A couple of weeks ago as I was reading the Gospel of Luke, I felt impressed by the Lord to go through this wonderful Gospel on our Pastor Chats after we finished the Book of Joshua. It could also be that our grandson Luke has been on our hearts and minds over these past several weeks with his surgeries. He actually is named Michael Luke. And we still can't thank you enough for your prayers for him through that difficult and challenging time. He appears to be doing well and recovering quickly with everything working properly.   The Gospel of Luke is a very interesting book. It is probable that Luke was a Gentile, making him the only non-Jewish author in Scripture. The early church unanimously attributed the third Gospel to Luke, and all the ancient manuscripts we have of the Gospel bear his name. Early Church fathers like Irenaeus, Ignatius, Clement, and Tertullian affirmed Luke's authorship, considering his account of the life of Christ authoritative and inspired Scripture. We have no reason to doubt the traditional attribution of the book to Luke, and Luke is properly acknowledged as the author of the Gospel bearing his name.   Dr. Luke is named only three times in the New Testament: in Colossians 4:14; 2 Timothy 4:11; and Philemon 24. He wrote Acts (compare Luke 1:1-4 with Acts 1:1) and traveled with Paul (note the "we" sections in Acts 16:10-17; 20:4-15; 21:1-18, and 27:1-28:16). Paul called Luke, “the beloved physician” (Colossians 4:14). One well-known commentator believes that it is possible that Luke was the man in the dream that Paul had of a “man of Macedonia” asking for Paul and Silas to come there and help them (Acts 16:9-10).   Luke wrote a book that is filled with good news for everybody. His key message is, "For the Son of man is come to seek and to save that which was lost" (Luke 19:10). He presents Jesus Christ as the compassionate Son of man, who came to live among sinners, love them, help them, and die for them.   In this Gospel you meet individuals as well as crowds, women and children as well as men, poor people as well as rich people, and sinners along with saints. It's a book with a message for everybody, because Luke's emphasis is on the universality of Jesus Christ and His salvation: "good tidings of great joy, which shall be to all people" (Luke 2:10). No wonder he began his book with detailed accounts of the births of two important babies! No wonder he emphasized Christ's sympathy for hurting people! He wrote with the mind of a careful historian and with the heart of a loving physician.   The Gospel of Luke was written for Theophilus ("lover of God"), probably a Roman official who had trusted Christ and now needed to be established in the faith. It's also possible that Theophilus was a seeker after truth who was being taught the Christian message, because the word translated “instructed” in Luke 1:4 gives us our English word catechumen, "someone who is being taught the basics of Christianity."   The life and message of Christ were so important that many books had already been written about Him, but not everything in them could be trusted. Luke wrote his Gospel so that his readers might have an accurate and orderly narrative of the life, ministry, and message of Jesus Christ. Luke had carefully researched his material, interviewed eyewitnesses, and listened to those who had ministered the Word.   Most important, Luke had the guidance of the Holy Spirit. The phrase “from the very first” comes from the Greek word, “anothen”, and can be translated "from above," as it is in John 3:31 and 19:11. It speaks of the inspiration of the Spirit of God on the message that Luke wrote.   I'm looking forward to our journey with you through this wonderful Gospel.   God bless!

“Then I heard a loud voice from the temple saying to the seven angels, "Go and pour out the bowls of the wrath of God on the earth." So the first went and poured out his bowl upon the earth, and a foul and loathsome sore came upon the men who had the mark of the beast and those who worshiped his image." First, again thanks to everyone for your prayers for Michael Luke, our new 1lb 8oz baby that Kim and Chris and our family has been blessed with. Just wanted to give a brief update on him as you continue to pray. He basically continues to do fine. Of course, there are some complications that develop at this early stage in his life, but we have a great God and a wonderful team of health care workers looking after him. Again, thanks for your prayers! They mean everything to Luke, Kimberly, Chris and to all of us! Today, we are looking at Revelation 16. The Tribulation begins in chapter 4 with a worship scene in heaven. In chapter 5, the Lamb takes the seven-sealed book from the hand of God and again there is worship! In chapter 6, the Lamb begins to open the seven seals and as they are opened, we get a glimpse of the events that take place during the first three and half years of the Tribulation. When the seventh seal is opened then the seven trumpet judgments begin in chapter 8 and go through chapter 9. I personally believe that these terrible judgments take place in the first three and a half years of the Tribulation. In Revelation 10 through 14 we have an interlude that happens in the middle of the Tribulation where we are given more detail about the two witnesses and events that take place in both the first and second half of the Tribulation. Then finally chapter 15 ends with one of the living creatures giving the seven golden bowls of God's final judgements that will take place in the last three and half years. Seven seals, seven trumpets and seven bowls. This signifies that the these judgements of God are just, deserving, final and complete! I get the ideal that the first bowl judgment of “a foul and loathsome sore came upon the men who had the mark of the beast and those who worshiped his image”, happens at the beginning of the last three and half years. This vial judgment reminds us of the sixth plague in Egypt (Ex. 9:8-12; note also Deut. 28:27, 35). Only those who have submitted to "the beast" and who have rejected the warning of the first angel will experience this judgment (Rev. 14:6-7). Revelation 16:10-11 suggests that these sores do not disappear; for by the time of the fifth bowl, people are still in pain from the first judgment. Yet their pain will not cause them to repent (see Rev. 9:20-21). William R. Newell, a wonderful Bible commentator, used to say, "If men are not won by grace, they will never be won." It is an awesome thought to consider almost the entire population of the world suffering from a painful malady that nothing can cure. No vaccine will be produced to fight it. The fact that this sore is called foul might mean that it has a terrible odor along with an awful look that causes terrible pain and suffering. Constant pain affects a person's disposition so that he finds it difficult to get along with other people. Human relations during that period will certainly be at their worst. This is only the first bowl judgment! Six more are to come that are even more devastating! May the Lord help us to warn our family and friends of this terrible time that is to come. God bless!

