Dan, Corey, and Bel "The Bodysnatcher" bring you the latest in culture, domestic politics, and the geo-political landscape with a heavy injection of opinion and humor. In today's addition of "Two Intellectual Idiots Fostering Political and Cultural Literacy" Dan, Corey, and Bel "The Bodysnatcher" take YOU, the disenfranchised or politically homeless sane person into: 1) The Vice Presidential Debate where midwest niceness runs the show. Tim Walz dropped the chili, and JD Vance politely declined to eat it off the floor. There was lots of bad policy, with a little bit of gratuitous agreement mixed in. 2) Elon Musk is censoring journalists for political reasons. Is anyone actually surprised? 3) The Eastern Port workers strike. Yes... shit is gonna get expensive and sometimes unions are nothing more than cartels and thuggish mobs. AND MORE!! Generational divides in American politics are nothing new, but they seem particularly striking now as the oldest Millennials turn 40 this year. This generation has different lived experiences than its predecessors, but has been sidelines from political power as Baby Boomers live longer and benefit from incumbency advantages. Charlotte Alter has spent the past four years documenting these dynamics and join us this week to discuss.Alter is a senior correspondent at Time magazine and author of The Ones We've Been Waiting For: How a New Generation of Leaders Will Transform America. The book covers national-level politicians like Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and Elise Stefanik, as well as local leaders like mayors Svante Myrick (Ithaca, New York) and Michael Tubbs (Stockton, California). Alter's reporting defines the class of young leaders who are remaking the nation–how grappling with 9/11 as teens, serving in Iraq and Afghanistan, occupying Wall Street and protesting with Black Lives Matter, and shouldering their way into a financially rigged political system has shaped the people who will govern the future.Additional InformationThe Ones We've Been Waiting For: How a New Generation of Leaders Will Transform AmericaCharlotte Alter on TwitterThinking Is Cool podcastRelated EpisodesWill Millennials disrupt democracy?
Dan and Corey open by discussing how they met. It had to do with family, beer, and BBQ. And it was all thanks to Jesus (But not in the way you think).2:20 - "We're Tired of the Bullshit." The tit-for-tat moral equivalence is exhausting. It's time for the "silent middle" to make themselves heard. We're the biggest, quietest, and most underrepresented group in the country. Free-thinking, moderate Millennials take the biggest brunt as they find themselves stuck in a generational war between "Boomers" and "Get Z". Being "in the middle" is the biggest sin right now.8:00- "The Recalibration of America's Moral Compass."Millennials are on the verge of taking the baton. How do we want to be remembered? Do we want to be another generation that refuses to embrace change? Do we want to be the generation that accepts all change just for change's sake? Probably neither. 10:00 "Being Wrong Is A Good Thing"Get ready to be upset sometimes. If you are going to assume that all Trump voters are racist, inbred, idiots...OR...you're going to assume that "Liberal" is just another word for "Transgendered Communist"...You're probably wrong. And that's okay. And it may just be because you're just too busy to use your critical thinking skills. So you pick up your opinion for the local convenience store that is Legacy and Social Media. 15:00 "Let's Build A Community of Free Thinkers"Opinions are rarely evil or felt with malice when they are well thought out and analyzed internally. And then expressed in a rational and nuanced form. They are not meant to be force fed to others with the expectation that they will comply. "Intellectual" is NOT a dirty word! Meaningful words are not meaningful anymore. Reality is not a game to be won. Political balance....is okay. 19:50 "Make Thinking Sexy Again""Us vs Them" requires almost zero thought. Good faith conversations are how we make it through. Walking away from a difficult conversation with questions is how they should end...every time. Modifying and changing your opinion is GROWTH. We lose our prejudices and biases with experience and growth. Should we be defined by them? 34:30 "Social Justice, Allies, and Ego"42:25 Previewing Season 1 - "Understanding America's Social Civil War (Real or Window Dressing)" *Music Presented Under Creative Commons: "Confused" by Makaih Beats
Millennial politics comes into its own. The untold history of citizenship stripping in America. Plus Bill Press on where the Republican Party goes from here. Author David Freedlander on the AOC generation and its political evolution. Author Amanda Frost on citizen stripping from Dred Scott to the dreamers. Plus Bill Press with former Northern Virginia Congresswoman Barbara Comstock on why the GOP needs to distance itself from Trump. David Freedlander The Trump presidency continues to reshape the political landscape, and that includes a resurgent young left. That’s the subject of a new book from David Freedlander, and at its center is the rise of Representative Alexandria Ocasio Cortez. Amanda Frost In her newest book, author Amanda Frost takes us into the little-known story of when and why our government has made the choice to revoke citizenship. It’s a practice that expresses the history of racism and xenophobia in America and remains all too present today. Barbara Comstock And now, Bill Press with former Northern Virginia Congresswoman Barbara Comstock on why the GOP is better off without Trump. Jim Hightower Banker Greed That Would Even Shock Woody Guthrie Woody Guthrie had a lot to say about the greed of bankers who made crop loans at usurious interest rates to hardscrabble farmers, then foreclosed on them when they couldn’t pay off the loans, leaving thousands of farm families homeless. Woody mocked them with a sarcastic anthem, singing “I’m a jolly banker, jolly banker am I.” He also penned a stinging verse about their thievery: “Some’ll rob with a six gun/ some with a fountain pen.” But even this populist poet of the people would be astonished by the shameless grabbiness of today’s farm lenders.

