Only 53% of voters say they're proud of the country, and that number lands different when you're staring down America's 250th birthday. I open by reading the Declaration of Independence, then I get blunt about what it means to be free, to be grateful, and to choose growth when life is heavy. This is a July 4th mindset reset with teeth, not a Hallmark speech. We talk through the pride gap and why it feels like the country is splitting into different realities. I break down capitalism vs communism in simple terms, why definitions matter, and why “opportunity” is not just a word, it's the engine behind the American dream. I also pull in what I'm seeing around the World Cup and at the border: people from other countries recognize the value of America fast, even when we act numb to it.Then I bring it home with real life: small-town Maine, banners honoring local military, fairgrounds lined with flags, and the kind of blue-collar patriotism you can feel in your chest. I share what it's like building Loud Proud American from scratch, and the full-circle moment of vending at New Hampshire Motor Speedway and spotting strangers already wearing my gear. If you've been chasing a dream, this one is for you. In the summer of 2000, NASCAR faced a massive safety firestorm. But while many drivers pleaded for change following the tragic crashes of Adam Petty and Kenny Irwin at New Hampshire Motor Speedway, Dale Earnhardt Sr. stood his ground, famously calling out the "candy asses" who wanted to slow the cars down. In this episode of Firestorm: 2000-2001 -- The Years That Forever Changed NASCAR, we dive deep into the intense NASCAR safety debate of 2000. We uncover the behind-the-scenes culture clash between The Intimidator's old-school macho persona and the growing push for safety from drivers like Jeff Burton and Brett Bodine. Why did Earnhardt despise restrictor plates ("Take them damn things off and let her rip!"), refuse to wear full-face helmets, and mock the HANS device? We explore the fierce resistance to modernizing stock car safety, the secret injuries drivers hid to keep racing, and NASCAR's early, desperate attempts to test energy-absorbing walls and Styrofoam blocks before Dean Sicking's game-changing invention of the SAFER barrier. What you'll learn in this episode: • The fallout from the tragic 2000 NASCAR deaths of Adam Petty and Kenny Irwin • Dale Earnhardt's unfiltered thoughts on restrictor plates, the HANS device, and full-face helmets • The intense garage divide between old-school traditionalists and new safety advocates • NASCAR's experimental (and sometimes rudimentary) soft wall tests • The origin story of the SAFER barrier Learn more about your ad choices. Annick Magac and “Driven to Ride” host Mark Long grew up in different parts of the country, but they share common ground. They both live to ride and ride to live, as the saying goes, and they both have a strong sense of community. What's more, Magac founded her own motorcycle-oriented podcast, “Féroce,” which, as its title suggests, inspires listeners to “live fiercely.”No surprise, Magac has a competitive streak. In her 20s, she road-raced a Grand Prix-style Honda RS125 in American Historic Racing Motorcycle Association and Championship Cup Series events at various East Coast tracks, including historic New Hampshire Motor Speedway. “It was amazing,” she says, reminiscing about the diminutive two-stroke. “I think that may be the most exotic thing I've owned.”In this episode, Magac offers tips for riders who use motorcycles as their main form of transportation. Top of the list, she says, is warmth and safety. “I have heated grips. I have a connect for a heated vest. I don't fool around anymore with being cold. And I always wear gear. That's my commitment to my family and my commitment to myself in case things go sideways.” Check. Team Penske veteran and recent Cup Series winning Crew Chief Brian Wilson joins Davey Segal this week (6:25) to reflect on the No. 2 teams triumph at Gateway a couple weeks ago and why the win was a validation of the process he and Austin Cindric have been trusting together. He also shares what Roger Penske told him after the win and the gains that Ford Performance and Penske have seemingly made in recent weeks. Wilson details his 21 illustrious years at the company, starting out as a shock specialist before working his way into an engineer role, winning 50 (and counting) times along the way, garnering multiple championships and working with countless drivers. He also touches on his start in racing growing up in Michigan, why his father's influence loomed over him and helped get him started in the sport, why his driving career was short lived and memories working for Frank Kimmel's ARCA team as a 21-year-old fresh out of college. Wilson also explains what makes he and Austin Cindric work so well together, if anybody ever confuses him with some *other* famous Brian Wilson's out there, previews New Hampshire Motor Speedway and why he said some may be right to write the No. 2 team off come playoff time, but they may surprise some people. Davey also recaps the Cup Series' inaugural trip to Iowa Speedway, Martin Truex Jr.'s impending retirement and Papa Segal pays homage to a legend of Le Mans.
After another solid weekend stacking our chip count in Iowa, the NASCAR cup series heads to New England for another short flat track, New Hampshire Motor Speedway. On this episode we talk about one of the favorites on the Moneyline and the manufacturers pick that makes the most sense. Will it make the most money? From there we talk about multiple finishing position plays including TWO picks for the Caesars Over/Under plays that are quite surprising. We wrap things up with three matchups including another team bet since those have been working out so well for us lately!
