There were many similarities in the lives of Michael Jackson and his long term friend and bodyguard, Matt Fiddes. Both hugely driven and successful, both at the top of their chosen careers, both subjected to violence by their fathers, struggled with depression and addiction to prescription drugs, became distant from their families... With so much common ground, it's no wonder they formed a lasting friendship, but there's more to Matt Fiddes than Michael Jackson. On this episode of Build Better Brands, Danielle Clarke is joined by Matt Fiddes who owns the world's biggest martial arts brand worth over £120 million, he was featured on Rich House Poor House and was Michael Jackson's best friend for many years. He knows all about building a brand and shares his expertise on today's podcast.KEY TAKEAWAYSI think everybody who has built something that's gone big had painful childhoods. Most of my entrepreneur friends were teased or bullied at school or had some kind of trigger point. For me bullying was the thing and not being good at school, being under-confident, wanting to achieve more and being told you're no good at anything. The only thing I was good at in my head was martial arts. Even then I knew that was all I wanted to do somehow. I'm quite a strong believer in the law of attraction.Everything the school system teaches I provide within my martial arts school's life skills programme: anti-bullying skills, stranger danger, fire safety, water safety, goal-setting, persistence, how to make money, what's good or bad debt. That set me apart from everyone else and made me go on to build the world's biggest brand in my sector. I focussed on putting an incredible service out there that no one else was doing.A brand is something that's been around and is trusted, you put the name in Google and you've got pages and pages of proof going back years, that's a brand. A person with a logo is someone who's just put together a mastermind or knocked together a franchise and called themselves a brand, but if you put their name in Google there's nothing there, there's no social proof. The definition for me is that a brand is people who don't want to mess around, who want to be in mainstream media (TV, radio, newspapers), because people will choose you over people that have no social proof. I'm not interested in personal brands, I think it's a load of nonsense. Personal brand is for people who don't know who to build a brand.I believe, to make a franchise, you've got to do things ethically. If your business is making money, you've got at least 3-5 years of profitable accounts, then it makes sense to take that business and do it over and over again. Where people go wrong in business is always looking for the next shiny object. Having a successful business, with proof of its success, makes it easier to sell as well.BEST MOMENTS‘I was bullied quite badly at school and if it wasn't for the first one, Anthony, I wouldn't be where I am now as it spurred me on to take up martial arts to defend myself. Anthony now is the Anti-Bullying Ambassador for my company.'‘I collaborated with Jermaine Jackson, Michael Jackson's older brother. We toured the UK, went to schools talking about our success and experience and the rough times we had as kids.'‘I've got no qualifications, I didn't do well at school at all, I failed at everything which I'm not proud of. But, at the same time, it shows people they can be whatever they want to be as long as they study the greatest to make themselves better and believe in themselves.'‘The more I give the more I receive. You've got to lead by example. There's too many fake-it-til-they-make it in this industry who say they've got a brand and they haven't, they've got a logo – big difference.'ABOUT THE GUESTMatt Fiddes is one of the most respected experts in the international world of martial arts and fitness. Matt's achievements have seen him honoured at the highest level, after being inducted into the UK Martial Arts Hall of Fame and presented with the prestigious ‘Martial Arts Superstar Award'.Matt's unique training programmes are designed for both children and adults and have proved to be a massive success with over 600 training schools across the UK, Europe, and South Africa. He is a 7th Degree Black Belt Master in Tae Kwon Do and holds Black Belts in Kickboxing and Kung Fu is now one of the most in-demand personal trainers thanks to front covers and interviews in newspapers and magazines worldwide. He has numerous celebrity clientele including actors, supermodels and singers. Undoubtedly Matt's biggest client was superstar Michael Jackson. A varied and informative episode, where Rob is joined by his millionaire inner circle including Michael Jacksons bodyguard Matt Fiddes and Ryan in a live Q&A Session. KEY TAKEAWAYS Matt says you can franchise any type of business. If you have something tangible that works for you, with social proof and brand power, then you can franchise it successfully. The comeback for Matt after a very dark period of his life, Is what sky rocketed the business for him. He began to work hard on himself personally and alongside with his wife's support, he was able to come out stronger, better and richer too. You don't need a website to build an email database. You just need a simple landing page which gives an incentive to gather emails addresses from people. When you really know your product and follow your passion, you can use your intuition to market yourself and your business successfully. Rob doesn't understand people who aren't