This podcast is the audio version of the Gear Garage Live Show, where Zach answers submitted questions and talks all things whitewater. In this episode, Zach addresses the necessity of rescue harnesses on PFDs for rafters and highlights new online training opportunities for rowing and rescue skills. Episode Summary Zach begins the show by highlighting his online rowing and rescue schools. These courses are designed to provide foundational knowledge that can be difficult to find in a structured format elsewhere. While video training can never replace real time on the oars, these lessons—ranging from basic rowing to advanced class IV and V skills—offer a comprehensive and organized resource for boaters at all levels. The main topic of the episode centers on rescue harnesses (quick-release belts) on PFDs. Following up on a previous discussion, Zach shares a viewer's comment about why many boaters wear rescue PFDs despite having little use for the actual harness. The consensus is that the highest quality materials, most durable fabrics, and most functional pockets are often only found on "rescue" models like the Astral Green Jacket. Zach compares these to non-rescue versions, such as the Astral Bowen (formerly the Blue Jacket), noting that the latter often features thinner, less durable mesh fabrics. Zach advocates for manufacturers to offer high-quality, "pro-level" PFDs that include the best pockets and materials without the added weight and complexity of a rescue harness, which he feels can sometimes be a negative for dedicated rafters. Topics and links that Zach talked about in this episode Training: Online Rowing School and Foundations of Whitewater Rescue. Gear: Comparing the Astral Green Jacket and the Astral Bowen. Safety: The debate over rescue harnesses for private rafters. Key Discussion Points from this Episode Topic: Training. Why should boaters consider online rescue and rowing courses? Topic: PFD Design. Why are the best pockets and materials restricted to rescue PFDs? Topic: Rescue Harnesses. Is the added weight and complexity of a rescue belt worth it for a rafter? Topic: Gear Comparisons. What are the primary differences between "pro" and "standard" PFD models? This podcast is the audio version of the Gear Garage Live Show, where Zach talks shop on technical rafting setups and river safety. In this episode, Zach dives into the math behind oar length, the essential knots every boater must know, and a controversial "rant" about the dangers of rescue harnesses for most private boaters. Episode Summary Zach starts the episode with a technical deep dive into oar length. He explains that choosing the right oar isn't just about the width of the boat, but about the "leverage ratio" between the inboard and outboard sections. He provides a specific formula to help boaters find their "sweet spot" to avoid fatigue and shoulder injury while maintaining power in heavy water. The conversation shifts to essential skills, specifically knots. Zach identifies the few critical knots that solve 99% of river problems, emphasizing the Bowline, the Figure 8 series, and the Taut-line hitch. He argues that mastery of a few versatile knots is far superior to having a shallow understanding of many. The episode concludes with a serious safety discussion regarding rescue harnesses (quick-release belts) on PFDs. Zach shares his concern that many boaters wear them without ever practicing "live bait" rescues, effectively carrying a "loaded gun" on their chest. He challenges the industry to reconsider if these tools belong in the hands of anyone without professional-level training and constant practice. Topics and links that Zach talked about in this episode Technical Skills: Essential knots for rafting and rowing. Gear Setup: Calculating oar length leverage ratios. Safety Controversy: The pros and cons of PFD rescue harnesses. Some of the Questions that Zach covered in the Q&A section Topic: Oar Length. "How do I know if my oars are too long or too short for my frame width?" Topic: Knots. "What is the best knot for tying a raft to a trailer or a tree?" Topic: PFD Features. "Should I buy a rescue vest even if I haven't taken a swiftwater course?" Topic: Frame Setup. "Does oar tower height affect the leverage of my rowing stroke?" Zach's Key Takeaways The 1:2 Leverage Rule: Aim for a leverage ratio where your inboard length is roughly half of your outboard length to maximize