Summary: You mean Screamers have even more physical oddities? Yep! Join Kiersten to find out about more anatomical anomalies of Screamers. For my hearing impaired followers, a complete transcript of this podcast follows the show notes on Podbean Show Notes: Ornithology 3rd Edition by Frank B. Gill “A peculiar association: the skin and the subcutaneous diverticula of the Southern Screamer (Chauna torquata, Anserifomes), by Mariana B. J. Music written and performed by Katherine Camp Transcript (Piano music plays) Kiersten - This is Ten Things I Like About…a ten minute, ten episode podcast about unknown or misunderstood wildlife. (Piano music stops) Welcome to Ten Things I Like About… I'm Kiersten, your host, and this is a podcast about misunderstood or unknown creatures in nature. Some we'll find right out side our doors and some are continents away but all are fascinating. This podcast will focus ten, ten minute episodes on different animals and their amazing characteristics. Please join me on this extraordinary journey, you won't regret it. In this episode we will continue with our anatomical anomalies. The seventh thing I like about Screamers is their unusual feather pattern and subcutaneous air pockets. That is not a sentence I ever thought I would say, but I have had this experience many times since I've started Ten Things I Like About… Just like the last episode, we will have to do a little bit of background on avian anatomy before we jump into the Screamer anomalies, so let's get started. Birds are covered in feathers. When talking about nature you should not use all or never because there is always an exception to the rule, but we can safely say that all birds have feathers. Feathers help bird do lots of different things such as keep warm, keep cool, keep hidden, or advertise their presence, and of course fly. They have different types of feathers that cover their body, such as flight feathers, both primary and secondary that help them fly, tail feathers that help them during flight and balance while perching, downy feathers that lay close to the skin to help with temperature regulation, and bristles that are often seen near the eye or mouth. Feathers grow out of the skin from pores. They are not spread along the entire skin like the fur of most mammals. Avian feathers grow in tracts on the birds body. The concentration of the tracts can differ depending on the species of bird, for example, Tundra Swans, which have approximately 25,000 feathers, have 80% of those feathers on their head and neck, where as, songbirds have 2000 to 4000 feathers and only 30 to 40% are found on the head and neck. In between these track are patches of bare skin called apteria. There are nine major feather tracts. These names of the feather tract are not important for our purposes, but where they are located is pertinent. On most birds the feather tracts travel from the middle of the head at the base of the beak down the spine to the tail. There are more tracts on the tops of the wings from shoulder to wrist, along the side of the neck and belly, and long the legs. You may be thinking, “I have never seen big ‘ole bald spots on birds?” Well the feathers in the tracts lay flat and cover the apteria. That's why we don't see them. For any one you that have pet birds that you can handle and groom, know just what I'm talking about. Okay, what does this have to do with our Screamers? Well, Screamer feathers do not grow in tracts like other birds. They grow all over their body. Screamers have no apteria, no patches of bare skin. Why? We don't know. The other bird species that have this type of feather growth pattern are the flightless ratites including ostriches, emus, rheas, and cassowaries, as well as penguins, so what the flighted Screamers are doing with this pattern of feather growth, we're not entirely sure. But it is one more thing that makes Screamers unique. The second anatomical anomaly of Screamers that we are going to talk about in this episode is the odd subcutaneous air bubbles they possess. That is right, I said subcutaneous air bubbles. This is pretty odd, let's delve into it. First a bit of background into bird respiration. Birds do have lungs similar in structure to mammals but they function differently. Most bird species have two lungs attached to the trachea via two bronchi. Sounds pretty familiar, but the air flow is different. In mammals air flow is both in and out. Birds breathe in only one direction, but they have only one trachea. So how does this work? Air sacs that are part of their respiratory system. These sacs allow birds to utilize all the oxygen in each breath and disperse carbon dioxide back into the atmosphere while employing continuous, unidirectional, efficient flow of air. Amazing! This respiratory system it what allows birds to process enough oxygen to fly and prevent them from overheating when they are in flight. Pretty important stuff. Screamers have an oddity associated with their respiratory system. They have subcutaneous diverticula, also known as, pneumatic diverticula, subcutaneous air cells, or superficial air cavities, all over their body. These bubbles are full or air and lay between the skin and muscles. These structure appear to be extensions of their respiratory system. Why do they have these extra air sacs? Once again, we don't know. Screamers are a riddle wrapped in a mystery inside an enigma. But boy it does make them fun! We can make educated guesses as to why they might need these, such as Screamers fly at unusually high altitudes and the excess air sacs ma y help in buoyancy keeping the body light. This combined with their highly pneumatic bones that we learned about in the last episode could explain the extra air sacs. These subcutaneous air sacs may also help them extract as much oxygen out of thin air as possible. We do know that it gives them a strange crackling noise when they walk, and keeps them safe from hunters. The extra air sacs make them unappetizing to the human palate. Well, that's it for episode seven of Screamers and I hope you found it as fascinating as I did because my seventh favorite thing about them in their anatomical anomalies. If you're enjoying this podcast please recommend me to friends and family and take a moment to give me a rating on whatever platform your listening. It will help me reach more listeners and give the animals I talk about an even better chance at change. Join me next week for another exciting episode about Screamers. Doesn't it feel like 24 hours in a day seem to be getting shorter and shorter? No, our planet isn't spinning any faster, we're just getting busier! Keeping up with your school, work, and home responsibilities means there's no time left for you to take care of yourself. Well, don't sweat it! All you need is 1 minute a day to totally transform your physical and mental health! So, what does this “1 minute a day” involve? The answer is simple: just one easy-to-do exercise. No, it's not your traditional jumping jacks, squats, or planking. All you have to do is put your legs up on a wall! TIMESTAMPS: Put on something comfortable 1:17 Choose the right place for the exercise 1:41 What changes in your body you can expect 2:19 Improvement in your mental health 4:51 Other benefits 7:01 Precautions 8:12 #legsupthewall #yogaposes #mentalhealth Music by Epidemic Sound https://www.epidemicsound.com/ SUMMARY: You'll strengthen your leg and abdominal muscles as well as improve mobility and flexibility in your hips. Your blood circulation will improve. Elevating your legs like this increases the blood flow to your upper body, enriching it with oxygen. The 1-minute legs-up-the-wall exercise will prevent the development of varicose veins. This exercise will help you get rid of leg heaviness and fatigue that usually appear after an especially busy workday. For women who are menstruating, elevating your legs like this will help reduce the pain of menstrual cramps. You'll see improvements in your digestion and gastrointestinal health. Again, this has to do with combatting fluid retention and getting things circulating in your body. You'll feel more relaxed, both physically and emotionally. Putting your legs up the wall drastically improves breathing. It allows you to inhale more air, and, as a result, your breathing becomes calmer and more rhythmic. Do this exercise, and you'll have no problems getting some sleep each night. You'll feel a noticeable improvement in your mood. With all the physical and mental changes that come, you're bound to just feel better overall. Please remember to consult your doctor first before trying this exercise, especially if you have back problems. It should also go without saying that one minute of elevating our legs per day doesn't replace a full exercise regimen. Series: Chaos to CovenantTitle: "What's the Bible all about? God remembers his promises." Part 2Scripture: Genesis 8:1-9:17Luke 17:20-33; Hebrews 11:7-10The Bible is all about God's story. Here, Noah's story is a snapshot of the Bible's grand narrative—a holy God seeking to redeem, restore, and renew fallen creation by a merciful covenant through Jesus Christ.God remembers his promises to his people.INTRODUCTIONCONTEXTSERMON