money motivated. Money gives freedom to do the things you want. You have to be very craeful with emotions because they aren't who you are, they are just how you feel in the moment. Its important to not make financial decisions when you are having strong emotions, especially if you value long-term wealth. BEST MOMENTS “These scar on your brain, just like if you tear a muscle” “Because I sell well I found marketing to be easier” “If you can sell yourself, and self-promote you are 90% of the way there, you just need to put yourself in the right people” “If it was ok to be money-motivated, then more people would be” “Money flows from those who value it least to those who value it most” VALUABLE RESOURCES https://robmoore.com/ bit.ly/Robsupporter https://podcasts.apple.com/gb/podcast/the-matt-fiddes-show/id1565972831 https://robmoore.com/podbooks ABOUT THE HOST Rob Moore is an author of 9 business books, 5 UK bestsellers, holds 3 world records for public speaking, entrepreneur, property investor, and property educator. Matt Fiddes is multi-skilled, multi-faceted entrepreneur, often first known for being Michael Jackson's bodyguard, he is a very successful businessman in his own right and created the biggest martial arts franchise in the world! Join Rob and Matt as they talk about all things business, discuss the many rumours around Matt's life and of course Michael Jackson! KEY TAKEAWAYS Michael Jackson was brainwashed as a child, he was taught to not be open emotionally, especially to the public. This impacted how he built relationships and interacted with the world for the rest of his life. Michael always kept everyone guessing, with the one glove or makeup or even a mask. He said these things guaranteed publicity, it kept people talking about him. Behind closed doors he was pretty much like anyone else, just normal. Matt found this transformation innovative and exciting. It's what we now call great branding and something most famous people and businesses do without question. Rob compares Michael and his flare for being memorable was similar in style to the likes of Andy Warhol and Alexander McQueen. Michael Jackson didn't embrace the digital transformation that had begun in music before his death. In some ways, Matt believes he would have struggled with the world as it is now but Michael would at least be able to address rumours head on via social media and speak to his fans directly. Something he was unable to do whilst he was alive. A few people know that Michael Jackson bought Eminem's back catalogue as a comeback to Eminem mocking MJ in his Music Video for the song Just Lose It. This hinted at the ruthless streak Michael occasionally had, further demonstrated by when he bought the rights to The Beatles music and would somewhat taunt Paul McCartney about it. Matt struggled in school, he was bullied and struggled with writing especially but rather than letting it hold him back it's what gave him the fire in his belly to do more with his life. It gave him the hunger to thrive, he wanted to prove everyone and the world wrong. Matt knew he wanted to run his own Martial Arts school. Matt took some time to really think about how he could make it work. He knew he wanted to do something different and really disrupt the industry. After hearing about how different the Martial Arts Schools were in America, Matt Fiddes saved for a ticket and flew over to go to a Martial Art Conference in San Francisco. After this he was taken under the wing of the American organiser who introduced him to many people and taught him everything he knew. He then went back to the UK and really started change things, including the use of standing orders for paying, providing real education in sessions and adding music to the classes; all at just 18 years old. Matt is a great believer in the law of attraction, wherever you put your energy is where you are going to flow. You often don't see behind the scenes of entrepreneurs but the difficulties they face happen often and is all very real. Matt has had to deal with his own share of hate, rumours and negativity. 2009 was a hell of a year for Matt. Michael Jackson died, he went through a divorce, his mum died; he ended up being prescribed anti-depressants and Valium. It was a challenging time but he came out the other side stronger and happier by focusing on his next steps and goals. Martial arts taught Matt discipline and everything else he needed to be successful. He wouldn't have found success in the same way without it. BEST MOMENTS “I just thought it was normal for18 year olds to be hanging around with Michael [Jackson] and all his friends” “Michael Jackson is a fascinating person to study because he clearly knew how to get people to remember him and talk about him” “I wanted to make sure, that anything I wanted my students to do, I could do” “The bullying, the childhood, lead to everything else. The bullied boy became [a] millionaire” VALUABLE RESOURCES https://robmoore.com/ bit.ly/Robsupporter https://podcasts.apple.com/gb/podcast/the-matt-fiddes-show/id1565972831 https://robmoore.com/podbooks ABOUT THE HOST Rob Moore is an author of 9 business books, 5 UK bestsellers, holds 3 world records for public speaking, entrepreneur, property investor, and property educator. Ross Kemp has just ‘exposed' Michael Jackson in a documentary about the treatment of animals in the zoo in the Neverland Ranch, Rob thinks it's the most pointless documentary ever! Listen in to hear his thoughts and why we need more balance on media too! KEY TAKEAWAYS What is