In 2018, Mike Shoreman was thriving. He had a successful paddle boarding business in Toronto and he had just returned from a trip to California full of new ideas for excursions he could add to his business offerings. Everything changed when Mike's chicken pox virus was reactivated and he ended up with Ramsay Hunt syndrome. This neurological condition left him with shattered nerves in the right side of his face, hearing impairment and severe reduction in his mobility. Mike needed help doing every day things like showering and he was forced to close his business and move back in with his Mom. The doctors told him he might never paddle board again. Mike fell into a deep depression. As he slowly recovered, Mike knew he wanted to raise awareness and critical funds for mental health programs. In 2022, Mike became the first person with a disability to cross all five Great Lakes on a paddle board and he did it all for jack.org, an organization that funds mental health programs for youth. You'll hear Mike's full story including more about his recovery and his documentary, "When Hope Breaks Through", in this episode. 2023 is shaping up to be a banner year for Mike Shoreman. His mission to become the first person with a disability to cross all five Great Lakes is the subject of a new documentary that is making its debut at film festivals around the world. “When Hope Breaks Through”, is directed by award-winning filmmaker Matthew Wagner and the film explores the Canadian mental health crisis by following Mike's journey. The film is beautiful, inspiring and also raw and real as it documents the highs and lows of Mike's journey beginning with a devastating health crisis that left Mike immobile and unable to walk in 2019. Mike's crusade became one of the largest mental health awareness campaigns led by an individual in Canadian history. This athlete and advocate is now educating and motivating audiences to achieve their own excellence through his keynotes focused on mental health resilience, perseverance and drive. In this 1200th episode of Toronto Mike'd, Mike chats with Mike Shoreman about his Ramsay Hunt syndrome diagnosis, his subsequent mental health crisis, and how he got his mojo back and became the first person to paddle board across all five great lakes in a single summer. From a paddle boarding coaching career to becoming physically and mentally unbalanced. That's the life-changing call for this week's Team Never Quit guest, Mike Shoreman. Marcus and Mike discuss the affliction of the Ramsay Hunt Syndrome, and Mike's relentless never quit the pursuit of a “normal” life. His mission to prove everyone wrong not only resulted in walking again, but getting back on the paddle board despite his vertigo, and becoming the first person with a disability to cross from one country to another by paddle board while raising funds and awareness for youth mental health programs and services. He crossed all 5 Great Lakes. Mike encourages all people to change their personal struggles into their greatest weapons and develop confident versions of themselves. In this episode you will hear: My Chicken Pox from when I was a kid re-activated as Shingles. My symptoms developed over five days, and all the nerves in my face shattered and it looks like I had a stroke. I lost my independence, my business, and my identity. I had a significant mental crisis and breakdown. It was so easy to say “I'm fine.” I did that for months but I wasn't fine. As my physical recovery improved, so did my mental state. I was forced into mental health treatment. I wasn't eager to go and get it. Mental health is the most underfunded of all healthcare systems. That first crossing set everything in place that we needed to know. Lake Huron and Lake Michigan gave me the most fight. It took me 28 hours to cross. My feet “pruned” and I couldn't stand. The Canadian Coast Guard and paramedics came to be sure I was okay. The thing that set in was - Who this is for? I was going 2 1/2mph to 3mph for 28 hours. I was literally going to the bathroom on myself every 10 minutes. I had to say to myself “You've been through tougher than this and this isn't going to last forever. Men & women of service are deeply inspirational. Nothing in life is permanent. Life is a series of peaks and valleys. Resilience is built. Please come and meet the inspiring Mike Shoreman, "The Unbalanced Paddleboarder," in The Locher Room. While on a trip to India, Mike Shoreman stood before the Ganges River, and awakened his passion of inspiring others on the water. He returned home and became a professional paddle boarding coach, teaching stand-up paddleboarding and running a successful business. His dream of sharing his gift with students became a reality. Then one morning, his world changed and a sudden neurological condition called Ramsay Hunt Syndrome woke him up in excruciating pain. With a collapsed face, extreme vertigo, and the inability to walk properly, Mike thought his budding paddleboarding career had come to an abrupt end. Hopelessness enveloped him as he began to grieve his old life.Instead, Mike Shoreman channeled his pain into purpose. He used positive thinking to reverse the fall he was taking . He got back up and stepped bravely into a life that looks nothing like the one he had originally planned. He wrote “Diaries of The Unbalanced Paddleboarder: Crash and RISE: From Victim to Thriving Survivor” to highlight what it truly means to crash and rise again by transcending mental and physical limitations in order to share his light with the world. His story reminds us that it is always darkest just before the dawn. Original Airdate: 4/29/2021

This week we're thinking about: When Things Fall Apart, lessons from failure. The title of today's episode might be… triggering for some people. In recent years it has felt like we're all so busy re-framing things to make everything an opportunity, a lesson, a challenge, or a growth experience. I don't disagree that some events can be all of those things, but I think we can learn so much from accepting and acknowledging failure when we've set a goal and fallen short. With acceptance, we can step back and really see what led us down certain paths, and how we can make real changes to achieve our goals in the future.Today's episode is part two of a two episode series with my friend Mike Shoreman, and this is NOT the episode I thought we would be recording this week.If you missed the last episode, then let me introduce you to my friend Mike Shoreman, also known as The Unbalanced Paddleboarder. Last week Mike was on the podcast talking about his plans to attempt to become the first person with a disability to stand up paddleboard across Lake Ontario. I was right by his side for four days on the water as he attempted to break this record, and I was there when he made the decision to come off the water and try again next year. In many ways, this was a great success. Mike put the youth mental health charity Jack.org on the map and raised more than $50,000. He'll continue to fundraise this year, and we expect he'll raise more than $100,000 before this is all over. We could just re-frame this as a win, because in many ways it is. However, Mike is going back out there next year, and the lessons he learned from not accomplishing his goal are directly transferable to entrepreneurship. Mike Shoreman is a former Paddle Canada Coach, trainer, and expert in the stand up paddleboarding industry. In November 2018 after years of coaching professionally, Mike developed a sudden neurological condition causing him to lose his sense of balance, and experience extreme reactions to movement. Among other severe limitations, doctors told him he would never paddle again. Mike quickly proved them wrong as he re-learned how to walk, and within two years he was back on his paddleboard, unbalanced, but standing and pushing himself to achieve his goals. Mike is the author of Crash and Rise, an autobiographical book about his life and experiences, he's a renowned motivational speaker, the two-time winner of the International SUP Man Of The Year Award, and he's on the cusp of being a world record holder for The Crossing he's due to complete on August 24th 2022.Please donate today at http://jack.org/thecrossingLearn more about Mike and his mission: http://mikeshoreman.com/https://twitter.com/mikeshoremanhttps://www.instagram.com/theunbalancedpaddleboarder/https://www.facebook.com/theunbalancedpaddleboarderFollow Alexis on Instagramhttp://instagram.com/alexis.dovetailhttp://instagram.com/dovetailcommunityTo learn more about the podcast or follow us on social, visit https://thinkaboutthis.carrd.co/

I invited Mike onto the podcast this week because I believe that as entrepreneurs we can learn from his resilience, and be inspired by his story. When this podcast goes live, Mike will have just completed a world record breaking stand up paddle board 87 miles across Lake Ontario. He'll be the first person with a disability to complete the paddle, and I will be right by his side for the entire adventure.Mike Shoreman is a former Paddle Canada Coach, trainer, and expert in the stand up paddleboarding industry.
