Introduction: Host Michael Rand starts with the Gophers men's basketball team's stunning comeback in at UCLA late Tuesday. The Bruins missed their free throws and Minnesota capitalized, getting a huge performance from Dawson Garcia and three tremendous plays from Lu'Cye Patterson down the stretch. And UCLA coach Mick Cronin, denied his 500th career win, blamed ... the fans? 8:00: Kent Youngblood joins the show to talk about the Gophers women's basketball team, which desperately needs a win over Purdue to bolster its NCAA tournament case. Plus they look at the offseason work done by the Lynx and wonder who the five best players are in franchise history. 29:00: Why don't the Twins steal bases?

2 hours and 10 minutes The Sponsors Thank you to Underground Printing for making this all possible. Rishi and Ryan have been our biggest supporters from the beginning. Check out their wide selection of officially licensed Michigan fan gear at their 3 store locations in Ann Arbor or learn about their custom apparel business at undergroundshirts.com. Our associate sponsors are: Peak Wealth Management, Matt Demorest - Realtor and Lender, Ann Arbor Elder Law, Michigan Law Grad, Human Element, Sharon's Heating & Air Conditioning, The Sklars Brothers, the Autograph: Fandom Rewarded app, Champions Circle, Winewood Organics, Community Pest Solutions, and Venue by 4M where we recorded this. 1. Basketball After TCU Starts at 1:00 Gee golly willickers that was a lot of turnovers. Michigan's team of point guards has none, unless you want to call Danny Wolf the point. Weird game where they turned the ball over 16 times, most of those steals, and still led at the half because when they do get a shot it's always at the rim or an open look from three. How to get Goldin involved? He's not really into the game, not just on his teammates not seeing him, but it's that as well. Walters is the most efficient offensive player in CBB but he's playing the same position as Wolf. Trying to figure out how the lineup shakes out because we're not going to have an eleven-man rotation all year. [The rest of the writeup and the player after THE JUMP]  2. Big Ten Basketball Preview: The Bottom Nine to Kenpom Starts at 29:14 Washington: Great Osobor was a great portal pickup but they can't keep C Franck Kepnang healthy. Rice transfer Mekhi Mason and NoDak transfer Tyree Ihenacho are uptransfers who had high usage at the 3 and 2, Butler transfer DJ Davis doesn't really do to for us either. Injuries already. Predicted finish: 18th. USC: They got Terrance Williams and they're all Terrance Williamses: 6'7” guys who can shoot save for “PG” Desmond Claude. Already injured. Projected finish: 16th. Minnesota: Speaking of injuries already; Year 4 for Johnson is another Year Zero after the guy they spent on in the portal got hurt. Seth likes (and pronounces) Lu'Cye Patterson at PG, and we all respect Dawson Garcia, but with their only other returner being carried off the court it could be rough. Predicted finish: 17th. Nebrasketball: Welcome to The Great Mid: Every basketball team from here on save Purdue is ranked closely together. Close loss to St Mary's in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. Injury to stretch 5 Rienk Mast really hurts them. We like Brice Williams and Juwan Gary, think Rollie Worster from Utah is a decent PG, but lost too much to make the tournament. Predicted finish: 15th. Rutgers: This is where I'm mad about the Kenpom format. Two top-5 freshmen join a very good backcourt of Williams and Derkack, but the loss of their center looms large. Problem is spacing. Predicted finish: 5th. Northwestern: Respectable loss at Dayton (71-66) and nonrespectable OT win vs #324 Eastern Illinois. No more Boo, and you can't make Ty Berry into that guy. Matthew Nicholson is a truck driver, Brooks Barnhizer has a bad stache, Nick Martinelli will have to drive the team. True freshman PG? Ew. Predicted finish: 12th. Iowa: Payton Sandfort is going to have to shoot, and shoot he shall. Josh Dix is going to have to take on a lot more usage unless Brock Harding can learn to score. Will be bad on defense but mid their way to wins with Owen Freeman the latest yucky C. Predicted finish: 13th. Michigan State: What are they doing in this section? It's a very Izzo team, with no idea