Locked On Tar Heels - Daily Podcast On North Carolina Tar Heels Football & Basketball
With Hubert Davis at the controls of the North Carolina men's basketball team, three-point attempts and makes skyrocketed last season. That trend should undoubtedly continue moving forward, and not just at UNC but all over the nation. The 2021-22 season was quite prolific indeed from beyond the arc. Brady Manek (98) and Caleb Love (93) became the first Tar Heel teammates to each make at least 90 threes in a single season. Going a step further, Manek, Love, and RJ Davis (66) became the first Tar Heel trio to each make at least 60 threes in a single season. After that trio, though there was a precipitous drop-off down to Kerwin Walton's 23 threes. As a team, this was the sixth UNC team with 700-plus three point attempts, the fourth team with 800-plus attempts, and the first-ever team to attempt at least 900 threes (916 total). In a similar vein, this was the most three point makes by a Carolina team (328), and just the third time being north of 300 (2017-18 and 2018-19 being the other iterations).Going forward, the Tar Heels return 58.5% of their made threes from last season. There's a glaring hole left behind by Brady Manek that no one can completely step into.Caleb Love will need to replicate his downtown effort while RJ Davis hopefully can make a leap into the 90s as well. Additionally, the hope is that with more volume, Pete Nance can grow his career high 42 made threes last season up into the 60s.Can other players take a big step forward? Puff Johnson, Leaky Black, and D'Marco Dunn are prime candidates to help fill at least some part of the Brady Manek void. There is certainly a path to the Tar Heels making 300-plus threes again next season. This week's Tuesday Trivia question: Brady Manek and Caleb Love combined to make 191 three-pointers last season, the second-highest combined total for a pair of Tar Heel teammates. What pair had more? How many? And in what season? Locked On Tar Heels - Daily Podcast On North Carolina Tar Heels Football & Basketball
Hubert Davis' first team at UNC averaged 77.9 points per game, which would have been 12th amongst teams in the Roy Williams era. Armando Bacot led the way for the Tar Heels with 16.3 points per game. Three other Tar Heels averaged double-digit scoring, Caleb Love (15.9), Brady Manek (15.1), and RJ Davis (13.5). Carolina held a +6.6 scoring margin over their opponents, a mark that would have only bested three Roy Williams era teams – 2009-10, 2019-20, and 2020-21. The Heels return 71.2% of their scoring including four of their top five in terms of points scored last season. Along with Manek, the other players the Tar Heels will be without are transfers Dawson Garcia, Anthony Harris, and Kerwin Walton. Given the fact that five different players led the team in scoring and five different players had at least one 20-point game, this is a “pick your poison” type team that opposing defenses will have trouble game-planning for. Can Pete Nance step in and make up for Brady Manek's scoring production? Can any of the freshmen chip in buckets here and there? Will Leaky Black, Puff Johnson, or Dontrez Styles increase their scoring? Can the Tar Heels as a unit boost their scoring average north of 80? We'll find out soon enough! Locked On Tar Heels - Daily Podcast On North Carolina Tar Heels Football & Basketball
The 2021-22 North Carolina Tar Heels basketball team ushered in a new era as brand new head coach Hubert Davis took over the reins from three-time national champion Roy Williams. Along with Davis, the second-leading three-point shooter in NBA history, came a higher reliance upon the three-point shot. His first UNC team was led from beyond the arc by Brady Manek (40.3%), RJ Davis (36.7%), and Caleb Love (36.0%). As a team, Carolina, shot 35.8% while attempting the most threes by a team in program history (916). The Heels lose three of their top five three-point percentage shooters, including Manek, Kerwin Walton, and Dawson Garcia. Can Davis and Love build on what they accomplished last year? Can Pete Nance step in and once again shoot north of 40%? Will returners like Puff Johnson or D'Marco Dunn be able to find a more consistent shooting stroke? Will any of the freshmen contribute from beyond the arc? Locked On Tar Heels - Daily Podcast On North Carolina Tar Heels Football & Basketball
It's the sixth week of the summer preview for the 2022-23 North Carolina Tar Heels men's basketball roster. We have finished the freshmen (Seth Trimble, Jalen Washington, Tyler Nickel, Will Shaver) and the transfer (Pete Nance) and we now move to the first returning player: sophomore guard D'Marco Dunn. Dunn is a 6'4", 185-pound guard from Tucson, Arizona Dunn played sparingly in his freshman season for the Tar Heels, averaging 4.1 minutes per game. This year, with the departure of Kerwin Walton, and despite the addition of Seth Trimble, the backcourt doesn't have much depth. Dunn and Trimble will look to back up RJ Davis and Caleb Love. Dunn won't content for a starting spot – that will almost certainly be Davis, Love, Leaky Black, Nance, and Armando Bacot. However, Dunn will work hard to catch Coach Hubert Davis' eye with his shooting and defense, things that will get you (and keep you) on the floor. Host Isaac Schade and Pac Kilby take you through Dunn's game as well as expectations for the upcoming season. With the transfer portal top tier options committing relatively quickly, who are some options of players outside of our usual suspects. Taurus Samuels appears to be an option with an official visit set up with the Gophers later this week. Coach Ben Johnson also shows interest in Mikey Watkins. North Carolina has an open scholarship for the 2022-23 season and the big question becomes: Who will the Tar Heels get to help fill the Brady Manek-sized hole in the roster? The Carolina Coach K, Pac Kilby is back with us!North Carolina got back 4 of their 5 starters (Caleb Love, RJ Davis, Leaky Black, Armando Bacot), but we can't miss how big the hole is left by Brady