This week, Jonathan Lovitz, Director of Public Affairs & Senior Advisor for Economic Development at the US Department of Commerce, LGBTQIA+ Rights Advocate, and small business and public policy advocate takes time out of his very busy schedule to sit down with Laura and Todd to talk about advocating for the rights of others, the importance of mental health in advocacy and working together to overcome the divide we have in America today. Jonathan tells us about how he transitioned from performance (Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat and Jesus Christ Superstar and a news anchor for Logo TV) to advocacy and politics and how both really aren't that different from each other. We also learn the true story behind Jonathan's refusal to serve on a New York City jury, citing the lack of equal protections and marriage equality for LGBT citizens in the state, something that led to multiple appearances on MSNB, NPR and MSNBC and thrust him into the advocacy spotlight. We learn what it's like to live out his dream working for the President at the Chamber of Commerce writing, lobbying and building programs that create jobs and equal opportunities for disenfranchised members of society, the emotional toll it takes on him and others to lead these movements and how he handles attacks and projection from others. Despite the accomplishments that have been made in the LGBTQIA+ community, recent events have made it quite clear that the work is nowhere near done and Jonathan emphasizes how important it is for everyone, including women, people of color, veterans, immigrants and the disabled, to link arms as one and fight the good fight for equality, because we are all in this together. We talk about how it has become apparent that there are people in power dedicated to reversing progress made by our disenfranchised communities and Jonathan is here to re-assure those on both sides of the aisle that a scarcity and individualistic mindset will not serve anyone; in fact there is enough pie to go around for everyone! While in the military, he spent most of his time with the a scout sniper platoon, where he learned self-reliance and confidence. After he left the military, he began BASE jumping because he grew tired of sky diving. However, these “big boy games” caused him to lose over 33 friends in the process. In this week's episode, Next Page hosts Missy McCall, Astrologer, Intuitive Cosmo Counselor, Near Death Survivor and Blogger. Despite growing up in a religious household and its taboo status amongst her friends and family, Missy has been practicing astrology since she was 16. Before she became an astrologer, she spent five years fighting sex trafficking in Sacramento, California and provided two houses for rescued victims of sex trafficking. However, in 2020 God had a new calling for Missy - to move on from sex trafficking, get a divorce and use her intuitive gift to help others. She tells us all about growing up as “the mean girl,” until she fell out of 3rd story window, broke her back and was paralyzed from the waist down at 12 years old. Her accident resulted in a coma and while others watched her lay in a hospital bed for two weeks, Missy experienced a Near Death Experience. Following her NDE, Missy tried to commit suicide multiple times, but was fortunately unsuccessful and ultimately gained her ability to walk again. The gang learns that Missy developed her intuitive skills when she was only 8 years old, but did not embrace them until later in life, when she became a Cosmo Counselor – a profession that helps others to read and interpret their astrological chart. This week on Next Page, Laura and Todd sit down with the truly incredible Robin Aisha Landsong, a multiple Near-Death Survivor, Transformational Speaker, Medicine Singer, Visionary Artist, Author and Craniosacral Therapist. Robin experienced the unimaginable. At the age of 8, she was living in an abusive and neglectful home when she was abducted and taken to Rhodesia, Africa (Zimbabwe) at the height of the Rhodesian war. There she was beaten, passed off, and left for dead in the African bush. Not long after she had her first Near-Death Experience (NDE) from exposure, spent the night in a tree and eventually found her way to a village, where she was miraculously accepted by the Women and Children of the village as one of their own, despite being white. It was in that village where she was shown true love and peace for the first time. Unfortunately, that peace was short-lived. After only 4 weeks, she was shot by an African soldier, her village was attacked and most of her newly found family was murdered. Robin went on to experience two more NDE'S and after being smuggled into South Africa, she was returned to her abusive household. After many years of suffering Robin eventually found healing and realized her experiences and intuition could help others heal from their own trauma. She now now helps others heal from their own trauma through speaking, therapy, artistry and medicine singing. In this episode, the group discuss