According to The Economist, grandparents comprise 20% of the world's population. And it's estimated that about half are long distance grandparents who do not live in close proximity to their grandchildren. (And if you're not a long distance grandparent today, stay tuned - you could be someday). According to a study by AARP, while half of today's grandparents are long distance grandparents, it's on the rise. Kerry Byrne, PhD, founder of The Long Distance Grandparent, is on a mission to provide grandparents with the tools to build strong and meaningful relationships with their grandchildren. One is the sheer number of grandparents that we have. So The Economist just published a great article called The Age of the Grandparent has Arrived, and they had some fancy demographics. Look at how many grandparents we have in worldwide: there are 1.5 billion grandparents. There are over 70 million grandparents in America alone. I think the other stat that is very surprising to people is the age at which someone usually becomes a grandparent, because that's 50 for women, a touch older for men, but not much more. And the third one I would say is that around by the time someone hits 75, almost 90% of people are a grandparent. So this is a huge burgeoning group, with quite a long period of time to contribute and to be intentional in their grandparenting." On Play "And I think sticking to it is really important and being willing to try new things and be silly and playful. Play really builds trust. That's how we build relationships with grandchildren of all ages. So whether they are 2 or 22, don't be afraid to do something that's just a little bit silly to surprise and delight them in that connection. Send them a funny face selfie. A 22 year old grandchild will think that's really goofy, and a teenage grandchild might roll their eyes at that, but that's a connection point and that's how we connect with people, really all of our relationships are very much based in play." On Being a Grand Encouragement Officer "Grandparents are the GEOs of their family - and this is a Grand Encouragement Officer. We see this in the research that grandchildren who report emotionally close relationships, to their grandparents also report high levels of affectionate ...

Kerry Byrne, PhD, is a researcher, collaborator and entrepreneur in aging, care and connection. She is the Founder of The Long Distance Grandparent, a mission-driven business helping grandparents strengthen relationships with their grandchildren – no matter the distance between them. Dr. Byrne launched an online monthly membership program called The Long Distance Grandparent Society to support grandparents in their journey to create fun and meaningful moments with their grandchildren through intentional and purposeful grandparenting. It's the only program like it in the world and Kerry built it based on her 20-plus years experience as a research scientist in the area of aging and care. Kerry pivoted in her career, though she always had an interest in family caregiving and human connection as a professional focus. A serendipitous event moved her into the burgeoning field of gerontology. Kerry did consulting work for various companies, and was on a tenure track as a professor, before she launched her own business. Her impetus for starting The Long Distance Grandparent was driven, in part, by her living very far from her parents and wish to help them with their desire to know their grandchildren. In the U.S., she reports that more than half of grandparents live more than 200 miles from their grandchildren. Drawing on her personal and professional experience, Kerry helps improve intergenerational relationships within families, because these relationships impact everything from mental health to ending ageism. She shares practical, research-backed strategies through her blog, email newsletter, speaking engagements, membership program, and a few on this episode! For example, Kerry advises grandparents, grand-aunties and grand-uncles to "sweat the small stuff," i.e., remember the small details about your loved ones so they feel heard, known and special. These things can include sports, foods and any other interests. Kerry's membership group also receives ideas for virtual grand-dates, like art projects the grandchildren and grandparents can do together at the same time, virtually. Kerry is a mum to two little boys and all the grandparents in their lives are at a distance. She recently moved back home to Canada after living abroad (including in Dubai) for the last five years. The AFC and NFC Championship are just a few days away. Four teams remain and only two will advance for the privilege of competing for the Lombardi Trophy in Super Bowl XLVIII. The Patriots and Broncos start things off at 3:00 pm (est) in the AFC Championship and the 49ers and Seahawks will cap off Championship weekend on Sunday Night at 6:30 pm (est). Todd DeVries and Bill Enright host this special two hour Conference Championship preview episode of Football Nation and break down each of these should be classic match-ups. Todd and Bill play a game of “who has the edge” for each match-up in the following categories: Coach, Quarterback, Running Back, Wide Receiver, Tight End, Defense, and Special Teams. Kerry Byrne from ColdHardFootballFacts.com joins us to break down these games from a statistical standpoint. You can find Kerry’s Real and Spectatcular picks at ColdHardFootballFacts.com Insider.
For now, there’s 8 teams, 7 games, and just three more weeks of NFL action for the Season (let’s be honest no one cares about the Pro Bowl). This weekend’s games are an excellent combination of great offense vs. a great defense (Saints-Seahawks), defensive battles (49ers-Panthers), division rivalries (Chargers-Broncos), and a renewal of a legendary post-season rivalry (Colts-Patriots). That’s what makes the NFL Playoffs compelling, dramatic, and entertaining, these are the games we want to watch and these are the teams that we want to see. Adding a 7th seed to the playoffs would NOT make the Playoffs more compelling and yet that is seemingly the direction Roger Goodell and the NFL Owners are taking us toward. Much to Bill and Todd’s dismay, a 7th seed will make the playoffs in the not so distant future. Our two hosts discuss the Positive and (mostly) Negative aspects of bringing in an additional team to the post-season. Want to go to the Super Bowl but can’t afford tickets? Just sue the NFL. That’s what a New Jersey man decided to do after shelling out $4,000 for two Super Bowl Tickets. Our FN Legal expert, James DeStefano, joins us to discuss the Class Action lawsuit. And of course we get into game previews and predictions for the NFL Divisional Playoffs with some help from Kerry Byrne from ColdHardFootballFacts.com.