efficiency. Practice the Release: If you wear a rescue harness, you must practice pulling the toggle under tension; otherwise, it's a liability, not a safety tool. Knot Mastery: If you can't tie a Bowline behind your back or in the dark, you don't know it well enough yet for a high-stress river rescue. A glass wall, a dozen yellow-eyed timber wolves, and a wind that wouldn't let up—our northern run from Wawa to Timmins had all the ingredients for a trip that teaches more than it takes. We hit record in the truck ride home to unpack what really worked: turning ugly chop into a pattern, trusting shade over sunshine, and letting a leaky tin boat and a pair of deep-diving cranks do the heavy lifting when cameras—and anglers—couldn't stand. We walk through the surprising spots and exact setups that changed our week. On big, windswept basins, we drift-trolled crystal minnows over 30–40 feet to target suspended walleye riding mid-column, no kicker required. When LiveScope lit up with fish that wouldn't move on a rattlebait—after it crushed the day prior—we swung around the corner into the lee of a cliff, dropped live bait in 30–35 feet, and watched a neutral school switch on. Think of wind as moving structure: riprap gaps that funnel flow, single boulders that pin crayfish, narrow channels that compress current. We also dig into tools without the hype—Kraken/Spot-Lock anchor mode, five-foot jog moves to land precisely on marks, and the critical cross-check between traditional sonar and forward view to avoid chasing “mushroom” bottom returns.Threaded through the stories are the small choices that keep you fishing: wearing auto-inflate PFDs, picking routes you can run back, and knowing when to call a windy hump and find softer water you can fish cleanly. We shout out local guides around Timmins, the bite heating up on Horwood Lake, and a can't-miss sequence from Airdale Lodge you'll see on Fish'n Canada. Come for the wolves, stay for the wind logic you can use this weekend—no matter your boat or budget.Enjoyed this one? Emily welcomes NSSGA's Senior Manager of Communications, Madalynn Habron to the podcast today for a discussion regarding critical water safety. Madalynn, a former lifeguard and swim instructor, shares insights on drowning prevention, the importance of swim lessons, recognizing distress signs, and how safety training principles extend from recreational activities to the aggregate industry workplace. Madalynn shares a personal near-drowning story, underscoring the need for constant vigilance around water. The discussion includes CDC child drowning statistics, the often quiet nature of drowning, and risks in shallow water. Listeners will gain practical advice on fencing, supervision, using PFDs, and adhering to safety protocols at aggregate facilities. A central theme is how robust safety training cultivates a lasting safety-conscious mindset, benefiting individuals and their families both at home and on the job. Main Themes: Maintaining active supervision around water. Drowning can happen quickly and silently. Swim lessons are vital for children and adults. Madalynn's story regarding the role of quick action and alertness in saving a toddler Using barriers and approved PFDs for added safety. Specific water safety protocols protect workers at aggregate sites. Consistent safety training builds instinctual, life-saving responses. Safety skills learned at work also protect loved ones at home. Toolbox Talk Discussion Questions: Madalynn talks about her experience as a lifeguard and how water safety has always been a part of her life. Why do you think it's important to teach safety lessons early, whether that's in life or professionally? Madalynn shares some ways in which we can keep safe while working around water. What are some critical controls for working around water at our site? Does anyone have a story they would like to share about water safety? Key Takeaways: "Drowning is quick and usually quiet. Recognizing this and acting can save lives." "Start swim lessons early. It's never too late to learn." "Be aware and prepared. Situations can change in an instant." "Train regularly. Reacting becomes second nature when you can fall back on training." "Training follows you home. Safety practices at work keep loved ones safe too." "Supervise children near water. Even a foot of water can be dangerous." "Follow lifeguard instructions. Parents should still