Lauren Baer, a former senior policy advisor at the State Department and candidate for Congress in 2018, joined the Millennial Politics podcast to talk about how foreign relations impact the response to a pandemic like this one and how the State Department under President Obama would have reacted differently. During this episode, Sam and Nathan ask Baer how the lackluster response by the United States government to coronavirus will affect our nation's standing on the world stage and what that could mean for future global emergencies. She also discusses what solutions she would be pushing for right now if she were in Congress and gives us some rapid-fire answers to big policy proposals such as universal basic income and a federal jobs guarantee. Baer also touched on President Trump's announcement of his intent to fire the State Department Inspector General Steve Linick and the circumstances surrounding this situation. She discusses how unusual it is for a president to fire multiple Inspectors General in a short period of time like Trump has done and how it sets a dangerous precedent and should be cause for concern.

Mandatory masks wherever physical distancing is impossible, along with weekly tests for those lacking antibodies is one doctor's vision of a new normal. Dr. Angela Rasmussen, Virologist at Columbia University's School of Public Health and a vForbes Contributor, came on the Millennial Politics podcast this week. As an Associate Research Scientist at the Center for Infection and Immunity at Columbia University, Dr. Rasmussen studies viral pathogens like Ebola, Bird Flu, MERS, SARS, and now COVID-19. "The fastest we've ever developed a vaccine was for the Mumps, and that took four years. To say we'll develop one in a year and a half isn't impossible, but it is extremely ambitious." On this episode, Nathan and Sam ask Dr. Rasmussen about the varying methods of containment different countries are using around the world to combat COVID-19, what a cohesive national testing strategy could look like in the United States, and articulated in her opinion what the United States will need to do in order to be able to start opening back up. And despite ending on a positive note acknowledging the promising data from treatment trials of the experimental drug Remdesivir, Dr. Rasmussen poured cold water on having a vaccine ready within the next 12-18 months; saying that in order to accomplish this herculean task, vaccine researchers may need to skip phases of development that were previously standard protocol. For more information, or if you'd like to continue the conversation, Dr. Rasmussen can be found on Twitter @angie_rasmussen and Nathan Rubin can be found @NathanHRubin.

Zellnor Myrie is running for New York State Senate in District 20. If you caught our last pod with Alessandra Biaggi, you’re already familiar with New York’s strange State Senate. For seven years, a group of turncoat politicians have run as Democrats, been elected as Democrats, and immediately caucused with Republicans in the New York State Senate. They formed a conference, called the Independent Democratic Conference (IDC) to vote as a bloc, ceding control of the chamber and preventing progressive policies from being sent to Governor Cuomo’s desk. Everything from codifying Roe v. Wade at the state-level, to passing Universal Health Care, or the DREAM Act, and even to more local issues like Affordable Housing, Speed Cameras, and the funding of Public Schools, has been blocked as a result of the IDC. Enter Zellnor Myrie. State Senator Jesse Hamilton, the incumbent in Zellnor Myrie’s district, is one of the IDC Members, and Zellnor has had enough. He thinks the time is now to knock him out. With the typical machinery at-hand, politicians are turning on each other trying to either oust the incumbent, or keep him in power. Zellnor is finding himself right in the middle of it all, and he’s staying focused on the mission at hand and rolling with the punches. On today’s pod with Nathan Rubin of Millennial Politics, we talk with Zellnor about his race for the State Senate against incumbent Jesse Hamilton and the IDC.
