In this week's episode, Kyle Morin shares the journey that took him from substitute teaching in Colorado to leading a charter school through the pandemic and now shaping education policy with a practitioner's lens. Kyle reflects on his teaching experience in Taiwan, how international education systems compare to the U.S., and the leadership challenges he faced during one of the most disruptive periods in modern education. We also explore why it's essential for educators to have a voice in policy conversations—and how decision-makers can better support those on the frontlines of education. About Kyle Morin: Kyle Morin is an experienced educator and education policy professional with over 15 years of experience in teaching, education leadership, and policy. His career has spanned both his home state of Colorado and international settings, including Taiwan, where he taught as a Fulbright Fellow before later working at a private school. Currently, Kyle is an education policy resident with ExcelinEd, where he is expanding his expertise in education policy to bridge the gap between practitioners and policymakers in a state agency. Kyle holds two B.A. degrees in Elementary Education and History and an M.P.A. in Education Policy from the University of Colorado-Denver. While in graduate school, he co-authored On the Road of Innovation: Colorado's Charter School Law Turns 20 as part of a policy internship. His proudest professional accomplishment was stepping into a principal role during COVID-19, leading his school through the complexities of the pandemic as a first-year administrator. This experience reinforced his core belief that education is most effective when schools and families work together. Philipstown resident sees program frozen If things had gone as planned, Sophia Ptacek would be making the final arrangements for her Fulbright fellowship, a nine-month stint working on industrial decarbonization and air pollution reduction for a Colombian government ministry. But because the Trump administration paused funding for her program, the 28-year-old is living with her parents in Philipstown and checking her email. "I'm holding on to hope that it could still happen," said Ptacek, who grew up in Garrison and Cold Spring and attended the Poughkeepsie Day School. "But I am in limbo. It's sad." Ptacek last year completed a dual master's program at Yale University in environmental management and public health. She also was selected for a Fulbright Public Policy Fellowship, part of a U.S. State Department international exchange and education program suspended by the White House in February. Founded in 1946, the Fulbright program typically awards 9,000 scholarships each year to promote international cooperation and an exchange of ideas. "The freeze on State Department grant programs threatens the survival of study abroad and international exchange programs that are essential to U.S. economic and national security," said Fanta Aw, executive director and CEO of NAFSA: Association of International Educators, based in Washington, D.C. "Halting inbound and outbound exchanges shuts the United States off from a vital flow of ideas, innovation and global understanding and influence, creating a vacuum that could easily be filled by competing nations." Ptacek wants to help reduce air pollution in Colombia. "There's quite a lot of manufacturing and heavy industry, and as a result, a lot of air pollution that has public health impacts for communities near these plants," she said. The details of her fellowship were still being confirmed, but Ptacek was scheduled to travel to Bogotá to work for the ministry of health, environment or energy and mines. Last month she received an email telling her to "pause making travel arrangements" because of "ongoing administrative issues affecting the transfer of funds from the U.S. State Department to Fulbright implementing partners." Last week she received a second email informing her of layoffs at the Institute for International Education, the organization that administers her program. As to what happens next, "I have no clue," said Ptacek. Because of the uncertainty, she has taken a job with Turner Construction helping clients figure out how they can implement energy-efficiency measures, electrification and building decarbonization, she said. She'd also like to work in maritime decarbonization, moving ships and ports away from fossil fuels to mitigate climate change and reduce air pollution.