supervise their children closely." "Less confident swimmers can wear a U.S. Coast Guard approved personal flotation device." "Proper policies and procedures must be in place and adhered to around water." "Spending time in water is safe with early lessons and regular exposure to water safety." This podcast is the audio version of the Gear Garage Live Show, where we answer submitted questions and talk all things whitewater. Topics and links that Zach talked about in this episode Answer Questions River Rescue Gear at River Hardware Some of the Questions that Zach covered in the Q&A section of this episode Topic: Highwater Middle Fork of the Salmon I'm invited on a MFS trip June 10. Super psyched! The trip leader wants to cap the trip at 5 feet, but I bet it will be higher. I'm pushing for a careful safe trip, even if higher than 5 feet. I feel up to the challenge 100%. The crew is solid. Any thoughts on flows and wisdom of going? I hate the idea of the permit being canceled. Thanks! Topic: Guide Shoes What about guides wearing Chacos... Do you have any thoughts about that? Topic: Rope Selection You've covered a lot on static line length and diameter on your previous videos, and I'm curious to hear more about material and buoyancy. On whitewater gear you offer the sterling super static 2 rope, but I don't believe that's a high floating material, and is quite a bit heavier without being stronger than some other equivalent 3/8" ropes like ultra line. Can you review a bit more on rope design/materials vs use in whitewater rescue applications? Sterling looks to be the standard in ropes, and their ultra line appears like the best overall option for weight/strength vs flotation. Only downside I can see is that ultra line is not available in sizes other than 1/4" and 3/8" if someone needs 11mm or larger. Topic: 18' Raft Owyhee What's your low flow cutoff for getting a medium to lightly loaded 18' raft down the Lower Owhyee? I'm able to make technical moves just not interested in getting high centered or squeezed all the time and having to get out to shove a whole bunch. Nuisance rapid for instance. Does an 18' even fit between boulders at flows less than 1K CFS? I'm 5 days out from launch and flows have been very slowly dropping, currently around 1300 CFS to 1400 CFS with no major precip in forecast. Motoring out and my 18' has the registration. Have a smaller raft with fishing frame and registration but its not rigged to motor and would like to avoid that hassle of frame changeover and assembly if possible. Thanks for your insights! Topic: IK Safety Thanks for this channel; it is an excellent resource for people like me who are new to rafting. Two buddies and I took the NWRC Class III rowing school last year, which was awesome. The Lower Salmon was one of the rivers the instructors recommended as a good first private trip, so we are planning a multi-day trip with our families on the Lower Salmon in mid-July. We will have three rafts. We have several high school kids in our group. I am considering bringing two or three inflatable kayaks for them to use if they want more excitement than riding in the rafts. Everyone will be in helmets and PFDs. The kids are strong swimmers and comfortable in the water. I have three questions: Where should we put the IKs in the group? I am thinking between the middle and last raft as that would leave two downstream rafts in case they swim. Would having three IKs in the water at one time be too many given we only have three rafts? Could you talk about how trip leaders monitor IKs on your commercial trips.

Welcome back to Through the inquisitor's lens, the podcast that explores the complex world of public inquiries and inquests, one question at a time. In this episode, we explore whether Coroners' Prevention of Future Death (PFD) Reports are truly fit for purpose. Catherine Henney, Legal Director at Eversheds Sutherland, and David Pojur, Barrister at Lincoln House Chambers and Assistant Coroner for North Wales, discuss the statutory role of PFD reports, the training and guidance provided to coroners on when to issue them, and the frequently raised concern that PFDs lack real enforcement power, with no sanctions for those who fail to respond. They also consider whether the approach of the new Chief Coroner signals a shift in emphasis, and whether we are likely to see greater scrutiny of PFD reports and of those who fail to engage with them.