OUTLINECONCLUSIONNOTESOUTLINESQUESTIONS TO CONSIDER DISCUSSION QUESTIONSMAIN REFERENCES USEDMy opening prayer: Lord God, help us grow to be and do like Jesus, while abiding in him, and leading others to do the same. INTRODUCTIONStories of the brave, acts big and small, sacrifice and service are what we remember today. Like the story of Vietnam War hero JimmyG. Stewart, an Army staff sergeant from West Columbia, West Virginia - one of the 58,000 Americans who lost their lives in combat during the conflict. When five fellow Soldiers of his six-man squad were wounded near An Khe in May 1966, Stewart held his position to protect his men, crawling through heavy fire to retrieve ammunition from his comrades and tossing back enemy-thrown grenades. When reinforcements arrived, 23-year-old Stewart continued to fight and was eventually killed while holding his position. The wounded he gave his life to protect were recovered and evacuated. A year later, he was posthumously awarded the Medal of Honor. This year marks 50 years since the last combat troops left South Vietnam.I share this story for a few reasons relevant to today. Our veterans are potential stories like this. They willingly choose to put themselves in harms way for the sake of defending others from tyranny. On Memorial Day we remember those like Jimmy G. Stewart here for giving his life in the line of duty because he went above and beyond the call of duty to love others with his whole life. What a picture of Christ. We honor our veterans as they put themselves in a position to do that for others. They fight of an imperfect nation that is founded on principles gleaned in part from scripture that empowers her citizens to live differently in all of life. We remember these who have fallen and these who serve our country in this way, we see in Genesis 8:1 that God remembers his promises to Noah meaning he is moved to act mercifully on behalf of sinful people in this world. We will see how precious human life is to the Lord. Stewart saw it as worthy of his own which is at least in part why he was willing to sacrifice his own. At least twice in scripture, Rachel and Hannah, saw barren women be remembered by God and given a child, the desire of their heart. God sees you in your pain even if that pain is of your own making. He remembers and this moves him to act mercifully and redemptively. Redemption of sinful people is at the forefront of his loving acts. The thief on the cross calls on Jesus to remember him when they cross over. Jesus remembers him and says today you will be with me in paradise. This is a great picture of what God remembering looks like. His acts on our behalf are in light of our needs...our greatest needs. Needs that only He can satisfy.CONTEXTIn the wake of God's flood of judgment is a new, redemptive creation. God judged sin and humanity and creation had to deal with the consequences. God takes sin seriously. Sin has consequences. And Noah believed that God's word is trustworthy. So he believed and acted accordingly building an ark to save his family from God's flood of holy judgment. And that ark saved his family and a remnant of the animal kingdom. Now we see God's judgment swing to his faithful covenant with Noah and creation. He is starting over. He is giving humanity a second chance.SERMON Outline modified from BethancourtI. The Lord and the lineage of the covenant (9:18-29)Big ideas in this passage today:Hinge point in the story: Gen 8:1 "God remembered Noah..."Up to this point, the flood story has been one of judgment. From 8:1 on it's a story of redemption."God had not forgotten Noah and his family. To 'remember' in the Bible is not merely to recall to mind; it is to express concern for someone, to act with loving care for him. When God remembers his people, he does so 'with favor' (Neh 5:19; 13:31)." -NIV Study Bible, 1985"When Genesis 8:1 says, “God remembered Noah,” it doesn't mean that God had forgotten Noah and then recalled him suddenly. In the Bible, the phrase “God remembered” is often used to signify that God is about to act on His promises or fulfill His covenant. In this case, God's “remembering” Noah signifies His care and commitment to Noah and all creation, especially after the long, intense flood. This “remembrance” marks the beginning of the floodwaters receding, as God brings about a new stage in His plan for humanity and the earth. Here, God is staying true to His covenant with Noah by preserving him, his family, and the animals through the flood...it means that God is intervening in a meaningful, faithful way to fulfill His promises or enact His plans. So in Genesis 8:1, “God remembered Noah” signifies divine care and the beginning of restoration after judgment." -ChatGPT"Throughout the Bible, when God “remembers” someone, it signifies His attention, compassion, and faithfulness, often resulting in His direct intervention. Here are some key examples: 1. Abraham and Lot (Genesis 19:29): When God destroyed Sodom and Gomorrah, He “remembered Abraham” and spared Lot. God's covenant relationship with Abraham led to His merciful action in delivering Lot from the judgment on the cities. 2. Rachel (Genesis 30:22): After a long period of barrenness, “God remembered Rachel; he listened to her and enabled her to conceive.” God's remembrance here signifies His compassion and care for Rachel, ultimately fulfilling her longing for a child. 3. Israel in Egypt (Exodus 2:24): When the Israelites were suffering under slavery, “God heard their groaning, and he remembered his covenant with Abraham, with Isaac, and with Jacob.” This remembrance prompts God to act by raising up Moses and setting in motion the liberation of His people from Egypt. 4. Hannah (1 Samuel 1:19): After Hannah prayed earnestly for a son, “the Lord remembered her,” and she conceived and gave birth to Samuel. God's remembering here shows His response to Hannah's heartfelt prayer and His intervention in her life. 5. God's Promise to Israel (Psalm 105:8): The psalmist declares that God “remembers his covenant forever, the promise he made, for a thousand generations.” This indicates God's unwavering commitment to His promises and His ongoing relationship with His people. 6. The Thief on the Cross (Luke 23:42-43): Although the word “remember” is used differently here, the thief's request, “Jesus, remember me when you come into your kingdom,” appeals to Jesus' mercy and faithfulness. Jesus' reply assures him of eternal life, demonstrating the compassion inherent in divine “remembrance.”In each case, God's “remembering” is more than mere recollection—it signals His intention to act faithfully and mercifully on behalf of His people, often in response to their need or in fulfillment of His covenant promises." -ChatGPTPerhaps we should ask Jesus to remember us as well...The flood story reveals four main characteristics of God. God is... 1. Holy and Just: God judges human wickedness, showing His intolerance for sin. 2. Gracious and Merciful: He offers time for repentance and preserves Noah's family. 3. Faithful to keep his Promises: God promises to sustain creation, never to destroy it by flood again. 4. Sovereign Creator: He controls nature, demonstrating His power to both judge and restore. These qualities reveal a God who is just, merciful, faithful, and sovereign, committed to both righteousness and renewal.Said another way...The story of Noah and the flood reflects the broader story of God in the Bible by capturing key themes of Creator-God, sovereignly creating a good world where humanity sins/falls and reaps judgment. Despite this, merciful God makes a way for wicked humanity to find redemption and restoration through the covenant relationship with Creator-God through Christ Jesus, our Savior.CONCLUSIONWhat do I want them to know?God sees, remembers, and keeps his promise of mercy. The story of God in macro and how our story fits in micro. God judges sin but remember mercy. Why? Because his character is holy love. What do I want them to do?Show and tell their story in the context of God's story. Remember that God sees, remembers and keeps his promise of mercy. Why? This is how we rescue people close to us but far from God.How?By learning this macro story, seeing our story within that context, and then sharing that story with others where we live, work, learn and play.Bottom line: Noah's story is a snapshot of the Bible's grand narrative—a holy God seeking to redeem, restore, and renew fallen creation by a merciful covenant through Jesus Christ. God sees and remembers his promise of mercy. At the end of the day, my question to you is this: "Are you in the boat?" Is your life protected from God's holy wrath? Have you entered through the only door to salvation? His name is Jesus. Cf. John 14:6Jesus spoke of Noah as well:“Once, on being asked by the Pharisees when the kingdom of God would come, Jesus replied, “The coming of the kingdom of God is not something that can be observed, nor will people say, ‘Here it is,' or ‘There it is,' because the kingdom of God is in your midst.” Then he said to his disciples, “The time is coming when you will long to see one of the days of the Son of Man, but you will not see it. People will tell