This podcast is the audio version of the Gear Garage Live Show, where we answer submitted questions and talk all things whitewater. Topics and links that Zach talked about in this episode Answer Questions River Rescue Gear at River Hardware Some of the Questions that Zach covered in the Q&A section of this episode Topic: Highwater Middle Fork of the Salmon I'm invited on a MFS trip June 10. Super psyched! The trip leader wants to cap the trip at 5 feet, but I bet it will be higher. I'm pushing for a careful safe trip, even if higher than 5 feet. I feel up to the challenge 100%. The crew is solid. Any thoughts on flows and wisdom of going? I hate the idea of the permit being canceled. Thanks! Topic: Guide Shoes What about guides wearing Chacos... Do you have any thoughts about that? Topic: Rope Selection You've covered a lot on static line length and diameter on your previous videos, and I'm curious to hear more about material and buoyancy. On whitewater gear you offer the sterling super static 2 rope, but I don't believe that's a high floating material, and is quite a bit heavier without being stronger than some other equivalent 3/8" ropes like ultra line. Can you review a bit more on rope design/materials vs use in whitewater rescue applications? Sterling looks to be the standard in ropes, and their ultra line appears like the best overall option for weight/strength vs flotation. Only downside I can see is that ultra line is not available in sizes other than 1/4" and 3/8" if someone needs 11mm or larger. Topic: 18' Raft Owyhee What's your low flow cutoff for getting a medium to lightly loaded 18' raft down the Lower Owhyee? I'm able to make technical moves just not interested in getting high centered or squeezed all the time and having to get out to shove a whole bunch. Nuisance rapid for instance. Does an 18' even fit between boulders at flows less than 1K CFS? I'm 5 days out from launch and flows have been very slowly dropping, currently around 1300 CFS to 1400 CFS with no major precip in forecast. Motoring out and my 18' has the registration. Have a smaller raft with fishing frame and registration but its not rigged to motor and would like to avoid that hassle of frame changeover and assembly if possible. Thanks for your insights! Topic: IK Safety Thanks for this channel; it is an excellent resource for people like me who are new to rafting. Two buddies and I took the NWRC Class III rowing school last year, which was awesome. The Lower Salmon was one of the rivers the instructors recommended as a good first private trip, so we are planning a multi-day trip with our families on the Lower Salmon in mid-July. We will have three rafts. We have several high school kids in our group. I am considering bringing two or three inflatable kayaks for them to use if they want more excitement than riding in the rafts. Everyone will be in helmets and PFDs. The kids are strong swimmers and comfortable in the water. I have three questions: Where should we put the IKs in the group? I am thinking between the middle and last raft as that would leave two downstream rafts in case they swim. Would having three IKs in the water at one time be too many given we only have three rafts? Could you talk about how trip leaders monitor IKs on your commercial trips.

Welcome back to Through the inquisitor's lens, the podcast that explores the complex world of public inquiries and inquests, one question at a time.  In this episode, we explore whether Coroners' Prevention of Future Death (PFD) Reports are truly fit for purpose. Catherine Henney, Legal Director at Eversheds Sutherland, and David Pojur, Barrister at Lincoln House Chambers and Assistant Coroner for North Wales, discuss the statutory role of PFD reports, the training and guidance provided to coroners on when to issue them, and the frequently raised concern that PFDs lack real enforcement power, with no sanctions for those who fail to respond.  They also consider whether the approach of the new Chief Coroner signals a shift in emphasis, and whether we are likely to see greater scrutiny of PFD reports and of those who fail to engage with them.

