Summary: Add some Seoul to your day and join Holly and Devin in South Korea for today's Summer Jetset Series episode! While neither of them have made it to Korea yet, they have both fallen in love with the country, the culture, the vibrancy and K-Pop. They appreciate the country for its massive pop-cultural influence in both music with KPop, KDramas and K-beauty trends and fashion - it's exciting to see South Korea stepping more and more onto the global stage. Until you can book your tickets, come armchair travel with us!  Topics Discussed: The Heart (2:51): Devin discussed XOXO by Axie Oh, a delightful YA novel that follows cellist Jenny as she travels from her home in LA to Seoul and the Seoul Arts Academy for a semester to help her mother care for her ailing grandmother. Once there, Jenny realizes that the mysterious hunk she connected with one random night in LA is actually Jaewoo, star of an up-and-coming K-Pop group. Devin's key takeaways were: Whether you're a huge K-Pop fan or new to the scene, this book provides a fantastic overview of the K-Pop experience, both for the fandom and for the group members themselves. Oh executes with wonderful accuracy on the excitement and struggles of Jaewoo and his groupmates.  Unlike most Hallmark movies, XOXO doesn't involve Jenny giving up her own dreams and goals for the sake of Jaewoo; she continues to explore what her cello career and future studies mean to her and her growth is not exclusively driven by her romance; a refreshing and important perspective for all readers. The side characters of this novel are phenomenal, well-rounded, and provide a pop of color and texture to the main plotline of a forbidden love between Jenny and Jaewoo.  The Dagger (16:47): Holly discussed The Plotters by Un-Su Kim, a contemporary novel that delves into the secretive world of assassins. The reader follows Reseng, a contract killer who was raised by the head of an underground organization, Old Racoon. The tensions between old guard leaders like Old Racoon and new blood portrayed by Hanja add layers of intrigue on top of an already compelling assassin story. Holly's key takeaways were: Don't judge a book by it's assassin plot! This novel is introspective and explores the theme of personal identity and the search for meaning in life. Reseng grapples with questions about his own identity as he begins to recognize that his life has been controlled by external forces who have been pulling the strings behind the scenes.  The Plotters raises ethical questions about the nature of killing and the moral implications of assassination while weaving in some seriously intense action scenes. As is the case with 21st-century Korean crime films, this novel relies heavily on sharp and pointy objects that get deadly - principally, knives and hatchets.  As we follow Renseng on his journey, Kim explores the complexities of loyalty and betrayal within his sphere of assassins and underground groups. It raises questions about trust, the nature of relationships, and the lengths to which individuals will go to protect their own interests.  Hot On the Shelf (33:13): Devin: The Fiancé Farce by Alexandria Bellefleur Holly: The Whispers by Ashley Audrain What's Making Our Hearts Race (36:42): Devin: The Nowhere Bookshop in San Antonio, TX (owned by Jenny Lawson!) Holly: Past Lives, a film in theaters!    Instagram: @heartsanddaggerspod Website: www.heartsanddaggerspod.com   If you like what you hear, please tell your friends and rate and review us on Apple Podcasts and Spotify so that we can find our perfect audience.

Have you ever pondered the letter P, or maybe reflected on the letter R? As in, thought about their structures, their shapes, and how they came to be. I, to be honest, had not. I have never given these letters—or any other letters—much thought. But that's what we're up to today. In this episode, we're looking across the world's hundred plus scripts and asking some basic questions: How are they alike? How do they differ? And why do they have the shapes that they do? My guests are Dr. Yoolim Kim and Dr. Olivier Morin. Yoolim is a Psycholinguist at the Korea Institute at Harvard University, and Olivier is director of the Minds and Traditions research group (aka ‘The Mint') at the Max Planck Institute for the Science of Human History in Jena, Germany. Olivier and Yoolim, along with other colleagues, have recently launched a new online game called Glyph. You can play right now. It asks players to help describe, break down, and classify the characters of dozens of writing systems around the world.   Here, we talk about Glyph and what Yoolim and Olivier hope to learn from it. We do a bit of ‘Writing Systems 101' and shine a spotlight on two scripts with fascinating origin stories: Hangul, the Korean script which was devised in the 15th century and Vai, a script invented in Liberia in the 19th century. We also talk about how universal cognitive factors shape writing systems and about whether the writing system you use shapes how you think. Finally, we discuss the earliest writing systems and what they were used for; the myth that the alphabet is the most advanced type of writing system; and the understudied—but not uncommon!—phenomenon of “biscriptalism.” If you enjoy this episode, be sure to check out Glyph. It sounds super fun and engrossing—and I'll definitely be playing it myself! On to my conversation with Dr. Yoolim Kim and Dr. Olivier Morin. Enjoy!   A transcript of this episode will be available soon!   Notes and links 2:30 – You can sign up to play Glyph and watch a video about the game here. 6:30 – The International Phonetic Alphabet or IPA. 10:00 – In addition to writing, Dr. Morin's group at the MPI has also studied coin designs and other aspects of visual culture. 16:30 – A paper by Dr. Morin and colleagues about writing as one of many kinds of “graphic codes.” 18:40 – An explanation of the international laundry symbols. 19:50 – A video about how Egyptian hieroglyphs were decoded. We did a deep dive into first gen K-Pop, learning about H.O.T. and Seo Taiji and Boys. We also asked the three Sunbaes how they got into K-Pop in the first place. If you're K-Pop curious or just want to dip your toes into the shallow end of the K-Pop swimming pool, this is the perfect podcast for you. It's a great chat packed with loads of interesting facts, and a few laughs too! Kevin's Correction: Seoul Stache: Why is everyone sitting on the floor? I (incorrectly) came to the conclusion during the episode that ‘ondol' (온돌) meant ‘hot stone' heating. I was correct with ‘on' (온/溫) meaning ‘hot', but I forgot that ‘dol' (돌), while meaning ‘stone', is native Korean, while the ‘stone', 'on'(온/突) is Hanja meaning either ‘sudden' or ‘protruding', likely depending on context (and I'm far from a Hanja expert so really don't know). Either way, I was incorrect in my initial assumption.Intro/Outro Music: Eaters, song Tuck's Love Party (eatersmusic2000) https://freemusicarchive.org/music/eaters/an-evening-with-tuck-pendleton/tucks-love-partyhttps://freemusicarchive.org/music/eaters/wives/i-an-not-edibleEmail: podcast@theseoulpatch.comInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/theseoulpatchpodcast/Twitter: https://twitter.com/patch_seoulFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/theseoulpatchWebsite: http://theseoulpatch.com