Every Fantasy Football manager had this weekend circled since back in August. Week 16. The Fantasy Football Championships. It’s finally here and we’re ready to help you win the cash, win the bragging rights, and win your trophy. Not only does your Fantasy Football team have major post-season implications this weekend but the actual NFL teams do as well. Todd DeVries and Bill Enright breakdown the full slate of playoff standings for both the AFC and NFC teams and review who needs to win, lose, or needs some help from others in order to make it into the playoffs. Speaking of playoff teams, Kerry Byrne from ColdHardFootballFacts.com, joins us to identify the weaknesses of the top playoff contenders. After all we know the Broncos have a prolific passing attack and the Seahawks have a dominant defense and run game, but what do those teams do poorly? Kerry joins us to discuss.
As we get closer to kickoff in Week 11 we breakdown the schedule for this weekend’s action. Unfortunately the first game of the week, Colts and Titans, isn’t exactly an exciting match-up. But luckily, the other two Primetime games will certainly live up to the billing. Chiefs and Broncos on Sunday night may be one of the best match-ups of the year. With Kansas City undefeated and Denver looking to get ahead of the Chiefs in the AFC Standings, there’s a lot on the line. Will Peyton Manning’s ankle injury become an issue. Is Dwayne Bowe’s arrest a distraction for KC? We answer those questions and give our predictions for the game. Plus for the first time in a long time, we’re treated to a great game on Monday Night Football. The red-hot Carolina Panthers host the New England Patriots who are coming off a bye. Carolina’s defense has suffocated opponents all season but did the bye week give Coach Belichick and Tom Brady plenty of time to figure out how to beat the ferocious felines? During the second hour of the show, Kerry Byrne from ColdHardFootballFacts.com joins us to discuss the Chiefs and Broncos game along with the Eagles and Redskins which should be a very high scoring affair. We want you to get in on the action at DraftKings.com in Week 11 where you can compete for over $500 in Cash Prizes. Todd and Bill reveal their Best Buy and Over Priced players for the Daily Fantasy Football contest. All that plus your Fantasy Football Lineup Questions for Week 11.
As we head into Week 7 of the NFL, our hosts reveal their NFL Power Rankings, both the Top 10 and Bottom 5 teams in the NFL. We both agree, the Jaguars, Giants, Vikings, and Buccaneers are the NFL’s worst teams in 2013. But Todd DeVries has a surprise for the Bottom 5 and that’s the Houston Texans AKA Pick 6 City. As for the Top 10, our hosts are once again in agreement. The Broncos, Seahawks, Patriots, Chiefs, and Saints are in the Top 5. But Bill believes the Lions and Chargers make the Top 10 while Todd think the Packers and Bears should make the cut. Fun debate and good analysis to start the show. Then the show really amps up it’s analysis with the Best Buy and Over Priced players for Week 7’s contest at DraftKings.com. You can get in on the action, compete against our hosts and other Football Nation and FFChamps.com members for just $10. We close out the show with Kerry Byrne from ColdHardFootballFacts.com who explains why the Texans are the DUMBEST team in the NFL and why the Chiefs, yes the Chiefs, and not the Broncos are the 2nd best team in the NFL behind the Seahawks.
Description: Week 4 of the NFL kicks-off with the 49ers and Rams and even though it’s a NFC West battle, we aren’t excited about the game from an Offensive or Fantasy Football perspective. As we do always on Football Nation we touch on the latest headlines and controversies from around the NFL and College Football, plus we help you prepare for your upcoming Fantasy Football Drafts. In this two-hour episode, Todd DeVries and Bill Enright discuss the DJ Swearinger hit on Dustin Keller, the fight between Richie Incognito and Antonio Smith and debate what is the dirtiest, most disgraceful play we’ve seen in the last ten years...here’s a hint, it was Albert Haynesworth. We also talk about the six game suspension to Denver’s linebacker, Von Miller, and discuss if it will affect the success of the Broncos. Kerry Byrne from ColdHardFootballFacts.com joins in on the debate and presents some interesting stats that display how important Miller is to the Broncos defense. Welcome to the 2nd episode of Football Nation, where football fans live. We discuss it all on our two-hour program: NFL, Fantasy Football, and College football. In this episode (8/15/2013) Todd DeVries and Bill Enright kick off the show with a rant about the insane media coverage surrounding the very minor Tom Brady knee injury, Robert Griffin III and Mike Shanahan's press conferences. Two very special guests joined the program. First was Kerry Byrne from ColdHardFootballFacts.com. When it comes to predicting winners of football games, no one does it better than Kerry, and it's all thanks to his incredible Quality Stats which are found at Cold Hard Insider. Our three insiders discuss the immediate reaction from Las Vegas to shut down Superbowl Prop Bets after learning about the Tom Brady injury and the gloomy outlook for the 2013 New York Jets and Mark Sanchez. Our second guest was Jenny from Fox Sports Girls who represents the Fox Sports Girls North team. Jenny and her group are driving across country to promote the launch of Fox Sports 1 and making some really cool sports themed stops along the way. She reveals her favorite moments from the trip, what we can expect from the Fox Sports 1 Channel (debuts August 17th), and why she desperately wants Adrian Peterson on her Fantasy Football team again in 2013. Todd and Bill wrap up the show talking about the latest headlines and controversy involving the reigning Heisman Trophy winner and Texas A&M starting QB, Johnny Manziel. Plus we reveal our Fantasy Football Busts at both the quarterback and running back position. Subscribe to our iTunes Channel for instant downloads to all our podcasts.
