048 I Shaping the Future: Insights on Assistant Superintendent Career Growth with Pat Jones

Leadership on the Links

Play Episode Listen Later Mar 25, 2025 43:44

In this episode of Leadership on the Links, we dive into the findings of a recent survey on assistant superintendent employment trends and career development with industry expert Pat Jones. The conversation sheds light on what today's assistants need to succeed and how the industry can better support their growth. What you'll learn in this episode: ✅ Mentorship & Development Matter: Assistants are seeking more guidance from superintendents and exposure to high-level responsibilities like budgeting and planning. ✅ Workplace Culture is a Priority: Future superintendents aim to build positive, engaged team environments. ✅ Education Requirements are Changing: While valuable, a 4-year degree is no longer seen as essential—2-year programs and on-the-job experience are gaining traction. ✅ Career Transparency is Needed: Assistants want clear pathways for advancement and open discussions about compensation. Soundbytes: "Many assistants expressed a common frustration: they don't feel seen or taken seriously by their superintendents. They're looking for mentorship, career guidance, and a clear path forward—but often feel left to figure it out on their own." (12:04) “With nearly 40% of courses now under management companies, there's a growing demand for experienced professionals who can step into a role and stay. It's no different than a highly skilled mechanic choosing to specialize rather than running the whole shop. You can carve out a successful career in this space without necessarily wearing the superintendent hat." (20:07) Key Quotes: "One of the things that really stood out to me was how many assistants mentioned in their comments that they had changed jobs multiple times—always searching for the right mentor, the right teacher, the right guide to help them take the next step in their career." "Many people don't fully appreciate—or perhaps don't even realize—just how early golf course teams start their day.”"It's no different than diagnosing a turfgrass issue. If you're dealing with a problem, you don't hesitate to call an expert and ask." “It's on them to ask the right questions, to communicate that they're looking for guidance, career development, and mentorship. And if that doesn't align with what's happening in a particular agronomy department? Then it's time to move on and find a place that does." "Some people are realizing they'd rather be at a B+ club where work-life balance is better, rather than pushing for that A+ club experience, where the demands can be overwhelming." Richard Sherman reacts to Jared Goff and the Detroit Lions getting revenge for last year's NFC Championship loss with a 40-34 victory over Brock Purdy and the San Francisco 49ers. The win sets up a showdown with Sam Darnold and the Minnesota Vikings to decide the top seed in the NFC. Sherm previews the epic Week 18 matchup between Dan Campbell and Kevin O'Connell's 14-2 squads, breaks down what the 49ers and Seattle Seahawks need to do this NFL offseason to right their ships, blasts the NFL rulebook for allowing the block by Green Bay Packers tight end Tucker Kraft that injured Vikings linebacker Pat Jones, and explains why Patrick Mahomes' Kansas City Chiefs and Josh Allen's Buffalo Bills will be anxiously waiting to see if Joe Burrow and the Cincinnati Bengals sneak into the NFL Playoff. #volume #herdSee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

We're thrilled to bring you the first episode of the Leadership on the Links podcast with guest expert Pat Jones! Pat has been a passionate advocate for superintendents and the golf industry for 30 years. As head of Flagstick LLC, he uses that passion to help organizations communicate with customers and drive sales more effectively and efficiently. Pat has been a business media executive for most of his adult life, profitably steering the sales and editorial operations of Golf Course Industry, Lawn & Landscape, Golfdom, and GCM. He specializes in researching and tracking the state of the golf course maintenance market and shining a spotlight on the industry's best people, practices, and products. Pat is also a frequent keynoter at conferences and industry events. In this episode, Pat and Tyler break down our recent 2024 Golf Course Superintendent Employment Trend Report, including steps you can take to market yourself more effectively and prepare for the next level in your career.  The #1 Skill Golf Course Superintendents Want to Learn We had over 300 respondents for our 2024 Golf Course Superintendent Employment Trend Report, but what was most interesting was the qualitative data. The verbatim comments provided deep insights into how satisfied superintendents are with their careers, what worries them, and what they need to go to the next level. Although some superintendents mentioned the need for certifications or better leadership skills, the overwhelming majority felt they needed to become better communicators–to tell their stories, expand their network of contacts, and sell themselves more effectively.  In general, our respondents felt good about their jobs, but 43% said they were waiting for the next opportunity to come along (either within their organization or at another club), which makes communication even more vital.  Pat recommends superintendents share their goals with their team and board members regularly. Keep people informed about what you're doing and why. Not only is this a great way to hone your communication skills, but it will also position you for that next opportunity when it becomes available. Biggest Challenges The biggest worry for superintendents in 2024 is managing club expectations. Many respondents said they feel pressure to create perfect course conditions, even though they don't have the resources. The other major theme was work-life balance. Superintendents are increasingly standing firm on work-life balance, with 80% actively working on improving their well-being Gone are the days when superintendents were happy to put in 90-hour weeks and miss their kids' baseball games. Many respondents said they've started communicating with their leadership about mental health, while others are working on their own internalized expectations and making more time for family, hobbies, and exercise. Hit play on this episode to hear the full report breakdown with insights from Pat Jones… Quotes “That's what this industry is all about, the relationships and the people we've gotten to know over the years.” “It's a small, small business…if you know a couple hundred people, chances are pretty good you can be successful with those relationships.” “Networking and communications–it all comes back to that.” “Train, trust, and delegate.” “The #1 piece of advice for building a good team and being a good leader and a good manager of people was to get to know them as human beings and not just as somebody who punches a clock.” Links mentioned in this episode: The Flagstick Blog: https://www.patjonesflagstick.com/  Connect with Pat on LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/pat-jones-226766b0/  Send Pat an email: patjonesgolf@gmail.com