We've wanted to talk to writer Sarah Menkedick for a long time, but we weren't sure how we could make our conversation fit into this season's focus on childbirth- until she wrote the essay Why the Left Must Reclaim Birth on her Substack, Terms of Endearment, in late 2024. In her essay, which Kaitlin and Sarah explore in their conversation we share with you today, Sarah posits that, in order to make progress in our patriarchal society, the feminist left must embrace motherhood and the experiences of women who cherish identities and lives that have typically been co-opted by the right. Motherhood could be an opportunity for us to connect, to commune, and to find commonality even when we think we are so far apart. In a time that can often feel divided, exclusive, and judgmental, Sarah brings an energy and curiosity to how, potentially, we can find a path forward together.More about Sarah: Sarah's a writer whose work explores motherhood, feminism, and the human experience. She is the author of Homing Instincts: Early Motherhood on a Midwestern Farm and Ordinary Insanity: Fear and the Silent Crisis of Motherhood in America. She has lived between the U.S. and Mexico for over 15 years, giving her a unique lens on American culture, and her writing has appeared in Harper's, The New York Times, The Guardian, and more. She's also a Fulbright Fellow and a three-time Best American Essays nominee. She currently splits her time between Pittsburgh and Oaxaca, Mexico. In this conversation, Sarah and Kaitlin discuss:The political and philosophical implications of her essay, Why the Left Must Reclaim BirthThe paradox of feminist identity and traditional femininityHow motherhood can serve as a bridge in today's divided political climateThe role of activism and policy in shaping a more inclusive futureHer experiences living between Pittsburgh and Oaxaca, and how they inform her workAlso referenced in the podcast:Naomi Klein Doppleganger: A Trip into the Mirror WorldPlease subscribe wherever you get your podcasts and give us a rating. All Home Care Matters and our host, Lance A. Slatton were honored to welcome Alfredo Botello Author of Spin Cycle Notes from a Reluctant Caregiver as guest to the show.     About Alfredo Botello:     Alfredo Botello is a novelist and screenwriter who has worked on projects ranging from the indie Sundance Global Short La Revolucion De Iguodala to the studio tent pole Fast and Furious 9. His debut novel, 180 Days, has garnered multiple literary awards. He is a Fulbright Fellow in architecture and a Nicholl Fellow in screenwriting. In addition to screenplays and the novels, he contributed a chapter to the Amazon bestseller Wellness     Through Words, and has written for The San Francisco Examiner Magazine, Metropolis, Diablo, Surface, The Utne Reader, Style, The East Bay Express, and The Monthly. Botello co-owns a cocktail bar in downtown Oakland, Little Bird Bar, and at home dotes on his two Corgis, George and Dotty.     About Spin Cycle Notes from a Reluctant Caregiver:     High school math teacher Ezra Pavic is having a hard time. His wife left him, his son barely tolerates him, and now he's being blindsided by something he never saw coming: the emotional spin cycle of parenting a parent. His mother Irene has dementia, and it's exhausting. Caring for her is a constant source of frustration, resentment, and guilt. Lots of guilt. Overwhelmed by it all, Ezra opens a strip-mall school to help others—and himself—become better caregivers. As he learns to handle the personalities of his nine misfit students, Ezra must also navigate the complex feelings he has toward his mother. It doesn't help that she adores his do-nothing slacker brother.     But Ezra hasn't told his students that he also has an agenda beyond becoming a more compassionate caregiver. And, it turns out, so does one of his students. Ezra confides the entire tale to his childhood friend Danny as he attempts to sort it all out and find room in his heart again for compassion and love.

In the book, as well as this episode, Joy interweaves her own experiences of domestic abuse and the bureaucracy surrounding Title IX with Soviet and Russian history and examines gender and violence norms within the profession of history and academia writ large. Within the context of the #MeToo movement, Joy reflects on the enduring struggle that victims of abuse face due to the common propensity to amplify and repeat the narratives that are spread by perpetrators of violence. Informed by her extensive research on the history and application of Title IX—including the procedural tribulations of her own case—Joy intertwines the past and present and challenges the postmodernist approach to historical methodology with regard to truth narrativity and meaning. Joy concludes with the sentiment that historians can never be truly objective. Instead, they must expose their positionality and the personal, political, and social factors shaping their narrative about the past. If you are experiencing abuse or are concerned about someone you know, call the National Domestic Violence Hotline (1-800-799-7233) or visit http://www.thehotline.org. She received a PhD in History from the University of California, Berkeley, and was a Fulbright Fellow in Russia and a Max Weber Fellow at the European University Institute in Florence, Italy. She has also worked as a reporter in Moscow and Warsaw. Her first book, A Survivor's Education: Women, Violence, and the Stories We Don't Tell (PublicAffairs, 2024), is an investigative memoir about abuse and the tension between narrative and evidence in understanding the past. Max Kaspar is finding a new kind of normal in post-war Munich, Germany. He has his club, he has his customers, and he has his brother's ear. In a purple box. Now Max is on a mission to save his younger brother, who is on a mission to save someone the Soviets have and the Americans want. Allies and enemies, no one can be trusted. Bottom line: Lines of Deception is for you if you like seat of your pants thrillers woven into the complicated world of post-war II Europe.Strengths of the story. The post-WWII setting takes center stage. This isn't a story generically set in 1949 or in one city but is a thriller woven through a variety cities and countries, occupied