First, again thanks to everyone for your prayers for Michael Luke. Just wanted to give a brief update on him as you continue to pray. He continues to do fine. Yesterday there was some blood pressure challenges but as of last night it was back to normal and everything else has remained steady and he is stable! Kimberly was able to go home yesterday but Luke will be in the NIC Unit for several months as he continues to develop and grow! Again, thanks for your prayers! They mean everything to Luke and to all of us! Today, we are looking at Revelation 16. If you review Revelation 8 you will notice the parallel between the trumpet judgments and the vial judgments here in Revelation 16. In each case, the judgment affects the same things, but the vial judgments are more severe. It seems too that the vial judgments occur in quick succession, aimed especially at the Beast and his satanic kingdom. The first three and a half years of the Tribulation were indeed a terrible time as the seals were opened and the trumpets sounded their judgements. It appears that at least two billion people are killed by the plagues that take place during this time. But now, the period of time that Jesus called the “Great Tribulation”, will take place with these seven last bowls of God's wrath being poured out. The "loud voice" out of the temple commands the seven angels to pour out the contents of their vials (Rev. 16:1), after which he announces "It is done!" (Rev. 16:17) The "mystery of God" is finished! (Rev. 10:7) The martyrs in glory had asked, "How long?" (Rev. 6:9-11) and now their cry would be answered. The Bible provides the only true beacon of light and hope in the darkness and despair of the world. In its pages are comforting, encouraging, and affirming words of the peace, goodness, joy, and love of salvation. Believers are reassured as they read of God's love and promises and of their eternal inheritance in His kingdom. But while the Bible is a book of hope, it is also a book of judgment. Because God loves righteousness and faith, He must hate sin and unbelief. He cannot love truth unless He hates lies. He cannot love goodness unless He hates wickedness. He cannot reward unless He also punishes. The Old Testament repeatedly warns of coming judgment, particularly in those passages that describe the final Day of the Lord judgments (Joel 2:28-32; Zech. 14:1; Mal. 4:1, 5). The New Testament also reveals God's judgment of sinners. John the Baptist, the forerunner of the Messiah, preached a confronting, even harsh message of judgment. The apostle Paul spoke of "the God who inflicts wrath" (Rom. 3:5), noted that "the wrath of God will come upon the sons of disobedience" (Col. 3:6), and described the terrifying time "when the Lord Jesus will be revealed from heaven with His mighty angels in flaming fire, dealing out retribution to those who do not know God and to those who do not obey the gospel of our Lord Jesus. These will pay the penalty of eternal destruction, away from the presence of the Lord and from the glory of His power" (2 Thess. 1:7-9). Hebrews 10:26-31 concludes with these words, "Vengeance is Mine, I will repay." And again, "The Lord will judge His people." It is a terrifying thing to fall into the hands of the living God.” Today, is a day of grace! But one day it will be to late for those who refuse to repent! God bless!