her harrowing story, as well as the neurobiology of trauma, how forgiveness shouldn't be rushed, the power of medicine songs, being receptive to healing and the impacts of inter-generational trauma. We cannot emphasize enough how powerful Robin's story is and the incredible journey she has been on; all while maintaining a positive attitude and continuing to help others. Johnny has such an incredible story of overcoming grief, Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, addiction and divorce and his biggest hope is that his story can help others that may have experienced similar hardships. In this episode we learn all about Johnny's childhood growing up with 9 siblings in rural Louisiana. Raised by his mother and an alcoholic father, Johnny had his first drink and his first drunk at 11 years old. While he remembers a happy childhood, in his early twenties he developed a full-blown addiction to drugs and alcohol. At the age of 29 Johnny managed to get sober, come out of the closet and went on to help other gay and HIV positive addicts stay sober in the height of the aids epidemic. But that was only the beginning of Johnny's story; in the early 2000's Johnny lost his Mom to Vascular Dementia and to his family's horror, his Mother's body went missing for 8 months in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina. While Johnny and his family were reunited with their Mother's body serendipitously on Mother's Day, the compounded grief of losing her, as well as his hometown, manifested itself both mentally and physically in the form of anxiety, depression and painful sebaceous cysts. Once Johnny moved to LA he realized that despite his sobriety he still needed help and was ultimately diagnosed with PTSD. We learn that as he begins to heal, he also meets his former husband Olympic Gold Medalist Greg Louganis, someone Johnny has immense respect and gratitude for and the person who has ultimately and truly helped him with his unresolved trauma. McCord Henry is a hotel, food and beverage management director, a recovered alcoholic, advocate for alcohol addiction awareness, and the founder of Living Recovered and Scripted Wit. After graduating from the College of Charleston, McCord moved to LA, where he slowly developed what would become a debilitating addiction to alcohol. While attending a wedding in 2014 his family conducted an intervention and he agreed to live in a sober living house for 9 months. However, the sober living house didn't seem to focus on the real problem at hand and within a year, he was off the wagon and no longer able to maintain being a “functional alcoholic.” After losing his job due to passing out on the clock and a week-long bender, he finally reached out to his brother who sent him to the ER. McCord hasn't picked up a drink since. McCord shares with Laura and Todd the hardcore realities of alcohol addiction and the physical and emotional side effects of being an alcoholic. During his recovery, McCord became aware of his distaste for the “anonymous” aspect of Alcoholics Anonymous and the idea that he would forever live in recovery. That perspective ultimately led him to create the philosophy of Living Recovered and a desire to be open and honest about his alcohol abuse. McCord has since been compelled to give back to the rehab facility that saved him and other alcoholic awareness groups by raising money running the biggest marathons worldwide. McCord shares with Next Page how he is able to successfully run the Food and Beverage Program at the Pendry Hotel, create wine lists without taking a sip, and how his Instagram account Scripted Wit came to life through his love of quotes. McCord's story is not only inspirational, but one of extreme triumph over hardship and addiction. The three of them also discuss the pros and cons of dating while sober, learning to navigate the world without alcohol and how the support of his family and friends helped him out of the darkness of addiction. Don't miss this week's episode with McCord, who shows us what it means to truly recover! Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.
This week, Laura and Todd return with a powerfully moving and at times unbelievable story of triumph with their first guest of Season 2, Frank Meeink. Frank is a former white supremacist, who by the age of 17 had become one of the most notorious skinhead gang leaders on the East Coast. We hear about how Frank's violent and neglectful childhood in South Philadelphia primed him to hate, while addition made him easy prey for a small group of neo-Nazi recruiters. At the height of his membership, he had his own public access talk show, called the Reich, he appeared on Nightline and other media outlets as a spokesperson for neo-Nazi topics and regularly recruited members of his South Philadelphia neighborhood to join the movement. Frank lays out in plain terms how his traumatic upbringing ultimately led to his participation in neo-Nazi “missions,” where he and his fellow skinheads terrorized, beat and kidnapped Jewish, black, gay and other