the point of doing an expose on Michael Jackson when he died 15 years ago. Ross Kemp is arguably a credible documentarian, why is he spending his time on something which is ancient history. There's no art or point in this documentary. Rob was talking to Michael's good friend Matt Fiddes just yesterday, being his ex-bodyguard and friend he can give a balanced view on Michael and how he lives his life. He wants to give the other side of the story and does so on his podcast: The Matt Fiddes Show: https://podcasts.apple.com/gb/podcast/the-matt-fiddes-show/id1565972831 BEST MOMENTS “Michael Jackson has been dead for nearly 15 years, so what's the point” “Ross Kemp, go back to doing good work!” “There's not enough balance on media” VALUABLE RESOURCES https://robmoore.com/ bit.ly/Robsupporter https://podcasts.apple.com/gb/podcast/the-matt-fiddes-show/id1565972831 https://robmoore.com/podbooks ABOUT THE HOST Rob Moore is an author of 9 business books, 5 UK bestsellers, holds 3 world records for public speaking, entrepreneur, property investor, and property educator. Join Kurt and Di in this episode as they interview the most respected expert in the international world of martial arts, personal trainer to the stars and trusted employee of international superstar Michael Jackson. Matt opens-up about his incredible life story, what it was like being so close to people like Michael Jackson and Uri Gellar as well as the many lessons he has discovered along the way. KEY TAKEAWAYS Matt didn't have the greatest time at school. He got bullied and he found that the system and structure didn't work for him either. He tried his best but the experience knocked his confidence. However, he recognises that if it hadn't been for this experience, he never would have had the fire in his belly to achieve what he has. He began training in martial arts at 7, he had a natural ability for this and the praise he received cheered him on. He went on to open Martial Art Schools as an adult and has now built the biggest chain of Martial Art Schools in the world! Mindset has always been key for Matt. He has always simply decided what he wanted to do and then done the work and actions needed to achieve it. You have to be passionate and have the mindset and self-motivation to self-educate. This is how anyone can become successful. Matt got into property at age 18. His journey continued when he met Uri Geller who pushed him harder and further. They are still good friends today. A phone call at 03:30am changed Matt's life forever. He was introduced by Uri to Michael Jackson, this is how they met and for the next decade Matt was his personal bodyguard and friend. He learnt that there were two sides to Michael. There was the soft friendly side and then there was the strict, harsher side which Matt attributes to Michaels Dad, Joe Jackson. Michael Jackson knew how to keep himself in the media, a lot of the things he would be in the newspaper for or on the news, were on purpose. ‘Michael Jackson' was a persona he took on when he was performing and in the limelight. He was a real marketer and a great businessman. Since Michael died, there has been an influx of rumours, some based on old rumours and some new. It's unfair as he is not here to defend himself, Matt never saw anything that would elude to any of these allegations being true and he was by his side for over ten years. Michael didn't have many vices, but Matt says his favourite meal was fish and chips and he adored KFC! Matt would often treat him when he would ‘sneak' Michael out into the real world away from his entourage of security etc. We all have skeletons and family issues. It doesn't matter how famous or how rich you are these don't go away. There was a lot of complex issues going on in the Jackson family and still is. As an older and wiser man, Matt now understands that Michael didn't want to hear things he didn't like. Even if people were trying to help him, if they said something he didn't like then they were out of his inner circle. BEST MOMENTS “You find with a lot of successful people they have had this pain point which motivated them” “You've got to do the opposite to everyone else to be successful” “How can Michael Jackson have no money?” “The bigger the star, the bigger the target” ABOUT THE HOSTS Kurt Wilson - Entrepreneur, Internet Veteran and Property Investor with multiple 7 figure businesses and property investments in the UK, GI, LT, BY and GR. This week I'm on a mission with self-made multi-millionaire Matt Fiddes, a world-renowned martial arts expert who has built a global fitness empire in over 1000 locations and was also Michael Jackson's personal bodyguard and best friend for over ten years. From a bullied schoolboy to earning £100K a month by the age of 18, Matt went on to travel the world as MJ's bodyguard and shares some rare insights as to what it was REALLY like within MJ's inner circle. We have a frank discussion about Michael's genius, his struggles with fame, the truth behind the controversial child sex abuse allegations and who is really to blame for his untimely death. Matt's achievements have seen him honoured at the highest level, after being inducted into the UK Martial Arts Hall of Fame and presented with the prestigious ‘Martial Arts Superstar Award'. But despite his incredible success, the road has not always been an easy one. In this episode, we talk candidly about the struggles he has faced, the challenges he has overcome, and the winning mindset he has attained along the way - one that has enabled Matt