If mealtimes feel like a battle in your home, you're not alone. Many parents struggle with picky eating, and I've experienced it firsthand with my daughter — who, like many kids, has earned the label of a "picky eater" in our family. But how do you know when picky eating is more than just a phase? I recently heard about Pediatric Feeding Disorders (PFDs) and was shocked, confused, and intrigued by the topic. When I learned how PFDs affect millions of children, yet they often go undiagnosed or misunderstood, leaving parents feeling frustrated and helpless, I knew that I had to learn more and spread the word. That's why in this episode of Chick Chat, we sit down with Jaclyn Pederson, CEO of Feeding Matters, to break it all down for us. Who is Jaclyn Pederson? With over a decade of experience in program development, Jaclyn Pederson's broad knowledge of programming in the public and social sectors includes program and strategic initiative design, fund development, special events, grant writing, and community engagement. A system thinker and positive team builder, she uses transformational leadership principles to develop energized and efficient workgroups that influence significant organizational and systemic change for all affected by pediatric feeding disorder – such as the development of the expanded PFD Alliance. Jaclyn also manages Feeding Matters' strategic partnerships with numerous professional associations including American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA), American Society of Parenteral and Enteral Nutrition, and the North American Society for Pediatric Gastroenterology, Hepatology and Nutrition (NASPGHAN). What Did We Discuss? In this episode, Jaclyn and I discussed everything about pediatric feeding disorders — from signs and symptoms to navigating and overcoming PFDs. Jaclyn also shares her expertise on when to seek help, how feeding disorders can impact a child's development, and what treatment options are available. Here are several of the questions that we covered in our conversation: What are Pediatric Feeding Disorders (PFDs)?  Can you tell us a bit about your personal experience with PFDs?  How common are PFDs?  What should families know about PFDs?  What are the signs and symptoms of PFDs that parents should be aware of?  What myths or misconceptions do you often encounter about picky eaters versus feeding disorders? How can a parent know when it's time to get their child evaluated for “picky eating”? Is there a connection between feeding disorders and developmental delays? How can parents advocate for their children when seeking help for feeding challenges? What does treatment for a PFD look like?  What advice do you have for parents feeling overwhelmed by their child's feeding challenges and looking for support? If you think your child's mealtime struggles go beyond picky eating, this episode is a must-listen. Jaclyn shares expert insights to help parents feel more confident in identifying and addressing Pediatric Feeding Disorders. Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome (EDS) is a multifactorial condition that can affect people across ages and genders. It can be very difficult to diagnose as some types of EDS are very rare and symptoms can be vague or be confused with other diseases. Pelvic floor dysfunction (PFD) is also a condition that can be difficult to diagnose for so many reasons. Both EDS and PFD are not taught to the extent to which they should in healthcare schools and is usually something that care providers need to research on their own or obtain higher education on. For this reason, when people with EDS have PFD, there are not a lot of health care professionals who fully understand both conditions to be able to treat them effectively. For this reason, Leia Mitchell, a women's sexual health physician assistant in NYC took it upon herself to research the intersection between EDS and PFD. In the episode, we cover the basics of EDS and PFDs and why they can be correlated. If you have hypermobility and vaginal issues (or either one), listen up!Leia works at The Centers for Vulvuvaginal Disorders and has recently published and article called "Identifying a correlation between hypermobile ehlers-danlos syndrome and genito-pelvic pain in cisgender women" and has won the Erwin Goldstein “Best Abstract Award” at the International Society for for the Study of Women's Sexual Health (ISSWSH).Leia Mitchell is originally from Atlanta, GA but grew up in Chattanooga, TN. Dave Spinks, perhaps best known for his appearances on the Travel Channel, the History Channel, and Destination America, says you can't beat the Mountain State when it comes to UFO lore. “Two of the earliest and most famous encounters in the U.S. were reported here,” Spinks says, referring to legendary encounters involving Mothman and the Flatwoods Monster. “But it was here, too, at Green Bank Observatory that Frank Drake established the first telescopes used in the SETI program—the Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence.” Read more: https://wvexplorer.com/2024/05/18/west-virginia-ufo-seti-green-bank-flatwoods-mothman/   #2 – From WVDNR – When it comes to wearing a life jacket while boating, there are many myths and misconceptions that people have come