you, ‘There he is!' or ‘Here he is!' Do not go running off after them. For the Son of Man in his day will be like the lightning, which flashes and lights up the sky from one end to the other. But first he must suffer many things and be rejected by this generation. “Just as it was in the days of Noah, so also will it be in the days of the Son of Man. People were eating, drinking, marrying and being given in marriage up to the day Noah entered the ark. Then the flood came and destroyed them all. “It was the same in the days of Lot. People were eating and drinking, buying and selling, planting and building. But the day Lot left Sodom, fire and sulfur rained down from heaven and destroyed them all. “It will be just like this on the day the Son of Man is revealed.”Luke 17:20-30 NIVPeter puts it all in perspective in his first sermon:““Therefore let all Israel be assured of this: God has made this Jesus, whom you crucified, both Lord and Messiah.” When the people heard this, they were cut to the heart and said to Peter and the other apostles, “Brothers, what shall we do?” Peter replied, “Repent and be baptized, every one of you, in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins. And you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. The promise is for you and your children and for all who are far off—for all whom the Lord our God will call.”” Acts 2:36-39 NIVInvitationHow do we respond? Answer 2 questions:Take out a card or piece of paper right now. Write down the answer to these questions: What is God saying to me right now? What am I going to do about it? Write this down on a sheet of paper. What I hear you saying, Lord, is ___________________.[my name] is going to believe/do __________________________________________________ as a result. Finally, share this with your Home or Mission group this week when you gather as a testimony about what God is doing in your life. You don't have to get too specific to give him praise.Lord's Supper, 1 Cor 11:23-26 is good passage. Also, say something like, "Christ has died, Christ is risen, Christ will come again." (past, present, and future)PrayNOTESMy early notes:Genesis 8:1a "God remembered Noah..."God "remembering" is the cue for God about to act redemptively i.e. He's about to rescue; mercy and grace are enroute. God acts with his covenant in mind because God is faithful and God is merciful. At this point, God's story pivots from his holy, justified wrath and judgment to his extravagent mercy and redemption offered to his people by grace through faith. His rememberance leads to merciful action on God's part. From destruction or de-creation to renewal or re-creation. Applications that might follow from this:Rest in God's "remembering." God "remembering" is God acting on your behalf in a redemptive, life-changing way. It's renewal replacing wrath. (8:1)Wait patiently for God's timing. (8:6-12) Noah waited patiently for God to speak before he disembarked from the ark.Worship God today. (8:20) Noah's first act after disembarking was to worship God. Worship is our response to God's remembering. He is always worthy whether we act like it or not.Nurture a culture of life. (8:21-22) God is the creator and sustainer of life. He treasures all life. He calls us to as well. Animal life, but more importantly, human life. All life is precious--human life is sacred. So sacred, you forfeit yours when you take someone else's. We're called to lead the charge on protecting life and that includes nurturing a culture that values life above all else. Respect and Protect Life. (9:1-7) Valuing life includes protecting those who cannot protect themselves (unborn, children, disabled, elderly, dying).Live securely and confidently in the covenant relationship we enjoy in Christ. (9:8-11) A marriage rooted in God's covenant relationship with us will give us confidence and security to love when tempted to fear.Remember and rest in God's promises. (9:12-17)God will remember his covenant with us. He'll remind us that he remembers through his bow in the sky that he is faithful and keeps his promises. These rest on the fact that God remembers; he acts on behalf of his people with compassion, mercy, and faithfulness. He grows our confident assurance in his trustworthiness when we are tempted to forget.Where is Noah's ark today?"The location of Noah's ark remains one of the great mysteries, as no definitive archaeological evidence has been found to confirm its location. According to Genesis 8:4, the ark came to rest “on the mountains of Ararat,” traditionally associated with the region of Mount Ararat in modern-day Turkey. This has led many explorers and archaeologists over the centuries to search that area, but no conclusive evidence has been found. There have been several claims of sightings and discoveries on or near Mount Ararat, including photographs and wooden structures reportedly found at high altitudes. However, these claims have not been substantiated with enough verifiable evidence, and most remain controversial or unconfirmed. In the end, whether or not the ark will ever be found is uncertain. Some believe that the wood may have been repurposed by Noah's descendants after the flood or that it has simply deteriorated over time. Others suggest that, if it exists, God may allow it to remain hidden as an enduring element of faith rather than empirical evidence. For many, the ark serves more as a theological symbol of God's salvation and judgment, rather than something that needs to be found physically to affirm the biblical account." -ChatGPTIt could also be in western Armenia or even northwestern Iran as those are close to Mt. Ararat in Turkey.Summary"You're absolutely correct. Genesis 8:1 is indeed the hinge point in the flood narrative, marking the transition from judgment to salvation, from divine wrath to mercy. The phrase “God remembered Noah” encapsulates the shift from destruction to renewal and signals that God's redemptive plan is at work. Given this centrality, all application points could indeed flow from or relate to this theme of God's remembrance. Here's a revised approach:1. Rest in God's Faithfulness and Care (8:1) • Application: God's “remembering” Noah reminds us that, even when we feel forgotten or isolated, God is actively mindful of us and our needs. His faithfulness is unwavering, especially during seasons of hardship. This calls us to trust that God's timing is perfect and that He is present and working, even when we can't see it.2. Wait Patiently for God's Timing (8:6-12) • Application: Because God “remembers” us, we can wait with hope, just as Noah waited for the waters to recede. Waiting isn't passive but an active faith in God's provision and guidance. Instead of rushing ahead, we're called to trust God's process, knowing He will bring us through in His timing.3. Respond to God's Faithfulness with Worship (8:20) • Application: When Noah leaves the ark, his first act is to worship through sacrifice. This is a fitting response to God's faithfulness in remembering him and his family. When we recognize God's merciful intervention in our lives, we are called to respond with gratitude, worship, and dedication to Him.4. Trust in God's Commitment to Life (8:21-22) • Application: God's promise never to curse the ground again is a direct result of His remembering Noah and His commitment to sustaining creation. We can trust that God values and sustains life. This invites us to live in hope, knowing that God's sustaining power is over creation and our lives, even in a broken world.5. Respect and Protect Life (9:1-7) • Application: Because God “remembers” and values humanity, He commands respect for life and emphasizes human dignity. We are called to value life as sacred, reflecting God's heart for His creation. This includes protecting others, acting justly, and honoring the image of God in each person.6. Live in Covenant Relationship with God (9:8-11) • Application: The covenant with Noah flows from God's remembrance and commitment to humanity and all creatures. God's remembrance invites us to respond in covenant faithfulness, living in relationship with Him, and being stewards of His world.7. Remember God's Promises (9:12-17) • Application: The rainbow is a visible reminder of God's covenant and faithfulness to remember His promises. Just as God remembers us, we are called to remember Him and His promises. By clinging to His faithfulness, we strengthen our faith and are reminded of God's enduring mercy and love in our lives.By centering the applications around God's remembrance, we underscore the passage's message of God's mercy, faithfulness, and the invitation for us to respond in trust, gratitude, and covenantal living. This “remembrance” becomes the anchor for our faith and actions in every part of life." -ChatGPTKey Themes • New Beginnings: Noah and his family represent a fresh start for humanity, meant to live in obedience to God and care for creation. • God's Mercy: Despite humanity's failings, God commits to sustain creation and gives humans renewed responsibility. • Divine Justice and Human Dignity: God's instruction against murder underscores the sanctity of life made in His image. • The Covenant: The rainbow as a sign of the