to battle back against adversity and come out fighting every time. A truly incredibly story. KEY TAKEAWAYS Sometimes the traditional routes through education and into life, do not fit our character or values, and yet society seems to want to make us conform. We must always try to see the positives, even in dark situations. Matt spent much time being bullied at school, but instead of using the experience to become embittered, Matt recognised that his bully had essentially steered him onto the path to success later in life. The world assumes that the life of Michael Jackson was a charmed one, but the reality of his fame and lifestyle meant that life was extraordinarily difficult, and not at all the jet-setting, glamorous existence that the media has portrayed. When we invest in generational assets, such as property, we create a legacy for the generations that will come after us. Property, in particular, is an asset that continues to generate income throughout life. Matt could not write when he left school but that did not hold him back. Everybody has setbacks in their life no matter how successful they are. The more you put yourself out there, the more fans you have, but the more critics you have as well, which is something you have to learn to deal with positively. Matt also candidly discusses the experience of appearing on ‘Rich House, Poor House' and how it helped him to re-evaluate what really matters in life - family KEY TAKEAWAYS It's been about a lot of hard work a little bit of luck along with perseverance Usually, those who are successful have had been through some sort of pain in their childhood I attracted the bullies whatever school I went to because I was different Nobody wants to watch positive stuff they only want to watch negative things Finally, years, after Michael passed away the truth, is going to come out and everyone will know he was innocent Anything to do with the Jackson's seems to be about manipulation of the narrative When you mix with billionaires it takes everything to the next level Fame at the highest level in America is not glamourous its dark and can be filled with threat When you are famous and you are feeling unloved you can get immediate love by doing something silly that brings attention from your fans and the paparazzi If you want to be interesting you have to have people interested in you so you have to stay controversial. If you don't have haters and critics you aren't doing a good enough job Everything happens for a reason and what happened to me is what has made me It's not hard to earn money but in reality family and having a roof over your head is the only thing that matters It's property that has made my mega wealth and it's my most secure cashflow Property is a proven system and it works over and over again. BEST MOMENTS ‘You don't want people to figure you out because then they keep talking about you' ‘Generational wealth is all that really matters to me' ‘You can do anything you want to do if you have the drive' VALUABLE RESOURCES Beehive Household podcast ABOUT THE HOST Nataliya Lloyd is a finance expert and after 15 years of studying and working in the industry, she changed tack and went with her dream of becoming an entrepreneur and followed her creative call. In this episode, Rob talks with Matt Fiddes about what opportunities there are post-lockdown and what you need to do to make the most of them. They also discuss Rob's new book Opportunity: Seize The Day. Win At Life and what Rob's motivation was behind the book and his entrepreneurial journey. KEY TAKEAWAYS The whole world has been shut down for 12 months, if you have the right mindset then you can look around and see what opportunities there are available to you. You have to seize the opportunities out there and turn the challenges and problems into something that drives you. There are probably many people out there who were in a job that wasn't making them happy. Lockdown gave them the opportunity to soul search and post-lockdown is now the opportunity for them to take action and make a decision to change things. There's billions of cash in peoples bank accounts that they haven't been able to spend because of lockdown. We will see a mini-boom in social and live events once restrictions are lifted, many companies may have struggled in the pandemic so this produces a unique chance for a new business venture or a new direction for an existing business. There have been artificial things propping up the market, such as furlough, but these will all end and it is then we will see a dip, particularly in property prices. Almost any new business needs to be online. Setting up a digital business selling courses, masterminds, mentoring etc in your niche is a low cost but high value way to bring in cash. Utilise all social media platforms, send dms, do lives, repurpose all of your content. Get yourself everywhere and drive people to buy from you. There are hundreds of business and mindset books out there but there was only one on opportunity. Now with Rob's new book, there is two! This book is not about waiting for an opportunity that might never come. It's a book for right now containing ideas and strategies that can be employed right away, and will ensure that you attract opportunities, whether big or small, all the time. BEST MOMENTS "What he doesn't know isn't worth knowing" "You've GOT to be online" "More millionaires are made in depressions than any other time" "We're gonna see successful entrepreneurs thrive" "If you win more days then you lose then you'll