In 2019, the USWNT was attempting to make history as the first women's national team to win back-to-back World Cup titles. Jill Ellis was still at the help and had overseen some turnover from the roster that won the 2015 World Cup -- in fact, about half the roster was different. Despite that, the team still has some of it's most prominent stars, including Megan Rapinoe. A combination of youth and Rapinoe dominance propelled the team to the top of the podium. And she did that while still maintaining her stance on off-field issues. JP Dellacamera has broadcast 17 World Cups, making him the voice of soccer for many Americans. He returned to the show to recount the USWNT's journey through the 2019 Women's World Cup. During our conversation, Dellacamera recounts key moments in the tournament. He talks about the significance of Rapinoe's performance and more. Founding Futbol is a year-long exploration of the critical moments that have led to soccer's emerging popularity in America. When ESPN began broadcasting in 1979, no one knew if a 24-hour sports cable station would work. The concept was new. The format was new. And there was no data to suggest the American public would watch.  But ESPN not only worked, it changed the sports culture globally by giving airtime to sports that previously went unbroadcast and by creating a highlight culture. Soccer benefited from these factors – as ESPN broadcast the Major Indoor Soccer League, bringing fans to the game in new and interesting ways. It also gave sports fans distilled key moments from various soccer matches exposing more people to the beautiful game.   JP Dellacamera has broadcast 17 World Cups, making him the voice of soccer for many Americans. He joined the show to discuss the start of his career at ESPN and how the game has evolved with the cable sports networks over the decades. We have the privilege of having JP Dellacamera on the podcast. JP has been a large voice in American soccer broadcasting for decades. He's called games on the biggest stages. From the 1986 World Cup, to the infamous 1999 Women's World Cup, all the way up to 2022 in Qatar. JP got his start in soccer through an opportunity with the Pittsburgh Spirit of Major Indoor Soccer League. JP joined us on the podcast to talk about the glory days of indoor soccer in the 1980s. We also dive into the current state of the Major Arena Soccer League, of which JP serves as the President of Communications/Media for the league. Then I couldn't help myself and had to ask a few World Cup questions...

[We near the end of our Thanksgiving leftovers this week with a June 2018 archive re-release favorite featuring US Soccer Hall of Fame broadcaster JP Dellacamera - currently in Qatar covering this year's FIFA World Cup for Fox Sports!] Fox Sports soccer play-by-play broadcaster extraordinaire JP Dellacamera joins the podcast this week to discuss a pioneering career in sports announcing spanning over 30 years – including calling this year's 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia – his ninth consecutive men's quadrennial assignment since Mexico '86. Widely acknowledged as the original voice of US Soccer, Dellacamera's calls have become synonymous with some of modern-day American soccer's most indelible moments – including his accounts of the US Women's National Team's dramatic penalty kick shootout victory over China in the 1999 FIFA Women's World Cup, and Paul Caligiuri's historic “Shot Heard ‘Round the World” against Trinidad & Tobago in the final game of 1989 CONCACAF qualifying that punched the US Men's National Team's ticket for Italy '90 – ending a 40-year World Cup finals drought, and reorienting the sport's trajectory in the ‘States for decades to come. The road to broadcasting global soccer's marquee events has by no means been a straight and narrow one, however, and we (of course) chat with Dellacamera about some of the more memorable “forgotten” stops made along the way, including: Talking his way into his professional debut calling local TV games for the 1978 NASL expansion Detroit Express; Handling radio play-by-play for the American Soccer League's ALPO dog food-sponsored Pennsylvania Stoners; Parlaying years of minor league hockey broadcast experience into lead announcing duties for indoor soccer's Pittsburgh Spirit of the fledgling MISL; Cementing his stature as the voice of US women's soccer as the play-by-play lead for the 2001 launch of the WUSA; and  Returning to his first love of pro hockey – finally at the NHL level – with the short-lived Atlanta Thrashers.

