Why are men so depressed, frustrated and angry? So many men struggle with feeling disconnected, low, maybe even depressed, and far removed from their sense of purpose, often facing overwhelm, sadness and isolation. Life can then feel flat, and modern societal pressures only add to this burden. You or your partner might feel stuck and unsure of where to start, and the term ‘crisis of masculinity' just seems to ring a bell that strikes a chord in us, but one where no music seems to play.  This show, and this 3 part series, is a journey of understanding male mental health. Men, like everyone else, need to grow, evolve, and connect with their true selves. Society often expects men to suppress emotions and prioritise logic over feelings, leading to profound unhappiness and mental health struggles. This is where I will argue that there is NO crisis of masculinity.  In this episode, we look to uncover the reasons behind the high rates of depression among men. Could it be a crisis in masculinity, societal changes or physiological factors like declining testosterone levels, increased obesity, and sedentary lifestyles? Or is there much more to this conversation than meets the eye.  This episode isn't just about understanding the problem; it's about finding solutions. So many people are bored with their life. Life feels the same. Life feels flat. Life feels like it's just not moving in the way you want it to. You might even be feeling really stuck, and have no idea where to start.  This is the journey of the Awesome Human. You are a human, and we must evolve, we must grow, we must follow our hearts in all that we do. We live in a world where most people are leading with logic and their brain, wrapped in the expectations of their parents, friends, and the world at large. This leads to unhappiness over time, because we are not connected to our truth. We are not honouring WHO we are.  In this show I get deep, fast, and you need to be ready to challenge everything you know to be true. Otherwise you will never set yourself free. But I'll end by giving you an 8 step battle plan on how to reignite the fire in all areas of your life.  The 8 Step battle plan:  Get rid of any negative or unsupportive people in your life, or at least learn how to distance yourself from them so their impact in minimal  Start to spend more time in silence, without the noise of social media, of podcasts, of external education. It's time to start to develop yourself from the inside out, not from the outside in, you can only listen to your truth, by listening to it. Watch less TV. Drive in silence more. Go on walks without your phone. Spend time meditating. Start to truly connect to yourself.  Get all of your physiological baselines catered for, which was the theme of my last show. Make sure you are sleeping well, eating well and moving well so you can set yourself to feeling good.  Remove anything that you rely on as a crutch. Remove alcohol. Remove drugs. Reduce your caffeine intake if you know it's excessive. Remove porn. Anything you lean on for self-care, we need to spend time without it to really lean into the uncomfort, and start to deal with it, rather than papering over it.  Write down what you dislike in your life right now, and be brave and honest. That might be your job, it might even be your partner. Honour that feeling, then write next to it the action that would lead to the solution. This stuff is going to need you to be brave, develop some long term strategies, and start to take action.  Write down a list of all the things that you love and bring you job, and how you can do more of these things / what's getting in the way of you doing more of these things  Get into breathwork, this is the single best thing I have done in the last 18 months. Go find a wim hof ½ day fundamentals course, learn about it, and start to invest in the power of the breath and intentions you have in your life. And over time learn how to be heart led, not head led, and really feel the transformative power of the breath.  Find your new tribe. What group or coach or friend can aid you on this path, and work together to achieve your vision. Soon after his second job… he was fired!He then went in search of a more ethical path, a business he could set up where the reward was equal to the work put in. “If they are making pounds, why am I making pennies?” - was his thought process, not happy with slow progression and bureaucracy (& having to wear smart shoes everyday). This lead him to opening a Recruitment business (not sure where the ethics went) which doubled in profit every year, for 4 years. He hated it. Golden handcuffs they call it.Fortunately, he used the cash he'd built up from that business, to educate himself in Property Investing. He then had a slow start -Purchasing 15 properties in his first 9 months, using over £650,000 of Investor Finance, he built a £1,200,000 property portfolio and created £30,000 of profit from flips. This gave him ‘financial freedom', but it was the most stressful period of his life. Growing quickly is very painful. He has worked in the fitness industry for 14 years as a personal trainer, coach and nutritionist as well as hosting the Ben Coomber Radio Podcast. I reached out to Ben after reading one of his social media posts about his experience with depression as a result of long Covid which, at the time of recording, he was just coming out of after 18 months. Ben is used to being both physically and mentally healthy and it was a big adjustment for him to slow down life in order to heal and recover fully.  Ben has done an incredible amount of research and experimentation in to recovery from long Covid and I think anyone who listens will get a lot out of his experience. We also chat about his journey in to fitness, learning to slow down, working on the inner stuff as well as the outer stuff and why the gym is not your therapy. It was brilliant to chat to Ben, there doesn't seem to be a great deal of conversation around long Covid and how it affects Serotonin levels or the actual recovery process and what's involved. Ben Coomber is the owner of Awesome Supplements. He is also a coach, nutritionist and host of the number one health and fitness podcast in the UK. Ben brings to life a decade in the health and fitness industry. He proves that fitness can and will always be inclusive. Ben speaks about how he cashed in on his identity and didn't espouse to his military school's expectations and archetype. Ben has excelled in every pocket of the health and fitness industry and acted upon numerous moments of courage that have allowed him to level up to the next rung. He has repeated this over a life time and has reaped the rewards. Ben draw's from his lessons from failure. Since leaving university, despite the ultimate highs, Ben and his businesses have had some serious lows. He remembers his accountant telling him that he needs £80k to stay afloat one month. Amidst this, he also agreed to completely remove dairy from his product line at a time where whey protein netted 20% of his sales. Why? To create identity capital. He wanted to be known as THE vegan supplement brand. He focussed his efforts towards sustainability by replacing tubs with sachets. One of my favourite moments of this podcast was when I asked "Do you have any regrets?". He replied "whenever I have had regret I have made sure I have replicated that opportunity". Ben is transparent about the sacrifices it takes to be an entrepreneur and a supplement brand founder. He debunks social medias fetishisation of entrepreneurship. He is extremely open-minded and wanted to give Veganuary a proper go this year to get a better understanding of conscious eating and living. I chat to him at the end of January to see how he found it. The answer? I think "eye opening" is the best way to describe it. I would say that he has learnt a lot - and although not staying vegan there are things that him and I agree need to change in this world if we are going to live long and healthy lives. This one is a little different. I talk with @bencoomber about his journey so far with Veganuary. Ben is a top guy, and a well known authority in the UK fitness and nutrition industry. I chat to him at the end of week 1 to see how he is finding it. The answer? Not so good.. In fact that is why he reached out so we could troubleshoot some of his feelings of emptiness and fatigue.