covenant is a powerful reminder of God's promise and His ongoing relationship with humanity.Genesis 8-9:17 highlights God's mercy, the sanctity of life, and the importance of the covenant. It also sets the foundation for a worldview that values life and trusts in God's promises, even amidst a broken world.Good summary:"The story of the flood in Genesis (chapters 6–9) tells us much about God's character, values, and the way He engages with humanity. Here are some of the primary ways it reveals who God is:1. God's Justice and Holiness • The flood is a response to human corruption and violence. Genesis 6:5-6 says that God saw the great wickedness on earth and was “grieved” in His heart. God's decision to judge humanity with the flood shows His intolerance of sin and injustice. His holiness requires a world that aligns with His goodness, and the flood was a response to the pervasive moral decay of Noah's time.2. God's Patience and Long-Suffering • While the decision to flood the earth is swift in the biblical account, the story implies that God waited patiently while humanity had a chance to change. Noah was “a preacher of righteousness” (2 Peter 2:5), and his 120 years building the ark can be seen as a period when God gave people a chance to repent. This patience reveals God's mercy, even in His judgment.3. God's Mercy and Covenant Faithfulness • God's decision to save Noah and his family highlights His mercy and commitment to His creation. Although humanity deserved judgment, God chose a path that preserved life. He instructed Noah to bring animals onto the ark, ensuring the survival of all living things. After the flood, God made a covenant with Noah (Genesis 9:8-17), promising never to destroy the earth with water again. The rainbow serves as a symbol of His covenant, highlighting His faithfulness to humanity despite their shortcomings.4. God's Sovereignty and Power Over Creation • The flood narrative shows God's absolute power over creation. He commands the waters to rise and fall, demonstrating His control over the natural world. The floodwaters are a reversal of the order He established at creation, where He separated waters to form dry land. By re-establishing the earth post-flood, God reaffirms His sovereignty as Creator, showing He can both judge and restore.5. God's Desire for a Righteous People • God chooses Noah, “a righteous man, blameless among the people of his time” (Genesis 6:9), and establishes a covenant with him, revealing His desire for a people who walk in righteousness. God's plan for Noah's descendants is one of blessing, hoping they would embody a restored relationship with Him and reflect His justice and goodness on earth.6. God's Grace and Renewal of Creation • After the flood, God gives Noah a mandate similar to Adam's: to “be fruitful and increase in number and fill the earth” (Genesis 9:1). This echoes the original creation mandate, suggesting that God's intention for humanity and creation remains one of growth, flourishing, and harmony. He desires to partner with humanity in caring for and filling the earth with goodness.7. God as a Covenant Maker • The covenant with Noah is foundational, setting a pattern for the covenants God will establish later with Abraham, Moses, and David, and ultimately fulfilled in Christ. The Noahic covenant emphasizes God's promise to preserve creation, foreshadowing the redemptive plan that would unfold over time.In summary, the flood story tells the story of God as a holy and just Judge, yet also as a patient, merciful, and covenant-keeping Creator. It illustrates His commitment to renewal and restoration even in the face of human failure. Through judgment and mercy, God's desire for a faithful, righteous humanity and His love for creation shine through. This story is foundational, pointing forward to God's ongoing work to redeem and renew the world."-ChatGPTThe PatternSee D. J. A. Clines, Catholic Biblical Quarterly, No. 38 (1976), pp. 487, 488. Clines explains that Gerhard Von Rad initially observed a pattern of sin, mitigation, and punishment. Then Claus Westermann discerned another element, that of divine speech. Though he did not include it in the pattern, Clines does. Thus the following chart:I. II. III. IV. Puffiness, wrinkles, uneven tone... Skin problems don't go away nearly as easily as they appear! Perhaps it's time to try what people all over the world, including top models, do to get gorgeous and glowing skin in no time: the Japanese Asahi massage. You ready to find out more about this ultimate secret to flawless skin? Then watch our new video! TIMESTAMPS: Who cannot do this massage 1:09 How to prepare for the massage 1:37 An outflow of lymphatic fluid 2:13 The area around your eyes 2:44 Your forehead 3:26 The area around your lips 3:47 Firming up the jawline 4:53 Your cheeks 5:27 Your chin 6:13 The A-zone 6:45 Music: https://www.youtube.com/audiolibrary/... SUMMARY: - You absolutely cannot do this massage if you have lymphatic system disorders, rashes, damaged skin, or the cold or flu. Yup, that means if you have serious acne, this massage isn't for you and you'd better stick to other safer techniques. - Before the session, make sure to wash your face and sanitize your hands. You can also use natural oil or cream to reduce friction with the skin. - The most effective way to do it is to repeat each movement about 3 times, or 4 to 5 times for problem areas. - With the pads of your middle and ring fingers, lightly press on the outer corners of the eyes. Maintaining this level of pressure, gently slide your fingers along your lower lids towards the inner corners of your eyes. Pause for a second, and then move your fingers upwards, drawing an arc under your eyebrows. - Now it's time for your forehead to join in on the fun. The movements here are also very simple: press the pads of your index, middle, and ring fingers to the center of your forehead and slide them out to your temples using zigzag motions. - The area around your lips will require a bit more time and effort. Start by putting both of your hands on your chin. Press 3 fingers to the center of your chin and move them in a C-shape towards your upper lip. - Put both of your hands on your chin and press 3 fingers on the center just like you did during your “around the lips” massage. Slide your hands to the inner corners of your eyes while keeping the level of pressure even. - Press the left side of your jaw with your left palm. Then, move your right hand from the right outer edge of the jaw to the point right below the inner corner of your eye. Glide your fingers from the inner corner to your temple. - Place your hands horizontally to the sides of your nose. Apply pressure using 3 fingers only and just swipe your fingers along your cheekbones in the direction of your temples. - Without further ado, bring your wrists together with your palms spread like you just did in that last massage. From this position, tilt your head slightly forward and press the pads of your hands against your chin. - Put your thumbs under your chin with the rest of your fingers meeting at the sides of your nose. You're kind of forming a triangle around your mouth and nose. Leave your thumbs where they are but move the rest of your fingers from your nose to your temples, slightly pulling the skin outwards. CODY GINGERIC All right, good morning, PT on ICE Daily Show. My name is Cody Gingerich. I'm one of the lead faculty with the extremity management division, and I'm coming on here today to talk about building out the perfect HEP. Okay, so there's several factors revolving around building out what is considered the perfect HEP. Now, perfect means best ability for our patients to complete the HEP that we want them to, okay? And so what I'm going to go through is all the different factors that you need to consider, including what you are deciding you're doing, but also the patient's expectations and what they have the ability to accomplish when you are trying to say, all right, these are the HEPs. These are the exercises that I want you to do at home. What factors do you need to consider to build out the HEP that is going to give you the most compliance? Cause ultimately you can build out the perfect HEP as far as these are the exact exercises that I want them doing. These are going to be what I consider the perfect exercises for what I found. But if the patient doesn't do them, that HEP is no longer perfect because they can't get it done and they're not going to progress the way that you want them to. Okay. HOW MUCH TIME DOES YOUR PATIENT HAVE? So starting off the, the number one thing that you have to figure out is what time does your patient have? Okay. I know a lot of times when you know, you're going through your, if it's an initial examination, you're trying to figure out the first HEP, you're, you could have multiple different exercises available to you. Um, so let's say, you know, it's a shoulder issue and you're wanting to give them three, four, maybe five exercises that immediately you're like, Oh, okay. This would be good. That would be good. This also would be good. But if it takes 20 minutes for your patient to do and they have five, they're not going to say, oh, well, I'll