SUMMARY: In this episode we talk with Jon Harris about how Christians should view and study history. We explore how conservatives should defend against the left without compromising the truths of history. We also talk about the idea that our assumptions about the future dictate what we will find in the past. Jon clarifies some false assumptions on our part and offers hope to people who have been told that they must feel guilt over sins of past generations. GUEST INFORMATION: Jon is a committed Christian and enjoys outdoor sports and music. He repented of his sins and put his trust in the grace of Jesus Christ for full and immediate forgiveness as a child. When he's not hiking or playing guitar, Jon writes about political and theological issues confronting the church. He has an MDiv from Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary and an M.A. in History from Liberty University. He was interested in political theory from a young age but sensed a stronger desire for ministry. During his college years Jon worked in campus ministry and also served as a minister of music at his church. Jon's Podcast: Conversations that Matter Jon's Website: Worldview Conversations Documentary Work: Last Stand Studios QUESTIONS THIS EPISODE ASKS: In his lectures on American history, Steve Wilkins says that secular scholars cannot study history accurately because when they come across figures and events that display the glory and truthfulness of God, they suppress that truth. David and Tim Barton call God's hand in history “the golden thread” in their book “The American Story, The Beginnings”. Could you talk about 1 or 2 “golden thread” moments that stand out to you? How can we tell the truth about history without giving up ground to the left and progressive Christians? What role does history play in the command to honor our father and mother? What is something practical that Christians can do in order to understand and teach history in a more ‘Christian' way? Should Christians feel guilt for past sins committed by previous generations? We also need to change the way we think about money from a frugal mindset to a building mindset.. RECOMMENDED RESOURCES: The King's Hall: Wealth, Money, Space GUEST INFORMATION: Eric's career spans almost 20 years in sales and management. He has held roles such as sales rep, sales trainer, regional manager, area director of sales, and strategic account manager. SUMMARY: Most companies are not Christian companies. This creates questions and opportunities for Christians who work in those companies. This episode explores how Christians can honor their bosses, how to think through a company that promotes ungodly causes, and also concludes with a bonus discussion on whether college athletes should be paid.. GUEST INFORMATION: Eric's career spans almost 20 years in sales and management. He has held roles such as sales rep, sales trainer, regional manager, area director of sales, and strategic account manager. He started off working for GANZ USA, a giftware company based out of Atlanta GA. After ten successful years there, He transitioned to working for a Medical Device company named Stryker in 2012 as a Patient Care Account Manager. In 2016, Eric was promoted to Northwest Regional Manager, and developed key IDN relationships, and built a team of sales people to cover 5 states. QUESTIONS THIS EPISODE ASKS: How do business minded Christians engage in this corporate world? What advice would you give to Christians who are specifically in leadership in a secular company? As someone who is involved in business leadership, what advice would you give to Christians if their company is embracing worldly philosophies (such as promoting the LGBTQ agenda at work), but it is not directly affecting that Christian's job? It has simply become part of the corporate ethos, and something that the company wants to associate itself with publicly? Several high-profile companies have recently embraced wokeness in a big way. Disney is probably the most prominent. But several other companies have tried that and it has led them to back away from from the woke and progressive mob (an example is Netflix). Do you think that companies should be involved in social positions, political messaging, or things like this? What about Christian companies who want to be vocal about the gospel? Do you think that the business world is becoming increasingly hostile to the Christian worldview? What do you think it is about the "businessman" that has given him a bad reputation in society? Charles Dickens "A Christmas Carol" and many other fictional classics certainly portrayed truths about the ruthlessness of businessmen. Today I consider businessmen either slick talkers with charm and no depth or cut throat and almost sinister. BONUS: Should college athletes be paid and/or allowed to make money for their likeness? SUMMARY: This is our follow-up discussion from our interview with Levi Minderhoud. We discuss the principle that we can expand the kingdom of God by declaring his truth (the law) and his gospel in our own small areas of influence. This can include school districts, libraries, and towns. It is loving and honors God when we advocate for his truth and standards. As we do this, we partially carry out the mandate to subdue the earth. GUEST INFORMATION: Levi Minderhoud joined the staff of the Association for Reformed Political Action (ARPA) Canada