minority group members. One of those missions landed him in prison by the age of 18. While in prison, Frank's belief system was challenged by his friendship and comradery with African-American teammates from his prison football league and after being released, his employment by a kind Jewish antique's dealer. Soon afterwards, Frank defected from the white supremacy movement and began speaking on behalf of the Anti-Defamation League as well as appearing on NPR, CNN, and other news outlets as a spokesperson against the neo-Nazi movement. He is also the author of the book “An Autobiography of a Recovering Skinhead,” in which he details his experiences being recruited by and ultimately escaping the clutches of White Supremacy. Laura and Todd also speak with Frank about discovering he was in fact Jewish, his religious journey and how he recently “came out” to his Synagogue about his troubled and violent past as a white supremacist. Today Frank helps others to escape the neo-Nazi movement and speaks to groups all over the world about police reform. We were absolutely BLOWN away by this raw and at times very emotional discussion with Frank, who epitomizes trauma recovery and is living proof that no matter how lost someone may be, there is always hope of finding your way back to the light.Autobiography of a Recovering SkinheadWikipedia Page on FrankTranscript of His Speech in front of CongressTrafficking Hate PodcastWho Do You Hate – Frank's Intervention of a RacistSpeaking Out About White Supremacists on CNNHuffpost – Can a Skinhead RecoverAnti-Defamation LeagueHarmony Through Hockey Hosted on Acast. Laura and Todd sit down with the awe-inspiring Actress Susan Heyward to discuss power dynamics, racism, typecasting and religious trauma. In improvisational theater, ‘status' refers to the power dynamics at play in a relationship between two characters. Sometimes, however, those power dynamics spill over into the real world, particularly for Black women actors. Susan who is a phenomenal actress, probably best known for her role as Tamika Ward in the hit Netflix comedy-drama series, Orange Is the New Black. She also starred in the PlayStation Network original series, Powers, and the HBO period drama, Vinyl. In this episode, Susan shares the definition of ‘misogynoir', a term used to describe the specific prejudice directed at Black women, and how she has seen it play out in her personal life and her career. She explains how tapping into an ‘as if' reality as an actor, breaking free from her instinct to code-switch, and making a commitment to healing from her trauma have helped her reclaim her power and why she believes that context and a deeper understanding of our shared trauma can facilitate collective healing. Laura starts dance lessons and Todd tries to understand sports before talking to the multi-talented broadway performer from Rock of Ages and all around kind human, Regina LeVert. Regina talks to Laura and Todd about what it was like being born with 6 fingers, being a part of a musical family with relatives like Eddie LeVert of the “O'Jays” and Gerald LeVert of “LeVert,” and her experience with Muscle Tension Dysphonia, a condition caused by stress that quite literally took her voice. The trio also dives deep in to what it was like for Regina growing up in America as a black woman, racism on different coasts, code-switching, being white adjacent, the Will Smith “incident” and what it means when people say “to privileged people, equality feels like oppression.” Regina's latest work, Black Canvas, will be available to the public soon (we'll keep you posted!) and her yet to be titled book containing interviews with broadway and theater legends will be released within the year. Regina's WebsiteRegina's Social:FacebookInstagramRock of Ages Review:“Notably, Regina LeVert has such a commanding presence as Justice that when she comes on in Act II, she is instantaneously a crowd favorite. LeVert further has the audience in the palm of her hand with a contemporary version of Journey's “Any Way You Want It,” which puts the spotlight on Justice's agile pole dancers”About Regina: She was such a shy kid that it wasn't until college, that she discovered her love for the arts. Shortly after passing Acting 101 for Non Majors, Regina started a journey that has gifted her with seeing most of the world. While singing and dancing in many tours and productions in Europe, Asia, Australia and the United States, Regina became a certified scuba diver, zip-lined in the Costa Rican rainforest, sung in the Sydney Opera House, eaten scorpion in Singapore, kayaked with a school of dolphins and cage dived with sharks in Hawaii, and shot grade 4 rapids in New Zealand! Regina's love of singing is in her blood…she is proud to count the late Gerald LeVert of the R&B group LeVert, and his father Eddie LeVert of the Grammy Hall of Fame R&B group, the O'Jays, as family who have inspired her. Next up: trying to hit a lay up like her Cleveland Cavalier cousin Caris LeVert! Ha! Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.
