Do you ever feel alone? Lonely? Disconnected from the rest of the world? Does it get you down? It's the human condition. And how we decide to handle it may just determine how we experience our journey in terms of our own mental health and even spirituality. For this podcast, I invited two people who have had profound experiences that you would think would lead to incredible isolation. Each person has a totally different perspective on their experience. Lise DeGuire shares her journey of surviving severe burns at the age of four.  Her sunny disposition and determination to make friends helped her navigate these difficult times. Cherie's story is equally compelling. A survivor of Hodgkin's lymphoma, sudden cardiac arrest, and a heart transplant, she spent over a decade isolated and bedridden. Cherie speaks candidly about the different types of isolation she experienced—from the void she felt during cancer treatment, to the inability to communicate while on life support, to the prolonged isolation of her recovery. Through it all, she learned the importance of self-compassion and developing a deep relationship with her body. I also share some of my own bumps in the road that led to experiences of isolation, including a difficult divorce and a battle with cancer. My  journey highlights how isolation can sometimes lead to profound self-discovery and spiritual growth. Three women. Three different stories. Perhaps one of the most important take aways is  the importance of living from the inside out, how it fosters compassion and greater connection. Tune in to hear these inspiring stories and gain valuable insights into our common journey. You won't want to miss this enlightening and heartfelt conversation.    What they're saying:   “This is a beautiful book about life, its imperfections, its challenges, and its joys. It is a book of hope and wisdom for all of us facing a bump in the road.” –Pragito Dove   “Pat has woven together beautiful stories of life setbacks that have been transformed into spiritual growth. This book is a gift and a must-read for souls experiencing pain and yearning for growth.”   –Gary Hensel   Learn more at   Follow Bump on: ➡️  ➡️  ➡️  ➡️  ➡️

The gift of suffering is that we are here to help other people who are suffering now. ~ Dr. Lise Deguire: Flashback Girl Few of us get through life without suffering. Yet few have suffered as our friend Lise Deguire, and even fewer have made a life-long committment to help others despite, or perhaps because of, that suffering.  Flashback Girl  At the age of four, Dr. Lise Deguire suffered third-degree burns on 65% of her body as the result of both maternal and corporate negligence. Against the odds, she lived through the trauma, beginning decades of treatment as a burn survivor. Dr. Deguire recounts her childhood with two narcissistic parents and their futile struggles to find happiness. Lise Deguire is an attractive woman. Her kind eyes belie what she has lived through. When Lise was four years old, her mother used a household solvent used to start a barbecue. It exploded, engulfing the entire porch in flames. Her mother ran through the fire and jumped in the lake to cool her burns. She left Lise standing in the midst of the inferno. Lise who was a beautiful, bubbly, child with blond curls suffered third degree burns over 65% of her body. The ensuing years would be round after round of brutal burn treatments and skin removal resulting in heavy scarring. Lise reflects back on her relationship with her mother and notes that:   "She was not emotionally equipped to be a mother. She just wasn't. And some mothers aren't... One of the things I've learned since my book has  come out is there is a lot of people who had mothers who were not very good at it."   Lise describes her parents as “outrageously flawed, gifted, and iconoclastic parents.” And as such, they were often wrapped up in their own lives and drama. Lise had numerous experiences that would have stopped most people. Perhaps most traumatically, her beloved brother committed suicide. That is what ultimately led her to a life dedicated to making a difference in mental health. "I think it made me a better person. And I help a lot of people now."   Coming Soon! The Book. Welcome to Episode #21 of Unbreakable Spirit.  In this episode you will hear the story of how Lise, at age 4< and her mother were severely burned in a household accident.  The fire left Lise with 3rd degree burns over 65% of her body.  Her lower lip was burned off.  She spent her most of her childhood in the hospital, undergoing painful surgeries.  When she was out of the hospital and returning to school, she experienced horrific bullying from classmates.  Her parents were narcissistic, neglectful and unavailable.  Her brother was her best parent and she adored him.  But, he too, was the victim of distant parents, and he committed suicide at the age of 19.  Lise will tell you that the loss of her brother was the worst trauma of all. But Lise was resilient.  She went on to heal, live a good life, and become a clinical psychologist, specializing in resiliency.  Dr. Lise created a powerful mnemonic, GOALS +M&M.  This mnemonic depicts the characteristics of resilient people, and if you don't feel you are resilient, you can work on shifting your mindset to become more resilient.  G=gratitude, O = optimism, A = active coping , L=love, S = social skills and M&M = meaning making.  In this podcast Dr. Lise guides us through each of these steps with concrete examples.  She also wrote the book, Flashback Girl: Lessons on Resilience From a Burn Survivor, which has won three awards.   