in June of 2019 as ARPA's first British Columbia Manager. He is dedicated to raising the political activity and knowledge of Reformed Christians in British Columbia, bringing a Christian worldview to members of the British Columbia legislature, and developing public policy from a Christian perspective. Prior to joining ARPA on a full-time basis, Levi already had political and policy experience elsewhere. He has a bachelor's degree from Dordt University in political science, business, and economics and a Master's of Public Policy degree from Simon Fraser University. SUMMARY: Abraham Kuyper once pointed out that “Calvinism is an all-embracing system of principles... It is rooted in a form of religion which was peculiarly its own, and form that specific religious consciousness there was developed first a particular theology, then a special church-order, and then a given form for political and social life.” In this episode we talk with Levi Minderhoud about Christian political involvement and how Abraham Kuyper's thoughts ought to inform our efforts to bring God's principles into political life. Levi and his wife Jillian currently live in Abbotsford, British Columbia. You can find out more about his work at ARPA here: https://arpacanada.ca/ QUESTIONS THIS EPISODE ASKS: The church and the state should be separate, so only use logic and natural law when trying to make laws. Christians should not try to legislate morality. It is a fool's errand to try to influence policy and laws when only the gospel will change someone's heart. In other words, if laws and politics can only affect outward behavior, then isn't it better for Christians to focus on the gospel? Abraham Kuyper helped develop the idea of sphere sovereignty. He was a theologian, but at the same time, he founded a political party. One criticism of Kuyper's approach is that the political party that he established did not last (God's promises are to the church, not to political parties). What can we learn from Kuyper's view of Christianity and politics? Does God want Christians to be involved in politics and in making laws? Practically, we go about doing political engagement? We agree with almost everything he says. Should Christians partner with other conservatives in order to end abortion, even if those people do not share the same goal of entirely abolishing abortion? The process of the church teaching people how to live in society in a Christian way seems to have broken down. What is politics/the political process? How should Christians be involved in politics/the political process? You can find more information about this project on his youtube channel: https://youtube.com/channel/UCFWGZheEf-D-3TT5yeag-ig QUESTIONS THIS EPISODE ASKS: Here are the questions that we asked Kevin in this episode: What is a homestead? Why should Christians homestead or be working towards owning a homestead? Self-sufficiency is one of the key aspects of freedom. Christians should continuously strive towards independence from the systems that hold power over us. Food is certainly an aspect in which political persuasion and pressure could be used to drive people to do things God would condemn. What are some challenges of homesteading? Why is animal husbandry important? Where does the bible talk about homesteading/gardening? (Genesis 2:15) The LORD God took the man and put him in the garden of Eden to work it and keep it. (Jeremiah 29:5) Build houses and live in them; plant gardens and eat their produce. In Jeremiah the Israelites are exiled and forced to live in a land which is not their own. God tells them to continue to work towards the success of the cities of Babylon in which they reside. Being able to sustain life by growing their own food and working hard towards rebuilding their lives will What are some practical steps that people can take to start homesteading? Lydia is a follower of Christ, the wife to Burk, mother to four children, living in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. She fills her days educating her children, serving in her local church, co-hosting the All Things Bright and Beautiful podcast, occasionally writing for her blog, and managing her home in the hopes of making it a place of peace and welcome to all people, where the Gospel is naturally infused in dinner conversation. She can usually be found between stacks of books and half-filled coffee cups gone cold, hiking and catching bugs with her children, or playing board games with her husband. She has been greatly helped and influenced by Charlotte Mason, C.S. Lewis, Dietrich Bonhoeffer, Augustine, Elisabeth Elliot, and Alister McGrath. QUESTIONS THIS EPISODE ASKS: Here are the questions that we asked Lydia in this episode: Why is reading important for society and for Christians? What are some literary works that every American must read? This same principle is true within the Christian subculture. We gravitate towards the newest christian leader's book and seldom read the rich classics of the christian heritage. Why might this be and is it good or bad? In an age where most people primarily read articles online, and even then they only read a fraction of the entire article, why and how should we read literature? Why do you think that God gave stories and literature to us and also why did He use them in the Bible? What does literature and story tell us about who God has made us to be? We talk a lot about 'the narrative' today. How should Christians think about the stories they are absorbing through news, social media, etc? In the 1st episode of your podcast, All Things Bright and Beautiful you make several comparisons to exercise and reading. I feel like our culture is about 600 pounds overweight and we have no idea where to start. Could you talk about that a little bit and where should we start? 