First, again let me thank everyone for your prayers for our daughter, Kimberly, her husband Chris and their new micro preemie Michael Luke. Luke is continuing to do fine. All his vitals are stable and a machine is breathing for him as his lungs develop. We appreciate your continued prayers specifically this week for comfort on vent, blood pressure doesn't go down, his head/brain and no bleeding, no infection, being mindful of noise and over stimulation, and bruising will heal. Edith and I were allowed to spend time with Luke yesterday and prayed special prayers over him. Thanks again for your continued prayers. Verse 1 indicates that the angels with the seven vials (bowls) carry the seven last plagues. You will recall that in Rev. 10:7, Christ had announced that, with the pouring out of these vials, the "mystery of God" would be completed and there would be no more delay. In these seven last judgments, God will complete His wrath. Satan at this time is pouring out terrible wrath upon believers, the Jews especially (12:12); but God will have the last word. Once again, the temple of heaven is opened. The earthly temple has been taken over by the Beast (Rev. 13:13-18; 2 Thes. 2:3-4), but the Beast cannot touch the heavenly temple. All he can do is blaspheme it (13:6). The opening of the temple is another reminder that God will keep His covenant with His people, Israel. Seven angels come out of the temple. Seven is the number of completion, and with seven angels delivering these vials of wrath, God's judgments are completed on earth. The angels come out of the holy of holies, where the ark and the tables of the law are kept. The wicked world has defied and disobeyed God's Law, but now judgment is coming. The robes of these angels signify holiness and royalty. The white linen reminds us of the dress of the OT priests; the golden girdle speaks of the king. This is another reminder that the saints of God are "kings and priests" (Rev. 1:6), a royal priesthood. Their dress also takes us back to the description of Christ in 1:13; for He is the High Priest after the order of Melchizedek. One of the living creatures delivers the bowls of wrath to the angels. All of nature (symbolized by these four creatures) will taste of the wrath of God. The heavenly temple is now filled with smoke from the glory of God. When the OT tabernacle was dedicated, God's glory filled the tent (Ex. 40:34-35), as it did when the OT temple was dedicated (2 Chron. 7:1-4). During these events no smoke mingled with the glory. Here, however, we have smoke, usually a symbol of judgment (9:2). When the Prophet Isaiah saw the glory of God, the whole house was filled with the smoke (Isa. 6:4). This was because Isaiah's message was one of judgment as well as mercy. John states that nobody in heaven was allowed into the temple until the bowls of wrath had been poured out. No saint or angel could go into the temple to intercede for the nations of the world. The nations were "beyond intercession"; God's long-suffering had come to the end, and His judgment was about to fall. Students of prophecy are not agreed on the chronological arrangement of the seals, trumpets, and vials. I seem to get the ideal that that the first six seals will be broken and the seven trumpets will sound during the first three and one-half years, and that the vials covers the last three and one-half years, and mainly at the very end. We might not be able to figure out the exact timing of these coming judgments but we can be sure that they will come to the earth during this time. May the Lord help us today to be like the Thessalonian Christians who “turned to God from idols to serve the living and true God, and wait for His Son from heaven, whom He raised from the dead, even Jesus who delivers us from the wrath to come.” (1 Thessalonians 1:9-10)

First, let me thank everyone for your prayers for our daughter, Kimberly and her husband Chris. They were expecting their first child and Kimberly was about twenty-two weeks in the pregnancy. Yesterday evening, little Michael Luke decided to come early and was born very premature at one pound and eight ounces. He survived the birth and is presently in the NIC unit. We would appreciate your continued prayers! BTW, Luke is our eighteenth grandchild! Life can be very tough and difficult and often throws us a curve ball very unexpectedly. We never know what we might face in our lives on any given day. But as we said yesterday, we can always have the peace of Jesus in our hearts and minds and experience victory in our lives no matter what we face! (John 6:33) These Tribulation saints have been martyred and they no doubt had suffered in unimaginable ways because they refused to take the mark of the beast and yet they are singing a song of victory! You would think that if someone suffers and are killed by their enemy that they lost! But this scripture says they had victory over the beast. I love what John calls the Antichrist here, “the beast”. Even for us today, anything that is terrible, mean, awful, cruel and causes suffering is a beast! We all face “beast” and have to deal with them in our lives! They often show up in the form of people. Or they appear as major problems in our finances or even in our health or in a tragedy that we go through. And we never know when they will appear. The people of Israel had just been delivered from the cruel tyranny of Pharaoh and had marched out of Egypt untouched. The Egyptians were thrilled they were leaving were giving them tremendous amounts of gold and silver and jewelry. You can imagine the euphoria that they were feeling. They were free after years of hardship and bondage! They were finally going home to the Promise Land of their ancestors. But they didn't go far, until they heard the sound of horses and chariots behind them and turn to see the entire army of Pharaoh and Egypt coming after them and they find themselves between a rock and a sea. Just when they think they are free, they face the danger of being destroyed or taken back into slavery. But then God does one of the greatest miracles in the Bible! He parts the Red Sea and they are able to march across on dry land and the same sea destroys their enemy behind them. That's often how it works in our lives. Just after a wonderful experience or blessing we are overwhelmed with a terrible tragedy or health issue. The Tribulation saints had just found salvation and forgiveness of sins and almost immediately they face the “beast”. They suffered and many are killed. But in this passage, it says they had victory! In their song, the Tribulation saints praise God's works as well as His ways. The earth-dwellers certainly would not praise God for His works, and they would never understand His ways. God's works are great and marvelous, and His ways are just and true. There is no complaint here about the way God permitted these people to suffer! It would save us a great deal of sorrow if we would acknowledge God's sovereignty in this same way today! "The Lord is righteous in all His ways, and holy in all His works" (Ps. 145:17). My friend, we can always have victory in Jesus! “Yet in all these things we are more than conquerors through Him who loved us. For I am persuaded that neither death nor life, nor angels nor principalities nor powers, nor things present nor things to come, nor height nor depth, nor any other created thing, shall be able to separate us from the love of God which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.”(Romans 8:37-39)