Dr. Lise Deguire is a clinical psychologist in private practice for over 20 years. She is the award winning author of her memoir, Flashback Girl: Lessons on Resilience from a Burn Survivor. In this interview, Lise tells us about her story, and helps us learn how we can develop resilience through the chaos of life. Lise introduces herself and states her goal, which is to help people have “resilient and beautiful lives” after trauma 3:37: Lise describes her story, beginning October of 1967 – A family Barbeque gone wrong, resulting in Lise having 65% of her 5-year-old body covered by 3rd degree burns. “I was hideous.” A long and incredibly painful journey of recovery from burn care followed through Lise's childhood 5:21: There were many sources of chaos that came from the fire, and her family 6:01: Lise describes her parents as “Iconoclastic” and presents the definition here. She also describes the love she has for her brother. “He was my best parent.” Chaos happened from all sorts of different perspectives that day, and beyond 8:30: Lise has been through a lot of chaos…and…she has survived! Her book was written to deliver that message to everyone in the world who has been through horrendous trauma such as she has: • Neglectful Parents • Bullied • Years of medical trauma, being alone and scared • Multiple untimely deaths in her family due to suicide 9:18: “And yet here I am, many decades later. And I have the kind of life that most people would be like, ‘I'd like her life!'” 9:56: Lise describes some steps people can take to move through tragic times with limited resources • Having the hope that you can recover, it can get better and things can turn out okay • Pain is inevitable….suffering is optional • Finding resources other than parents (brother, grandparents, friends, plastic surgeon) to help • Love is in the world….you just need to look around for it 12:02: Lise shares her memories of the burn incident, including parental neglect, invalidation and pain 14:25: The origins of the “Flashback Girl” Book “It was my nickname, and I didn't know it.” The burn picture of her as a girl was on the Internet! 16:26: Lise explains the writing of her book. “I knew I would write my memoir, but I had to wait until my parents were both dead.” First Memories of chaos 1. The felt experience in going through the physical treatment and pain of burns 2. The dissolution of my family 18:47: Here's how Lise found the “seeds of resilience” within herself at an early age..and… was able to help them grow, with the help of others, and therapy. She also credits herself as being gifted with “reasonably intelligent,” which helped her out. 21:03: Making it through school. “It was really hard.” “I was the most hideous child you had ever seen, and kids could be quite cruel.” It was the strangers who didn't really know her that were the most hurtful. 24:06: How Lise found Resilience: GOALS + M&M • Gratitude • Optimism • Active Coping • Love • Social Skills • Meaning Making 28:23: Lise takes you through her Website at www.lisedeguire.com and her book, “Flashback Girl” Awards: 2020 Nautalis 2021 Next Generation 2021 Living Now Book Award – Silver 30:34: We talk about the audio version of her book. “It's my oldest daughter who narrates the book.” Check out her Blog, and professional speaking engagements with her riveting topics, such as bullying, suicide, burn survival, trauma and more! I’m happy to introduce you to today’s guest Dr. Lise Deguire a clinical psychologist and author of a beautiful and inspirational new book called Flashback Girl: Lessons on Resilience From a Burn Survivor. As I told her in our conversation, Lise is one of my new heroes, and not just for the reasons that you might expect.   In her book, and in our conversation, it becomes clear very quickly that her story can help many people in many different ways. While the events of her life are highly specific, many of the losses (both traditional and invisible) are universal and helping so many people. As Lise mentioned in our conversation, she believes that it is through honest sharing of what we’ve been through that we can connect with and help others best. We talk about her experience as a 4-year-old girl that changed the course of her life forever, as well as the many other losses that happened as a direct or indirect result of that moment. It’s these moments that so many of us can relate to, hard and painful relationships with our parents, the loss of a loved one, teasing and bullying, and even a first marriage that wasn’t right for the long term.  She openly shares that while the people we want and expect to show up for us won’t always be able to, it’s important to notice that there are so many others that are. We also spoke about the idea of a Thriver mindset and whether or not it is something that we are born with or something you can train yourself and learn. She tends to believe it’s a little of both.    “It happens sometimes that the people we think are supposed to be there for us are not going to be. They can’t be, they won’t be, they are dead. But there are also so many others that want to be there for us if we can let them, it’s important that we notice them too.”  ~ Dr. Lise Deguire   Dr. Deguire is not just inspirational, she has this kindness and compassion toward the human condition. I felt it as I immersed myself in her work and it became even more strong when I connected with her in person for this interview. I’m certain that you will feel it to when you listen to our conversation. My hope is that after listening to Lise’s story, you will get the courage you need to Thrive in your life as well. I’d love to know what you think. Please share it with your friends and family, and be sure to tag me if you share it on social media so that I can say thank you. "I am four years old in that photo, half-naked and burned all over. I am propped up into a sitting position. My hair, which had been honey blonde and bouncy with waves, sprawls in a dark, stringy mess. My chest is completely covered with tight, raw bands of scars.  My right arm, also constricted by scars, is attached to my torso by contractures. My left wrist contracts in as well. You can see my tiny right ear and my nose unscarred, still sweet and untouched. The lower half of my face, however, is obliterated. My mouth gapes wide open because I have no lower lip to close it with. Fire has devoured my lip, chin and neck. The remaining skin tightly draws my face down into my chest, like a reverse face lift, preventing any emotional expression. The black band in the photo covering my eyes was to keep me from being recognized. If you could see my eyes, though, I would have been trying to smile as best I could. I was a good girl, and I aimed to please. Effort were paid to keep my tiny face in profile and to hide my eyes. But burn scarring is as unique as fingerprints; no two burned people get burned exactly the same way. It was clearly me. This was one of several stunning revelations I uncovered as I began to investigate the fire that nearly killed me a half-century ago."https://www.lisedeguire.com/Flashback Girl Book