0ur culture has changed the definition of love. But people still respect the idea of love. This means that people still feel the weight of ‘love your neighbor' but no longer know what love is or how to do it. How does literature help us understand love and correctly define it? It will ask you to die on the implications of the doctrine -Example of James Coates and Gospel Coalition God's Law -Is it applicable to all? -2 step process looking @ how israel did it as an example -Moral Law has always been on our hearts Live a quiet and peaceful life -Connection to living within God's law. Because when we do what is good as God calls it, and when we live in society, how can they line up? It didn't for the Christians under persecution. But it can through prayer and work. -Pray for and work for the place where our obedience to God can exist in a society that is sufficiently aligned with God's standards. IMPLICATIONS -Bringing the law to society leads to evangelism. -Work to cultivate courage and steadfastness to God's commands into your friendships. GUEST INFORMATION: In this episode we interview pastor Joel Webbon of Covenant Bible Church about what postmillennialism is. You can check out Pastor Joel's preaching at https://covenantbible.org and you can fid information about his podcast at https://rightresponseministries.com. QUESTIONS THIS EPISODE ASKS: Here are the questions that we asked Jim in this episode: Do Christians need to engage culture directly? Is this at odds with 'live a quiet and peaceful life'? A lot of Christians think that this 'cultural engagement' is outside of their purvue. What do you say to the average Christian who says "society follows forces that are massive.”? Is God pleased when a society largely aligns itself with God's law, even if the people within that society don't love God? Isn't this a macro case of gaining the world but losing your soul? Does the taint of internal sin corrupt the product of the sinful hand? In this episode we discuss the first part of our interview with Joel Webbon. We talk about the Puritans' and Reformers' willingness to apply the Old Testament in a seemingly postmillennial way and we talk about a passage that makes us question Joel's claim that by the time Jesus returns the majority of the world will be saved. (Matthew 7:13-14) INTERVIEW INFORMATION In this episode we go back to our interview with Pastor Joel Webbon earlier this week. ISSUES THIS EPISODE ADDRESSES: Here are the topics that that we reflected on in this episode: What does Postmillennialism mean when it says that most of the world will be saved? How do reformed theologians interpret the Bible in a slightly different way than evangelical theologians? Does the church actually win, or do bad ideas simply eat themselves? We cover topics such as the difference between premillennialism and postmillennialism and what the role of the church is within each of these views. GUEST INFORMATION: In this episode we interview pastor Joel Webbon of Covenant Bible Church about what postmillennialism is. You can check out Pastor Joel's preaching at https://covenantbible.org and you can fid information about his podcast at https://rightresponseministries.com. QUESTIONS THIS EPISODE ASKS: Here are the questions that we asked Jim in this episode: What is the difference between premillennialism, postmillennialism, and amillennialism? Postmillennialism is a view of the end times that claims that Jesus will return once He has used the church to bring the kingdom of God to the whole world. The time during which the kingdom is growing and expanding is the millennium referred to in the books of Daniel and Revelation. Do Christians need to engage with culture? ISSUES THIS EPISODE ADDRESSES: Here are the topics that that we reflected on in this episode: Pastors must be aware of what is going on in society and must teach about these things as the Bible addresses them. We cannot define love based on how the person who receives the love interprets it. There is no neutrality. All societal and political issues either serve the kingdom of God or the kingdom of darkness. In a godly society pastors speak broadly about how ALL of life should be lived in submission to God. In a godly society pastors identify threats to God's creation order in all of society and lead the church to destroy them. Episode 102 - Cowards in the Church Can't Help Society NOTES: Society needs the influence of the church in order to be healthy. But the church has largely abandoned its duty and given in to cowardice. GUEST INFORMATION: In this episode Jim Osman joins us to talk about how the church should be involved in society. Jim is a pastor of Kootenai Community Church in Kootenai, Idaho. (http://www.kootenaichurch.org) He has written four books which can be found on his website (https://jimosman.com). QUESTIONS THIS EPISODE ASKS: Here are the questions that we asked Jim in this episode: In what ways is the gospel and the church under threat right now? Should pastors talk