Yinz Are Good shares the *good* news going on out there and celebrates the good people who are making it happen: The people who are lifting others up, who are taking care of their neighbors, the people who are saying, “What can I do today to make our world a better place?”.Our guest today reached out to us from the other side of the country - from Idaho, to be exact - and boy, are we glad he did. Let's start with this: our guest's work has been recognized on Mike Rowe's Returning the Favor, CNN Heroes (where he was a Top 10 finalist!), NBC Nightly News with Lester Holt, Good Morning America, The Today Show, People Magazine, and even American Ninja Warrior. His name is Luke Mickelson and his work is the nonprofit, Sleep in Heavenly Peace (SHP).What began as a single act of kindness has grown into a global nonprofit with a simple but powerful mission: “No kid sleeps on the floor in our town.”. Today, SHP has more than 400 chapters across 47 U.S. states and 4 countries. They build beds for kids who need them and wait until you hear how many beds they have made to date…it is astounding. Tressa had the great joy and honor of chatting with Luke via Zoom (she couldn't quite make it over to Idaho). This is a conversation about taking care of one another, about how listening to your inner voice - your gut - can propel you to new and unexpected chapters of your life, and about how saying “yes” to unexpected opportunities can literally change the lives of strangers. Families all over the country, including right here in Massachusetts, are struggling to find proper beds for their children to sleep in each night. Almost 15 years after helping a neighbor in his home state of Idaho, Luke Mickelson vowed to ensure as many children as possible would be able to sleep comfortably at night, and he's teamed up with volunteers around the country to build hundreds of thousands of beds. However, he says they need more help here in New England. He joins Nichole this week to tell his story, talk about their efforts, and share information about how you can start a chapter to help kids sleep soundly.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
In Episode 144 of the Charity Charge Show, we sit down with a man who is quite literally building a better night's sleep for children across the globe. Luke Mickelson, the founder of Sleep in Heavenly Peace (SHP) Beds, joins us to share a story that started in a cold Idaho garage and has since ignited a national movement to end "child bedlessness."From a "Two-by-Four" Realization to a National MovementLuke's journey didn't start in a boardroom; it started with a simple observation in Kimberly, Idaho. While looking for ways to get local youth away from their screens and into service, Luke discovered a family in his own backyard whose children were sleeping on the floor."It hit me up the side of the head like a two-by-four," Luke recalls. "I thought, 'You gotta be kidding me. What are they sleeping on? The floor?'"What began as a one-time project to build a few beds has scaled into a massive operation. Today, SHP has over 400 chapters across 47 states and four countries. In 2026 alone, they are on track to build nearly 100,000 beds.Innovation in the Nonprofit Model: Your Mission is Your FundraiserOne of the most profound takeaways from Luke's strategy is how SHP flipped the traditional nonprofit funding model on its head. Instead of diverting energy into "spaghetti feeds" or gala dinners, SHP makes the mission itself the revenue driver through Corporate Team Building. The Problem: Corporations want to give back but struggle to find scalable, organized, and impactful volunteer opportunities. The Solution: SHP provides "turnkey" build events. Companies like Lowe's, Ford, and Google sponsor the materials and bring their employees to build the beds. The Result: The company gets a high-impact team-building experience, and the nonprofit gets 100% mission-aligned funding.Avoiding "Mission Creep"As a senior strategist, I find Luke's discipline regarding Mission Creep to be a masterclass for any social impact leader. When you enter a home and see a family in need, the temptation to provide clothes, food, or toys is immense. However, Luke insists on a singular focus: Beds.By staying "mile-deep and inch-wide," SHP ensures their operations remain efficient, their branding stays clear, and their impact is measurable. This discipline is what allows them to maintain a 96% efficiency rate, ensuring nearly every dollar donated stays in the local community to build beds. How You Can Get InvolvedThe need is staggering—roughly 3% of children in any given community are sleeping without a bed. Here is how you can join the SHP family:Raise Awareness: Child bedlessness is an "unknown" crisis. Share this episode to help shine a light on the issue.Volunteer or Donate: Visit SHPBeds.org to find a local chapter. You can donate specifically to your city, ensuring your impact is felt at home.Start a Chapter: If your community lacks an SHP presence, the organization provides full training, tools, and initial funding to help you lead the charge."No kid sleeps on the floor in our town." It's a bold mission, but with leaders like Luke Mickelson and the power of community-driven data, it's a goal that is within our reach. ---------------------------About Charity ChargeCharity Charge is a financial technology company serving the nonprofit sector. Send us a textOn this week's episode of the Today is the Day Changemakers Podcast my guest is someone whose story will stay with you long after the episode ends: Luke Mickelson, founder of Sleep in Heavenly Peace. Luke's journey is nothing short of extraordinary. He didn't create a nonprofit — he sparked a national movement.Featured on The Today Show, Good Morning America, Hallmark Channel's Home & Family, NBC Nightly News with Lester Holt, and recognized as a Top 10 CNN Hero, Luke has been sharing a truth most people never even consider:There is a crisis happening in America that we don't talk about. Not every child has a bed.Since 2012, over 250,000 children have received brand-new beds because of Sleep in Heavenly Peace and its army of volunteers. Yet the need continues to grow.We talk about hunger. We talk about clothing. But we rarely talk about the child sleeping on a cold floor…or a blanket in the backseat of a car…or a couch they share with siblings.Luke has seen those children. He has delivered beds to those families. And he has witnessed the look on a child's face when they receive something many of us take for granted — a safe, warm, comfortable place to sleep. A moment that restores dignity, hope, and childhood itself. And here's what makes this story even more powerful:Luke didn't seek out this mission — it found him.A simple act.A moment of paying attention.A heart that refused to look away. That is all it took to ignite a movement.Today, with national partners like Lowe's and DeWALT, SHP has chapters across the country — but many communities still have none. The need is everywhere. Which is why Luke speaks so passionately about starting new chapters in towns, cities, and states nationwide. In this unforgettable episode, we discuss:· The moment that changed Luke's life — and thousands of others· The emotional reality of child bedlessness in America· What it feels like to hand a child their very first bed· Why heart health — emotional and physical — is intertwined with service· How YOU can start a Sleep in Heavenly Peace chapter and help change livesThis isn't just a story — it's a wake-up call.A reminder that one act of service can ripple into something life-changing.Let's make sure no child sleeps on the floor in our towns — or any town.