Late on Friday the Waitangi Tribunal released its interim report into the proposed Regulatory Standards Bill.
Tonight, we'll read a selection of recipes from the book English Housewifry by Elizabeth Moxon, published in 1764, starting with a recipe for whipt sillabubs.Moxon's book was one of the earliest English cookery books written specifically for middle-class women managing their own households, rather than for professional cooks or the aristocracy. Her recipes are practical but far from plain, offering glimpses into both the culinary expectations and the social rituals of Georgian-era domestic life. The title page promises recipes that are “useful, substantial and splendid,” and the tone throughout is no-nonsense, with an emphasis on health and frugality—though it's clear Moxon didn't shy away from a bit of showiness in presentation. A whipt sillabub, for example, was a frothy dessert drink made of sweetened wine or cider and thickened cream, often served in decorative glasses and topped with foam. It's the kind of indulgence that would have delighted guests at a genteel supper table, bridging the gap between refreshment and dessert. Learn more about your ad choices. The openness and compassion of Pope Francis may carry over to the next pontiff to take up his title. The Head of the Catholic Church died last night after a stroke - he was 88. A period of mourning has begun. Worshippers will flock to the Vatican in the coming days to farewell Pope Francis, including the Cardinals who will elect his successor. Former representative to the Holy See, Sir David Moxon, says the Pope chose most of the Cardinals - so he'd expect them to value a warm and loving Church. "I think that it would be highly likely that the next Pope would be someone who would respect the pontificate of Pope Francis." LISTEN ABOVESee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

"La Partida de Ajedrez" (Moxon's Master) —a veces traducido como "El Amo de Moxon" — es un relato fantástico del escritor norteamericano Ambrose Bierce (1842-1914), publicado originalmente en la edición del 16 de abril de 1899 del periódico San Francisco Examiner, y luego reeditado en la antología de 1910: ¿Pueden estas cosas existir? (Can Such Things Be?). Es sin duda uno de los cuentos de Ambrose Bierce más destacados, donde se narra la historia de un robot, o mejor dicho, de un autómata, con una gran destreza para el ajedrez, así también como para ejercer el mayor grado de crueldad sobre su creador. This episode of Across The Margin : The Podcast features an interview with A.R. Moxon, author of The Revisionaries, a genre-bending debut novel that The Washington Post said "might be the weirdest novel of the year." His weekly online newsletter, The Reframe, enjoys a readership of over 10,000 people. His latest release — Very Fine People: Confessions of an American Fool — is the focus of this episode. For some people, the rise of Donald Trump's MAGA cult represented only ongoing proof of a supremacist nation they had endured all along. Author A.R. Moxon was not one of them. He was caught unaware. Thus begins this confession of an American fool, a methodical mapping of the nation the author failed to see — a nation of "very fine people" too convinced they are exceptionally good to acknowledge the ways they participate in abuse and harm. Very Fine People is an essay collection contemplating what to do about a populist far-right authoritarian uprising involving so many of our friends and family members. Written from 2016 to 2023, it is a work of progressing awareness, pondering the questions "how did we get here?" and "what do we do about it?" In this episode host Michael Shields and A.R. Moxon ruminate over their shared nativity about how many people in their life, and in America, are comfortable with an open white supremacist and fascist as a president of the United States, while considering how it's clear that an emboldened and vocal minority is willing to do anything to protect their supremacy. They talk about the power of love, art, and story in combating a movement riddled with hate, how being frank with language is a way to replace “current ideas with new ones,” how a hope full of rugged resolve exists within all the madness, and so much more.Grab a copy of Very Fine People here! Friday Night Lights meets raunchy 80's comedy, we discover Paul Walker, the coach does Hitler salutes and Dawson drops dimes as a 22-yr-old HS senior. Varsity Blues was so wrong and so glorious. “Playing football at West Canaan may have been the opportunity of your lifetime, but I don't want YOUR LIFE!!” Somehow, some way, the academy failed to hand a gold trophy to James Van Der Beek after delivering that glorious line, but Varsity Blues is still a timeless classic of high school football glory. As well as painkillers, naked whipped cream bikinis, undersized wide receivers who truly belonged in prison, coaches with mid-50's ideas about minorities scoring TD's, “Puke & rally!!” being a battle cry instead of a call for AA, etc, etc. Yeah, we're gonna have some fun with this one as the college football season is close enough to taste. (Although, the taste of college football is pretty awful if I think about it.)

She says if people want to strike, they can. The public stocks in St Clement's Dane's parish (now Portugal Street in London's Strand) were finally dismantled on 4th August, 1826. They had originally been mandated in 1351, to subjugate labourers demanding higher wages. Not to be confused for pillories (which restrain both head and hands), stocks (which restrain only the feet) were used for lesser ‘crimes', such as homosexuality, heresy, and drunkenness. The treatment of prisoners was essentially at the crowd's discretion: at the minor end of the scale, humiliation, but, if rocks or bricks were thrown, sometimes fatality. In this episode, Arion, Rebeca and Olly uncover celebrities-in-the-stocks Cardinal Wolsey and Daniel Defoe; explain why this medieval punishment was never formally abolished in Britain; and reveal the ecclesiastical purpose of ‘the finger stocks'...
