Have you ever wondered why we are drawn to characters like Tony Soprano, even though he carries out morally bad actions? One possible explanation is our moral curiosity. This week on the podcast Dr. Jordan Wylie helps us understand what moral curiosity is and why we are allured by morally ambiguous characters. Dr. Wylie also speaks to us about her research on ‘phantom rules', rules such as jay-walking that are rarely enforced, as well as how our moral values influence what we believe about harm-reduction policies. Ava and Beth discuss what they believe a ‘moral saint' to be and we find out one of our hosts is a Marvel fan!
In this episode of the Further. Faster. Podcast we chat to Jordan Wylie. This is Jordan's second appearance. Last time we spoke to Jordan, it was the height of lockdown and he'd just abandoned a paddle boarding challenge around Great Britain after making it halfway. You may also recognize him as one of the hunters on the TV show "Hunted." In the background he's also building a school in Dijouti, running very cold marathons and campaigning on mental health issues - in particular social media addiction and abuse. So as we look ahead to World Mental Health Day on October 10th, we spoke to him about his own journey, how we can help our children, and how we can help ourselves. It's an essential, yet as always with Jordan, entertaining episode.

Today we talk with extreme adventurer Jordan Wylie about what it's like to take on adventures around the world all in the support of serving a greater good. His experience as a combat soldier drives his passion to give back, and help children from war torn areas. From running underground marathons to paddle boarding the ocean, he embraces adventure as a model for us all. Show notes: Jordan Wylie is a former soldier, bestselling author, extreme adventurer and also one of the stars of Channel 4's BAFTA-nominated and award-winning shows Hunted and Celebrity Hunted. In October 2019, Jordan became the first person in history to row, solo and unsupported across the most dangerous strait of water on the planet (Bab el Mandeb Straits) between the Horn of Africa and Yemen. Jordan has also successfully completed numerous major charity expeditions, including the highly publicised Running Dangerously, which saw him run through Afghanistan, Iraq and Somalia, and Barefoot Warrior which involved climbing Mt Kilimanjaro, the world's highest freestanding mountain, completely barefoot! In 2020 Jordan wrote his name into the Guinness Book of Records by running the deepest underground marathon (1000 metres below the surface in a mine) and by Standup Paddleboarding (SUP) for further and longer at sea than anyone ever has before in history (149 days / 2377 KM). Jordan Wylie - The Power of the Paddle: One man's mission to inspire hope through the spirit of adventure... with TRE's Hannah Murray
Jordan Wylie is not good at one thing in particular: being idle. This man does life-threatening adventure like most people go to the store. When Covid restrictions put a halt to his attempt to run 10 marathons in the 10 coldest places on the planet, Jordan rapidly switched plans to attempt to circumnavigate the United Kingdom on a stand up paddleboard. To add to the extreme level of difficulty in this quest, Jordan had to first learn to paddleboard, in less than 7 days. What may seem like pursuits of madness, for Jordan are in reality pursuits of purpose. He does not focus as much on how he is going to accomplish something as he does on why he is going to accomplish something. His “Why” for this sea voyage was a little boy in Africa who he had promised to build a school for. So his fundraising paddleboard expedition was to him not a choice but a duty. While England was in lockdown, Jordan took to the seas. Despite superhuman credentials, Jordan humbly makes it clear that he is not resistant to suffering and struggles. He details his harrowing experience with divorce that eventually led him to contemplate his final journey from a skyscraper in Dubai. The man who had once climbed Kilimanjaro barefoot and had fought off Somali pirates had nearly lost both his “why” and his will. With renewed determination, he is now trying to remove the stigma of mental illness and also to provide education for children who have few options. In my opinion, Jordan is superhero-like, and he is also remarkably human, in ways that enable him to change lives. His newest book, The Power of the Paddle, is an account of his world record-breaking paddleboard journey and will be released this fall. Jordan is a #1 best selling author, extreme adventurer, Guinness world record holder and most importantly he spends his time now overcoming large challenges in the name of charity. Jordan broke the world record for Stand Up paddleboarding in 2020, spending 149 consecutive days on the ocean all in the name of raising funds for others. Jordan spoke about mental health, tools the military gave him to be able to overcome obstacles, life outside the army and how he continues to be a beacon of light for others. Enjoy! “Opportunities are like standing on the platform at a train station, but the train doesn't stop to say I am an opportunity, you just have to grab one of them.” Jordan Wylie was born and raised in Blackpool before he spent ten years in the army. As a kid Jordan grew up on a council estate, but whatever he lacked materially he certainly didn't lack in terms of love and support. Football was his life, but at 15 or 16 he got distracted by other things as you do and found himself after finishing school with no qualifications and the military was the one place for him. The military gave Jordan a sense of purpose, but after getting injured, he was no longer able to fulfil his role that he had performed for ten years. After he left, he worked in Somalia fighting pirates for five years as a security guard. During this time, he had a break down with his partner and the mother of his daughter. Jordan admittedly got things wrong. He had valued the wrong things in life. He was chasing the materialistic dream and had forgotten what was important. Jordan had been living the dream of travel and being away from home but one day arrived back to an empty home. Jordan was diagnosed with severe depression and chronic anxiety, he came to the reality that, it is very easy to turn a negative situation and start blaming it on somebody else. The moment you can take responsibility, is the moment you can live a more fulfilled life. “Sometimes doing the right thing doesn't always feel great in the moment.” After travelling around the East coast of Africa and working within war zones, Jordan had always got to see the negative things that war, and conflict can bring. The children effected were always something that stuck with Jordan and therefore he decided that he wanted to give something back to these young people. Jordan now tries to make a difference to the lives of so many people. In 2020 Jordan wrote his name into the Guinness Book of Records by running the deepest underground marathon (1000 metres below the surface in a mine) and by Stand-up Paddle boarding for further and longer at sea than anyone ever has before in history (149 days / 2377 KM). He has raised over one million pounds for several amazing causes throughout the world. And lives by the mantra ‘Be the difference that makes the difference'. The foundation of Jordan's values are: Respect for others, courage, integrity, loyalty, discipline and selfless commitment. Just remember that “You can inspire so many if you live a life of value.” Resources:

For the vast majority of people, it takes a lot to raise money for a good cause. 4-6 weeks of sharing your fundraising page, cracking on with the challenge you've set yourself, whether that be running a virtual marathon, getting your steps in or planning a cook-along on Zoom. For Jordan Wylie, it's whole different ball game. He's run marathons in war-torn countries, rowed across the most dangerous stretch of water on Earth, climbed a mountain with no shoes on and paddle-boarded more than half-way around the UK during the pandemic. What can we learn from Jordan's story about what it takes to raise money for good causes? Subscribe now, if you haven't already!
Hello and welcome to Further Faster, in association with Montane. In each episode, host Daniel Neilson talks to two guests who push the boundaries. They could be explorers, mountaineers, or in the case of this episode, ultra runners or endurance athletes. This episode is about fear, or, rather, overcoming fear. Fear of failure, fear of the unknown, or simply, oh-my-god-what's-that-coming-out-of-the-dark-right-at-me type of fear. How do you mitigate fear? How to you overcome fear? How do you harness fear? We speak to Debbie Martin Consani, a runner and friend of the podcast. She is a brilliant runner. In her first Spine Race, one of the most gruelling races on the planet, she came second. We talk about training, preparing from the unknown, and why you should do something every year very much out of your comfort zone. But first Daniel spoke to Jordan Wylie, a former soldier, a hunter in the TV programme Hunted and maritime security expert. He's rowed solo across the Horn of Africa, ran through Afghanistan, Iraq and Somalia and, most recently, paddleboarded more than 2000km around the coast of Britain. But in a candid interview, Jordan is probably facing his biggest challenge of all: dealing with mental health issues during the pandemic. And if you're affected by any of these issues, remember there's always help available. Listen in to Jordan and Debbie's inspiring stories of bravery and adversity and ultimately, success.

Former soldier and security adviser Jordan Wylie has run and rowed across some of the most dangerous parts of the world to raise money for children in areas devastated by war. In his book Running For My Life, he talks about his treks across Afghanistan and Somalia, as well as his own struggles with mental health. Whether or not you are in a war zone, sometimes the best plan is just to put your head down and keep going. Great talking to Jordan, a very inspirational man. His charity Frontline Children is halfway through building a school on the Horn of Africa, with a few thousand pounds more they can get it finished. Jordan is also an ambassador for the Army Cadets and for the luxury watch brand Bremont.