to believe. For example, you'd be surprised how many people think they don't need to wear a life jacket if they know how to swim or if they're on a large boat with other people. They couldn't be more wrong. The sad reality is that nearly 80 percent of people who die in boating accidents are not wearing life jackets. As we gear up for another summer of water adventures in West Virginia, it's crucial to set the record straight about life jackets, also known as personal flotation devices (PFDs). It's not something you can predict in advance—you need to arrive at the river and then figure out the puzzle by your powers of observation. But this podcast does get geeky so be prepared! Alright so I made it to Croatia in one piece and now the adventure begins!! But how did the trip go compared to what I was expecting? Let's just say, I was kept on my toes! Why did I pack that and not this?! Alright so like I mentioned last week, I packed for carryon only and packed light. In the end I think I did a pretty good job. The weather was much cooler than expected so another sweatshirt would have been nice. I somehow lost half of my underwear when we did our laundry so that was an adventure, but otherwise I did pretty well with the packing. As for boat gear, I would have liked to have had my binoculars and inflatable PFD. Only because the weather turned out to be a little sporty a couple of times. The charter company PFDs were purchased from a Titanic auction I think. I would have also liked to have had a set of flippers, goggles and a snorkel. They could have been purchased, but I'm a cheap Scot and have about 5 sets for 4 of us at home. It was challenging to find some medications, so bringing more would have been beneficial (allergy relief, polysporin, etc.). It was also really difficult to find decent sunscreen! The highest we were able to find at UV protection 30, and it was called sun milk. It definitely went on like milk. I'm sorry, that costs how much!!? Overall things were very affordable. You could buy towels, beer, food, clothes, etc., for very reasonable prices (bought a ball cap for $4 CND). The food was unbelievable! I was not expecting to have so many amazing meals. Again, at a very reasonable price. The octopus is a must try, especially when cooked traditionally by peka (try Rokis restaurant on the Island of Vis!). I think it will take years for that craving to go away... unbelievable. The other favourite thing we ate: PIZZA!! Wow they make amazing pizzas there! Loved the food scene... Beer and wines were also very affordable. I did find it hard to find a red wine that I really liked. I tend to prefer dark, leathery, smoky, red wines, and the Croatian reds were a bit lighter for me. But I kept trying ;-) The marinas also had great facilities and were quite reasonable in my opinion. Our 42' boat would be about $50/night which included fresh water and hydro, along with shower and washroom facilities. Now it was VERY busy when we were there, so the hot water in the marina showers was pretty much non-existent. But with water and power at your slip, a hot shower on the boat was a breeze. Marina staff were pleasant overall and Mediterranean mooring is much easier than most people think. Apparently in January 2023 Croatia will be adopting the Euro, so I anticipate that between the new currency, and the increase in tourism to the area, things are going to go up in price quite a bit.

Hey, I'm not sure if you've noticed, but there are SO MANY awesome outdoor resources available to us here in New England. Have you ever stopped to wonder how those amazingly mapped and maintained trail networks or hut systems or water access points come to be?Probably no surprise, there are a LOT of people and organizations hustling in the background, because big projects like those usually require a LOT of cooperation and alignment on a lot of fronts. For every great trail system you enjoy, there are probably 100 that never left the drafting table. It's not too difficult to recognize the beauty and potential when you're looking out from a mountain top or over a pristine lake or dramatic oceanfront cliff. But what about the turn of the century mill towns scattered across the state that used to harness Maine's countless rivers for manufacturing power? When buildings and dams and ugly fences and parking lots are crowding your urban center's waterfront, do you have any options?Today's guest says Heck YES! I'm stoked to welcome Kristina Cannon, Executive Director of Main Street Skowhegan to the pod today.I found Main Street Skowhegan after I saw some kind of social media post about a whitewater park that was going to be built on the Kennebec River in Maine and went down a Google rabbit hole (as one does). I had a mental picture of kayak racks and PFDs piled up in a dirt parking lot in some rural location along the river, but heck no - it's going to be right smack dab in the middle of downtown Skowhegan! The Skowhegan Riverpark Project is just one of about a zillion cool things that Main Street Skowhegan is working on, with Kristina at the helm, so I'm going to let her tell you all about it and get you stoked for your own Skowhegan Staycation. We just missed the craft brew fest, but there are plenty more reasons to visit