just do a couple of them and get, they'll do none. Okay. So the first thing that you have to figure out with the patient is what time available do you have to, do you think to get these things done? Some people will say, whatever you tell me I'm going to do. And those people are great, right? You know, they're going to do it. Whatever you think is best. That's great. There are other people that said, you know, they've got kids, they've got to take care of family members. They've got jobs that are stressful. They've got all kinds of things. Maybe they're traveling a ton. And so they're like, you know, honestly, I may have five minutes at the end of the day to be able to get something done. Or they say, I can get to the gym five to 10 minutes early to get things done. Or, you know, I can get to the gym, I'm like running in like two minutes late every time, I'm barely, you know, either for class or it's like right at the end of the day. And they're like, well, yeah, but I could end class and stay 10 minutes extra. Um, and so that's where you then have to start figuring out, all right, well, if I choose two things in each and I give them a rep scheme that can get accomplished what I want and still get them in and out and under 10 minutes. Now, all of a sudden we have something that they feel confident that they can get done. Okay, what I would consider then 1A and 1B is like time is 1A, but 1B or maybe flip-flop those two things would be, you know, what are you trying to accomplish as far as your exercises in general? DOSING So in extremity management, we talk about dosing a lot, and that's one of the primary factors as far as when you're treating people out is dosage, and it matters. And there's a strength dose, and there's a rehab dose, and there's a power dose. And you need to make sure the HEP is equally as dialed into that as what you're doing with them in clinic. So up front, you need to think, am I trying to get this tissue legitimately stronger? in which case you are building them out their HEP for probably closer to that five by five right at about 80 percent of their one rep max or around that like three sets of six to eight somewhere like that where it is heavy load being lifted on whatever tissue you're trying to accomplish And in that moment, they may not need to do that multiple times a day, maybe not even every day. So if your brain is saying, well, this tissue needs to get stronger and I'm going to dose this out as a strength dose, then you could say, hey, you know, I might ask you to do this. It might take you more like 15 to 20 minutes, but can we do this three times a week? We want to really hit this hard. We want to make sure your tissues are going to significant fatigue. but then we're going to give you at least a full day of recovery in between. Those tissues also need to be able to recovery, repair, and then come back stronger. So then you have a day in between. Now I'm only asking you to do this three days a week. Could you do that for me? If you're thinking more of that rehab dose, you're wanting more blood perfusion to those tissues. Maybe now you give your one exercise that you think is going to be best, but they're highly irritable, and you need to get just as much blood pumping to that system as possible. Maybe you give them something that takes one minute, but you ask them to do that four, five, six times throughout the day. Because we need a lot of touch points on that tissue often throughout the day, as opposed to saying, I need you to do a lot X amount of time for this specific thing. But if you're saying I need blood pumping, they're sitting at a desk for eight hours a day, but they then have. 20 or 15 minutes where they do something to their shoulder, it's probably not going to bump them forward as fast as possible. But if you say, Hey, 30 seconds to a minute of this, I just, anytime you think about it, like set an hour timer, can you do one minute every hour or every two hours? A lot of times that becomes, um, more manageable for people to do. And then even if they, you know, you're like, Hey, could you do the six to eight times in a day? They say, yes, maybe though that gets accomplished three to four times and you're still doing okay. Okay. Those are kind of your one A, one B. What time do they have and really what are you trying to accomplish with their tasks that you're giving them? EQUIPMENT AVAILABILITY Okay. The third thing is what equipment do they have available to them and how willing are they to potentially go and get equipment? So that means before you start doing anything, you need to ask, do they have bands? Do they have weights? What kind of things do they have at their house? What access do they have to anything at a gym? Different gyms have different equipment, right? Do they have kettlebells? Do they have dumbbells? Do they have small looped bands? Do they have big pull-up type of bands? You can manufacture exercises from almost anything and your goal There is no one perfect exercise. There is the exercise that's going to get the person doing what you want them to, to the tissue that you think is most involved, and then you build that exercise for that person, right? So, let's say they have absolutely nothing at their house, but they go to the gym five or six days a week. That first visit is not the time where you say, you know what, I need you to go by XYZ. Nope. You say, great, your HEP is only going to be done at the gym. I need you to do this every time you step in the gym for five minutes, whether that's before or whether that's after you can make that choice, but you need to build out the HEP so that they can get that accomplished as simply and easily as possible when they go to the gym. That's the only way that they're going to get it done. Alternative, if they have nothing at their house, at our clinic a really good option is have either bands for sale or an Amazon link or something. The best one is bands for sale right there and then. Or if you can find them in bulk somewhere and can just hand those out, if they're like a dollar a piece, maybe eat that cost and give them out. But that's a really good way to say, okay, well I need you to do, you know, some band pull aparts or some 90 90 raises or something. And you have one of those like booty bands that you can hand them. And now all of a sudden they have something to accomplish at home. So that's where you need to get a little bit creative up front and maybe at home they've got like a two pound dumbbell or a five pound dumbbell or they've got one band, right? That is again where you start navigating that whole question of what exercise can I build based on the equipment that they have available to them. Potentially then after you have built a little bit of rapport or if that person in front of you is like, Hey, I'm going to do anything you want. You just tell me what to go and I'll go get it. That's when you can start shooting off Amazon links. Be like, Hey, go to play it again. I need you to get a 10 pound dumbbell. I need you to get a kettlebell. I need you to get this band. There are those people, but those questions have to be asked before you say, here's what I want you to do for your HEP. SUMMARY You first have to ask how much time do you think you have in a day? Your own brain has to be saying, what's my goal for these HEP exercises? Is it strength dose? Is it more rehab dose and blood perfusion? Then you say, okay, well, what do you have at your house? Do you have anything, any type of equipment that can be built on weights or whatever? Or is everything that you do at the gym cool? What is your gym routine look like? Do you get there super early in the morning? Do you get there in the evening? Do you have more time before? Do you have more time afterwards? Right? All of those questions have to be asked. Ideally, before you start thinking, I need them to do this exercise, this exercise, and this exercise. Now on that first visit, you might pitch optimal a little bit more heavily and say, Hey, this is really what I would like to do. And like for you to do, even based on those equations, Then they come in and say, Hey, you know, I don't think I was, I wasn't really able to get those things accomplished as much as you told me. After the first visit, if they're not able to do that, that first time is on you because then you have to say, okay, well what can I do to make your life easier? I have other options that we can do. There are more things, more different ways that we can make this HEP more accessible to you. If you don't answer that or ask that question, then the reason they're not doing their HEP still falls in your hands, not on theirs. If they say, you know, this is really easy. I should be able to get this done. And they take responsibility for it. Great. But until that happens, I would still say that you need to figure out how can you still make it easier? pitch optimal, then we negotiate acceptable. And you can still have that conversation and say, look, this isn't exactly how I would like it to be, but I think we can get the job done if this is really all you can commit to. Okay. So in that sense, now they know that like, Hey, this probably my, you