In Episode 333 of Everyday Injustice, host David Greenwald speaks with journalist and author Justine van der Leun about her new book, Unreasonable Women: Three Stories of Violence, Imprisonment and Extraordinary Survival. The conversation explores a troubling reality within the criminal legal system: how survivors of domestic violence and sexual abuse are often criminalized rather than protected. Drawing on years of investigative reporting and extensive research, van der Leun examines the stories of women whose attempts to survive violence ultimately led to their incarceration. Van der Leun explains how her investigation began with the case of Nikki Addimando, a New York woman convicted after killing her abusive partner while claiming self-defense. The case prompted a larger question: How often are survivors punished for acts committed in the context of abuse? To find answers, van der Leun conducted a groundbreaking survey of approximately 10,000 incarcerated women, receiving more than 1,000 responses. Her findings suggest that a significant portion of women in prison are there because they acted to protect themselves or loved ones from violence, while many more carry extensive histories of abuse that went unaddressed by social institutions before they entered the criminal legal system. The episode highlights the stories of three women featured in the book: Tanisha Williams of Michigan, who became entangled in a murder case after being coerced by an abusive partner; Gemma Heffernan of Missouri, who fought back against a husband who subjected her to years of violence; and TC Brooks of California, who killed her abusive stepfather after enduring years of sexual abuse and witnessing ongoing violence against her mother. Through these stories, van der Leun argues that the legal system often struggles to recognize the realities of coercion, trauma, and survival, instead relying on rigid categories that separate victims from offenders. Throughout the discussion, Greenwald and van der Leun examine broader questions about accountability, systemic failure, and reform. Van der Leun contends that many of the women filling America's prisons were failed long before they entered the criminal legal system and that their cases reveal deep structural shortcomings in how society responds to abuse. The conversation offers a powerful look at the intersection of gender, violence, trauma, and incarceration, challenging listeners to reconsider who the justice system punishes—and why.

Die große Verwirrungen der Superintelligenz ES führt zur Katastrophe für die Unsterblichen. Denn es muss sich noch zeigen wie lange die Terraner noch unsterblich sind. Die neuen Favoriten der Superintelligenz beginnen im Chaos der Post-Monos-Ära Bedeutung zu gewinnen. Doch wer sind die Linguiden und was ist ihr Ziel. Der Zyklus kann Chris‘ Meinung nach durch kreative Einzelromane und Handlungsblöcke überzeugen. "Spekulationen bringen uns nicht weiter" ist nicht nur ein bekannter und häufig gebrauchter Spruch von Perry Rhodan aus den Anfangszeiten der Serie, sondern auch das Motto von Folge 63. Das hat weniger damit zu tun, dass wir das jetzt einstellen werden. Sondern eher, dass die Spekulationen die man anstellt, in den wenigsten Fällen ans Ziel führen. Eher eröffnen Sie dem dem Chefautoren die Möglichkeit, neue Ideen zu sammeln oder das Ziel doch noch in letzter Sekunde zu ändern. Hätte Perry Rhodan den seinen "damals" die ein oder andere Spekulation mehr erlaubt, wer weiß wo die Menschheit heute schon wäre. In Folge 63 des Radio Freies Ertrus geht es mal wieder viel über Träume. Leider nicht über die eigenen, sondern die von Gucky und Sichu Dorksteiger. Die beiden wurden von Bonifer in dem obstrusen Mentatron versteckt und sollen so zu Perry Rhodan in die Agolei gebracht werden. Traditionell tut man sich im Hause Ertrus mit Träumen ein wenig schwer, also hat man sich wieder Interpretationsunterstützung in Form des Oberpiraten und Gerätewechslers Heiko an Bord geholt. Kann er die Träume retten oder gehts noch viel tiefer hinein in den Kaninchenbau? Findet sich dort eventuell sogar Alice im Wunderland? Welche Funktion hat Zhobotter bzw. kann dieser eventuell mit Maschinen besser umgehen als mit Menschen? Und ist das im Perryversum der 3000er+ Bände noch ungewöhnlich? Träumt Gucky von der Vergangenheit und Sichu eventuell von ihrer Zukunft? Wird sie eventuell noch von ihrer ganz persönlichen und eigentlich lang vergangenen Vergangenheit noch eingeholt? Ist Bull überhaupt noch Bull oder längst nur eine Computersimulation von Phönix und dem Mentatron?Warum kann Nichts brennen und warum muss Shrell so viel klauen, obwohl sie doch selber so viel zu haben scheint. Oder hatte sie eventuell mal alles und jetzt ist alles weg? Wer sind jetzt die Leun warum brauchen die einen den Gleichklang und andere vermutlich nicht. Ist der Gleichklang in Moll oder eher Dur geschrieben oder hat man sich hier was eigenes ausgedacht? Wenn man sich das so ansieht, dann muss man vermutlich zu dem Schluss kommen: "Spekulationen bringen uns nicht weiter" und daher viel Spaß bei Radio Freies Ertrus Folge 63 ...

In September 2017, after years of physical abuse and sexual torture, Nicole "Nikki" Addimando fatally shot her abusive partner in self-defense. And in February 2020, Nicole was sentenced to 19 years to life in prison for killing the perpetrator of her abuse, where she became part of the 97% of women in prison nationwide who have experienced physical or sexual abuse.Long time listeners of WeSTAT know that I have been personally following this case very closely. In 2021, I had the opportunity to focus on Nikki's case in two episodes: One with Rebecca and Wendy, two representatives of the Nicole Addimando Community Defense Committee, as well as with journalist Justine van der Leun who partnered with Lemonada media and Spiegel and Grau to release a six part award winning podcast about Nikki's case called “Believe Her” .Through all of my following of this case, one person's name comes up over and over, and that is Nikki's sister, Michelle Horton.