Manek. Until this week there was no way to fill that gap outside of the roster. But then Kerwin Walton transferred and there's another scholarship available. The big question then becomes: HOW SHOULD CAROLINA USE THEIR OPEN SCHOLARSHIP?Coach Pac Kilby joins host Isaac Schade to discuss the answer to this question. Spoiler alert, we both think it will be a transfer. Here are the questions the Carolina Coach K will answer: What do the Tar Heels lose without Brady? When you analyze the roster, the needs, and the potential routes the staff could go: What do they need to look for in replacing him? North Carolina Tar Heels guard Kerwin Walton has entered the transfer portal. It's a move that many anticipated or saw coming, however with the immediate transfer opportunity deadline approaching it seemed that perhaps Walton would stay after all. Perhaps the thought of being part of another deep run was enticing for him. With many of his teammates coming back, including Caleb Love, RJ Davis, Leaky Black, and Armando Bacot, the opportunity to be part of a hugely successful team was right in front of him. However he decided to choose a different route, and one likely paved with more playing time. Best of luck, Kerwin. At the same time, Coach Hubert Davis must move ahead and make decisions about how best to utilize the final open scholarship. Host Isaac Schade posits many various possibilities, including one transfer who has already committed elsewhere. If Coach Davis doesn't find the player he wants in the transfer portal, he could certainly entertain some alternative options. North Carolina Tar Heels insider Candace Cooper reports that Armando Bacot, Leaky Black, RJ Davis, and Caleb Love will each return for one more year. Candace and host Isaac Schade unpack what the return means for bench players Puff Johnson, Dontrez Styles, Justin McKoy, D'Marco Dunn, and Kerwin Walton. Additionally, how does this move affect the four incoming freshmen (Will Shaver. Seth Trimble, Tyler Nickel, and Jalen Washington). How does this news affect Carolina's expectations next season, both from a team and individual standpoint? The team will have enormous expectations heaped on them. Individually, they will be expected to exhibit further growth and win multiple individual awards. Can reality live up to expectations? Similar to the 1982 and 2017 Tar Heels, will the 2023 version achieve the redemption they seek? Welcome to episode 36 of the Tomahawk Nation hoops dedicated podcast. We start with a brief recap of the Pitt and Miami games. Pitt seems to be dissolving as a program after the loss, while Miami was basically a live scrimmage for the final thirty minutes. Regardless, Florida State picked up a couple of road wins, which are key, as FSU has only played five times outside the friendly confines of the Tuck. Next we dip into the mailbag. We talk about the always debatable computer rankings over at kenpom.com. A question came in about coaching - specifically the post-Ham plan. But will Coach Hamilton ever retire? We also look ahead to the NCAA Tournament, focusing a lot on teams we may want to avoid, and a few that Florida State fans should be happy to see in their bracket. Last, the UNC preview. How dumb was it for them to schedule a late season game vs. Marquette (spoiler: very dumb). But they're still a dangerous team, and they've evolved a bit since FSU last played them due to the emergence of freshman sharpshooter Kerwin Walton. Though this is still a huge team that looks to get it done down low. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit podcastchoices.com/adchoices

Welcome to Season 4:Episode 1 of 'The Player And The Fan' featuring David Noel III and Quierra Luck. They are excited to bring you an official podcast highlighting both, equally important, sporting elements, the player and the Fan. They will declare their viewpoints weekly, featuring various sporting topics and games around the ACC, specifically North Carolina. Welcome to the new season! David and Quierra are happy to welcome you back with more hot topics, debates, and of course, featuring special guests. This year has been incredibly difficult for all of us. As we try and navigate our way through elections, racial injustice, and political division, the duo hopes to provide you with a short escape full of laughs, David's dramatic storytelling, and of course, analysis of the upcoming college basketball season. New Year, New Us!!! New season alert!! As David and Quierra transition into a new year, the two also thought it was time to start a new season. Season three was exceptional and deserved to be capped off with the new year podcast as intentions were set for bigger and better in 2021. This podcast was created between two friends who enjoy nothing more than talking sports and providing fans the answers they need about the sport they love, and they couldn't have done it without you! In the first episode of the new season, David breaks down North Carolina's win against Notre Dame; The Heels defeated the Fighting Irish, 66-65 with a 9 second shot by Leaky Black. David highlights the benefit of two post players and the noticeable selfishness on defense with freshman Kerwin Walton. Walton has made 10 threes in the previous four games. Though his defense IQ seems to be lacking, his ability to pull-up and shoot and create spacing below has helped. Spacing and team awareness has been a rising concern for the Heels, especially after the loss to N.C. State. As you listen throughout the podcast, please join in the conversation of the rush for players to the NBA. Why do players rush for the league without growing through the necessary steps to achieve high maturity and basketball IQ? Sit back, choose your side, and enjoy the dialogue! Make sure you let your voice be heard! Are you with The Player or The Fan?!
Shammond Williams was joined by John Fanta to break down North Carolina's come-from-behind win over Kentucky on Saturday. Why was Caleb Love's performance so important? Can UNC continue to rebound at this level? Oh, and Kerwin Walton!!!