Skowhegan coming up, head over to VisitSkowhegan.com or check out @visitskowhegan on Instagram and Facebook for all the details on upcoming festivals and events. Better yet, when you decide that Skowhegan sounds like a pretty cool place to take your remote work - where you can run some rapids in the morning, run your financials an hour later and be running out for locally sourced wood-fired pizza at lunch - go to Main Street Skowhegan or Skowhegan Entrepreneurship to find out how easy it will be to make those dreams your reality!More links from our conversation:Abby Bennett, Mahoosuc Land TrustJen Klein, Trustees of ReservationsWhat is a 'design charette'? Roy L Hales/ Cortes Currents - Reuben Buerge has been surfing sea kayaks in our area for the past 10 to 12 years. This relatively new sport only reached North America during the 1980s and Buerge is not aware of reaching the waters off Quadra Island more than two decades ago. “Surfing sea kayaks is a pretty kind of niche-y thing. You really only see it in a few areas in the world and we're lucky enough to have that amazing feature in our backyard that's perfect for us,” he explained. “It's not something people do everywhere because There's not features like this everywhere in the world. There's one more on our coast called Skookumchuck, that's a really popular spot for whitewater kayakers, but surfing sea kayaks is a pretty kind of niche-y thing. You really only see it in a few areas in the world and we're lucky enough to have that amazing feature in our backyard that's perfect for us.” There are two places to surf kayaks off Quadra Island. Surge Narrows is only a 15 minute paddle from the government dock at Hoskins landing. A 3-4 foot wave forms during the flood, which makes this a relatively safe place to learn how to handle a kayak in fast moving tidal water. “You wouldn't necessarily want to be going there alone. It can be hazardous still. You want to know how to roll your kayak and have a good group of people around you in case anything goes wrong,” said Buerge. “A modified a sea kayak seems to work best in most of these waves, but every once in a while you see guys join the party with a shorter standup paddle board or even a surfboard.” He explained that most sea kayaks are not ideal to surf. They're about 18 feet long, straight and paddle well, but they ‘don't have much rocker.' “The ones we use are around 15 and a half feet long and they have a whole lot of of rocker in them. They're shaped like a banana and it allows us to really be maneuverable in these waves,” he said. “You're totally locked right into your kayak. You got a spray skirt on, so your airtight, waterproof. Water can't enter your kayak.” The biggest waves are the Okisollo Rapids, at Cooper Point on the northern tip of Quadra island. “On a big flood tide, you usually need about nine knots of current to make a nice, big way for you. It'll get up to 5, 6 feet, with a deep kind of hole so that's definitely a lot more intimidating, a lot more consequence behind the wave and a lot more Water moving through,” said Buerge. He has never heard of anyone getting hurt. “The people that are coming to these areas are usually pretty well-prepared with immersion gear, but we're all wearing dry suits, PFDs (personal floatation devices) and we have rescue harnesses as well. So we can rescue friends that might've capsized and weren't able to roll up. We can get them back into their kayak pretty quick,” said Buerge. He added that people can watch videos of kayak surfing on YouTube and local courses teaching people how to use a kayak safely and have fun.

Ep. 57 Water Safety with Kaylee Kennedy

Kids Who Explore Parent Edition

We all want to be present with our children, right? That's what is so beautiful about swimming – there's no place that you could be more present. You need to be exactly where you are! Talking to Kaylee Kennedy, the founder of many swim schools, not only inspired us to get in the water with our children, but also taught us the best safety measures to take, and methods to teach to foster a love for the water.      Kaylee Kennedy, taught her oldest son to swim as a baby, and it bonded them in such a strong way. It inspired Kaylee to open up Saskatoon Swim School in the Fall of 2014 when her son was just a year old. Her overall philosophy of teaching beginners to swim is to do so as effectively and safely as possible. But it did not end there. In came K&K Swim School throughout Canada. Then, with the pandemic, came a whole new vision - teaching babies and toddlers to swim in their own bathtubs at home -  watermellow (previously, KKOnlineSwim)l was born.       Start Swimming with Kids:   Can start as young as 3-weeks-old   The younger, the better! [definitely before 14-months-old is ideal]   Can start in the bathtub   Can also learn in a hot tub that is set to 90-91 degrees [what you need for kids until around 3-years-old is depth, more than length]    Kids should be swimming once a week, or at least twice a month, so their body doesn't forget   Tip: Bring goggles for anywhere with a hot tub or a big bathtub!      Teaching Water as a Caregiver:   A large part is going under the water with your kids and having fun!   