End of life planning looks different for Black and Indigenous families. It's more casual, more informal and in most cases involves food and historically happens around our tables at Sunday dinner. Sunday Dinner conversations not only serve as social gatherings but are imperative for Black and Indigenous families because they serve as a medium for opportunities to discuss preferences, desires and individual needs and wishes for end-of-life treatment, funeral and burial planning. Each person has their own unique “diet” so to speak when thinking about these vitally important matters. Most importantly, Sunday dinners have the power to ensure that information is verbally communicated amongst loved ones in the hopes that further steps can be taken to create solid end of life plans. In this episode of The Death and Greif Talk Podcast I am joined by Ashley Johnson and Dr. Elisha Hall.  Ashley Johnson is an alumni of the Univ of Florida, and a trained End of Life Doula. She currently serves as the President of National End of Life Doula Alliance. Her death care career was inspired by growing up in a low socio-economic neighborhood that lacked advocacy on how to deal with end-of-life practices. With more than a decade in the death care industry ranging from Forensic Anthropology to whole body donation, she launched Loyal Hands, an End-of-Life consulting agency.   Dr. Hall restores African and Indigenous healing legacies. As an impact strategist and systems thinker, Dr. Hall is the founder of the African and Indigenous Knowledge Institute (AIKI), a local consulting organization that develops institutions through interactive educational platforms. In 2020, Dr. Hall received his Ph.D. in Policy Studies in Urban Education at the University of Illinois (Chicago). His research centers on how storytelling can heal youth and adults, especially when used as self-edification and character development. With over 20 years of food equity and community organizing experience, he fuses political education with public health justice frameworks to provide restoration for African and Indigenous communities. Currently, he is the African American Engagement Director at Compassion & Choices. About the Death & Grief Talk Podcast Death and grief are sacred aspects of our human journey that we all witness, honor, and process uniquely. Guest: Christine Callander, MSN, APRN, FNP-C   From the earliest age, NP Callander loved playing doctor with her dolls and stuffed animals. However, after looking at many career opportunities, Christine felt called into the healthcare field. She first graduated as a paramedic and then graduated from the University of Texas in Arlington with a Bachelor of Science in Nursing. Following an exemplary career as an emergency room pediatric nurse at Texas Children's Hospital in Houston, TX, she graduated with honors with her Master of Science in Nursing as a Nurse Practitioner from Texas Tech. Throughout her career as a Nurse and Nurse Practitioner, she has always sought to provide the care she expects for her own family. It's this highly individualized treatment and evidence-based medicine with a holistic focus that NP Callander offers to each patient at Pure Health Texas.   In addition to her calling as a healthcare provider, NP Callander is a loving wife to her husband, Shawn, and a devoted mother to their three wonderful children, Brenna, Case, and Ainsley. When not in the office caring for patients, you can find her exercising, watching her kids participate in numerous sports, attending church, or volunteering at Young Life & Sky Ranch Summer Camps.   Christine@PurehealthTexas.com Office number: 972-332-1930   “Gut health” is a huge component of our physical and emotional well being - many issues that manifest themselves in other areas - including acne - are tied to our gut issues! In addition, some of our food allergies can be traced back to our gut health.   Chef Shaun with Sage Dining does a great job of taking several dietary issues and food allergies into consideration in preparing all the selections for the PCA cafeteria.   How do we know if our students are struggling with gluten or dairy? You might see a difference in their temperament/behavior or it might be a physical outbreak. Food allergies can change as we age or different situations can alter the way we absorb foods.   Stress and anxiety are issues affecting a large percentage of our students - one out of three students struggle with anxiety. Mental health is such an important attribute of our lives - everything flows from the brain downward. How can we better protect the mental health of our children?! Look for your kids being overly tired, sleeplessness, snippy attitudes - is this hormonally related or stress activated?   Bedtime routines are important to help get the best sleep possible. Blue light from iPads or cell phones actually keep us awake even when we're tired! Don't let your child use their mobile phone as their alarm clock! Don't plug your phones to charge near your head at night!   Try to protect “family dinner time” and use that time for good conversations. Car rides are also great places to engage in meaningful conversation! Ask questions about their day, about how they feel about things and different situations, etc. Special shout out to Jared Wood for allowing us to use his music - check him out at JaredWoodMusic!

Andrew Greer offers the thought that in our efforts to become more diverse, maybe we have become homogenized than we intend. We must speak, act, think the same in order to be heard, and humans are not designed for this. We are created to have relationships and exchange thoughts in a manner that is enriching to one another... but do we have the habit of putting God in a box that looks strangely more like our own opinions and judge people from that standard? What doors would open and who would we meet if we pursued God for how big he is and followed how Jesus taught us to live with each other?   As we chat about a recent project Andrew has produced, an album tribute to the late Rich Mullins, maybe that's what made Rich so relatable. In this episode, Andrew talks about Rich's legacy and the process of recording "Bellsburg." Andrew also shares about other projects that strangely seem to revolve around conversations, including "Empty Stage" and "Dinner Conversations with Mark Lowry and Andrew Greer."

If you've ever been at a loss for how to spark dinner table conversation with your kids, I want to offer a little help. All this week I'm sharing provocative quotes that can spark conversations about the Christian faith and things that really matter. Here's a quote worth discussing from Tim Keller: “Anything that is functionally more important to you than God is an idol. Anything you love more than God – even a good thing like a spouse or a child or social cause – is a false God. Until you can identify your idols you cannot understand yourself. Until you turn from them you can't know and walk with God.” Parents, our culture throws all kinds of idols at our kids. Idols demand time, attention, and allegiance. But they never can fill the hole in the soul that can only be filled by the one true God. Talk with your kids about the idols that compete for their hearts. Expose their lies and share stories of how you've been manipulated and hurt by idols. Teach them to worship only the almighty God!

Welcome Grown Ups! This week I have a new guest on the show who took a little more convincing than usually to get her to join me but I managed to bring the small extrovert out. Today I welcome Jen the blogger who also happens to be a huge introvert. We sat down and I asked her some questions about what it's like for her to be an introvert in her everyday life with friends, family, work, and pretty much everything else. She also opened up about starting her blog and what that experience is like being an introvert. Some people are looking forward to having these conversations while others are understandably anxious. How do we steer these conversations to actually achieve something helpful instead of starting fights and making everyone uncomfortable? What kind of language do we use or, more importantly, not use during these conversations? How do we de-escalate potentially sticky situations?
