reflect those of the U.S. Army War College, U.S. Army, or Department of Defense.
