On May 20 constitutional attorney and COS co-founder Michael Farris gave a tour de force performance in defense of Article V and the Convention of States movement. The Ohio House Committee on Government Oversight held a proponents-only hearing for COS Action's Article V application (HJR 2), as well as our 34|Ready bill (HB 67). Farris answered questions from the sometimes-combative legislators and provided expert testimony. Several COS Ohio citizen leaders also provided supporting testimony. Rita Peters and Andrew Lusch provide commentary. After the hearing stream, Regional Director Catherine Zemanek shares behind-the-scenes information and previews what's next in the process.

Michael P. Farris is a litigator, educator, public advocate, and communicator, and is widely recognized for his successful work on both the national and international stage. He was founding president of both the Home School Legal Defense Association (1983) and Patrick Henry College (2000). Michael served as the President and CEO of Alliance Defending Freedom from 2017 to 2022. He is currently General Counsel to the National Religious Broadcasters. For over 40 years, Michael has practiced constitutional appellate litigation specializing in religious freedom and parental rights. In that capacity, he has argued before many state appellate courts, federal circuit courts of appeal, and even the Supreme Court of the United States! Of particular note is that Mike was CEO of the Alliance Defending Freedom organization while ADF was serving as co-counsel to the Attorney General of Mississippi for the case of Dobbs v. Jackson Women's Health which reversed Roe v. Wade! For his work, Michael has received numerous awards and honors, including two honorary doctorates. He is the author of over fifteen books, as well as law review and other scholarly and popular articles. He and his wife, Vickie, have ten children, 31 grandchildren and one great-grandchild (with more to come!) In this podcast, Michael talks about how as an attorney he helped me (Randy Hekman) in 1982 when I as a Juvenile Court Judge faced potential consequences due to my ruling on a case involving a 13 year old girl who sought an abortion. Michael also talks about the incredible blessing of children, a concept that far too few Christian parents fully embrace. Why should we Christians buy into the world's lie that children are more a burden than a blessing and therefore should be minimized? Finally, Michael shares about a trip to the Soviet Union in 1988 where he met many Christian couples who had very large families. And they explained to Michael that they chose to have many children to show the distressed world around them that, with God and His blessings, we can have genuine hope for the future rather than despair.

What does it look like to have courage to stand through suffering? What biblical principles can we apply to our lives? How do we order our lives to cultivate a life of courage that will stand in the day of suffering? In this powerful story from former fire chief Kelvin Cochran who was fired for his biblical convictions, you will be inspired and encouraged to stand strong no matter what is going on in your life. In this practical interview, Jonathan Morrow and Kelvin Cochran discuss 5 lessons that help you in times of suffering.About Kelvin Cochran Kelvin J. Cochran serves as senior fellow and vice president for Alliance Defending Freedom. In this role, he reports directly to ADF President and CEO Michael Farris. Cochran is responsible for overseeing ADF's Leadership Development Program, leadingprograms that will assist, encourage, and support Christians who are victims of cancel culture attacks; overseeing ADF's Prayer Initiative Team; and speaking at ADF events to engage and promote ADF's mission to defend religious liberty. Cochran also supports ADF's Church and Ministry Alliance by working to increase its partners.Cochran dedicated over 30 years of his life to fighting fires and protecting the communities in which he's lived and worked. After being born into extreme poverty in Shreveport, Louisiana, he worked his way up the ranks and became Shreveport's fire chief in 1999 where he served until he was appointed fire chief for the city of Atlanta, Georgia in 2008.His exemplary service record drew the attention of President Obama who appointed Cochran as the administrator of the U.S. Fire Administration in 2009, the highest office in the profession. He then resumed his post as Atlanta Fire Chief in 2010.After the city of Atlanta terminated Cochran's employment because of his Christian faith and beliefs, ADF represented him in a federal lawsuit. A federal court ruled the city of Atlanta discriminated against Cochran's religious views and violated his First Amendment rights, and the city of Atlanta agreed to a favorable settlement.Prior to his role at ADF, Cochran served as chief operating officer of Elizabeth Baptist Church in Atlanta. He is the author of two books, a sought-after public speaker, and is an advocate for religious liberty and unity of the body of Christ.

This is Frank Gaffney with the Secure Freedom Minute. Surgeon General Vivek Murthy just declared “gun violence” a public health emergency. He wants “assault weapons” and magazines holding more than ten bullets banned. Fortunately, for those of us committed to the principle of self-defense and the unalienable, God-given right to “own and bear arms,” our Constitution provides a bulwark against the government's seizure of such arms. But Dr. Murthy's declaration follows the adoption of a new treaty that could have profound implications for gun owners and other Americans. According to constitutional attorney Michael Farris, it would require the the United States to change its laws in order to create a “focal point” to comply with the World Health Organization's directives. And WHO's Director General considers gun violence to be a “public health emergency of international concern.” The U.S. Senate must consider and reject this WHO treaty amending its International Health Regulations. This is Frank Gaffney.

Is the podcast space oversaturated? How challenging has it become to stand out? Michael Farris, host of Coffee and a Mike (@coffeeandamike), is a favorite show of Jim and Bob's, in their weekly playlist. He joins the Futures Edge show to discuss his journey into podcasting, the challenges of booking guests, the saturation of the podcasting space, and the importance of staying relevant. They also touch on political issues such as the state of the Republican Party, the erosion of economic freedom, and the polarization of society. The conversation explores the impact of technology, the importance of physical fitness, and the difficulty of convincing others to change their beliefs. The abortion issue comes up and its political implications. They discuss the lack of will to fight among Republicans and the tactics used by the left. They also touch on the importance of local government and community involvement. The conversation shifts to the fast-paced news cycle and its impact on public attention. They express their concerns about the lawlessness in cities like Chicago and the decline of the media. Takeaways: Starting a podcast can be challenging, but reaching out to people and building relationships can lead to interesting guests. The podcasting space may be saturated, but there is still room for unique voices and perspectives. The Republican Party is criticized for its lack of action and willingness to fight for important issues. The erosion of economic freedom, such as occupational licensing, can have a negative impact on individual liberties. Changing someone's beliefs or convincing them to see a different perspective can be difficult, especially in a polarized society. The abortion issue is a complex and divisive topic, and different approaches to addressing it can have political implications. Republicans lack the will to fight and are easily defeated by the left Local government and community involvement are crucial in today's political climate The fast-paced news cycle makes it difficult to keep up with important issues Lawlessness in cities like Chicago is a growing concern Chapters 00:00 Introduction and Podcasting Journey 06:08 The Saturation of the Podcasting Space 13:01 Lack of Optimism and Republican Party 22:17 Impact of Technology and Physical Fitness 27:22 Difficulty of Changing Beliefs 33:15 The Abortion Issue and Political Implications 37:38 The Impact of the Fast-Paced News Cycle 41:31 The Lawlessness in Cities like Chicago 46:56 The Decline of the Media 55:30 Gratitude for Listeners and the Importance of Support This episode is sponsored by Mint Mobile. $15 for your first 3 months.