If mealtimes feel like a battle in your home, you're not alone. Many parents struggle with picky eating, and I've experienced it firsthand with my daughter — who, like many kids, has earned the label of a "picky eater" in our family. But how do you know when picky eating is more than just a phase? I recently heard about Pediatric Feeding Disorders (PFDs) and was shocked, confused, and intrigued by the topic. When I learned how PFDs affect millions of children, yet they often go undiagnosed or misunderstood, leaving parents feeling frustrated and helpless, I knew that I had to learn more and spread the word. That's why in this episode of Chick Chat, we sit down with Jaclyn Pederson, CEO of Feeding Matters, to break it all down for us. Who is Jaclyn Pederson? With over a decade of experience in program development, Jaclyn Pederson's broad knowledge of programming in the public and social sectors includes program and strategic initiative design, fund development, special events, grant writing, and community engagement. A system thinker and positive team builder, she uses transformational leadership principles to develop energized and efficient workgroups that influence significant organizational and systemic change for all affected by pediatric feeding disorder – such as the development of the expanded PFD Alliance. Jaclyn also manages Feeding Matters' strategic partnerships with numerous professional associations including American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA), American Society of Parenteral and Enteral Nutrition, and the North American Society for Pediatric Gastroenterology, Hepatology and Nutrition (NASPGHAN). What Did We Discuss? In this episode, Jaclyn and I discussed everything about pediatric feeding disorders — from signs and symptoms to navigating and overcoming PFDs. Jaclyn also shares her expertise on when to seek help, how feeding disorders can impact a child's development, and what treatment options are available. Here are several of the questions that we covered in our conversation: What are Pediatric Feeding Disorders (PFDs)? Can you tell us a bit about your personal experience with PFDs? How common are PFDs? What should families know about PFDs? What are the signs and symptoms of PFDs that parents should be aware of? What myths or misconceptions do you often encounter about picky eaters versus feeding disorders? How can a parent know when it's time to get their child evaluated for “picky eating”? Is there a connection between feeding disorders and developmental delays? How can parents advocate for their children when seeking help for feeding challenges? What does treatment for a PFD look like? What advice do you have for parents feeling overwhelmed by their child's feeding challenges and looking for support? If you think your child's mealtime struggles go beyond picky eating, this episode is a must-listen. Jaclyn shares expert insights to help parents feel more confident in identifying and addressing Pediatric Feeding Disorders. Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome (EDS) is a multifactorial condition that can affect people across ages and genders. It can be very difficult to diagnose as some types of EDS are very rare and symptoms can be vague or be confused with other diseases. Pelvic floor dysfunction (PFD) is also a condition that can be difficult to diagnose for so many reasons. Both EDS and PFD are not taught to the extent to which they should in healthcare schools and is usually something that care providers need to research on their own or obtain higher education on. For this reason, when people with EDS have PFD, there are not a lot of health care professionals who fully understand both conditions to be able to treat them effectively. For this reason, Leia Mitchell, a women's sexual health physician assistant in NYC took it upon herself to research the intersection between EDS and PFD. In the episode, we cover the basics of EDS and PFDs and why they can be correlated. If you have hypermobility and vaginal issues (or either one), listen up!Leia works at The Centers for Vulvuvaginal Disorders and has recently published and article called "Identifying a correlation between hypermobile ehlers-danlos syndrome and genito-pelvic pain in cisgender women" and has won the Erwin Goldstein “Best Abstract Award” at the International Society for for the Study of Women's Sexual Health (ISSWSH).Leia Mitchell is originally from Atlanta, GA but grew up in Chattanooga, TN. She graduated from Georgia Institute of Technology with a B.S. in Biochemistry. Ms. Mitchell obtained her Master in Biophysics and Physiology from Georgetown University and Masters of Medical Sciences from Mercer University where she graduated as Valedictorian. After working as a PA for several years, she is currently beginning school again to become a Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine.Connect with her:@the_womenshealth_pa