If you're not a confident swimmer, a swim school should be able to teach you that with your child   Once you want your child to learn technique, they can join swim lessons    Get in the water with them and hold them by their underarms and be their floatation device! The lighter your fingers, the more independence they have   Tip: Wear a T-shirt in the water – it allows your child to grab onto you      Typical Swim Groups [Swimming Doesn't Have to be Competitive]:   Synchro   Diving   Water Polo   Swim Team      Why We Are Not Fans of Self-Rescue Lessons:   Some methods of self-rescue can include listening to the child's input   Lots of aggressive forms of teaching self-rescue doesn't stay attuned to child's feelings and progression   The word “rescue” alone brings a fear to the water – a child should never have to rescue or save themselves in the water – if a child feels like they are going to die, that's a very traumatic experience (and then imagine that trauma over and over and over again)   The mindset doesn't match the intention; instead focus on learning to breathe, have fun, and swim, so children can become independent in the water      Let's Talk Water Safety:   Always, always, always, make sure child is at arm's reach from an adult [100% supervision]   Teach children to respect the strength of water by teaching them submerging, breath control, and calm controlled movements in the water   Kids learn by submerging again and again and again   The danger comes when kids don't know what water is capable of, so exposure is key!   Have a gate around pools and an alarm at the back door (and no doggy door) – remember non-swim times are the largest concern, so we need to teach our kids that they do not go in the water without us   When you go to a place with water, make going in the water the first thing you do, and watch what your kids do, so they learn boundaries       PFDs,  Lifejackets, and Puddle Jumpers:   These products should never be used as a replacement for parental supervision   They are meant to be used for if you were to fall off a boat and be knocked unconscious   Kids should not “learn to swim” in these - doesn't allow them to submerge and doesn't allow them to be in a horizontal position   It's not a great idea to wear them outside of the pool either, because it gives a false sense of security [that being said, you need to know your situation, and if you can be physically present with all your kids]     Book Recommendation: Finding Chika & The Stranger in the Lifeboat by Mitch Albom     Follow Kaylee's Swim School:  Websites: http://watermellow.com & http://kkswimschool.com  Facebook: Watermellow & KKSwimSchool  Instagram & TikTok: @watermellow.swim @knkswimschool    Check out KWE's #patch4apurpose to support 1, or all 8, charities: https://kidswhoexplore.com/product/original-explorer-patch4apurpose/    Today's Host: @adriannaadventures & @laurenrodycheberle from @kidswhoexplore  Production: @kpmediaproductions. Episode 8:  In today's episode, Molley and Chad are going to talk about two topics that can really determine how your day on the lake goes and how it ends.  Ramp rage is avoidable.  This discussion is important for new boaters, as well as experienced boaters.  Let's listen to some good advice. Before You Leave the House with Your Boat In Episode 6, Chad explained his pre-trip inspection routine.  You may want to go back and listen to it.  It's important that you visually inspect your wheels, hubs and lights.  It doesn't take long, but it could safe you some serious problems.  It's easier to fix issues now, before you have to do it on the side of the road or near the dock. Make sure everything is tight and secure.  This includes hooking up your rear safety straps, especially if you have a few miles to go, or if you're going to be traveling at highway speed. Completely secure and stow your Bimini top.  The wind can damage it if it's not properly protected.  Make sure the car or truck you're using is adequate for the weight of your boat.  This is critically important for pulling and more importantly, for safely stopping.  Knowing how to properly balance out the weight of the boat and trailer is a critical safety step.  It's about power and weight distribution.  Molley recommends taking wider turns when you're pulling your trailer.  The turn-angle is different based on the extra length.  Some boats can be longer than the car/truck pulling the boat.  If you're not careful, you can cause significant damage to your boat, trailer, signs, etc. Trailering Your Boat Consider taking an extra safety strap (i.e. come-along).  Chad uses his to make sure the boat is securely locked in to protect the boat and anyone who may be in the boat.  Molley describes 2 examples of problems they've personally experienced. Know the vehicle and your various ratings (i.e. weigh rating, tow rating, tongue rating, etc.).  You have to be safe when you're towing a boat.  These ratings are listed for a reason. ProTip:  Consider covering the boat windshield with Press'n Seal food wrap.  When you get to your destination, you can rip it off and you'll have one less item to clean. Ramp Etiquette This is a sensitive topic.  Plan your loading process.  Use the ramp wisely so you don't unnecessarily impede the other boaters who are trying to get their boats in or out of the water.  