win at life" "I'll learn anything from anyone Matt, I think we can all teach each other stuff" VALUABLE RESOURCES Rob Moore Opportunity https://robmoore.com/ bit.ly/Robsupporter https://robmoore.com/podbooks ABOUT THE HOST Rob Moore is an author of 9 business books, 5 UK bestsellers, holds 3 world records for public speaking, entrepreneur, property investor, and property educator. International fitness trainer to the stars and pop royalty Michael Jackson's trusted security guard and friend, Matt Fiddes joins Rob today to discuss THAT royal interview with Prince Harry and Meghan Markle. Together they discuss their thoughts and opinions on the interview, how the interview with the world's most successful TV broadcaster Oprah has helped launch their new personal brand and Matt shares his personal experiences with Prince Harry. KEY TAKEAWAY It is understandable that Prince Harry would like to protect his wife given the fact that she was having mental health problems, and was having suicidal thoughts. However, to broadcast it to over 1 billion people, could potentially make her the most hunted woman ever in the media. Prince Harry does not want a repeat of what happened to Princess Dianna however the interview was broadcast to 1 billion people. It is hard to believe that Megan and Harry would have sat there in front of Oprah without knowing what was going to be asked. The Megan and Harry interview was not live, it was edited so there was a huge amount of control for all three of them. Prince Harry and Megan have got to start thinking about making some serious money as they are no longer getting any palace funding. Prince Harry is a very clever man and is very much in control of his and Megan's life and he always aims to protect both her and their son. Security for the three of them will cost a lot of money and they need to think about how they can afford this lifestyle. Prince Harry and Megan have launched their personal brand on the world's largest TV broadcast with the world's most successful TV interviewer. They are cleaning up their personal brand and they are also clearing up some truths. The irony here is that they have a desire to be private and secure and yet they are living in the hottest press city in the whole world and have just been guests on the biggest show in the world. They are launching their new life and distancing themselves from the royal family and now everyone is going to be talking about them forever. BEST MOMENTS “This thing will go on for months. I don't think it was the smartest thing to do.” “They had a right to share their side and had a right to share their truths.” “What better way to launch your brand than on Oprah?!” “He's a clever guy. Prince Harry is not a clown.” “Personally I don't begrudge them that at all.” ABOUT THE GUEST Matt Fiddes is one of the most respected experts in the international world of martial arts and fitness. Matt's achievements have seen him honoured at the highest level, after being inducted into the UK Martial Arts Hall of Fame and presented with the prestigious ‘Martial Arts Superstar Award'. Introduced to Matt by his close friend Uri Geller, Matt was Michael's personal UK bodyguard for over a decade before his tragic death in June 2009. DESCRIPTION Join Rob Moore today for an exclusive interview with Matt Fiddes, the most respected expert in the international world of martial arts, personal trainer to the stars and trusted employee of international superstar Michael Jackson. Together they discuss Matt's incredible life story, what it was like working for pop legend Michael Jackson and lessons he learnt along the way. An interview you do not want to miss. KEY TAKEAWAYS Don't talk about people and things, talk about ideas. Use your time to come up with how to make your first or next million or what your newest big idea is going to be. Keep yourself and others around you accountable for their actions and encourage them to be the best versions of themselves. There is nothing that cannot be done or reached in life. Your qualifications that you gain in school, may not help you on the path to success. Read multiple books a week to allow you to continuously grow throughout your life. Never watch, read or listen to something that you cannot learn from. Don't be a follower, be a pioneer. We're all big fans of modelling people, model people you admire, learn from them and then make it better than they or anyone else before them. Practice, practice, practice what you want to become, so that you can take your life to the next level. Get the balance right. Whilst money is great and can allow you to arrive at your problems in style as well as help you to help others, remember that your family is what counts the most. Don't focus on the money, focus on being good at providing a good service. The money is the reward that comes back to you. The word disruptive means to go against the grain. To be disruptive means to do what others don't and finding yourself within the top 3% of the population. Learn how to get yourself into the top 3% by continuously learning and smashing your goals. BEST MOMENTS “Money is not the goal here, I still want that standard.” “I had a passive income, I didn't need to work anymore.” “I am my own worst competitor, I have to use my martial arts mindset to get through.” “I thought it was normal, now I look back at 41 years of age and I get why people thought it was strange.” ABOUT THE GUEST Matt Fiddes is one of the most respected experts in the international world of martial arts and fitness.
