Recent polls indicate that feelings of patriotism are at an all-time low in the United States. This is especially the case for younger Americans, who are less likely than their older counterparts to describe themselves as patriotic, and less inclined to participate in displays of patriotism. On one hand this is nothing new: According to a Pew Research Center study, the generational divide has played a role in whether a person identifies as patriotic since at least 2003. And, as Sara Pequeño pointed out in an article for USA Today, boomers who call themselves patriots today were once "protesting the Vietnam War by marching in the streets and burning American flags."   This also comes at a time when religious affiliation is on the wane. And the discussion around patriotism in the United States is tangled up in ideas about faith, God, and divine will. For instance, one PRRI poll found that 44% of people surveyed think God has granted the United States a special role in human history.    But is this what patriotism means? How should people of faith think about their obligations to their country?    On this episode of Glad You Asked, the hosts talk to religion scholar and public intellectual Dr. Lewis Brogdon, who was recently appointed executive director of JustFaith Ministries. It's the beginning of September, so my chance to chat with Ellen Bayens of theceliacscene.com about articles and studies she has brought to our attention over the past month. During August, Ellen visited the Kinnikinnick storefront in Edmonton and the pictures she took of the amazing baked goods would make any celiac's mouth water. My Visit to Kinnikinnick Foods' Store Front in Edmonton Ellen published a study about teens with celiac disease and the link with body image and potential mental health issues – this is a must read for parents of celiac children. There is good news in that the teens who strictly adhered to the gluten free diet were less likely to have body image and anxiety issues. Body Image Dissatisfaction, Depression & Anxiety in Celiac Teens The big news on the scientific front is a newly formulated “atlas” of the cells in the gut differentiate which cells are involved in the gluten reaction. This new discovery will aid researchers world-wide in targeting therapies and even a cure in the future. Traditionally, Sant Mat and the yoga philosophy have advocated the lacto-vegetarian diet: abstinence from meat, fish, fowl, and eggs, but allowed dairy. Vegan means complete abstinence from all animal products and strictly adhering to a plant-based diet: no dairy, eggs, or meat of any kind, or products made from animals. Based on the current cruel practices of the dairy industry in India and around the world that violate the principle of ahimsa or non-violence, plus all the scores of medical studies showing that dairy consumption adversely affects our health and well-being, I believe if they were here today, the classic Saints such as Mahavira, Guru Kabir, Guru Nanak, Tukarama, Ravidas, Tulsi Das, Namdev, Dariya Sahib, etc...  would not only be advocating a vegetarian diet, but a vegan diet. These days, many are making this transition to vegan, including a growing percentage of those following Sant Mat. This is the compassionate direction that the vegetarian movement is headed in. (Vegetarianism is going vegan!)   In the East as well as in the West, the Gnostics and other advanced mystics: those serious practitioners of soul travel, inner Light and Sound meditation, have universally adhered to a plant-based diet. It's hard to reach more subtle states of tranquility in meditation on an animal flesh diet based on the suffering of other beings. "A man of spiritual intensity does not eat corpses." Education is a valuable thing, and it can be of great benefit to us depending on what we are wanting to learn. There are some reputable Bible colleges and seminaries providing solid Biblical teaching for those who want to understand God's Word. There are also institutions established where the label "Bible college" is in name only. Unfortunately, these types of schools lack credentials and even teach classes that seemingly indoctrinate with teachings associated with the New Apostolic Reformation. Some of these schools are even diploma mills where individuals can pay a fee to receive a degree, including a doctorate. Join me as we take a look at some Bible colleges affiliated with the teachings of the New Apostolic Reformation, and we consider if these represent sound Biblical teaching and accreditation.
