Acclaimed author and artist Morgan Harper Nichols (All Along You Were Blooming) joins The Art of Kindness with Robert Peterpaul to discuss: kindness through artistic spaces, the thoughtfulness of kindness, the kindness of memes and much more. Morgan Harper Nichols is an artist, writer, and creator based in Georgia. Diagnosed with autism, ADHD, and sensory processing disorder, Morgan's work often explores themes of embracing life's narrative and creating room to breathe. She began creating art and poetry in response to social media messages she received in 2017, and since then, her practice has expanded to include digital art, collage, coding, and 3D environments. Morgan is the creator of the app Storyteller and the online shop Garden24. Her WSJ bestselling book, All Along You Were Blooming, is one of several published works, and she currently serves as Vice President on the board of TWLOHA, a mental health organization. Morgan is passionate about the intersection of art, storytelling, and health, and her long-term goal is to teach and develop resources that explore how we create and interact with narratives in our lives. Laura and Todd celebrate Pride Month with an inspiring interview with living legend L Morgan Lee, the first openly transgender actor to be nominated for a Tony Award for her featured role in "A Strange Loop.” As a seasoned performer with over two decades of experience on various stages, Lee shares her remarkable journey and unwavering advocacy for transgender representation in the arts and invites us into her deeply personal journey of self-discovery and resilience. Spending years performing as a boy before a transformative encounter with a trans person and non-binary individuals sparked deep self-reflection on gender and identity, she finally decided to "come out" as the woman she always knew she was. Lee illuminates her profound realization of her true self and emphasizes that everyone is undergoing a transition – a journey of self-love and self-acceptance. L Morgan also shares with us how her transition has not only reshaped her friendships but also strengthened her relationship with her mother and most importantly, herself. Speaking candidly about the realities and fears of dating as a trans woman, including the tragic instances of violence she experienced, Lee firmly debunks the harmful stereotype that trans women are immune to abuse. In this episode, Lee also delves into the critical discussion of gender-affirming care for children, with Lee advocating for a balanced approach that prioritizes mental health and enables children to make informed decisions about their gender identities at their own pace. In this remarkable interview, L Morgan passionately expresses her aspiration to serve as a beacon of representation in the entertainment industry, urging everyone to embrace their true selves and calling for increased visibility and inclusivity for the LGBTQIA+ community. Don't miss out on this inspiring journey of self-acceptance, advocacy for trans rights, and a rallying call for love.Links for L Morgan Lee: L Morgan on WikipediaL Morgan on IMBDL Morgan Lee Interview on TodayL Morgan Lee's OfficialWebsiteDaily News InterviewL Morgan on InstagramL Morgan on TwitterL Morgan on Facebook Hosted on Acast. The two men's fates become intertwined as forced competition drives a wedge between them that culminates in a single desperate act that leaves one dead and the other brutalized. FRANCOIS & THE REBELS (by Jaime Cepero) - Francois and the Rebels is a punk rock telling of the 1791 Haitian Revolution. With a pulsing punk rock score, and a story pulled from historic events full of love, loss, and deception, Francois and the Rebels tells an important and often forgotten black history through the lens of an immersive high energy rock and roll experience. #46 - L Morgan Lee: The Perception of the Multi-Hyphenate

MichaelKushner

Happy Pride! “The type of multi-hyphenate I am is I need to really clearly be able to compartmentalize what version of myself is being put into what thing. In terms of photography, if I have not been doing freeform things - I feel like I'm being worked to the bone.”  L Morgan Lee (A Strange Loop) is an artist who sees herself through her photography. And if anyone wants to know anything about her, all you have to do is look at one of her images. As we celebrate Pride month in 2021, this episode is an enjoyable and honest slice of life for two LGBTQIA+ multi-hyphenates in the theatre industry, both of who happen to be photographers. L Morgan's first priority is being an actress. She keeps in mind that perception is so much a part of the business, so it's in her best interest to be as specific as possible in terms of being an actress. “The group of ladies that I would love to be with in terms of acting,'' she says, “You can't just go on a website and book them for headshots.” Being a multi-hyphenate also welcomes different communities. “I think community is number-one a life line to me,” she says. “I need to have people that I feel close to. I have a community of trans women who are over fifty. There's two or three girls who have taught me so much without even knowing they are teaching me.” And of course, there's some photographer dishing - so are you ready for the tea to be spilled? Between L and Michael, the stories from behind the lens are endless. For one, they view the headshot as a survival job, while the other views the headshot as a way to express themselves. So, if each photographer has their own view of the art form - is there contention? Is there jealousy? Is it territorial? What are the boundaries we enforce to protect our heart?  Plus, if you're a business owner, like a photographer, L Morgan and Michael go deep into the practices of owning a business and finding the sweet spot of how to stay accessible, but also charging rates where the business owner can survive.  Enjoy this episode as Michael and L Morgan dive into knowing one's worth, money management, trans identity, joining the circles of our inspirations, a photographer's boundaries, and what it means to take charge of how the industry perceives an artist.  L MORGAN LEE (she/her) is an Obie award-winning actress, theatre maker, and photographer. She is most known for her performance in the Pulitzer Prize winning musical, A Strange Loop which garnered her a Lucille Lortel nomination and the distinction of being the first openly transgender actress to originate a role in a Pulitzer Prize winning piece of theatre. Most recently, L Morgan was cast to portray artist Lili Elbe in a British musical adaptation of the novel, The Danish Girl being workshopped in the UK. She is also developing a new play entitled, The Women (2021) which was seen in Ars Nova's 2021 Vision Residency. Other credits include new works with Long Wharf Theater, Baltimore Center Stage, 5th Avenue Theater, Musical Theatre Factory and more. L Morgan is dedicated to being a part of work centering underrepresented voices on both stage and screen. "She needed a hero, so that's what she became."
