In the seventies and early eighties he trained extensively throughout Indonesia, Thailand, India and Japan. He was a multi-style Black Belt back when such things just did not happen. In the 80's he founded Blitz, Australia's Leading Martial Arts Magazine, which has since grown to dominate the marketplace here in Australasia. In the late 80's he switched focus to the USA, where he began training with the likes of World Kickboxing Champion, Benny ‘the Jet' Urquidez, Gene LeBell, the Gracies and Machado brothers. After several training trips to Brazil and numerous more to LA, John introduced the art of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu to Australian shores and in 1997 was awarded his BJJ Black Belt by the Machado's. We begin our series "See All the People" at a time when the church is anticipating a significant time of Special General Conference. Our series is not focused on this vote concerning human sexuality, but we cannot pretend as if it is not also on our minds and hearts in the days to come. Luke 5:1-11 In our passage, Jesus calls the first disciples. This calling is not about a personal relationship with Jesus. Rather, Jesus invites them to come and be all about "catching people alive." They are invited to follow him and commit their lives to something well beyond themselves. In a world where we search for significance and meaning, we often find ourselves starved. Jesus offers us the opportunity to follow Him as a part of the church--to let go of everything in order to follow in His way of life, healing/salvation, and truth. Are we like the crowd pressing in on Him? Are we like Simon Peter, James, or John? Will we continue to press in hoping for what WE seek? Will we leave everything we know and embrace what He seeks for us?

Cue a soft score by John Williams. And now, idyllic shots of the American South. And next comes, almost there, here it comes, Mel Gibson butchering men! All men are created equal, according to the Declaration of Independence (Day). But some men have a Cherokee tomahawk.  Our man with the 'hawk is Benjamin Martin, widowed father of seven, rocking chair enthusiast. All he wants is to live the simple life of a non-slave owning plantation cropper. Sweet as Carolina tea! But whispers are afoot. The cantankerous whispers of revolution.  Because of fucking dickheads like Colonel Tavington, Benjamin Martin is forced into war, where he becomes almost as full of rage as Mel Gibson. Out to avenge his son and usher in a new era of democracy, Martin goes on the warpath. Aided by his French buddy Jean, his son Heath Ledger, and Harvard graduate Donal Logue, Gibson turns a rag tag group of brothel patrons and church goers into such a ghostly platoon that Tom Wilkinson nearly shits his fancy British man dress. The rustics in this movie might be inept, but guess what isn't? The filmmaking. Our personal friend, Roland Emmerich, once again proves he understands the American psyche as only one steeped in German philosophy could! With a brilliant score by John Will and a fun screenplay from a man who is not Randal Wallace, we get The Patriot. Listener, open Sein ears, lend them to me. You will actually laugh at parts of this movie, and you might cry too (just as Gibson does so well (not a joke, the man can act-cry)).  So plug those earphones in and ready your bayonets, for many laughs are on the way!

This week we have a HUGE episode. We take six well known and respected black belts and ask them all the same five questions about blue belts. There are some similarities and differences within these interviews but the amount of jiu-jitsu wisdom about blue belts in this episode is amazing. The five questions we asked to the six black belt guests Do you have requirements for a blue belt? What are they? How important is it for students to be able to "defend" their belt? How many intangibles (good teammate, good effort, helps others) come into play when promoting someone to blue belt? Do you ever regret giving someone a blue belt? What advice to you have for the new blue belt?   Tim Sledd 24m 25s Tim explains some of the techniques he requires for a student to know before receiving a blue belt. Tim talks about why some students get tapped by lower belts and if it is a big deal. Why he looks at character of a student not just technique, and how this can hold someone back. Why he has no regrets of any belts he has given out. Advice for the new blue belt. Matt Thornton 58m 30s How he evaluates blue belts based on performance, and not looking at particular techniques. Why it is important for your first blue belts to be very good at a school. The importance of having good people on the mat. Why he is confident in all his blue belt students. Why it is important to relax and work on open guard as a blue belt. Bernardo Faria 1h 17m 30s Bernardo talks about Fabio Gurgel's system to get a blue belt a student must attend 120 classes. The idea of not tapping to a lower belt is an old mentality. Having a bad attitude will hold students back. Not having an actual belt test, and not regretting giving someone a blue belt. Keep your ego low, and work on learning jiu-jitsu. Daniel Covel 1h 25m 05s His minimum requirements of techniques for a blue belt. The responsibilities of the instructor to the students. The importance of learning from your mistakes, and making adjustments. Why it is important to have good people and teammates on the mat. He has no regrets about any of his past blue belts. It is important to recognise the hard work on the mats. Henry Akins 1h 42m 50s Understanding the basic positions and a handful of basic submissions. Why some upper belts get caught by lower belts. Why it is important for a blue belt to be a good training partner. Why getting tapped out is part of the learning process Why blue belts should work hard to develop a strong base. John Will 1h 59m 30s Why he likes having requirements for blue belts but not so many for other belts. It is rare for a colored belt to get tapped by a lower belt, but it is no big deal. Why the culture of the gym is so important. The concept of a ox neck and rat's head. It is often normal to feel like you don't deserve a new belt Ask five simple questions for every technique you learn to learn more details.