This is especially important for new boaters.  You have to practice and make sure everyone involved has a specific job to make it go as efficiently as possible.  It always works better with 2 people or more. If you have new people going out on the water with you, take time to explain what's going to happen during launch.  Explain how they can help or what might cause additional problems.  Remember, they're new to this.  The easier it goes, the better your day on the water will go. Take advantage of “the gravel lot” to prep for launch.  Use this area, not the ramp, to load your coolers, tubes and other items.  Let people get seated before you get in line for the ramp.  Make sure your boat's battery is charged.  Take time to turn on the blower for 5-6 minutes if the boat has been sitting for more than 24 hours.  Have your young children put on their PFDs.  Finally, make sure the boat's plug is secure.  Now you're ready to hit the ramp. ProTip:  If you're new to the area, call ahead to the ramp.  Ask for the best launch times, based on your experience.  If a certain slot is typically crowded, you may want to wait until the majority of experienced boaters have launched.  The people working at the dock or ramp generally have a good feel for the volumes during the day. Avoid Power Loading Around the Ramp Revving your motor unnecessarily is actually bad for the ramp, your boat and more.  It tends to cause sediment to build up near the ramp, which will cause problems down the road.  This usually occurs when people are done for the day and are trying to load the boat back on the trailer. Using the Courtesy Dock There's usually a dock near the ramp.  It's for loading and unloading the items and people.  Be courteous to others and try to use it efficiently.  The more organized you are the better.  If you're waiting for someone, float around somewhere further out in the water.  Remember, you might be impeding the approach or angle for someone else who is trying to launch or load their boat.  Patience here is a virtue.  As we detailed in Episode 7, Don't Be THAT GUY! Much of practicing ramp etiquette really comes down to organization, courtesy, practice and patience.  Stay focused and ask for help if you need it.  We've all been there.  Remember, this is supposed to be fun. That's a wrap for this episode.  I hope you found it helpful, insightful and maybe a little entertaining. Thanks for Listening! If you enjoyed this podcast, please consider sharing it with your friends.  We hope to see you out there soon.  Until next time, here's to warm weather and calm waters! Don't forget to subscribe!

Guest: Dr. Kristen West, M.A., CCC-SLP - In today's episode of First Bite, we are delighted to welcome back Dr. Kristen West, M.A., CCC-SLP, to discuss her work as an SLP in public schools. Kristen is an assistant professor in the Department of Communication Sciences and Disorders at Edinboro University in Pennsylvania and is currently also pursuing her educational doctorate at Slippery Rock University. In our conversation with Kristen, we delve into the challenges of setting up a program in public schools and how her journey led her to work in that space. We spend some time appreciating the role that advocacy plays when it comes to special education services in schools and how our host Michelle Dawson, in collaboration with Angie Neal, was able to pass a proposal that countless children in South Carolina will benefit from for years to come. Listening in, you'll hear Michelle break down the many aspects of working as an SLP in public schools and what she has learned throughout her career. She expands on the inextricable relationship between nutrition and learning, why cafeterias pose a unique challenge to children with PFDs, and why teamwork between nurses, teachers, and parents is essential. We loved having Kristen back on the show and we know you'll find the conversation as informative and inspiring as we did! For all this and much more, join us today!

Our guest today works at the intersection of all of these. Her name is Kristen West, and she is an expert on all things related to Pediatric Feeding Disorder (PFD). One in 37 children under five in the United States struggle with PFDs, and we are thrilled that there is soon to be an ICD 10 code that accurately captures PFDs for the first time. Alongside numerous other roles, Kristen is the Director of Education for the Dysphagia Outreach Project (DOP), and the work she is doing through this organization is what forms the basis of our conversation today. Kristen is passionate about equipping communities with the skills and resources they need in order to ensure the best possible outcomes for children with feeding and swallowing issues. The lack of continuity of care, overarching feeding programs, and funding, make this a difficult task, but Kristen is well prepared for the challenge. Kristen shares with us today what she has learned over many years about bridging the gap between knowledge and action, sharing resources, transition meetings, and the importance of getting everyone on board with the mission to help children who are struggling with PFD's. Feeding is a paramount life skill, and the interventions that DOP is implementing, are changing lives!