by multiple allied countries. Miles are crossed on trains, in trucks, and on foot. The food is lackluster, the PTSD rampant. Yes, Lines of Deception has an incredibly rich setting. This is the fourth book in the Kaspar Brothers series. As such, both Max and his brother Harry are well developed characters. Max leads the storytelling in this one. He stays true to his nature from start to finish. The side characters, good and bad, are well created and easy to keep track of. Max, Harry, and friends are constantly in danger of being discovered. Max drives the story until he achieves his goal of finding Harry. The baton of the decision making lead then passes to Harry. Together Max and Harry do drive the story. If at any point they made different decisions, the story would have ended. At the end, looking from back to front, the logic holds. This is a missing person type thriller without the elements of “switchbacks” that can weaken logic in political thrillers. I appreciated that at the end of the book, Max and Harry recapped the logic line, making me a very happy reader.Where the story fell short of ideal: I didn't find much to pick on here. Perhaps thriller readers who prefer fire fights, explosions, and stunt people might find this one a bit staid. I, myself, did not. The thrills were just right for the time period. The Lines of Deception was released from Open Road Media Mystery & Thriller and is promoted by Partners In Crime Tours and is available from AMAZON LINK and other book retailers.About Steve AndersonSteve Anderson is the author of numerous novels, mostly historical thrillers about gutsy underdogs. In an earlier life he earned an MA in history and was a Fulbright Fellow in Germany. Day jobs have included busy waiter, Associated Press rookie, and language instructor. He's also written historical nonfiction and translated bestselling German novels. Lines of Deception is fourth in his Kaspar Brothers series but can be read as a standalone. Today, we're tackling Russell's thought-provoking question about Jesus Christ with Religious Scholar and Certified Ashtanga teacher, Dr. John Campbell. As the conversation turns to "Are we searching for our own personal Jesus in yoga teachers?" Harmony Slater, John, and Russell explore the tendency to idolize instructors, seeking external validation and solutions rather than cultivating our own inner power. This episode will challenge your assumptions and open doors to a more authentic yoga practice. Key Takeaways: Beyond Black and White Thinking: John Campbell critiques the pressure for strong opinions: "Everybody always trying to dumb everything down...you know, you have a black and white opinion about this or that..." The conversation explores the need for critical thinking and a nuanced approach to yoga teachers and transformation. The Simulation of Awareness: John delves into the overwhelming nature of information overload: "We have this constant narration machine of infinite complexity in our minds...this is exactly who I am..." He argues that true transformation comes from cultivating presence and inner peace, not getting caught up in external narratives. Yoga and the Cult of Personality: John observes, "[We] find ourselves in positions of great authority, which then turn out to be real shit-heels." Harmony Slater adds, "We're all doing that, right? With our interpersonal struggles." This conversation explores how easily we project unrealistic expectations onto teachers, potentially hindering our own growth. Presence and Authenticity: Despite the potential pitfalls, the episode acknowledges the power of yoga. John Campbell concludes that yoga, when approached mindfully, can be a powerful tool for cultivating presence, compassion, and a deeper sense of self. Now it's your turn! Ready to dive deeper? It is often said that “Russia is a country with an unpredictable past.” Such distortions of history can lead to trouble, as the world witnessed last year when Vladimir Putin justified his invasion of Ukraine as an attempt to “denazify” the neighboring country—one with a Jewish president who lost relatives in the Holocaust. As Megan Buskey writes in her new memoir, “Ukraine Is Not Dead Yet: A Family Story of Exile and Return”: “How could a country know itself unless it knew all the things it had been?”Lawfare Managing Editor Tyler McBrien sat down with Megan, a nonfiction writer and former Fulbright Fellow to Ukraine, who has studied and written about the country for two decades. They discussed her book, the use and abuse of history in Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine, and the role of family histories in countering those false narratives. They also talked about the best way to get a Polish archive to give you the documents you need. His work has been featured at SXSW, on CNN with Lisa Ling, in the documentary 'The Mask You Live In', and a documentary about  "American Masculinity". He is a Fulbright Fellow, a Rotary Fellow, a Stanford d.school Fellow, and a 4x Tedx Speaker Ashanti has been working with youth for over 18 years as the Founder and Executive Director of the Ever Forward Club (EFC), a non-profit organization dedicated to seeing marginalized students graduate high school by providing them emotional tools and mental health support. Formerly an engineer, Ashanti found his passion while tutoring struggling students from African-American and Latino communities, and seeing 40% of them, heart-breakingly, give up. By fulfilling deeper emotional needs to feel safe, seen and heard, The Ever Forward Club has helped 100% of its student members graduate high school. We have all heard the famous Gandhi quote, “Be the change you want to see in the world.”  If I'm being honest, there are so many times I look at something that I know is wrong in the world and say, I wish that was different, or I wish someone would do something about that.  What I love most about Ashanti is that he is actually doing the work. He saw a problem, a need, and then did something. And then he kept doing. So much so that his work has gone from passion to mission to movement. It is people like Ashanti who remind me that “we are the people we've been waiting for.” That the things that we want to change are up to us AND in OUR POWER to change.