what they're doing at C because nobody gets developed, and nobody making threes. But they do have athletes and Izzo will make them play defense. Frankie Fidler from Neb-Omaha was the top transfer in the conference, Jaden Akins and Jeremy Fears have talent. They'll be…MSU. Predicted finish: 5th, deservedly 8th. Maryland: I don't know any of these guys –Brian. Julian Reese at center you know. They're heavily reliant on a #12 overall Derik Queen, a one-and-done at the wing, but that's working so far, got a 4-point loss to Marquette out of him. Ja'Kobi Gillespie and Selton Miguel are a decent backcourt. Very mid. Predicted finish: 11th. 3. Big Ten Basketball Preview: The Top Nine to Kenpom Starts at 1:01:27 Penn State Way high at #34 due to a win over (very bad, no PG) Virginia Tech. Ace Baldwin is the latest PG who carries them, though there's some upside in Tennessee transfer Freddie Dilione. Predicted finish: 14th. Oregon is also rated too highly. Altman gets the kinds of guys who get rated for NBA purposes but makes decent teams out of them. C Nate Bittle and SF TJ Bamba are good enough to carry them, got an efficient PF from Stanford and upgraded PG Jackson Shelstad to a sophomore, so they're mid. Predicted finish: 10th. Indiana got some decent portal pickups but let's say it again: no shooting! We like former 5-star Stanford transfer Kanaan Carlyle and PG Myles Rice from P12, Oumar Ballo is 5-star from Zona to rim protect. So athletic, so little shooting. Predicted finish: 9th. Michigan 6th. Wisconsin: Back to being extremely Wisconsin including a 103-88 win vs Zona that featured a parade of whistles. Steven Crowl is now a point center extraordinaire, Nolan Winter is the next 6'11” shooter and rebounder, John Blackwell, Max Klesmit, and former CSU guard John Tonje can all play but not well enough to go to the NBA. PG Camren Hunter injury could set them back. Predicted finish: 4th. Ohio State: Led the year off with a win over Texas and a closs loss at A&M. Kept Bruce Thornton out of the draft and got back Meechie Johnson from a two-year lease to South Carolina. Added bigs from UK and Duke so maybe they can defense their way through the season. Predicted finish: 7th. Illinois: Only returning starter is burlyguard Ty Rodgers but they picked up two internationals who are Working Out: see threeing the hell out of Bama in a surprising road win. Ivisic is a 5-star little bro of the UK/Arkansas one, Kasparas Jakucionis is a lottery pick, Evansville transfer ben Humrichous is a stretch 4 with range, and backup PG from Zona Kylan Boswell and L'vile transfer Tre White have evident talent. Upgraded to predicted finish: 2nd. UCLA: Have a loss to New Mexico (not too bad and UCLA shot 5/23). Might be a defensive nightmare. Got Eric Dailey who we wanted, also Tyler Bilodeau, an Iggy like PF. Skyy Clark is not a good basketball player but Mick Cronin manages to win in ways Brian hates. Predicted finish: 3rd. Purdue: Matt Painter is the best coach in CBB. Braden Smith it turns out is much better than “guy who lobs it to Edey.” They found three more huge centers, though none are 7'4”, and the new freshman Gicarri Harris fits right in, looks like a find. Fletcher Loyer and Trey Kaufman-Renn round out the most complete roster in the league. Predicted finish: distant 1st. 4. Hot Takes and Around the Big Ten with Jamie Mac Starts at 1:36:13 Guys I want to get this out: you know the scores. Northwestern shot themselves in the foot, MSU has no pass rush, Purdue is dead as a door nail, Washington-UCLA is how we learned UCLA lost their 4th eligible year of a starting quarterback to being the holder in 2021.  MUSIC: "Moving Without Touching”—Rubblebucket "Old School"—2Pac "Water Underground"—Real Estate    “Across 110th Street”—JJ Johnson and his Orchestra

With a 54-42 record, they are in good shape to compete for a playoff spot. Whether they can catch Cleveland or secure a Wild Card berth largely will depend on position player health and the return to form of Pablo Lopez. Will they add anything at the trade deadline? And is anything new on the TV front after updates from Commissioner Rob Manfred? 30:00: Speaking of the Twins on TV, a listener sounds off on the whole situation.

The Final Four Is Not On The Schedule - A Michigan State Basketball Podcast.