If you enjoy todays episode please leave a 5* review. It really does help the show massively to get positive messages to more and more people who are in great need! Today on The Best Version Of You, we are joined by Jordan Wylie - A former soldier, bestselling author, extreme adventurer and also one of the stars of Channel 4's BAFTA nominated shows Hunted and Celebrity Hunted. Jordan grew up on the largest council estate in the UK and in the end joined the British Army after leaving school early with no qualifications. He served for ten years and saw Operational Service in Northern Ireland and Iraq where he specialised in military intelligence, reconnaissance and surveillance operations. On leaving the Army, Jordan entered the world of Maritime Security, making headlines after armed Somali pirates boarded a ship that he was protecting and Jordan found himself in charge and forced to make critical decisions for the safety of his crew. It was this experience that led Jordan to write “Citadel: The True Story of One Man's War Against the Pirates of Somalia”, which became a bestseller on publication in 2017. Jordan has since gone on to successfully complete numerous major charity expeditions, including the highly publicised 'Running Dangerously', which saw him run through Afghanistan, Iraq and Somalia, and 'Barefoot Warrior' which involved climbing Mt Kilimanjaro, Africa's highest mountain, completely barefoot! He has so far raised over a million pounds for charity and some of his expeditions have been made into documentaries on Sky TV. In recent years, Jordan has also returned to education, proving it doesn't matter where you start in life, there is always the opportunity to assert yourself and try again, he now holds a BA (Hons) and MA in the field of Security and Risk Management where he is an industry thought leader and commentator in the mainstream media with regular appearances on Sky News and the BBC. You can follow Jordan on all social media platforms @mrjordanwylie and via his website www.jordanwylie.org

Adventurer. Soldier. Author. Jordan Wylie is known for his challenges at the extreme end of the adventure spectrum. Described by Sir Ranulph Fiennes as “A determined, fearless adventurer and an inspiring man”, Jordan has run races in Iraq, Afghansistan and Somalia, he has written a book about his time tackling pirates off the coast of Africa, and he has hiked Kilimajaro... barefoot. But Jordan is also known for his passion for helping others in his role as an ambassador, trustee and campaigner for various international charities, including Frontline Children and Epilepsy Action. He was diagnosed with epilepsy himself after he contracted dengue fever whilst in Djibouti. But rather than letting it slow him down, Jordan took on the role of an epilepsy ambassador, and continues to push the boundaries of extreme adventure. We talked about: His most difficult challenge so far How he was diagnosed with epilepsy What an Extreme Adventurer does when they’re not adventuring - Who makes him starstruck His must-visit travel destinations How to limit epilepsy risk Swimming with crocodiles! Jordan Wylie is the author of "Citadel: The True Story of One Man’s War Against the Pirates of Somalia" and an expert in Maritime Security and Somali piracy. As much as we talk about the historical and pop culture aspects of pirates, I think it's important to also talk about how piracy still affects the modern world. And while the Somali's differ in a lot of ways from the old guys, they also share some common motivations. We'll dig into Jordan's background and how he came to maritime security. And he'll give us some great insight into why the Somalis felt the need to go on the account. Lots of great stuff in here including where piracy is happening in some lesser known spots now. Under The Crossbones is a podcast all about pirate culture. Your host Phil Johnson (comedian, musician, and pirate geek) interviews the most interesting people in the pirate subculture: Actors, Authors, Historians, Musicians, Artists, Festival Founders, Clothing and Prop Designers, Treasure Hunters, Archaeologists, and more. This weeks special guest is a good friend of mine from back home in Blackpool. He was the WBO Intercontinental and British Champion and is part of a select and elite group that has retained the Lord Lonsdale Belt having made three successful defences of the British title. He is one of the most humble men in professional sports and despite all his achievements which have included a mandatory world title fight in New York, he remains one of the most grounded professional sportsmen you will ever meet. I had the pleasure of interviewing 'The Lion' in his new boxing club and gym up in Lancashire. I am delighted to welcome Brian Rose to this weeks episode of 20 questions with me Jordan Wylie, I hope you enjoy listening as much as I enjoyed catching up with my old school mate! To hear more from 'The Lion' and stay up to date with his latest developments, please visit www.RoseBoxing.co.uk or follow @Brian_Lion_Rose
