Mike Gifford from Civic Actions joins us to discuss the Web Almanac, a remarkable project analyzing 17 million websites and 83 terabytes of data to track accessibility trends across the web. He shares insights about comparative accessibility performance across countries, revealing how European websites generally outperform American ones despite the US having a 30-year head start in accessibility legislation.• Web Almanac provides annual snapshots comparing accessibility across millions of websites• European government websites show better accessibility than US government sites due to the Web Accessibility Directive• Content management systems that prioritize accessibility lead to more accessible websites overall• Educational institutions (.edu domain) show stronger accessibility performance in the US• Alt text remains problematic even on otherwise accessible websites• Website accessibility typically degrades over time as content refreshes and staff changes• Automation and AI will be necessary to maintain accessibility at scale• Data can drive competitive improvements between institutions and countries• Individual contributors can sometimes make more impact than government institutionsJoin our community discussions on Blue Sky every Tuesday night to continue the conversation about web accessibility and digital inclusion. Today we are talking about the Web Sustainability Guidelines, How sustainability applies to the web, and how your website can be more sustainable with guests Mike Gifford and Andy Blum. We'll also cover LB Plus as our module of the week. For show notes visit: www.talkingDrupal.com/424 Topics What are the Web sustainability guidelines Do they only apply to environmental impact When we think about sustainability we think of funding, does WSG speak to that Why are the WSG important What is the best way to implement WSG How do the WSG's apply to Drupal Have the WSG's been finalized Are they open source How can someone get involved Resources Web Sustainability Guidelines Carbon footprint of your website Eggcorns Andy's blog post w3c/sustyweb Sustainable web design working group Green Web Foundation Guests Mike Gifford - mgifford.medium.com @mgifford Hosts Nic Laflin - nLighteneddevelopment.com nicxvan John Picozzi - epam.com johnpicozzi Melissa Bent - linkedin.com/in/melissabent merauluka MOTW Correspondent Martin Anderson-Clutz - @mandclu Layout Builder Plus Brief description: Have you ever wanted to make Layout Builder easier and more intuitive for content creators? There are a few modules that can help with that, but today we're going to talk about one called Layout Builder Plus Brief history How old: Originally created in Apr 2022 Versions available: 2.0.1 release, compatible with Drupal 10 and 11 Maintainership Actively maintained, latest release just a week ago Number of open issues: 2, both bugs, but both marked as fixed Usage stats: 9 sites Maintainer(s): Tim Bozeman of Tag1 Module features and usage Provides an overhaul of the Layout Builder UI, to make it easier for content creators: Show a curated list of promoted blocks with icons, with lesser-used blocks available in a separate tab Once a block is placed it shows automatically generated content, instead of asking the user to fill out a form before they can see what it will look like Editing the content of a block happens in an overlay instead of the settings tray, so it can use more of the screen Moves the Save Layout and other action buttons to the bottom of the page Also adds some nice capabilities to Layout Builder, including: Drag and drop entire sections Change the layout of an existing section, even if it has blocks in it Clone and update existing blocks Finally, it includes a submodule to integrate with the Section Library module, which allows for a section within a layout to be saved so it can be reused again and again I'll also note that this is a module nominated by one of our listeners in the #talkingdrupal channel of the Drupal slack workspace, so if there's a module you'd like to hear about in this segment, drop us a note in there

Unlike in the private sector, governments don't choose their users. That's why even more important in the public sector to make sure that technology and digital transformation efforts work for everyone. It doesn't matter how innovative or efficient digital technology can be for public institutions if the implementation of those actively exclude people from accessing and benefiting from public services and assets. That's why principles like accessibility, sustainability and openness are so important when we think about digital transformation.Joining Ryan to talk about this is Mike Gifford, an Associate with Think Digital, and a Senior Strategist at CivicActions, a technology consultancy that helps government deliver better public services through modern technology and design.Watch the Video Version of the Episodehttps://youtu.be/rmO5T7zQtU4
Today's episode discusses how Drupal is still alive in today's generation and it will help us understand why we should go to Drupal and what makes Drupal standout from the other CMS that are coming out today. “What sets Drupal apart from all the others, it's built for authors to have something in-place that allows non-technical people to work on creating content and managing content together, that's something different than most new CMS that are coming out.” Brad Anderson, CEO of TechBridge, a Salt Lake City IT staffing company, and Bobby Glen James, Author, Speaker, and founder of BoTecha IT Support, along with guest speaker Mike Gifford, Senior Strategic at CivicActions, hear these tech experts talk about how CivicActions is using technology as a disruptor of the Industry in this week's episode of The New IT Podcast. On the third anniversary of the release of the first episode of MBSing, MBS holed up in a studio and took 35 calls from past guests of the show. The topics ranged from specific episode updates to current concerns to catching up. Here are the first eight sandwiched between some sweet voicemails: Sarah Shockey, whose new show Marty and Sarah Love Wrestling you should give a listen. Mike Gifford, who laments the passing of Shake, Rattle, and Read in Uptown Stephanie Corkery, who has nowhere near enough time to describe our colonic experience Andy Herren, who edits his love of lying to include always lying to Big Brother fans and not being mean to people Mike Migdall, who called from the eye of a chill storm Wyn Evans, who beautifully spoke on human connectedness and empathy Adam Levin, who thinks our conversation about failure helped him move on and values uninterrupted conversation Jon Pernisek, who has his own How Rude podcast and chatted with me about NBC's The Wiz and upcoming Emerald City Steve Nelson, who applied to grad school poetry programs since his ep. Jimmy Pennington, who is now thinking he should've spent his ep talking about Harry Potter. Thanks to Cards Against Humanity, The Chicago Podcast Cooperative, and Lizzo.

Mike Gifford graced MBSing with his presence for a frank conversation on companionship, or lack thereof. We cover ground from Mike's (late) introduction to masterbation, a peer into his soul-searching as a lifelong single person, a recent experience of the grass not being green at all on the other side, and his feelings about late Justice Scalia.
PRESIDENT BLOOD! By which we mean, there is the blood of a US President on this show (but not on this show's hands). That's right, Harry S Truman's great-grandson, Wes Daniel, joins Xander, Grush, and returning guess (and Truman super-super-super-double-fan) Mike Gifford to drink some shit whisky that tastes like sour apples. Put this podcast in your skull-holes for the standard mix of (very real) love advice from Dear Grush's Guts, a PSA from the future, and a spot from one of our (extra real) sponsors. All that plus a grown man basically losing his shit over President Truman (Mike, not Truman's actual relative). What'd'ya need, a handy? You too cool to listen to this? Eh? It's finally here! The podcast has triumphed over technological disasters and laziness! It has not yet triumphed over exclamation points! Xander, Grush, Sean Hutchison, and first time guest Mike Gifford rate (well, suffer through) their first Mezcal while spending way, way too much time talking about which of them are attractive enough for Mike to have sex with or fat enough for Sean to use as a without-a-woman-last-resort. We would say "you just had to be there" but that is: a) a dumb phrase, and b) not the case since you can just give it a listen...the ole college try with your ears. And for iTunes, here are such search terms: comedy, alcohol, booze, review, jokes, silly, Chicago, stand up, improv, mittens.