#TodayIsTheDayPodcast #LukeMickelson #SleepInHeavenlyPeace #Changemakers #Service #Leadership #NonprofitImpact #EveryChildDeservesABed #CommunityAction #BeTheChange #Sleep #Bedlessness #Community #Volunteers #Lowes #DeWaltSupport the show
As we move deeper into the holiday season, Fostering Change continues to shine a light on the small acts of kindness that create powerful, lasting impact. This week, Rob Scheer sits down with his longtime friend Luke Mickelson, founder of Sleep in Heavenly Peace (SHP) — a nonprofit built on one simple mission: “No kid sleeps on the floor in our town.”What started in 2012, when Luke built a single bed for a family in need, has grown into a global movement. Today, SHP has 400+ chapters across 46 states and 4 countries, and has delivered nearly 300,000 beds to children who would otherwise be sleeping on the floor. As Luke shares:“When I found out a child was sleeping on a pile of clothes, it changed me. I realized I could sit there and do nothing, or I could get my feet on the ground and build another bed.”SHP empowers communities to take action by building beds locally, training new chapters, and helping neighbors come together through service — proving that every community can solve this issue in its own backyard. In this episode, Rob and Luke discuss:How one small idea grew into a global movementThe often unseen crisis of child bedlessnessSHP's “Humans Helping Humans” approach to volunteerismWhat it takes to start a chapter in your own communityWhy staying focused on a simple mission fuels sustainable growthLuke's story is a powerful reminder that transformative change often begins with a single decision to help someone else.
What if one small moment - something most people would walk past - could change your life and the lives of thousands? That's exactly what happened when Luke Mickelson saw a child sleeping on a “nest” of clothes on the floor. What followed was messy, imperfect, but undeniably powerful. In this episode, you'll see how compassion + action + leadership can birth a movement. Whether you're a leader, someone craving purpose, or just someone who believes big starts small - Luke's story will inspire you to notice what others don't, act even when you're unsure, and lead with your heart. First up, in Matenaer On Air's next edition of Beyond The Cheese, we welcome Jeff Burns, President of Weinbrenner Shoe Co. and maker of Thorogood Boots. Located in Wisconsin since their start in 1892, Weinbrenner makes and ships shoes all over the world. A key point of the interview is Jeff speaking about changing the culture of the company from "Shut Up And Work" to focusing on employees knowing their value and the importance of family, which is how he refers to those who work at the company. Then, Maino & the Mayor are joined by Dan Vermeulen to let us know about the work of Sleep In Heavenly Peace in Brown County. The group brings residents together to build beds for children under 17. Peace believes service is about much more than constructing beds for kids in need. Their mission is "No kid sleeps on the floor in our town." There are chapters in Fond du Lac, Oshkosh, and Appleton, and Dan says SIHP could also use chapters on the lakeshore. The conclusion of the the craziest cult story I had never heard of. This week, things, incredibly, get even weirder and darker than last week. More sexual debauchery. More twisted visions. And mass murder. And then it all comes crashing down after Jeffrey leads his followers into the wilderness where are there are dreams of magical vaginas, additional wives, and a lot more scat play.Want to apply for the Cummins Family Scholarship fund? The craziest cult story I had never heard of. Jeffrey Lundgren was a cult leader and a mass leader before being caught, imprisoned, and executed. What a wild ride he had before it all came to an end. Twisted sexual desires, doomsday predictions, and more. Today I tell the first of two parts of this tale. Who was Jeffrey Lundgren? How did he twist RLDS/Community of Christ teachings to convince his followers that he was the prophet Joseph Smith preached of who would redeem Zion for the faithful? After giving a refresher on the foundations of Mormonism, how the RLDS split off from the LDS, and explaining some key theological concepts Jeffrey would manipulate - we're off and running on a wild-ass, cult! cult! cult! timeline...Want to apply for the Cummins Family Scholarship fund? Skull and Bones has been shrouded in mystery ever since it was founded nearly two centuries ago now, back in 1832. All members take an oath promising NEVER to reveal the group's activities and secrets. And that oath is taken seriously. According to the traditional narrative, Skull and Bones was founded by a group of Yale juniors who were either angry over that year's honor society elections or inspired by occult European secret societies, or perhaps both. Is this group a nefarious organization connected to some sort of Illuminati plan to take over the world? Or, is it akin to a college fraternity? Nothing more than a place to network with rich and connected families who can greatly help your career aspirations once you graduate from Yale? Or an organization to be feared? The Zebra Murders were a series of racially motivated attacks and murders committed in San Francisco, California, by some so-called "Death Angels." From October of 1973 to April of 1974, a group of cold-blooded killers truly terrorized the city. Why? Nation of Islam teachings had convinced them that white people, in general, were truly evil "white devils" who needed to be destroyed. They were also taught that it was time for black men and women to violently start ridding the world of these white devils so that a type of heavenly paradise on Earth could be restored.