know, my shoulder pain isn't going to go away quite as quickly as Cody probably hoped because I'm not able to do exactly what he was thinking. But if I still do something, it's still going to bump forward. And as long as they're okay with that, you have to set those clear expectations. But overall, that's how we are building out a really nice HEP that people are going to also be compliant with. Bring them into that. Use your creative mind as far as exercises are concerned, because really it's not the exercise that matters, it's the dosage. You need to know what tissue that you're hitting, and you need to know what dosage that you are trying to use to try to make those tissues happier. If they need to be stronger, we could potentially pull back the actual number of times per week that they do it. Give them an opportunity to recover. If it's more blood perfusion and a rehab dose, maybe make that incredibly short where they can do that one time for 30 seconds to a minute. You give them one exercise and say, hey, you're hammering this over the next week. You're pumping as much blood to that. When you come back in next week, then we're gonna adjust and do something different. But overall, you then need to know what equipment do they have, what do they have access to, what are they willing to go and get? Can you provide them with something that will help them get that accomplished? Whether that is selling something in store or in house, whether that's handing them something that costs a dollar to $2, something like that, that again, lets them be more compliant with what you're hoping for. Okay, so those are three things building out a perfect HEP. The perfect HEP, shocker, is not the exercise that is the best one. It is the exercise that they're gonna get done, that you have dosed out perfectly, that is going to be compliant, and you know what dosage and tissue that you're hitting. Okay. That's all I got for today's PT on ice. If you want to catch extremity on the road, we've got two courses happening this coming week, one down in Texas, one up in, um, Wisconsin. And then in a couple of weeks from that, we've got one happening out in Utah. So hit one of those up sometime in the next couple of weeks, we're all over the country and I will see you next time. Summary: You're out of this world, listener! Join Holly and Devin today as they discuss books set in or featuring outer space. Devin has always been obsessed with space exploration and studied it in college, whereas Holly only really wants to read about this subject in her books. Whether you have a passion for astronomy or astrology, whether you dream of flying to the moon or are glad your feet are firmly planted on earth, these books have something for you! Topics Discussed: The Heart (3:41): Devin discussed A Cosmic Kind of Love by Samantha Young, a unique romance following event planner Hallie Goodman and NASA astronaut Christopher Ortiz as they orbit each other and then collide. After discovering his video diaries from the ISS (International Space Station), Hallie develops a crush on the charismatic astronaut and starts to send her own recordings to his discontinued NASA email address. Little does she know, though, that Chris is watching them and developing a crush of his own. Devin's key takeaways were: Not only is the book full of videos where Chris describes what it's like to live on the ISS, but there's metaphorical space for better and worse laced throughout this novel. Chris works for NASA and did 5 months in space, but both he and Hallie struggle with space, taking up more of it in their lives and not letting it get in the way of their fledgling romance. Both protagonists have a lot of trauma and a lot of current struggles with their families, especially their parents. This informs how they show up in their relationship and how they react to various triggers. A lot of the book involves the repair or boundary setting of Hallie and Chris with their families. Chris, having dated a socialite named Darcy and Hallie who is consistently wrapped up in the world through her work have to fight for their positions in society and for authenticity in their relationships. Even Hallie's dad struggles with posturing and connection when he buys a gigantic house to make his ex jealous. The Dagger (23:48): Holly discussed Station Eternity by Mur Lafferty, book one in the Midsolar Murders series and a novel following Mallory Viridian, a human living on the space station Eternity amongst various species of aliens. Having left earth after realizing that people connected to her are murdered at an alarming rate, Mallory's existence on Eternity is peaceful… until a shuttle full of humans comes to the station and the bodies begin to pile up again. Holly's key takeaways were: One of the best aspects of the book was the various aliens on board, ranging from the Gneiss who are creatures made of living rock to the Sundry, an insect species similar to wasps who have a hive mind and can only communicate with you if three or more of them gather together. The murder mystery component of the story felt misleading - there wasn't so much the real focus of this story and didn't come together in a way that felt satisfying; there was some confusion on the core thrust of the plot and what the reader should be focused on. Ultimately, this book had a lot of promise and intriguing world building of alien species cohabitating in a sentient space station, but the execution felt chaotic and messy. If you're looking for a sci-fi thriller with a unique twist, though, check out this series. Hot On the Shelf (47:34): Holly: Shark Heart: A Love Story by Emily Habeck Devin: How You Get the Girl by Anita Kelly What's Making Our Hearts Race (50:52): Holly: Dune Part 2 Devin: Bread baking weekly Instagram: @heartsanddaggerspod Website: www.heartsanddaggerspod.com If you like what you hear, please tell your friends and rate and review us on Apple Podcasts and Spotify so that we can find our perfect audience.
In our everyday life, we're usually doing things in seemingly the easiest and most rational way, yet we face the same problems repeatedly. Can't fall asleep again after going to the bathroom at night? Wanna know why? That's because you switched on the lights to see what you're doing. Our brain is trained to think that the light naturally means morning. Yeah, our brain is a tricky thing. Do you know, for example, why you should have a good laugh before a test? The thing is that our brains need to build strong relations with what we want to remember. And nothing helps more than something that gives them positive emotions! So if you wanna remember something important, just find something to laugh about, and you'll remember it for good. This doesn't allow as much light in, tricking your brain into thinking it's not that bright yet, and you can keep sleeping! - Loud noises also don't help anyone get a good night's sleep, so the best you can do to save yourself is to move your eyes rapidly in the dark. - Our metabolism keeps working when we sleep. On average, you burn around 500 calories overnight if you get 8 hours of sleep, which is the recommended time anyways. - Your brain will naturally connect the smile with happiness and good thoughts, and you'll keep this attitude for the rest of the day. - You can deal with everything else if you devote just one day on taking care of your looks. Combine it with some reasonable shopping, which is a good means of stress release. - No coffee, no breakfast, don't even rush to the bathroom. Everything else must wait. Instead, as soon as you get up, sit at your desk and write on a blank sheet of paper. - If you're wrong, then the information will still have much more meaning for you, and therefore will be easier to remember. - No matter how good a person is at holding a grudge, it's just in the nature of our mind that we tend to recall good things much faster, and in better detail. - The next time you think to yourself that it's best to behave and be humble when you're surrounded by people, try not to miss a moment when you can really shine bright. - It'll produce much more heat if you eat an ice-cream during a cold winter day, which will, in turn, warm you up. But don't overuse this trick. - Some people say that nothing hurts worse than a paper cut. But anyway, there's a medicine for those paper cuts. And it's Chapstick! Just put it over the cut and feel the pain disappear. SUMMARY:You wanted the best, you got the best! Rock & Roll Hall of Famer Paul Stanley of KISS joins Songcraft to talk about his long and diverse career through the lens of his role as a songwriter.PART ONE:Paul and Scott talk about musicians who adopt personas, how KISS seems to have the best timing of any musical group of all time, and their respective frightening memories of the band. Then they spend the rest of the time pinching themselves that Paul freakin' Stanley is on Songcraft. PART TWO:Our in-depth conversation with Rock & Roll Hall of Famer Paul StanleyABOUT PAUL STANLEY:Paul Stanley is best known for his vocals, guitar, and outlandish stage performances that have helped define KISS. Combining elements of shock rock and glam to set a new standard for theatrical