Running water. Sanitation systems. Electricity. A car to drive to the store. Enough food to feed your family. These are all things that we've likely taken for granted at one time or another — and they're things that so many in the world live without every day. As part of our Holiday Giving Back Episode series, we talk with the VP of a charitable organization whose mission is to eliminate that level of extreme poverty worldwide. Mark Lutz is the Senior Vice President of Global Philanthropy at Opportunity International. He joined the organization in 1986 and grew private annual revenue from $1 million to more than $40 million. Mark grew up in South Africa with his missionary parents. Living for 20 years under apartheid shaped him to become an advocate for justice. He's also the author of “UnPoverty: Rich Lessons from the Working Poor.” Tune into the full conversation for more on Opportunity International's unique method of making a difference in impoverished people's lives, personal stories from Mark's book that display the valuable lessons he's learned from those living in poverty, success stories from the entrepreneurs Mark's organization has worked with, and a lot more. Here's a Glimpse of What You'll Learn: How growing up in apartheid South Africa was the “germ” that later became Mark's career in the nonprofit world More about the lightbulb moment Mark had in which he realized he could leverage other people's money to fight for justice and an end to poverty The definition of a “micro-loan”, how Opportunity International recipients typically use that kind of loan, and how those small loans snowball into bigger chances at breaking out of poverty Mark shares a story from his book involving a group of women from India and the valuable lessons that they taught him How much Opportunity International money has been loaned out to people in need — and how many individuals have been helped by those What one woman in the Philippines did with a $50 loan and what Mark learned from that story More info about what happens with donations to Opportunity International and how bank partnerships help 10x the impact of those donations Why today's level of poverty can be the next “Berlin Wall” The power of a simple $30 donation The important distinction between giving money and giving a loan, and why that's related to increasing people's dignity Resources Mentioned in This Episode: Opportunity International website UnPoverty.org (Mark's website) “UnPoverty: Rich Lessons from the Working Poor” by Mark Lutz Buy a copy of “Lost at CEO: An Entrepreneur's Guide to Strategy” by Carl J. Significantly fewer Canadians intend to give to charity this holiday season and those who do, plan to give less. Inflation, surging demand, and falling donations have combined to create a perfect storm for Canada

Giving looks different across Wards 7 and 8 as community members support and uplift one another this holiday season.
It may be the giving season, but with the financial pressures a lot of us are facing, it may be a tough one for charities. A recent survey says fewer than half of Atlantic Canadians will be donating this holiday season and almost four-in-ten plan to give less. The irony is that the inflation crisis has made more of us reliant on charitable services. Imagine Canada says charities and nonprofits receive 40 percent of their donations in the last six to eight weeks of the year. CEO and President Bruce MacDonald offers his thoughts on how you can help get more support for those agencies so they can keep on giving.
We talk with Chef Elyssa Kaplan, culinary operations lead at World Central Kitchen, about how she came to join the charity organization and her work feeding people in need all over the world.
Do you plan on giving to charity this holiday season? How do you decide where to donate your time and money?

There are many facets to the core concepts of the holidays, but it seems that we often get stuck on presents. Of course, there are different kinds of gifts, such as home-made or extremely heart-felt ones, but many of us buy presents out of obligation. We would argue this is part of what makes this time of year so stressful. Today T and Gen would like to explore the concept of gift giving and how it ties to the capitalist nature of society.

As we approach of the end of the year we start thinking more and more about holiday giving. Miracle on 32nd Street and White Christmas are once again played on our big screens, bringing warm feelings of togetherness. But that's about our feelings. A big part of our holiday giving at this stage of our life is for our adult children, who are all launched. (thankfully!) We love to add some creativity to our giving, but also practicality. What will they truly use and enjoy? Also, what is a reasonable budget? Full Article here: https: GoalsForYourLife.com/blog/holiday-giving
As we bring down the Halloween decorations, it's time to start thinking about the remaining holidays in the year. Finding the right gift is always a challenge, and this year we thought we'd give you a chance to think about it early. The conversation flows from the “stuff” on our list, to the things that aren't really things, but that might bring more hope and joy than any box with a bow. Franklin agreed, but figured Christmas was months away. He forgot about the promise until he received a call back around Thanksgiving asking about the gifts.Franklin asked his friend the late Pastor Ross Rhoads of Calvary Church of Charlotte to see if he could help with the need. A Sunday shortly afterward, Pastor Rhoads demonstrated for his congregation how to fill a shoebox with simple gifts and encouraged them to include a letter to the child as well. Within weeks, the church had 11,000 shoeboxes lining their hallways. Due to their generosity and additional gifts from Canada, Samaritan's Purse sent 28,000 shoebox gifts to children in the Balkans that Christmas. Every year since, Samaritan's Purse has collected shoebox gifts filled with toys, school supplies, and hygiene items for children around the world. Since 1993, more than 178 million children in more than 150 countries have received an Operation Christmas Child shoebox. The project delivers not only the joy of what, for many kids, is their first gift ever, but also gives them a tangible expression of God's love.Tens of thousands of volunteers from local churches around the world partner with us to present the Gospel of Jesus Christ at festive outreach events where children are surprised with these shoebox gifts.Support the show (https://directionchurch.churchcenter.com/giving)

In our family, we know the importance of helping others. Our kids have been exposed this their whole lives through various fundraisers and activities. They’ve walked 5k, climbed up stairs and seen me go on humanitarian trips. When Heifer International reached out to me about partnering for a post about giving it was easy to say yes. Plus, I had never had anyone ask me to take a “goat selfie” before A photo posted by C.C. Chapman (@cc_chapman) on Nov 29, 2016 at 5:30am PST Heifer International’s mission is to work with communities to end world hunger and poverty and to care for the Earth. They do this through empowering families by providing them livestock, agricultural training, tools and education. This turns poverty stricken families into to small-scale farmers. My daughter has visited their farm in Western Massachusetts several times (I have yet to be able to) where she learned about all of their programs. She got to experience first hand what it is like to farm, live and thrive in the areas of the world where they work and help. You should visit Heifer.org to learn more. With my children both being in High School, I thought I’d use this post to inspire something new. I told them I wanted each of them to research and present to me a charity that they’d like to donate to this year and I’d give them each $50 to donate. It had to be an organization that we haven’t given to in the past and I wanted them to be able to answer the question of why they chose them. On my birthday in a few weeks I’m going to ask them to tell my wife and I who they chose and then I’ll make the donation. I wonder who’ll they choose. I personally like Heifer’s model of Passing on the Gift. This means families share the training they receive, and pass on the first female offspring of their livestock to another family. This extends the impact of the original gift, allowing a once impoverished family to become donors and full participants in improving their communities. Plus, how much fun is it that you can buy a goat, water buffalo or other livestock and help a family in need? As you can see, I’ve learned to like goats since my daughter loves them. By 2020, Heifer aims to help 4 million families achieve living incomes. This income will allow them to send their children to school, feed themselves adequately across every month of the year; and have proper housing, water, hygiene and other essential resources. There are plenty ways to give to those in needs, but I love when you can directly know where your money is going and how it is helping. I encourage you to learn more about Heifer International and the work they do to improve the world around us. I hope this post helps put you into the giving spirit a bit and that you and your family consider giving in some way during the Holidays. Disclosure – This post was produced with support from Heifer International. All opinions are, of course, my own.