Free Report HERE: https://pelvicpainrelief.com/masterclass   What is the pelvic floor and why is it important for optimal health? The pelvic floor includes the muscles, ligaments and connective tissue in the lowest part of the pelvis. It supports your organs, including the bowel, bladder, uterus, vagina, and rectum. The pelvic floor prevents these organs from falling down or out of your body. It also helps the organs function properly.   What’s Pelvic Floor Dysfunction (PFD)? Pelvic floor dysfunction is the inability to correctly contract (tighten) and relax the muscles in the pelvic floor to have a bowel movement. The pelvic floor is a group of muscles in the floor of the pelvic area. These muscles support the organs in the pelvis, and some form a sling around the rectum and vagina. Although embarrassing or sometimes painful, pelvic floor dysfunction is a highly treatable condition. Talk with your doctor about your symptoms to get a proper diagnosis. There are several home remedies you can try before resorting to medication or surgery for treatment.   Pelvic Floor Dysfunction Risk Factors Life Stage Pregnancy/Childbirth Childbirth can contribute to the development of PFDs, because it can put excessive strain on the pelvic floor during delivery. Vaginal births double the rate of pelvic floor disorders compared to Cesarean deliveries or women who never gave birth. Menopause The pelvic floor muscles often weaken during menopause, which can lead to the development of pelvic organ prolapse (POP). Senior The strength of the pelvic floor deteriorates as women age, which can also lead to the development of POP.   Race & Ethnicity Genetic Some women are born with weaker pelvic floor muscles. This puts them at a greater risk for PFDs. If your mother or sister have a PFD, you are at higher risk of developing one. Race Caucasian women are more likely to develop prolapse and to have urine leakage related to coughing, sneezing and activities. African American women are more likely to have urinary leakage related to urgency. Ethnicity Mexican American women are more likely to struggle with urinary incontinence than other Hispanic/Latino women. However, this difference may reflect a reluctance to seek medical care and/or language barrier. Lifestyle Obesity Overweight or obese women have increased pressure on the bladder and often lack strength in their pelvic muscles. They are at an increased risk of developing POP and urinary incontinence (UI). Smoking Women who smoke increase their risk of developing POP and UI. If you smoke, quit now. Smoking is generally not good for bladder health. It also can damage connective tissue in your body, including the tissue in your pelvic area. Diet When there is not enough fiber or water in a woman’s diet, bowel movements are more likely to be hard or irregular. Processed foods can lead to constipation. Certain foods also can irritate the bladder, making women feel like they have to urinate. Bladder irritants include caffeine and alcohol. Heavy Lifting/Exertion Certain occupations, usually those that involve heavy lifting or exertion can increase the risk of developing PFDs. Repetitive strenuous activity is also a risk. For some women, stair climbing can cause leakage.   Health Problems/Medical History Constipation/Chronic Straining Straining with constipation puts significant pressure on the weak vaginal wall and can further thin it out. This increases the risk for prolapse. Pelvic Injury/Surgery Loss of pelvic support can occur when the pelvic floor is injured from falls, car accidents or surgery. Hysterectomy and other procedures that treat pelvic organ prolapse can sometimes cause further prolapse. Lung Conditions/Chronic Coughing Chronic respiratory disorders can cause increased pressure in the abdomen and pelvis, which increases the risk of POP. Sexual Dysfunction Pelvic floor symptoms are significantly associated with reduced sexual arousal, infrequent orgasm, and painful intercourse (known in medical terms as dyspareunia).   Emotional Impacts When women, or men, come to Isa, typically they're at the end of their rope. Many of them are depressed, many of them feel like their bodies have betrayed them. Lost connection with their loved one. Internalize their struggle and feel something is deeply wrong with them. In early December the guys @CarbonologySport shared some vintage footage of the 1983 Port Elizabeth to East London (PE2LE) 4 Day Stage Race. It generated a lot of intrigue on Facebook, and I thought it would be great to sit down with Oscar and have him walk us through what it was like to race surfskis on the open ocean almost 40 years ago. We spend a large portion of the discussion on the PE2LE. But in classic Oscar fashion we also cover a host of other entertaining and educational topics including but not limited to: Oscar's first couple of times racing the PE2EL as a teenagerSurfski designs and construction in the early 80sPaddle design, length, and feather in the early 80s Gauging effort before the days of GPS and HR MonitorsPaddling the open ocean with no leashes, PFDs, or sunscreenNutrition and hydration strategies before the days of gu, energy bars, and hydration bladdersWhat has evolved for the better and what has proven the test of time Here is a link to the book Waterlogged by Tim Noakes which Oscar references and in which he was one of the first athletes tested that led to Noakes ground breaking and controversial discovery that the conventional wisdom on hydration during sport was wrong.