arena rock, Stanley's Starchild persona, alongside fellow band co-founder Gene Simmons's Demon character, has become one of the most iconic figures in music history. One of the best-selling bands of all time, KISS has sold over 75 million albums worldwide, and has earned more Gold-certified albums than any other band in the US. Fourteen of their albums have been certified Platinum, three of which have earned multi-Platinum status. Stanley has written or co-written many of the band's best-known songs, including “Strutter,” “Rock and Roll All Nite,” “Shout it Out Loud,” “Detroit Rock City,” “God of Thunder,” “Hard Luck Woman,” “Love Gun,” “I Was Made for Lovin' You,” “Lick it Up,” “Heaven's on Fire,” “Crazy, Crazy Nights,” “Forever,” and many others. In addition to his work with the band, Stanley released a self-titled debut album in 1978, and another solo album in 2006 called Live to Win. More recently, he released the album Now and Then, a collection of R&B classics alongside vintage-style originals under the name Paul Stanley's Soul Station. Defying categorization, he has written a hit song with Michael Bolton, duetted with Sarah Brightman, and even starred in a production of Phantom of the Opera. Paul's songs have been covered by a diverse list of artists, including Cher, Nirvana, The Replacements, Green Day, Ronnie Spector, Bonnie Tyler, Toad the Wet Sprocket, and Garth Brooks. As a member of KISS, Paul was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 2014. This fall, the band wraps the final leg of their End of the Road tour, culminating in a pair of shows at Madison Square Garden in New York, the city where KISS first formed in 1972.
Summary: “You'll hear a voice behind you, this is the way walk in it.” I would call that the Abraham walk. Just as Abraham the father of our faith went out not knowing where he was going, being obedient because God made it real to is heart. We too must leave everything we have ever known to enter into this new realm of walking with God in the now. Show Notes: As Abraham our Father in the faith, we too must leave all that we have known to enter into what God has for us today. All God's promises are unfolding before us today. In this new day we must walk in revelation to see what He is doing and saying. A new Age of Spirit has opened up and people are being drawn into it to know Him now. It's already happening. Quotes: It is a now experience, moment by moment that God is bringing us into. And He's revealing to us moment by moment, the things that He will do, in us, if we just trust Him, and keep standing and believing and walking with Him. Everything that God's ever done, will do, is already in motion in the realm of spirit. It's just a matter of us coming into it, walking into it, as we live there. All those promises are before us. Every Word that God has ever spoken, it's taking a revelation by the Spirit to see it and understand it. If it's not a revelation to us, then we're not seeing it right, plain and simple. It has to be that expectation of futuristic things, disappears. And we are walking in the now with the Lord on a moment by moment basis. Do we really know what God is going to speak to our hearts on a moment by moment basis, unless we are walking with Him in the now? Enter into that relationship with the Father, where when He speaks to you, hear His voice, and you just simply say. “OK Lord, that's what I will do.” ...this age is opening before us, is not just for a few weeks, months, or years, but an age that's opened of Spirit, and people are going to come and walk with God. Like the scripture says and join himself to the Lord in an everlasting covenant that will not be broken. ...

Summary: “You eat like a bird!” We're sure you've heard this before and may have even said it, but if you knew what we know, you'd probably never say it again! Join Cheryl and Kiersten as they talk about some of the strange things birds eat! For our hearing impaired listeners, a transcript of this podcast follows the show notes on Podbean. Show Notes: “Cassowaries: Crucial to Rainforest Ecology,” The University of Waikato, https:blog.waikato.ac.nz/bioblog/2009/12/cassowaries-crucial-to-rainfor/ www.allaboutbirds.org American Bird Conservancy, https://abcbirds.org Our email address, please reach out with comments, questions, or suggestions: thefeathereddesert@gmail.com Cheryl: Intro Have you ever heard the expression “You eat like a bird.” What did that really mean? I personally never got it, but I heard many times. If the person who coined that phrase really knew what birds ate, I don't think that it would have been said at the dinner table. Today let's look at the weird things' birds eat and a little about how they do it. So, there's the Phainopepla that consumes mistletoe berries, and a lot of them; this bird can do this because they have a specialized digestive tract to accommodate this particular berry. Then there is the American Robin, that changes it digestive system to be able to adjust to the transition from protein-rich invertebrates in spring and summer to fruits and berries in winter. Kiersten: Worm-Eating Warbler This warbler is small, rather drab in color with a black and buffy head stripes on its flat head. This flat head helps it to get into all the nooks and crannies of the forest floor where it consumes caterpillars and slugs, insect larvae but not earth worms like the name suggest. This warbler has a beautiful song that helps it live up to the warbler part of its name even if its drab in color. Cheryl: Shore birds and Sapsuckers Birds like the Black-necked Stilt, and the American Avocet are shore birds that eat mollusks such as clams, oysters, snails, and slugs found in the muddy water along the edges of creeks, rivers, lakes, ponds and irrigated fields and agricultural fields. Then there are birds that feed on the mucus of plants and trees, namely sap. These birds are woodpeckers, waxwings, kinglets, and warblers which all have a component of sap/mucus in their diet. Kiersten: Red-tail Hawk and Great Horned Owl Rattlesnakes and Red-tail hawks, two very capable predators, but if an adult red-tail hawk locates a rattlesnake out in the open, it's a dead snake crawling. Rattlesnakes are a favorite meal for this hawk. Red-tail hawk doesn't sneak up on a rattlesnake, if it did that it would actually give the rattler the advantage. Instead, the hawk flies down and perches right in front of the snake. There by taking the lead in what is often called the “dance of death.” The hawk will fan out its feathers, exhibiting its 5 ft wing span. In response, the rattlesnake will rattle it's tail in a warning, and will puff up to look bigger and more formidable. This might work. If not, the hawk will then hop or walk around, essentially trying to divert the snake's attention. This will likely trigger the rattlesnake to snap open its mouth and display it 5-7” long fangs, and with the coiling motion, it will lunge forward. Then the hawk hops onto the snake and end the snake's life. Red-tail hawks don't eat the head of the snake therefore avoiding ingesting any venom. Great Horned Owls have excellent night vision and a poor sense of smell, which helps it deal with one of its favorite meals- skunk. So, when you are out in the wilds of Great Horned Owl habitat and you smell skunk, but don't see one you could be in the area of a Great Horned Owl nest. Cheryl: Scott's Oriole and Western Tanager and the Cassowary Scott's Oriole is a fruit eater, not only do these birds eat dagger cactus fruit, but also cultivated fruits such as apricots, peaches and figs. The Western Tanager lives off of insects such as bees and wasps in the spring and summer. Then in the winter months it will enjoy berries…all kinds like hawthorn, wild cherries, elderberries, blackberries, mulberries and service berries. All the above-mentioned birds may be found in our state of Arizona, but there is one fruit eater that lives in Australia and Papua New Guinea, the Cassowary. This bird is the third largest bird in the world with an adult standing up to six feet tall. These birds live in the rainforests and are considered keystone species because of their role as a major seed dispenser of up to 238 rainforest plant species. Over a 100 of these plants' species depend entirely on Cassowaries to dispense their seeds. In some cases, cassowaries are the only bird to be able to digest the fruit of certain plants such as the Cassowary Plum. This fruit contains a sap that is poisonous to humans and most other animals. The Cassowary's unique digestive system which is short and fast, to digest the fruit. The Cassowary plum is an important food source for the Cassowary, and in turn the bird than distributes and helps germinate the seeds of the plant. Summary: You may have heard there are four pillars to the Passion for Dance podcast: mindset, resilience, motivation, and community. All of the episodes revolve around those themes, and I chose that structure because it comes directly from my Positive Coaching Framework. To be a coach with impact, you have to teach your dancers how to have a tough mindset, fierce motivation, and steady resilience, and I believe the best way to accomplish that is