September 4, 2023: Head coach Ben Johnson and the Minnesota Gophers are coming off of a statistically historically poor season. Out of 351 division-1 teams, the Gophers rated 235 in KenPom which was easily the worst in Big Ten. This is following a relatively successful year for a team that was cobbled together by Johnson with mostly transfers. Unfortunately for the Gophers, their weak roster was plagued by injuries to their star players - Dawson Garcia and Jameson Battle. The mild magic that occurred the year before (although Minnesota still didn't win a lot of conference games) was now gone and they only managed two wins in the league. Toughest yet is that Johnson and the Gophers continue to struggle to keep Minnesota talent from escaping the state and heading to other programs. Michigan State got Tre Holloman, Duke got Paulo Banchero, and the list goes on. So this year Minnesota is again faced with a challenging roster that has some unknown potential. Unfortunately for them, they will be without Jameson Battle and Ta'lon Cooper who have transferred out. Are you looking for Spartan gear? There's only one place to go to get your MSU T-shirts, hoodies, sweatshirts — Nudge Printing. (https://www.nudgeprinting.com) Nudge is owned and operated by Gabe and Brittany, two MSU alums. The business is operated out of Michigan and screen prints super high quality products. They also have a large assortment of apparel for other schools as well as stickers for your wall, car, or computer. You can also buy our merchandise to sport around town where all the sales proceeds go to support the show. If you have a home in Michigan you know the importance of clearing water efficiently away from your home off the roof. Unfortunately, the outdoor beauty of Michigan means you have to deal with leaves and debris that pile up in your gutters. Sometimes, those gutters also can't keep up with the rain or leave puddles by your foundation. If you live in the Grand Rapids area (Muskegon to Saugatuck to Rockford to Lowell) contact Kurt Stauffer at the Brothers that Just Do Gutters. (https://www.brothersgutters.com/grand-rapids-mi/). If you're anywhere in the metro Detroit area the Brothers have you covered too! (https://www.brothersgutters.com/metro-detroit-mi/). They are real professionals who will clean, repair, or replace your gutters and protect your home quickly and efficiently with friendly service. Mention Final Four to get 10% off your gutter work.

Jackson-Davis sank 10 of 20 shots from the floor and 11 of 13 from the free-throw line for the Hoosiers (13-6, 4-4 Big Ten Conference). He jumped two spots on Indiana's all-time scoring list into sixth place. Jackson-Davis finished with five blocked shots to tie Jeff Newton's school-record career total of 227. Joey Hauser was hot early, scoring 11 points to help the Spartans (13-7, 5-4) build a 17-8 lead six minutes into the game. After the Wolverines led for most of the second half, Pharrel Payne's layup drew the Golden Gophers within 55-51 and a free throw by Ta'lon Cooper made it 55-52 with 35 seconds left. San Francisco advanced to play the Eagles in the NFC title game next Sunday in Philadelphia after losing in that round to the Rams a year ago. The Cowboys lost for the record seventh straight time in the divisional round and have failed to make it to the NFC title game since winning their fifth Super Bowl title following the 1995 season. The stadium erupted when an image of the recovering Hamlin filled the massive end zone screens and fans turned toward the glass-enclosed suite and cheered. The move to relocate the game comes before the storm even began. The forecast is for between 1 to 3 feet of snow in the region through the weekend. The switch in sites means the Bills will play back-to-back games in Detroit. They’re scheduled to play the Lions on Thanksgiving.  This will be the third time that Ford Field has hosted a relocated game because of snow.  The Bills also played the Jets in Detroit in the 2014 season.   The Lions home also hosted a Minnesota Vikings game against the New York Giants in 2010 after heavy snow caused the roof of the Metrodome to collapse the morning of the game. NFL – Lions go for third straight win, seek to slow down Giants The New York Giants will try to improve to 8-2 and end the Detroit Lions’ two-game winning streak when the teams meet Sunday. The Giants returned from their bye week and beat the Houston Texans 24-16 at home. The Lions are improving under second-year coach Dan Campbell. They are looking for their first three-game winning streak since 2017. NFL – Rodgers, NFL players urge league to nix turf, go with grass Aaron Rodgers and his peers around the NFL are calling for teams to tear up their turf playing surfaces and replace them with grass. The outpouring comes a week after NFL Players Association President JC Tretter called on six venues to immediately change their field types, saying the artificial turf in those stadiums was resulting in higher injury rates. Players are concerned about non-contact and lower extremity injuries. The NFL has said its data shows injury rates are similar on grass and artificial turf. Rodgers says owners could be "putting your money where your mouth is if player safety is important.”  