Welcome to a special crossover edition of our pod with Nathan Rubin of Millennial Politics. We’re joined by Alessandra Biaggi, a candidate for New York State Senate and a longtime member of our community. Alessandra is challenging the leader of breakaway Democrats known as the IDC, who sold out their district for personal gain and ceded control to Republicans. Her incumbent opponent, State Senator Jeff Klein, is the leader of the Independent Democratic Conference (or IDC). He ran as a Democrat, was elected as a Democrat, and purports to govern as a Democrat, while caucusing with Republicans. As a result of the IDC and Republican control in the New York State Senate, progressive legislation passed by the New York State Assembly dies time and time again. Democrats have a Super-Majority in the Assembly, but year after year, legislation that should be a hallmark of a “progressive” state like New York never reached the Governor’s desk and never becomes law. Alessandra is running on a platform of Affordable Housing, expanding the electorate through small “d” democratic reforms, criminal justice reform, women’s reproductive rights, LGBTQ civil rights, and more.
In our first ever crossover podcast episode, Nathan Rubin of Millennial Politics joins Ravi Gupta of The Arena to chat with New York State Senate candidate, Alessandra Biaggi. Biaggi is a lawyer and activist, and first-time candidate running against an incumbent who has turned his back on the people of his district and sold out his fellow Democrats in Albany. In this fast-paced interview, you'll learn about Alessandra's opponent, why this isn't just another State Senate Race, and her priorities if elected in 2018.

On the latest episode of the Millennial Politics podcast, we interview Dr. Michael Ralph, Professor at NYU and creator of the Treasury of Weary Souls. The Treasury of Weary Souls is the world’s most comprehensive database of enslaved Africans who built America. Ralph and his team compiled more than 1,300 records of Life Insurance policies as a way to identify, track, and better understand the mechanics of slavery. The Treasury of Weary Souls highlights the pivotal contributions of skilled slaves to the nation's most lucrative and most dangerous antebellum enterprises, with specific data points on the enslaved human's skill set, occupation, and which corporations were willing to write the policy. Perhaps most striking, the database also contains fascinating points on financial firms who continue to profit from slave insurance policies today. While these corporations are not the same as they existed over 150 years ago, their legal corporation still exists (AIG, Aetna, New York Life Insurance). We had the opportunity to sit down with Dr. Ralph for our first in-studio recording at ACME Hall Studios in Brooklyn.
I talked to Nathan Rubin, the founder of Millennial Politics, about young people being shocked out of apathy by Donald Trump, Twitter's bot problem, and the potential for new technologies to further erode our ability to discern fact from fiction.
When Lauren Underwood was attending a town hall with her current Congressman, someone asked a simple question. Where did Rep. Hultgren stand on the repeal of the Affordable Care Act? He responded that he didn't support repealing the Affordable Care Act because it would hurt his constituents and lead to folks being unnecessarily kicked off their health insurance plans. While it appeased the crowd in the moment, Hultgren went back to Washington and did the exact opposite of what he told his constituents. He voted for repeal, and in the process, inspired Lauren Underwood to challenge him. A simple broken promise from her representative was a call to action, and now she's a force to be reckoned with. Endorsed by Senator Kirsten Gillibrand's Off The Sidelines PAC, The Arena Summit, and EMILY's List, Underwood has made national headlines. She's been featured on MSNBC, on the cover of TIME Magazine, and now on the Millennial Politics podcast. As a nurse and former Senior Health Advisor to the Obama Administration, Underwood is running on a platform of ensuring access to affordable healthcare, working to solve the opioid crisis, creating good paying jobs, and protecting civil rights for all people. We had the opportunity to chat with Lauren about her campaign, what it means to run for Congress as a young woman of color, and how she approaches hot-button issues in her district.
Adrienne Lever, Campaigns Director for Swing Left, joins us on the podcast to discuss Swing Left's efforts and strategy to win back the House by focusing on the ever-expanding list of swing districts that Millennial Politics too has been focusing on.