Putting the ball up in the air... should be do it, or should we keep it on the ground? Choosing what to train in youth soccer and when to train it is a combination of science and art. US Youth Soccer gives us some useful guidelines, but how closely we follow those guidelines requires a look at individual players, team strategy, club strategy, and even individual coaching philosophy. Let's explore the vertical game in soccer!  Why Talk About This? This episode is dedicated to coach Rick Watts and the excellent coaches of the Saint Mary's Soccer Club in Maryland. Rick is a listener and member of our Soccer Sidelines community. He's also the VP for Recreational Soccer at Saint Mary's. He sent me a question last week  - Thanks, Rick! - along with an email exchange between he and a few of his coaches. They were exploring the vertical game, when to use it, if they should use it, etc.  In this exchange, coach Dave, one of Rick's coaches - presumably from his recreation program - asks "(I) Want to clarify a rule with you for U8 girls. It was my understanding that we are supposed to keep the ball on the ground due to the shortness of the field we play on. We played a team last week that kicked in the air the majority of the time. I mentioned it to the coach and his response was that's how soccer is played. I just want to make sure of the rule so I can teach my girls the right way to play." "(I) Want to clarify a rule with you for U8 girls. It was my understanding that we are supposed to keep the ball on the ground due to the shortness of the field we play on. We played a team last week that kicked in the air the majority of the time. I mentioned it to the coach and his response was that's how soccer is played. I just want to make sure of the rule so I can teach my girls the right way to play.” Rick's response to Dave reflected his experience and some very specific statistics he's been keeping on the game. He asked for my thoughts on the subject and suggested that this might make a good subject for a podcast.  Well, first, thank you Rick for sharing this idea! I agree that this makes a good subject for the show, and I think this is a great question to help illustrate some important principles of a developmental style of coaching - as well as give us some insight into how we think about what we teach.  What is The Vertical Game in Soccer? Put simply, we're talking about putting the ball into the air. This could be a long punt from the goalkeeper, a chipped pass over the heads of pressuring defenders, a high diagonal long pass over a group of players, or a high cross from the wing or as a corner kick into the box.  Big Punts or "goal kicks" from the goalkeeper Chipped or Lofted Pass Lofted Cross to Change AOA The above illustrations show a few examples of the vertical game in soccer. There are many variations to this, of course, but the simple explanation of the vertical game is that the ball is played in the air as part of the game tactics. The objective may be to change the angle of attack, move the ball into space behind a pressuring opponent, or maybe to give teammates an opportunity to score. The opposite of the vertical game would be playing the ball on the ground.  The vertical game in soccer has a well known effect on the game and individual team strategies. In the February 27, 2019 match between the US and Japan in the She Believes Cup, Ali Wagner was chatting with JP Dellacamera about the vertical game as being one of the strengths of the US Women's National team.  The US Women's National team demonstrates one positive example of the vertical game being employed in a meaningful and productive way.  Ali Wagner and JP Dellacamera from Fox Sports One Should We Play a Vertical Game or Not? The discussion that Rick and his coaches are having is whether or not to play a vertical game. One coach, Dave, was saying that he thought the club policy was to use the "buildup lines" and play out from the back - primarily ...

Fox Sports soccer play-by-play broadcaster extraordinaire JP Dellacamera joins the podcast this week to discuss a pioneering career in sports announcing spanning over 30 years – including calling this year’s 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia – his ninth consecutive men’s quadrennial assignment since Mexico ’86. Widely acknowledged as the original voice of US Soccer, Dellacamera’s calls have become synonymous with some of modern-day American soccer’s most indelible moments – including his accounts of the US Women’s National Team’s dramatic penalty kick shootout victory over China in the 1999 FIFA Women’s World Cup, and Paul Caligiuri’s historic “Shot Heard ‘Round the World” against Trinidad & Tobago in the final game of 1989 CONCACAF qualifying that punched the US Men’s National Team’s ticket for Italy ’90 – ending a 40-year World Cup finals drought, and reorienting the sport’s trajectory in the ‘States for decades to come. The road to broadcasting global soccer’s marquee events has by no means been a straight and narrow one, however, and we (of course) chat with Dellacamera about some of the more memorable “forgotten” stops made along the way, including: Talking his way into his professional debut calling local TV games for the 1978 NASL expansion Detroit Express; Handling radio play-by-play for the American Soccer League’s ALPO dog food-sponsored Pennsylvania Stoners; Parlaying years of minor league hockey broadcast experience into lead announcing duties for indoor soccer’s Pittsburgh Spirit of the fledgling MISL; Cementing his stature as the voice of US women’s soccer as the play-by-play lead for the 2001 launch of the WUSA; and Returning to his first love of pro hockey – finally at the NHL level – with the short-lived Atlanta   Our sponsors for this week include: Audible, Podfy and SportsHistoryCollectibles.com.

JP Dellacamera has been in the broadcast booth for 13 World Cups (men's and women's) and countless other iconic moments in American and world soccer lore, so it's no surprise that he has some fantastic stories to tell. Dellacamera does just that with SI's Grant Wahl on the new Planet Fútbol Podcast. What are the top moments of his broadcasting career? What does he think about "authentic" being the word used to describe foreign announcers calling the game on U.S. broadcasts? Dellacamera, known affectionately by many as simply "The Legend," talks about that and much more in an entertaining, lengthy discussion. -- Audibles is brought to you by FreshBooks.