One of the fields mentioned is Ford Field in Detroit, which is a dome and grass cannot be grown inside. NHL – National Hockey League Last Night Detroit Red Wings 7, San Jose Sharks 4 Red Wings 7, Sharks 4 – Red Wings beat Sharks 7-4 to snap 4-game losing streak Moritz Seider scored the tiebreaking goal with 6:06 to play and the Detroit Red Wings overcame a four-point game from Erik Karlsson to beat the San Jose Sharks 7-4. Karlsson rallied San Jose back from a 4-2 deficit in the third period with his third assist and then the tying goal in a span of less than three minutes. But then the NHL’s reigning Rookie of the Year Seider answered 2:23 later when he took a pass from David Perron and beat James Reimer for his first goal of the season. The Red Wings snapped a four-game losing streak. MLB – Judge wins AL MVP in runaway; Goldschmidt takes NL prize Aaron Judge of the New York Yankees has won the American League MVP award, and St. Louis Cardinals slugger Paul Goldschmidt took the NL prize. After hitting 62 home runs this season to break the AL record, Judge easily beat out Los Angeles Angels two-way phenom Shohei Ohtani in an MVP race some thought might be close. The 6-foot-7 outfielder received 28 of 30 first-place votes and two seconds for 410 points from a Baseball Writers’ Association of America panel. Ohtani, last year’s winner, was picked first on two ballots and second on the other 28 for 280 points. Goldschmidt won the NL award for the first time after a couple of close calls earlier in his career. Padres third baseman Manny Machado came in second. MLB – Texas Rangers to host MLB’s 2024 All-Star Game Baseball Commissioner Rob Manfred announced Thursday that the Texas Rangers will host the 2024 All-Star Game. Manfred announced the game will be held July 16, 2024 at Globe Life Field, which opened during the 2020 pandemic season. The retractable roof stadium hosted the neutral site World Series and NL Championship Series that season. Manfred made the announcement at the conclusion of this week’s owners’ meetings in New York. Next year’s game will take place in Seattle, which last hosted in 2001 in Ichiro’s rookie year and Cal Ripken Jr.’s final season. The 2026 game will take place in Philadelphia to coincide with the 250th anniversary of the founding of the USA. WNBA – Griner has begun serving sentence in Russian penal colony WNBA star Brittney Griner has begun serving her nine-year sentence for drug possession at a Russian penal colony. That’s according to statements from her lawyers and agent on Thursday. Her lawyers say they visited her last week at a penal colony in Mordovia, about 350 kilometers (210 miles) east of Moscow. They say, “Brittney is doing as well as could be expected and trying to stay strong as she adapts to a new environment.” The Biden administration has been trying for months to negotiate the release of Griner and another American jailed in Russia, Michigan corporate security executive Paul Whelan. Sunday Detroit Lions at New York Giants, 1:00 p.m.                   Rock 107 WIRX 12:00 Chicago Bears at Atlanta Falcons, 1:00 p.m. Philadelphia Eagles at Indianapolis Colts, 1:00 p.m. NFL – NFL shifts Bills’ game vs. Browns to Detroit due to storm The NFL is relocating the Bills’ home game against the Cleveland Browns to Detroit on Sunday because of a lake-effect snowstorm set to hit the Buffalo region. The Wolverines, who are 10-0 for the first time since 2006 and boast the nation’s best defense, are aiming to keep their record perfect before the showdown next week at second-ranked Ohio State for the Big Ten East title. Illinois, which has the No.2-rated defense, has lost its past two games against unranked Purdue and Michigan State. The Illini need to win their last two games and hope Purdue loses one to earn the Big Ten West title. NCAA – UC Board of Regents delays decision on UCLA move to Big Ten The University of California Board of Regents has scheduled a special meeting for Dec. 14 in Los Angeles to finalize a decision on UCLA’s planned move to the Big Ten Conference. Regents set the date during a meeting in San Francisco, the second public session where the move was debated. UCLA announced on June 30 that it was leaving the Pac-12 for the Big Ten in 2024. USC is also moving to the Big Ten, but it’s a private institution and not part of the UC system. NFL – National Football League – Week 11 Last Night Tennessee Titans 27, Green Bay Packers 17 Titans 