Welcome to the daily304 – your window into Wonderful, Almost Heaven, West Virginia. Today is Saturday, May 25, 2024. West Virginia is a hotbed of UFO activity, according to a renowned paranormal investigator…As boating season kicks into full swing, the WVDNR urges folks to take life jackets seriously…and Innovators & Entrepreneurs chats with leaders of MHIRJ, an aviation company in Bridgeport that's looking to hire 400 technicians…on today's daily304. #1 – From WV EXPLORER – A renowned paranormal investigator says West Virginia has a remarkable association with UFO activity because of its role in the search for extraterrestrial life and because it was the location of many early alleged UFO encounters. Dave Spinks, perhaps best known for his appearances on the Travel Channel, the History Channel, and Destination America, says you can't beat the Mountain State when it comes to UFO lore. “Two of the earliest and most famous encounters in the U.S. were reported here,” Spinks says, referring to legendary encounters involving Mothman and the Flatwoods Monster. “But it was here, too, at Green Bank Observatory that Frank Drake established the first telescopes used in the SETI program—the Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence.” Read more: https://wvexplorer.com/2024/05/18/west-virginia-ufo-seti-green-bank-flatwoods-mothman/ #2 – From WVDNR – When it comes to wearing a life jacket while boating, there are many myths and misconceptions that people have come to believe. For example, you'd be surprised how many people think they don't need to wear a life jacket if they know how to swim or if they're on a large boat with other people. They couldn't be more wrong. The sad reality is that nearly 80 percent of people who die in boating accidents are not wearing life jackets. As we gear up for another summer of water adventures in West Virginia, it's crucial to set the record straight about life jackets, also known as personal flotation devices (PFDs). Click the link to read about five common myths about life jackets and why these misconceptions are wrong. The West Virginia Division of Natural Resource encourages you to take PFDs seriously. Because your life depends on it! Read more: https://wvdnr.gov/life-jacket-myths/ #3 – From INNOVATORS & ENTREPRENEURS – MHI RJ is the leader in aviation maintenance for the CRJ Series, the world's most successful regional jet. With more than 550 employees in West Virginia and state-of-the-art hangars in Bridgeport, West Virginia, MHI RJ supports the top three airlines in the US and top regional airlines in the world. Innovators and Entrepreneurs chats with Ross Mitchell, Vice-President of MHI RJ Aviation Global, and Michael Genin, Director of Operations for MHI RJ Aviation in Bridgeport, about their company's success in #YesWV. MHI RJ in Bridgeport is currently hiring about 400 technicians and is looking to fill over 100 job vacancies over the next year. This week, we go into great detail about the life cycle of caddisflies and the various species found in the eastern United States. Tom Ames [33:05], author of the book Caddisflies is my guest and although we go into great detail on the various types of caddisflies, don't let it overwhelm you, as imitating these insects is merely a matter of observing what stage of their life cycle is present and what the trout are eating. It's not something you can predict in advance—you need to arrive at the river and then figure out the puzzle by your powers of observation. But this podcast does get geeky so be prepared! Our Fly Box questions this week are much more basic, a good counterbalance to our discussion of caddisflies. Questions and tips include: I want to go beyond my typical attractor patterns and match some hatches. What basic flies do you recommend? A great tip from a listener on fixing rough fingertips for fly tying Tom's thoughts on the Murdich Minnow fly What three lines should I get for fishing lakes? Why don't more people wear PFDs? What color of Clouser Minnows should I get for smallmouth bass? Can I tie my second Euro nymph fly onto the bend of the other fly, or can I leave a tag end long on the knot to the first fly and use that? Several rod selection questions Can I double haul with my bamboo fly rod? Is it a good idea to pinch the line against the cork to put added pressure on a running fish? Tips from a listener on wearing felt boots on a trail and drying out wading boots. What rod is best for practicing my casting skills?
In Session 206, I spoke with Dr. Melissa Gonzalez, BCBA-D, about Pediatric Feeding Disorders, and what Applied Behavior Analysis can offer in this area. Melissa is the Clinical Therapy Director at the Siskin Children's Institute in Chattanooga, Tennessee, arriving there by way of Louisiana State University's Clinical Psychology program and the Kennedy Krieger Institute, amongst other waypoints. In this episode, we discussed how she got into working with individuals with Pediatric Feeding Disorders, what are the diagnostic criteria for this repertoire, what we know what works for PDFs, the difference between picky eaters and individuals with PFDs, the importance of taking a multidisciplinary approach to treatment, and much more! This is a topic I'm not terribly familiar with, so I learned a ton. If you have the same reaction to this podcast, please share it with friends and colleagues! Hey, I'm not sure if you've noticed, but there are SO MANY awesome outdoor resources available to us here in New England. Have you ever stopped to wonder how those amazingly