Bassist Horace Panter has been a valuable and reliable sideman for his entire career. He starts out as a founding member of the Specials, contributing mightily to the magic sound of that revolutionary band. After their demise, he joined forces with Dave and Roger to form General Public and rode that wave for a few years. Since then, he's been around for nearly every version of the Specials including the Neville Staple fronted version in the 90s and the Terry Hall reunion version of the 2000s. These days he's mostly retired and doing what he wants. We hear stories of the ups and downs, his last interactions with Terry Hall, his art career, and much more. The benign-sounding "Moms for Liberty" has largely flown under the radar, in large part because political reporters tend to portray it as a grassroots movement of conservative parents fighting for "parental choice." The reality, explains Vice's David Gilbert, is that Moms for Liberty is a dark money-funded organization with close ties to the GOP that has terrorized educators, school board members and other perceived enemies with vicious campaigns of harassment and intimidation.  Then we welcome WaPo's Greg Sargent back to the podcast to talk about the GOP hurtling toward a debt limit breach and the Supreme Court's ethics crisis.PlaylistCannonballers: "Colony House"Meghan Trainor: "Made You Look"King Schascha: "Rudeboy Skankin (feat. Michael was a great friend of Stiv Bators and the perfect fit to take his place for this one-off performance.“The Shepherds Bush Empire was an old variety gig which is what I think the Vive Le Rock show on April 6th is gonna be” states Brain James. “A bunch of different acts doing sensational sets, its got all the makings of being a fun, memorable night and a good excuse to play some old Lords songs dedicated to the one and only Stiv Bators.”NEVILLE STAPLE, from The Specials will lift the roof off with a live set of rudeboy classics with his extraordinary band, and East End street punk/West Ham United legends the COCKNEY REJECTS will rock their classics in a fast & furious awards set.The all-star house band, THE VIVE LE ROCKERS featuring Paul-Ronney Angel and members of Ruts DC, Jim Jones All Stars and Urban Voodoo Machine will back artists including MILLIE MANDERS, BAD BARBEE – Elizabeth Westwood (WESTWORLD) and Jennie Belle Star (THE BELLE STARS), JIM JONES and GIRLSCHOOLs Kim and Jackie. Hopefully the night will descend into beautiful chaos, gongs will be given, songs will be sung and planks will be spanked and a great time will be had by all!”VIP packages are available that include a limited awards T-Shirt, VIP access, after show party ticket and Vive Le Rock annual. In Defense of Ska

In the summer of 2000, ska was on the decline in the US, but up in Victoria, Canada, it was as popular as ever. Local promoter Dane Roberts--who'd been throwing ska shows for a few years--decided to throw a full-on ska festival. It was in part a tribute to Mathew Bishop, the man that introduced him to ska (he'd died from a mountain climbing accident two years earlier), and it was Dane's final college assignment. If the festival made money, he passed. If it didn't, he failed. The first year of the Victoria Ska & Reggae Festival was a big success. Dane booked Chris Murray, The Scofflaws, King Django, and a reunion show for local favorites, Pressure Cooker. But the following year, ska died in Victoria, and attendance dropped. But Dane kept the festival going anyway, even paying out of pocket to do so. He kept the Victoria Ska & Reggae Festival going no matter how popular (or unpopular) ska was. And he even expanded the festival to include acts rooted in ska and reggae. It's the longest-running ska festival in North America. Guests over the years have included Fishbone, Less Than Jake, The Wailers, Ozomatli, The Real McKenzies, The Sierra Leone Refugee All Stars, Mos Def, Neville Staple, Cherry Poppin' Daddies, Voodoo Glow Skulls, The Itals, Ky-Mani Marley, Toots and the Maytals, Dr. Ring Ding, and Larry and His Flask. The festival celebrates its 23rd year on June 22-26, 2022. We sit down with Dane to learn more about the festival's history, why he's so in love with ska, and get a glimpse of Victoria's local ska scene with groups like The Bombasts, Pressure Cooker, One Drop and Grossbuster. Tickets can be purchased at https://victoriaskafest.ca Support the show

I'm excited to share part two of my two-part interview with Lynval Golding of The Specials. In part one, Lynval shared his take on the final days of The Specials and the events that led him, Terry Hall and Neville Staple to leave the band and start the Fun Boy ThreeIn part two, Lynval shares interesting facts, stories and anecdotes about the Fun Boy Three, how they came to be and breaks down the stories behind songs on their first self titled LP released in 1981 and their David Byrne follow-up “Waiting” released in 1983. I've always been a huge fan of the Fun Boy Three.  I think its because they released these two albums just as I was coming of age and the adult themes expressed in the songs gave me a peek into the chaotic and crazy world of adulthood that was waiting just around the corner for me.   Where The Specials were social commentary packaged in a mix of ska, punk, reggae and muzak (particularly on their second album), the Fun Boy Three were much more subtle relying initially on minimal instrumentation, synths and percussion on their first album before moving on to the of orchestrated pop music of "Waiting" that touched on themes of divorce, infidelity, the sectarian violence in Northern Ireland and child abuse. When I think of the time I was getting ready to leave home and venture out into the world on my own for the first time, I always think of the FB3 and Waiting. I was very excited to talk to Lynval about all this and he was forthright in sharing his thoughts.  So sit back, relax and enjoy my conversation with Lynval Golding.

I'm excited to share part one of a two-part interview I conducted with Lynval Golding for the Ska Boom podcast.  Lynval is best known as the rhythm guitarist and vocalist with the The Specials.  He later went on to co-found the Fun Boy Three with his bandmates Terry Hall and Neville Staple and later joined the Special Beat a super group featuring members of The Specials and The English Beat who toured the world in the early 90s and helped popularize ska here in the US.  He has been the driving force behind the reunited version of The Specials and that patience and hard work resulted in a UK #1 for their album Encore released last year. Though I wasn't able to connect with Lynval while I was writing my book, in this first part of the interview, he patiently answered my many questions about The Specials and their experiences touring America and addresses the friction in the band that arose while they were touring the U.S. in 1981and that ultimately led to their split and the formation of the Fun Boy Three after Ghost Town reached number 1 in the UK charts If you are a fan of The Specials, Fun Boy Three of 2 Tone, you won't want to miss this one. So sit back and enjoy Lynval Golding!

In the world of ska and the history of British alternative rock of the 70s and 80s, Neville Staple is practically royalty. Coming up with the pioneering Two-Tone group The Specials, Neville and his bandmates not only cut an indelible image stylistically, but politically as well by displaying blacks and whites cohabitating in the same band during a time of political unrest in the UK. After releasing one of the greatest debut albums in history, as well as a more expansive, but worthy follow up, Neville, Terry Hall and Lynval Goulding created the Fun Boy Three which expanded their musical palette even wider. After two albums they too called it quits. Today, Neville reunites with the Specials on occasion, but his primary focus is the Neville Staple Band, who released an excellent album last year called The Return of Judge Roughneck. Neville is a legend and changed a lot of people's lives, including mine!      http://www.originalrudeboy.co.uk/