Roughly 1 in 4 women suffer from some form of Pelvic Floor Dysfunction (PFD). There could be quite a few areas within the pelvic floor that might not function properly, but the most common issue is incontinence. Nearly 1 in 5 women suffer from urinary incontinence, which makes up the majority of PFDs. For an issue that is so widely spread across our communities, many of the conversations aren't about ways to improve these issues. Most people assume that incontinence is just a byproduct of getting older. The post 44- Reducing Incontinence by Retraining the Female Pelvic Floor appeared first on Summit For Wellness.

In this episode of the No Harm Health and Safety Podcast, Marvin returns to the Shuswap Lake System in British Columbia to talk to Pat Gau, Deputy Station Leader for the Royal Canadian Marine Search and Rescue. The topic: Kids Don't Float! Kids Don't Float is the somewhat provocative name of a public safety program in BC that pretty much tells it like it is. And because kids don't actually float (neither do you), the dedicated volunteers at the Royal Canadian Marine Search and Rescue started a program to provide loaner life jackets to boaters who don't have the right size personal floatation devices (PFDs) for children. The program has been an amazing success! We hope you will consider using this episode as inspiration for a safety moment within your organization, where you may want to talk about boating safety at one of your toolbox talks or staff meetings. You can paraphrase what you learn here, or simply play this episode during your meeting. No Harm is the health and safety podcast for HSE professionals. What is OEB48? Well basically it's an Operations Engineering Bulletin that was issued by Airbus to all operators to cover the possibility of all AoA probes becoming "blocked" which could then cause the aircraft to go into unwanted protections.   FAC computes GW and sends it to the ELAC. FAC uses aerodynamic data to calculate and display characteristic speeds on the PFD ELAC computes activation of protections   The reason αprot decreases with mach number is due to two things, compressibility effect and critical mach number. Above about Mach 0.6, Calibrated Air Speed and Equivalent Air Speed diverge due to compressibility effects, meaning CAS over-reads compared to EAS. Airbus and most other aircraft PFDs show CAS on the airspeed tape, so at higher Mach numbers the Vls, aProt and aMax displayed must increase to compensate for the growing difference between EAS and CAS. The other effect is caused by increasing the Mach number into the transonic range. This eventually causes small shockwaves to form on the wing, which grow in size as the flight Mach number and/or AOA increase. These shockwaves disturb the airflow behind them, reducing the lift of the wing compared to subsonic flight conditions for the same AOA. The relationship between CL and AOA are adjusted to compensate. The effect is the stall equivalent airspeed increases because the shockwaves cause CLmax to decrease. Finally, the shockwaves can also cause the wing to stall at a lower AOA, but this is all dealt with through reduced CLMax and thus higher stall speed.   CAS Link https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Calibrated_airspeed EAS link https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Equivalent_airspeed Critical Mach Number link https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Critical_Mach_number Accident interim report for Lufthansa Accident http://www.bfu-web.de/EN/Publications/Interim_Reports/IR2014/I1_Report_14_6X014_A321_Pamplona.pdf?__blob=publicationFile   www.A320podcast.com www.facebook.com/A320podcast