with a community next to you. My goal as an educator is always to have a positive impact on the dancers and other teachers that I work with, and it's time I share that with all of you. This episode is part one of a three-part series where I will show you how to be a dance coach who truly makes a lasting positive impact on your athletes by focusing on those three areas of mindset, motivation, and resilience. In today's episode, we'll start off with the mindset pillar. We break down the three tools of mindset: building confidence, establishing positive self-talk, and Controlling the Controllables. I'll also share a message from a member of the Relevé Membership and dive deeper into the tools available to you inside of the membership. The journey after cancer, or any disease, is one to be reckoned with, and it is not simple and takes time, patience, and strong support from your loved ones. Tune in as Juni Bucher discusses how she managed life during her cancer journey and how she uses therapy to aid individuals, both survivors and those presently facing this disease. Summary: You feel alone when you know you have cancer and are going through one of the most difficult times of your life. Discover how we can be there for folks who have survived or are battling breast cancer on their journey. Join Nutritional Therapy Practioner and breast cancer survivor Juni Bucher, NTP, as she explores the issues that concern breast cancer patients as they navigate their physical and mental healing. After beating breast cancer in 2019, Juni decided to follow her passion for nutrition and wellness and went back to school for Nutritional Therapy. She also completed a 200-hour meditation teacher certification through Unplug Meditation studio led by davidji and Suze Yalof-Schwartz. Juni currently has a private practice focusing on hormonal balance for women in mid-life and breast cancer survivors. Quotes: “There's a lot of anxiety that comes with being a survivor.” “Worry is preposterous because it creates a current reality that contains nothing that exists.” “We're in a position where we feel guilty for caring about whether or not we survive over someone else or that we're robbing them of an opportunity.” “There is still life in Death, and you must enjoy every moment.” “Most of the time, it's just being present.” Just checking in and not being afraid to talk about something other than cancer.” Takeaway: Surviving cancer is not the end of a person's journey since they must deal with persistent fear. It is critical to check in with them regularly. Worrying is unavoidable, but we should avoid falling into a cycle of persistent concern because it will only worsen things. Enjoy life and cherish the people around you, in illness and health, because life is only a loan. Knowing what to do to support someone close to you who is facing cancer would be beneficial. Understanding what is happening behind the scenes while your clients or prospects move through the buying process would be beneficial. Summary: You may or may not yet know that I do a lot of coaching the coaches in my business. This is where I work with dance teachers and coaches to help them discover how they can best support their dancers' mental skills while improving their own skills. After doing this work for years, I've found that many people are struggling with similar situations, and I believe in the value of hearing how other people are dealing with these particular things. Today, I am excited to share something new with all of you! We'll be doing a one-on-one coaching for dance educators episode with Coach Erin, a high school coach in Missouri. In this episode we discuss personal mindset tips for dance coaches, how to build up intensity and excitement earlier in the season, the benefit of discussing possible obstacles and reflecting on performances with dancers, and more. These episodes will function as a way to come together in the community to support other dance educators, and this is the first of many episodes like these to come. These types of episodes will allow us to see that we're not alone and also help us gain insight into how things can improve when it comes to both our dancers' mental skills and our own skills as coaches. Pull Quotes - Chelsea: “I also don't think it's necessarily bad to be honest with our dancers about this identity piece. Just being open with that and honest with them: “Do you ever feel that way? Do you feel like when you get a correction that it means you're a bad dancer?” I think if they know this is still hard for a lot of us and it's not just that there's something wrong with you, it's that this is a skill we have to work on and being able to separate our identity from this one piece of negative feedback.” Erin: “That's a huge part of why I love dance, and that's why I love teaching because it's not just about dance. It's not just about kicks and leaps and turns. It's about what dance has taught me as a human and sharing that with my team, my studio girls, and all of that.” Key Highlights - [2m 2s] Personal Mindset as a Coach [8m 18s] The Benefit of Asking Your Dancers: “What Did You Hear Me Say?” [9m 50s] Honesty and Transparency About Who We Are as Coaches and the Decisions We Make [14m 37s] How to Find Success and Reach Goals Without Competition Pressure [20m 16s] Simulating the Magic of Parking Lot Practice in the Studio [25m 52s] Helping Our Dancers See the Potential Obstacles [26m 58s] An Element of Reflection [29m 54s] Our Legacy as Coaches Resources - To be a part of a future episode, visit: www.chelseapierotti.com/beontheshow _______ Did you enjoy today's episode? Summary: You may have escaped the recent hurricane on the East coast of the US, but everyone is going to get hit by the economic storm taking place. Here to talk about this is Michael Pento, who predicted the record high inflation that has been rampant throughout 2022. He explains some of the culprits of the most pressing economic problems today—to which demand destruction and rising nominal interest rates have affected various markets. Tune in to hear more about what's in store and to get Michael's firsthand perspective. Highlights: -The economic storm taking place is a category 5 and no one seems to be aware of it -Back in 2021, Michael predicted record high inflation for 2022 and the Fed slamming on the brakes in an extremely weak economy -The Federal reserve has only raised interest rates by 400-500 points a year twice -Something in the credit markets is going to have to break for the Fed to come to the rescue -We have added $3 trillion to household debt to GDP; it is significantly higher than it was in the past -We're already above the rate Powell was threatening to take us to -It's not just the dollar that's hurting us; it's demand destruction -All bank loans have gone up exponentially, and all debt is hurting the consumer -With deflation, the real price of gold could go up while the nominal price goes down -Rising nominal interest rates lead to rising real interest rates -When real interest rates are rising, you don't want to go near gold -Michael doesn't think energy prices will go down in the short term, but that demand destruction will become so acute in 2023 that prices could go down -2023 has a huge recession in store -You stay in power by giving people things for free, but this creates problems Useful Links: Financial Survival Network Pento Portfolio Strategies
Summary: You've made money in crypto and managed to sell it for a profit; however, there is still an important question to answer. What are the strategies for minimizing tax burden with crypto, and can you use the losses to offset other gains? Micah Fraim, a bestselling author and CPA of an accounting firm, comes on the show to explain how you can lower your crypto taxes by the legal means available. Many people don't understand this component when investing in digital assets, and Micah's mission is to help people successfully manage these new age investments. Tune in for more insight. Highlights: -If you've made money in crypto and you managed to sell it for a profit, you have to figure out strategies for minimizing tax burden with crypto, or try and use the losses to offset other gains -The average crypto investor has three main categories of income (i.e. trading, capital gains, staking income) -If you're trading and holding for more than a year, you get the same treatment as long term capital gains -With crypto, you can sell your whole portfolio and buy it back, but you realize the loss -After 30 days you can buy a stock back but with crypto you don't have to worry about waiting -The IRS has only issued guidance on five or six things in crypto -With the things that are ubiquitous, there is no guidance -Your duty as a citizen is to minimize your taxable incomes through whatever legal means are available -It's going to take multiple iterations of regulations to close the loopholes/gray areas that exist right now -Micah bought some crypto back in 2017. When the market recovered, Micah got involved in a project with cryptocurrency, and realized that no one understood the tax side of digital assets Useful Links: Financial Survival Network Fraim, Cawley & Company, CPAs