mapped and maintained trail networks or hut systems or water access points come to be?Probably no surprise, there are a LOT of people and organizations hustling in the background, because big projects like those usually require a LOT of cooperation and alignment on a lot of fronts. For every great trail system you enjoy, there are probably 100 that never left the drafting table. It's not too difficult to recognize the beauty and potential when you're looking out from a mountain top or over a pristine lake or dramatic oceanfront cliff. But what about the turn of the century mill towns scattered across the state that used to harness Maine's countless rivers for manufacturing power? When buildings and dams and ugly fences and parking lots are crowding your urban center's waterfront, do you have any options?Today's guest says Heck YES! I'm stoked to welcome Kristina Cannon, Executive Director of Main Street Skowhegan to the pod today.I found Main Street Skowhegan after I saw some kind of social media post about a whitewater park that was going to be built on the Kennebec River in Maine and went down a Google rabbit hole (as one does). I had a mental picture of kayak racks and PFDs piled up in a dirt parking lot in some rural location along the river, but heck no - it's going to be right smack dab in the middle of downtown Skowhegan! The Skowhegan Riverpark Project is just one of about a zillion cool things that Main Street Skowhegan is working on, with Kristina at the helm, so I'm going to let her tell you all about it and get you stoked for your own Skowhegan Staycation. We just missed the craft brew fest, but there are plenty more reasons to visit Skowhegan coming up, head over to VisitSkowhegan.com or check out @visitskowhegan on Instagram and Facebook for all the details on upcoming festivals and events. Better yet, when you decide that Skowhegan sounds like a pretty cool place to take your remote work - where you can run some rapids in the morning, run your financials an hour later and be running out for locally sourced wood-fired pizza at lunch - go to Main Street Skowhegan or Skowhegan Entrepreneurship to find out how easy it will be to make those dreams your reality!More links from our conversation:Abby Bennett, Mahoosuc Land TrustJen Klein, Trustees of ReservationsWhat is a 'design charette'? This episode revisits a conversation with Tom Rooks, the Director of Rowing at Williamsburg Boat Club, in Williamsburg, VA. When we talked with him back in 2021, we loved how authentic he was. From his "fun first" mantra to how he prepares his juniors athletes to be better humans beyond the boathouse. Tom was one of our favorite guests - sharing his philosophies about saving lives, being well-rounded, and finding your calling. Since then, Tom's been hired by USRowing as its Health and Well-Being Associate. This title doesn't do justice to the work he's doing there, ensuring that our NGB, local clubs, and regattas have procedures in place to keep athletes, coaches, officials, and volunteers safe - from PFDs to hydration tablets, safety education, and emergency plans. This remix includes a new intro, with banter between hosts Rachel Freedman and Tara Morgan about Tom, safety, and USRowing Masters Nationals in Sarasota, FL. TIME STAMPS 0:00 - Lead-in 03:55 - Intro 09:29 - Rowing week 10:35 - Team culture and coaching philosophy; and rowing origin story 19:50 - Rowing is all in the family, the importance of a well-rounded life 28:00 - Quintessential Tom and wearing your heart on your sleeve 34:10 - Mentoring new coaches 38:35 - What you're capable of today, vulnerability, resiliency 41:25 - How COVID taught WBC kids their “why” 44:10 - Taking his competitive drive to Disc Golf 47:45 - Choosing to row and having dominion over it 50:20 - Handling anxiety and expectations by visualizing “rear view” moments 55:50 - Memorable lessons from Tom's high school rowing coach 58:50 - How rowing helped Tom and his wife make it through physical challenges 1:01:18 - Risk management, safety plan development, mishap analysis 1:08:08- Rapid Fire Q&A . Caitlin Shortell was born and raised in Anchorage. She returned home after earning her law degree at Northeastern University in Boston and worked as an Assistant Public Defender at the Alaska Public Defender Agency (2003); as an Assistant Attorney General at the Alaska Attorney General's Office (2004-2008); and as Human Rights Advocate at the Alaska State Commission for Human Rights (2008-2009). Ms. Shortell, along with two other attorneys, was plaintiff's counsel in Hamby v. Parnell (2014), the case that secured same sex couples the right to marry in Alaska. Five years after winning the lawsuit that secured equal marriage, Ms. Shortell sued to stop the State of Alaska from a discriminatory practice of denial of PFDs to same sex military spouses and kids stationed out of State in Smith v. Dunleavy (2020). We talk about all of that and the potential undoing of landmark supreme court precedents on today's episode.
Gov. Mike Dunleavy says the state can save money while giving larger PFDs. Staff prepare to ship Congressman Don Young's hunting trophies from D.C. to Alaska. And how a church in Juneau became the city's emergency cold weather shelter.
