I'm a big believer in security systems. Think about weak points of entry places where people might get into and be very careful on social media. People put way too much information out there on social media.”MIKE: Identifying warning signs and speaking up“One of the key things they found was that somebody always knows beforehand. These people don't simply erupt out of the blue and somebody other than the shooter knows about it before they act. The question is, does that information get shared and do they get stopped? Because there is a really definite pattern that they go through” Check out the first part of our amazing conversation with Michael Brewer here:SOMETHING HOT IS BREWING: High-profile security cases and more with Michael Brewer (Part 1)Connect with Mike and learn more about his work:Mike Brewer on LinkedInTo hear more episodes of The Fearless Mindset podcast, you can go to https://the-fearless-mindset.simplecast.com/ or listen to major podcasting platforms such as Apple, Google Podcasts, Spotify, etc. You can also subscribe to the Fearless Mindset YouTube Channel to watch episodes on video.

On this episode of the BYO Nano Podcast we're talking about best practices and advice for someone who wants to take over a small, existing brewery. The idea came from a listener who wrote: “I'm someone who is overwhelmed by the non-beer aspects of starting a taproom from scratch - legal, regulatory, architectural design and layout, branding, marketing, and a blank sheet of paper. I've explored a couple of taprooms and small brewpubs for sale. What's a smart way to go about this?” That's a jumping off point and our panel will start with the from scratch aspect then transition into what it takes to acquire an existing brewery. The lessons shared are also applicable to someone just starting out as well. The panel includes: Jon Carpenter who his career as a summer brewing intern at Drakes Brewing Co in 2002 while attending UC Davis, studying Brewing Science. After graduating with a BS in Food Science & Technology (Brewing Emphasis) and a BA in Political Science in 2005, he went on to work for Anheuser-Busch in their Research Pilot Brewery. From there he went onto Dogfish Head, and then to Golden Road followed by Alchemy and Science, the Boston Beer collection of breweries. Today he works at Opensō Consulting, Independent Brewery and Craft Beverage Consulting firm. Michael Brewer, the president of Alcoholic Beverage Consulting Service, a leading alcoholic beverage licensing firm. Alcoholic Beverage Consulting Service represents numerous alcoholic beverage licensees in all segments of the alcohol industry. Brewer was a regulatory auditor for the United States Custom Service and holds a Master's degree in accounting from San Diego State University. And Matthew McLaughlin, founder of McLaughlin, PC, a boutique commercial law firm specializing in the beverage industry. He has represented breweries and distilleries throughout the United States for nearly 20 years advising clients on business entity formation, ownership structure, startup financing and expansion financing, federal and state regulatory matters, and intellectual property. Matthew has also served as the executive director of the Mississippi Brewers Guild and was instrumental in the passage of House Bill 1322, a bill that expanded retail sales opportunities for breweries in Mississippi and fundamentally changed Mississippi's brewpub laws. In April 2017 at the Brewers Association's annual Craft Brewers Conference, Matthew received the F.X. Matt Defense of the Industry Award. Bleach, bologna and super glue --Do you know what these items have in common? They have all been used by people to get revenge against another. Dr. Phil, along with criminal defense attorney Anthony Pope and revenge expert and blogger Dr. Gina Barreca, delve into headline-making revenge stories of retribution, like the women from Wisconsin who were arrested for using super glue on a man's private parts, and Michael Brewer, a 15-year-old who was badly burned after telling police that boys stole his dad's bike. Next, Todd says months after he separated from his wife, Deborah, she took revenge against him, and he landed in jail. He says now it's payback time, but find out why he doesn't act like it. Then, hear Deborah's side. When Dr. Phil drills down, will she admit to criminal activities? You won't believe the strange behavior of both Deborah and Todd. Anthony and Gina weigh-in on this battle, but they see it way differently. And, a woman tried to get even with her husband's ex-wife, but the outcome wasn't what she expected. Michael Brewer and Tom Shipley are folk singers who became famous for their 1971 Top 10 hit "One Toke Over the Line." But as Michael points out in our talk, their biggest hit isn't like most of their work, which is more socially conscious and ballad oriented. So "One Toke" isn't the only story here, but it is the biggest one. Michael tells the how "One Toke" started as a joke, how it became a hit, the controversy that followed it, and what it meant for Brewer & Shipley. Oh yeah, and that it ended up sung on a TV show where you'd never expect to hear it!Michael also talks his music career (starting at age four), how he met Tom, their time in L.A. (hanging out with Buffalo Springfield and other notable bands), what moved the pair back to the Midwest, their times on the road, some of the surprising bands they opened for, and much more. He's a great storyteller and he's got a lot of stories to tell. I think you'll enjoy it as much as I did...which is a lot!