about current events from the pulpit? Should they talk about worldview issues (CRT, postmodernism, etc) from the pulpit? Why or why not? What do you understand "the sufficiency of scripture" to be. It seems like some Christians think that scripture is sufficient for our own personal holiness. Others view the Bible as sufficient to answer questions about societal questions such as economics, justice, principles of government, etc. Should Christians be looking to the Bible for guidance on these issues? You are hosting a conference on CRT coming up in the summer. Why is that important to you? How does it fit in the role of being a shepherd for your congregation? Our culture is very confused about the definition of love. Because love is universally recognized as a virtue, if the definition of it changes, it still retains its power to cause people to act in a ‘loving way'. How do you define love? Is it different than how society currently defines it? How do you know if you are loving someone? NOTES: “The church is losing its salt.” In this podcast we claim that the church is no longer exerting the influences of salt and light on western (specifically American) society. We kick off our first official episode of Rebuild by interviewing each other about why we aer doing this podcast and what we hope to accomplish. In short, we are doing this because we have become convinced that something has to be done. America has rejected God and is either approaching an inevitable collision with God's judgment, or we are nearing the last off ramp before we run out of road. We ask each other these riveting questions, guaranteed to delight and mystify you. What do you think we are doing here? How did you come to the point where you think that Christians, and the church, should work to bring the teachings of the Bible to bear on cultural, not just religious issues? 15 years ago, you were the resident college pastor at our church. What was the church doing right at the time that you think still holds value today? You are very good at talking with people and asking them questions. What do you think can be done to convince Christians that the Bible speaks to all aspects of life, and therefore that we must work to see God's principles worked out in all areas of society and culture? Why do you think Christians are reluctant or even think it's inappropriate to talk about what the Bible says about things like government and economics. What do you see as the biggest hindrance for the average church attending American to an appropriate engagement and interaction with this subject matter? Christians who are saying the things that we are saying are sometimes accused of running around like Chicken Little. Are we being alarmists? What is your process for seeking out answers to these questions we are asking and wrestling with? What is one thing that you would change about society? What would be 1 change churches/pastors could make that would make the biggest impact? Beyond The World And Man: Discussing Evolutionary Potential Through A Mystical Lens

For this episode of The Alchemical Mind, I look at the evolutionary potential of humanity through a mystical lens in response to some questions posed by a listener through a recent e-mail discussion. Bailey asked: 1. What are your thoughts on humanity being a stepping stone for the evolution of Artificial Intelligence? 2. Should we fear the potential of losing our humanity? 3. While I agree that individuals are not special, do you think humanity itself is special? 4. Is there a case for staying human forever (with technological augmentation) vs evolving into something new (AI/singularity)? 5. Do you think a simulation that we create to mimic fear and the unknown is a trap? I explore these questions by beginning our analysis through the eyes of Rudolph Steiner and anthroposophy since Steiner took a mystical perspective on these questions by introducing the concepts of the Lucifer/Christ/Ahriman archetypes to deal with the forces that have guided our philosophy through human evolution from the past to well into the future. I also deal with some of these questions from the perspective of Buddhism and Christianity, with a touch of vedantic and Zoroastrian cosmology. Be sure to subscribe. As we continue to explore the origins of myth and culture, let's take a look at the symbolism behind the deer and the stag. Sometimes referred to as the Sky Deer or Sun Deer, this animal is an integral part of shamanic traditions all across the world with close ties to both sun and moon worship, but also connected to the rituals of life, death, and resurrection and often marking the path to awakening or enlightenment in traditions as varied as Bon, Celt, Huichol, Scythian, and Shinto. Welcome to the first installment of Symbology 101, a series into which I dive deep into the symbols that create cultures and expand ideas. For this first installment, I dive deep into the sacred cow (and bull) and its importance within Indo-European civilization and how it has shaped our cultures, religions, and philosophies for millenia as the mother of all mythology. I dive into various aspects of the sacred cow in Hindu, Greek, Roman, Celtic and Germanic cultures, before heading to Persia to establish the symbolic link between astro-theology, history, and the influence of the Zoroastrian religion as we begin to dive into it over the next few episodes.
