Master These 7 People Skills to Become a Great Leader [093]

In this episode, I share 7 people skills you need to become a great manager or leader. Aspiring managers or leaders who show a high level of technical skill are often seen as competent enough to get promoted into senior levels. However, what often happens with these types of skill-based promotions is that while the individual has the technical skills necessary for the job, they often lack the people skills they need to manage and lead well. And this can lead them to underperform in their new position or for their boss to question whether they're the right person for the job. I created this episode to help you avoid this dilemma. Other podcast episodes I refer to:- EP073 How to Be Confident When You Lack Confidence in Your CapabilityCheck out Kara's YouTube channel which has 275K+ subscribers! One of the ways in which we can distinguish average leaders from great leaders is their ability to communicate. Their ability to explain complicated topics in a clear and articulate way. You might think that people who speak in an articulate way, were born like that. But as you'll discover in this episode, it's more likely that they've been trained - trained to speak in a way that is articulate and eloquent. Personally, it has been my lifelong mission to be more articulate when I speak. And through this journey, I've discovered a 3-step process that has helped me immensely to improve my communication. It's a process that anybody can put into action, even you. It's based on the concept that “our speech is a reflection of our thinking”. This means that in order for us to speak clearly, we need to ensure our thoughts are clear and structured first. Once your thoughts are clear in your mind, it will be much easier for you to communicate those thoughts in a clear and articulate way.If you've ever felt that you get your thoughts muddled, you don't make sense when you speak, or you can't express what is on your mind in a clear way, then this episode is for you! Being indecisive or sounding indecisive when you speak is a common hurdle for many emerging leaders. Most of the time, it's because you're waiting for approval, permission or you're fearful of saying the wrong thing. But when you sound indecisive when you speak, especially at work, it makes you look like you lack confidence in yourself - which in turn makes people question your capability at work. Sounding decisive when you speak is an important skill you must develop, and in this episode, you will learn how.I share with you the one major shift you need to make in your communication to sound more decisive (and this shift is extremely easy!). Then, I share with you two case studies so you can see the indecisive communication in action, understand what is wrong with it, and learn how to change it. You'll learn what you should say instead to sound more decisive. By the end of this episode, you will have a number of communication tools and sentences that you can use to sound more decisive at work, and ultimately, boost the level of confidence you convey to others.Resources Mentioned in this Episode:YouTube video, Sound More Decisive When You SpeakJuly 2022 Podcast episode, Speak Like a Leader in MeetingsLearning & Development Video Courses!Assertive Communication Skills MasterclassBusiness Etiquette 101: Social Skills for SuccessPowerful, Confident Body Language for WomenLeadership Presence 30 Day ChallengeBecome Known as a Go-To Expert!Download 21 ideas on How to Become Known as a Go-To Expert:   https://www.executive-impressions.com/gotoexpertseriesCheck out Shortform, the world's best book guides!Get 5 days of unlimited access to Shortform and an additional 20% discount on the annual subscription through my special link shortform.com/kararonin.Love the show? Can you stop people communicating aggressively with you? This was a question I received from one of my video course students. You may have come across this situation yourself. Perhaps you've asked yourself, “how to deal with aggressive communicators” or “how to stop people communicating aggressively”. Dealing with people who communicate aggressively with you is challenging, especially if you're coming from a passive style of communication. Rather than changing the other person's communication style (which is near impossible), a better strategy is to use assertive communication to guide them to communicate with you the way you want.Assertive communication is the best style of communication to use in both your personal and business life. It helps you set boundaries and communicate more openly and honestly to people around you. When you master assertive communication, you feel more empowered and in control of your life, and you can stop those aggressive communicators! In this podcast episode, I answer the question, “Can you stop people communicating aggressively with you?”.You will learn:The 4 different styles of communicationWhat commonly happens with aggressive communicators. How to use assertive communication to “train” people to communicate with you the way you want.A common mistake people make by accepting bad communication.Send Me Your QuestionsIf you would like to submit your own question for a future Q&A episode, please send an email to kara@executive-impressions.com. Resources Mentioned in this Episode:Assertive Communication Skills Masterclass Video Course that I mentioned in this episode.Episode 27: 5 Secrets to Having Difficult ConversationsEpisode 28: Why Do New Leaders Need to Be AssertiveEpisode 29: Use This Strategy to Delegate Assertively at WorkLearning & Development Video Courses!Assertive Communication Skills MasterclassBusiness Etiquette 101: Social Skills for SuccessPowerful, Confident Body Language for WomenLeadership Presence 30 Day ChallengeGet Your Leadership Evaluation Toolkit!Download the Leadership Evaluation Toolkit, a 35-question self-assessment on leadership:   http://www.executive-impressions.com/leadershipevaluationtoolkitLove the show? A common question when people start to set boundaries is: what happens when you set boundaries? How will other people react? Will they become aggressive with you? How should I respond? All of these questions are normal when you start to set boundaries. There are two difficulties you're up against when you set boundaries. First, you have to work up the courage to set boundaries with the other person. Second, you have to be prepared to protect those boundaries once you've set them. It's the “protection” aspect I address in this podcast episode.Protecting your boundaries once you've set them is incredibly important. People will try to push your boundaries. They will try to get you to change your mind and do what they want you to do. As a leader, it's very important that you are strong enough to protect your boundaries and not give in to other people's pressure.Setting boundaries in your professional or personal life can be challenging, but not impossible.