Recognized as one of the most successful folk rock duos of the 70's, Brewer & Shipley have remained true to their original form throughout five decades. Constantly touring Brewer & Shipley could be found performing in such notable venues as; Carnegie Hall, The Bottom Line, The Troubadour, The Roxy, Keil Opera House, and Arrowhead Stadium. Because of their broad appeal, they became a favored support act for major tours, sharing the stage with a diverse list of artists, including: Elton John, The Eagles, Bruce Springsteen, Billy Joel, Bonnie Raitt, Electric Light Orchestra, Jethro Tull, Humble Pie, Ted Nugent and Black Sabbath among others. In 1979 after more than a decade of writing, traveling, and performing, Brewer and Shipley parted company to pursue personal interests. Michael Brewer continued to make music, recording a solo album for Full Moon Records entitled "Beauty Lies". This release featured guest artists such as Linda Ronstadt and J.D. Souther, and was produced by longtime friend Dan Fogelberg. Tom Shipley began working as a television producer/director, eventually forming his own production company (Tarkio Communications). He later founded the Oral History of The Ozarks Project, a not-profit organization producing documentaries about life in the Missouri Ozarks. In 1986, at the request of a Kansas City classic rock station the duo reunited for a concert to celebrate the stations first birthday. Unsure of what to expect having been out of the public eye for so long, the duo was overwhelmed as they walked on stage to over 10,000 cheering fans welcoming their return. Having come full circle from their days as staff songwriters living in Los Angeles, Brewer & Shipley began writing together again. Their first project? The soundtrack for one of Shipley's documentaries...the award winning, "Treehouse - An Ozark Story". In recent years, the duo has witnessed rejuvenated interest in their music, beginning with BMG's purchase of their catalog and subsequent re-issue of the critically acclaimed "Tarkio" release. This was soon followed by the inclusion of "One Toke Over The Line" on the "Fear And Loathing In Las Vegas Limited Edition 25th Anniversary CD" (Jimmy Buffett's Margaritaville Rcds). The same song was later featured on the "Fear And Loathing In Las Vegas" motion picture soundtrack (Geffen Rcds.). In addition, the duo contribute guest vocals to their trademark song on "Hempilation II" (Capricorn Rcds.). Brewer & Shipley continue to tour and record regularly, having released 2 albums since reuniting - "Shanghai" and "Heartland.” Regarding Brewer & Shipley, Ron Sylvester (The Branson Note) wrote, "An actual group from the 70's still capable of making vital music...For a duo best remembered as 70's folkies, this is a solid blast into the present...undeniable proof these guys can still make evocative music". www.brewerandshipley.com

The soundtrack for one of Shipley's documentaries...the award winning, "Treehouse - An Ozark Story".In recent years, the duo has witnessed rejuvenated interest in their music, beginning with BMG's purchase of their catalog and subsequent re-issue of the critically acclaimed "Tarkio" release. In addition, the duo contribute guest vocals to their trademark song on "Hempilation II" (Capricorn Rcds.).Brewer & Shipley continue to tour and record regularly, having released 2 albums since reuniting - "Shanghai" and "Heartland.” Regarding Brewer & Shipley, Ron Sylvester (The Branson Note) wrote, "An actual group from the 70's still capable of making vital music...For a duo best remembered as 70's folkies, this is a solid blast into the present...undeniable proof these guys can still make evocative music".A production of LIU Public Radio. Hogs for the Cause has all of the ingredients for a spectacular spring festival live music, libations, and prize winning barbecue. But Hogs is so much more than that. It s one of the top fundraisers for families battling pediatric brain cancer. On this week s Louisiana Eats, we sit down with co founder Becker Hall to hear the story of how this worthwhile now legendary event came to be, and their plans for the future. Then, we talk with three members of a team going above and beyond, finding a way to bring home the bacon for Hogs all year round. Silence of da Hams is comprised of Chris Montero of the Napoleon House, Michael Brewer of Baton Rouge s City Pork, Tory McPhail of Commander s Palace, Jared Ralls, and its newest member, Parkway Bakery s Justin Kennedy. To increase their annual giving to the Hogs cause, the original four chefs developed a Louisiana style smoked sausage now available at Rouse s Markets and other groceries throughout the Gulf South. Finally, we speak with pitmaster and food writer Colleen Rush, who has been setting the world of backyard barbeque on fire. Along with co author Gary Wiviott, the Louisiana native has created a comprehensive guide to barbecue and charcoal cooking techniques in their book, Low and Slow 2 The Art of Barbecue, Smoke Roasting, and Basic Curing. MICHAEL BREWER & TOM SHIPLEY began their careers as solo folk artists on the coffee house circuit in the early 1960s. Both native mid-westerns (Oklahoman and Ohioan respective to their billing), they first met in 1964 at the Blind Owl coffee house in Kent, Ohio. It would be three more years before they would team up, and during those three years the two crossed paths at clubs on the folk circuit, and each tried their hand in other musical collaborations that didn't pan out. DOWN IN L.A. In 1965 Michael Brewer migrated to Los Angeles following the emerging west coast music scene. His initial duo Mastin & Brewer signed a record deal with Columbia Records but after the group imploded before finishing their record, Brewer eventually accepted a job as a staff songwriter at Good Sam Music, a publishing offshoot of the newly formed A&M Records. Around this time, Tom Shipley arrived in L.A. and looked up his acquaintance from the folk circuit. Tom rented a house around the corner from Michael's house, and soon they began writing songs together. When Shipley was subsequently hired as staff writer for A&M in 1967, their partnership began as a songwriting collaboration.