27, Packers 17 – Tannehill leads Titans to 27-17 victory over Packers Ryan Tannehill threw for 333 yards and two touchdowns to outduel Aaron Rodgers as the Tennessee Titans defeated the Green Bay Packers 27-17. He went 22 of 27 and had one interception as the Titans won for the seventh time in eight games. Rodgers went 24 of 39 for 227 yards with two touchdown passes to rookie Christian Watson. Green Bay has lost six of seven. Hubert Davis' first team at UNC averaged 77.9 points per game, which would have been 12th amongst teams in the Roy Williams era. Armando Bacot led the way for the Tar Heels with 16.3 points per game. Three other Tar Heels averaged double-digit scoring, Caleb Love (15.9), Brady Manek (15.1), and RJ Davis (13.5). Carolina held a +6.6 scoring margin over their opponents, a mark that would have only bested three Roy Williams era teams – 2009-10, 2019-20, and 2020-21. The Heels return 71.2% of their scoring including four of their top five in terms of points scored last season. Along with Manek, the other players the Tar Heels will be without are transfers Dawson Garcia, Anthony Harris, and Kerwin Walton. Given the fact that five different players led the team in scoring and five different players had at least one 20-point game, this is a “pick your poison” type team that opposing defenses will have trouble game-planning for. Can Pete Nance step in and make up for Brady Manek's scoring production? Can any of the freshmen chip in buckets here and there? Will Leaky Black, Puff Johnson, or Dontrez Styles increase their scoring? Can the Tar Heels as a unit boost their scoring average north of 80? We'll find out soon enough! The 2021-22 North Carolina Tar Heels basketball team ushered in a new era as brand new head coach Hubert Davis took over the reins from three-time national champion Roy Williams. Along with Davis, the second-leading three-point shooter in NBA history, came a higher reliance upon the three-point shot. His first UNC team was led from beyond the arc by Brady Manek (40.3%), RJ Davis (36.7%), and Caleb Love (36.0%). As a team, Carolina, shot 35.8% while attempting the most threes by a team in program history (916). The Heels lose three of their top five three-point percentage shooters, including Manek, Kerwin Walton, and Dawson Garcia. Can Davis and Love build on what they accomplished last year? Can Pete Nance step in and once again shoot north of 40%? Will returners like Puff Johnson or D'Marco Dunn be able to find a more consistent shooting stroke? Introduction: The Wolves' 124-96 loss to Memphis on Tuesday was predictable and unwatchable on multiple levels. Memphis had far more urgency than Minnesota after losing Game 1 at home, and the Grizzlies played to their strengths with depth, defensive tenacity and offensive rebounding. The Wolves, meanwhile, tried to generate too much offense in isolation and suffered through a night with Karl-Anthony Towns in foul trouble. It was a grinding game early, making it hard to watch -- if you could watch at all. Problems with blackouts and streaming services left many fans angry. 7:00: Marcus Fuller joins host Michael Rand for a breakdown of the Gophers men's basketball team's efforts in the transfer portal. After landing Dawson Garcia early in the week, Ben Johnson has turned his attention to bolstering the backcourt. 27:00: Kevin Fiala, Matt Boldy and Cam Talbot continued to shine for the Wild in an important 2-0 over Montreal, while the Twins bullpen blew another lead and misses Taylor Rogers more than ever.

North Carolina center Armando Bacot officially announced on Wednesday that he would be returning for his senior season. This is enormous news for head coach Hubert Davis who will now have one more year with his record-setting big man and the most indispensable player on his roster. It will also allow the freshmen big men an opportunity to develop under an ACC Player of the Year candidate. NIL considerations certainly played a huge role in this decision. On the less positive side of things, Dawson Garcia and Anthony Harris have each decided to enter the transfer portal. Garcia's news broke on Wednesday morning while Harris's decision came out Wednesday afternoon. No word yet on where they will each transfer. With Garcia, given his family's health struggles, one would expect him to land somewhere close to home. Best of luck to both young men as they explore new opportunities. Host Isaac Schade unpacks the ramifications of all three decisions, chief of which is the impact on the 2022-23 roster and how scholarship math will be broken down. Carolina currently sits at 12 scholarships used of their potential 13. That number does not include Leaky Black, the Heels would be at the right number of 13. We are still awaiting decisions from Black, Caleb Love, RJ Davis, and to see if any other players decide to transfer.
