A month after the ruling, Mario Monteiro – the man the law was named for – was released. He faced two life sentences as a 17-year-old, and served 23 years in prison. SB5462: LGBTQ instructional material in public school has passed the Senate, now on to the House. This will also make it so parents CAN NOT opt their kids out of this instruction! SB5964: Eliminates fine for juvenile offenders. In the States ever present quest to have no consequences whatsoever for any crimes they have decided its a good idea to remove all the financial consequences for fines committed by juveniles! Once again showing that they are more concerned with criminal well being than victims! SB5843: Secretary of State can certify election results if the county refuses to do so. Yes thats right if the state decides the county does not have "cause" whatever that may be, they can certify election results without county approval. The State ultimately wants to control everything here. Truly communist. SB5890: People who forget to sign their ballots. This would require the county auditor to call or email any voter who forgets to sign their ballot or their signature doesn't match, and explain to them how voting works and rectify the ballot. They would have 5 days to fix it. Can you imagine the work load this will create and what will it do to time frame for election results? SB6157: DACA recipients can apply for civil service positions like firefighting, law enforcement and corrections. They can also have up to 15% added to their test scores! Forget about WA State citizens who need these jobs! This episode is presented by Carolina Readiness Supply – From WBTV: The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department presented its 2023 crime stats during a news briefing on Thursday morning. Over the past year, the department said overall crime across the city increased by 14%. Police said that rise is largely due to a 17% increase in property crime. Violent crime was stagnant, staying flat from year-to-year. CMPD said 95 people lost their lives in homicides in 2023, down roughly 11% from the year before when there were 110 homicides. Of the 95 homicides this past year, eight cases are under review and could be removed from the final count. The department said 80% of homicides it responded to have been solved, far above the national average of 52%. Police said shootings rose by 7% from 2022 to 2023, contributing to a 3% increase in aggravated assaults. Throughout the year, more than 3,400 guns were seized by officers. A trend that saw a major increase in 2023 was the amount of juveniles arrested. Police said more than 3,000 juveniles were arrested throughout the year, with 108 juveniles being suspects in shootings. Please note: Google Podcasts are merging into YouTube Music. See details here. Since 2020, the number of juveniles connected to crimes in North Carolina is up by 19 percent. A juvenile offender is anyone 17 or younger. And some of those accused are as young as 10. This has led to an overcrowding problem in youth detention facilities. It’s also leading many people to ask why younger offenders seem to be committing crimes at a higher rate. WRAL Investigates’ reporter Sarah Krueger joins us in this episode to share what’s she learned about this growing crisis.
John MacKenzie chats with Dr. Terry Goldsworthy, Associate Professor in Criminology at Bond University, about policing recidivism and young repeat offenders. Recent data has revealed shocking figures as high as 90% of juveniles at the Cleveland Youth Detention Centre commit another crime within 12 months of being released. Dr. Goldsworthy commented on the changes that may be required in upper positions of government and the policing force in Queensland.

Should we be imprisoning children as young as 10 in South Australia? In this week's episode, we explore alternatives to detention for children who come in contact with the justice system. A campaign to raise the minimum age of criminal responsibility to 14 is gaining traction – but there's been a recent backlash from Police questioning how that will work. To explain what they believe needs to happen to keep kids out of detention, we're joined in this week's episode by Cheryl Axleby – co-chair of Change the Record – the national campaign to raise the age of criminal responsibility, and Ross Womersley – CEO of SACOSS – who's supporting the push. There is a sentencing reform campaign for long term offenders here in New Jersey. It's happening nationwide. The Criminal Justice System scrutinizes juveniles and Young adult offenders. Laurence Steinberg has conducted extensive studies that were relied upon by the United States supreme court. So far as it relates to how courts should sentence juveniles and young adult offenders. It is long past due for us to take a closer look at these sentencing schemes, mandatory minimums, and no early release acts that play a major role in the perpetuation of mass incarceration, nationwide and specifically right here in new jersey.
Do you believe juvenile offenders should be treated as adults? What if you knew the part of their brain that regulates impulses does not fully develop until roughly 25? Does that change things? This week on The Balanced Voice Podcast, we sit down with Dr. Elizabeth Cauffman, Professor at the University of California Irvine, whose research is vital to the conversation surrounding the rights and treatment of juvenile offenders.Dr. Cauffman's research addresses the intersect between adolescent development and juvenile justice. She has published over 100 articles, chapters, and books on topics in the study of contemporary adolescence, adolescent brain development, risk-taking and decision-making, parent-adolescent relationships, and juvenile justice. As a mother herself, Dr. Cauffman approaches conversations about these incredibly challenging topics with clarity and compassion. In today's balanced conversation we ultimately answer THIS question: Can juvenile offenders stop offending and become healthy members of society? ---The visual episode premieres Wednesday, April 28 at 10am on our Facebook page. Today we are speaking to another unicorn... a Black male, and this one actually endorses psychotherapy when one is hurting and needing to find their way. Our Guest Mr. B Lee is an educator in every sense of the word. He teaches high schoolers Government and Theatre. He also teaches and mentors his students on life, especially since some of them are Juvenile Offenders, who have had issues with the system due in part to gaps in their education and care. After losing multiple family members in a short time span, he went through the tunnel of darkness and loss but eventually came out on the other side with a firm resolve to continue life's work in molding our teens. He is a truly remarkable man, who gives props to his father as the person who not only molded him but also molded others. He admits that life is still a daily struggle, but he uses the arts to find the motivation to explore his feelings and carry on. He focuses his life on "where the rubber meets the road", because in his words, "the children want someone with a listening ear".