Silence of the Hams and Hogs In 2008, childhood buddies, Becker Hall and Rene Louape founded Hogs For the Cause during a casual backyard pig roast. Today, Hogs for the Cause has grown into New Orleans largest BBQ event, spanning two days with 85 teams from across the country competing for the big prize. But the real cause is pediatric brain cancer. Over the last decade Hogs has awarded 600 grants, partnering with Children s Hospital of New Orleans, Oschner, Duke and many other children s hospitals across the country to identify families in need. In this episode, we sit down with Becker to hear the story of how this worthwhile, now legendary event came to be and their plans for the future. And then we catch up with local favorites, Silence of the Hams, a Hogs team comprised of Chris Montero of the Napoleon House, Michael Brewer of Baton Rouge s City Pork, Tory McPhail of Commander s Palace, Jared Ralls and newest member, Parkway Bakery s Justin Kennedy. To increase their annual giving to the Hogs Cause, chefs Chris Montero, Tory McPhail, Michael Brewer and Jared Rails developed a Louisiana style smoked sausage, produced by Chisesi Brothers. that s now available at Rouse s Markets and other groceries throughout the Gulf South. Today on Hempresent Vivian McPeak is joined by Michael Brewer, of Brewer & Shipley. "Michael Brewer & Tom Shipley are truly two who work as one. Still as passionate as ever, they continue to blend guitars and voices and perform for audiences 40 years after their trademark vocal harmonies and intertwined acoustic guitars carved a unique niche in America's soundboard. Their melodic music and underlying lyrical themes of personal freedom and traditional songs of love still resonate with long time fans while continuing to draw new ones. Brewer & Shipley's Top 10 hit "One Toke Over The Line" was largely responsible for introducing them to the masses, yet their music careers neither began nor ended with this one song. "One Toke Over The Line" became a hit single record, but that was a small measure of the impact Brewer and Shipley had on people who listened to the sound they had created. Album buyers understood that these men were designers, not pop music freaks, and as prolific as they were, they didn't write songs to any formula. Each album, from Down In L.A. to Heartland, was a meticulously woven tapestry of fabric they had invented one song at a time. Brewer & Shipley have recorded albums for four different lsbels, A&M Records, Buddah/Kama Sutra Records, Capitol Records, and their own One Toke Productions. They have created timeless music that has spanned 40 years, 50 states and many countries. Brewer & Shipley... two guys, two guitars, two great voices still blending as one."

A "Toke" is a puff from a marijuana cigarette or pipe. Tom Shipley explained: "When we wrote 'One Toke Over the Line,' I think we were one toke over the line. I considered marijuana a sort of a sacrament... If you listen to the lyrics of that song, 'one toke' was just a metaphor. It's a song about excess. Too much of anything will probably kill you." Brewer says of the song's origin: "We wrote that one night in the dressing room of the Cowtown Ballroom in Kansas City, Missouri. We were literally just entertaining ourselves. The next day we got together to do some picking and said, 'What was that we were messing with last night?' We remembered it, and in about an hour, we'd written 'One Toke Over the Line.' Just making ourselves laugh, really. We had no idea that it would ever even be considered as a single, because it was just another song to us. Actually Tom and I always thought that our ballads were our forte." On "4/20" Slacker chats with Michael Brewer.