Pythagoras Was Wrong About Music | Biochar's Potential For Carbon Capture

The Greek philosopher Pythagoras had specific ideas about the mathematical ratios behind music. It turns out that he was wrong. Also, the charcoal-like substance known as biochar packs carbon into a stable form, making it less likely to escape into the atmosphere.Pythagoras Was Wrong About MusicThe ancient Greek philosopher Pythagoras proposed a mathematical argument for what music sounds best to the ear: According to legend, he said listeners preferred music with chords adhering to perfect mathematical ratios, like 3:2. This concept has persisted in modern Western music, specifically for building harmonies. But new research out of the University of Cambridge disputes this idea. A set of behavioral experiments with more than 4,000 participants in the US and South Korea found that listeners actually prefer chords with a slightly imperfect mathematical ratio, particularly when played with non-Western instruments.Tim Revell, deputy US editor of New Scientist joins Ira to talk through this story, as well as other big science stories of the week, including a big change to YouTube's algorithm, a new battery breakthrough for electric cars, and the Smokehouse Creek Fire in Texas.Farmers And Environmentalists Alike Are Excited About BiocharIn a former biomass plant in Greenville, wood chips are flowing from hoppers into long tubes about three feet in diameter.Pat Jones is the president of Clean Maine Carbon, which burns wood in high-temperature, low-oxygen conditions known as pyrolysis. “It starts out as wood” he said. “And as you can see when we come over here what comes out the other end is biochar.”In the quest for climate solutions, Jones is among the Maine entrepreneurs banking on this charcoal-like substance. They say it can bind up carbon for decades, and improve agricultural soils at the same time. The end product has high carbon density, and is very stable, so less of the carbon will be released into the atmosphere than if it were left to decompose. So while Jones is making biochar, his business plan is focused on selling carbon credits to corporations.Read more at sciencefriday.com.Transcripts for each segment will be available after the show airs on sciencefriday.com. Ben Nunery is the co-founder and brain behind the incredible work at Powerhouse Factories, which makes “kick-ass design work for kick-ass bands.” Ben and a friend started Powerhouse out of a garage in 1999, and since his work has been used for artists like The Black Keys and Lizzo, and brands like Herbal Essences and Redbull. He is, at his core, a creative strategist with a passion for the ways music and design evoke emotional responses in people, but also a music knowledge connoisseur. Today, Ben sits down with us (live and in person!) to talk shop about how he built his brand from a garage to a full-blown media corporation. He dives into all things creative - from the art of printmaking to the intersection of music and marketing - teaching us that so long as you have the ideas, the drive, and a good partner, you can make your passions your day job.                                                                       Here are some of the notes we hit: What poster bombing on college campuses can teach you about consumer behavior. Why over-inspiring yourself with the work of others is actually counterproductive. NFTs are defining a growing movement - why jumping on board could be your big break. Why not having resources can actually spur creativity. Going into business with your friend can work - if you treat it like a marriage. How working out of a garage can turn into working for top global brands.   Must-reads from this episode:  Show Posters by Pat Jones and Ben Nunery

Hanging out at the DMV, a ukulele standard about Catalina, and the good feeling music of the Big Chill generation. Dent May “Known for shepherding a kind of classic American songwriting into the age of bedroom recording, Mississippi born musician Dent May is soaking it in and taking his time on his new LP Late Checkout. After contributing heavily to his local Oxford music and art community, May began putting songs online and performing alone under his birth name in 2007. After befriending Animal Collective while they were recording Merriweather Post Pavilion in Oxford, the band offered to release May's debut The Good Feeling Music Of Dent May & His Magnificent Ukulele (2009) through their record label Paw Tracks. May's distinctive croon and sentimental writing won over fans around the globe, and his music continued to evolve on Do Things (2012) and Warm Blanket (2013). Pining for a new scene and life in a big city, May moved to Los Angeles in 2015 and began work on his sprawling epic Across the Multiverse (2017). His first record on Carpark, Across the Multiverse saw May taking his songwriting to the far reaches of home recording with expansive arrangements and illustrative lyrics. Following the release of Across the Multiverse, May set out for a new final frontier—his own recording studio. May partnered with friends and collaborators Pat Jones and Michael Rosen to construct Honeymoon Suite Recording Studio from scratch, and began recording himself and other artists there in January 2018. May afforded himself the time to gradually craft a new hi-fi pop alchemy on the songs for Late Checkout, while still aiming for a sparse intimacy in his arrangements. Across the dozen new tracks that make up his fifth LP, May grapples with the swinging emotions of our contemporary reality with his rare optimism and distinguished sound. Late Checkout arrives August 21st via Carpark.” Excerpt from https://www.dentmay.com/dentmayabout Dent May: Bandcamp: https://dentmay.bandcamp.com/music Instagram: @dentmay Website: https://www.dentmay.com Merch: https://dentmay.bandcamp.com/merch The Vineyard: Instagram: @thevineyardpodcast Website: https://www.thevineyardpodcast.com Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/show/5Ndle3K... Gundy's coaching journey is one of hard work, determination, and never giving up…even when it would've been easy to call it quits. It wasn't until 2002—Gundy's second season after returning to the Cowboys from stops at Baylor and Maryland—that he finally tasted the success of a winning season. Gundy would serve four years as the offensive coordinator under Les Miles before getting the call to lead the program on his own as the 22nd head coach in Cowboy football history. Now in his 18th season, Gundy is the second-longest tenured coach in college football, trailing only Iowa's Kirk Ferentz. And with seven 10-win seasons under his belt, he's proving to be the best to ever do it at OSU.

(0:02) Emmett Moten Jr., a 79-year-old member of Gesu Parish in Detroit, talks about growing up Catholic as an African-American in the South, where racism and segregation were prevalent parts of daily life. (2:00) Pat Jones, a writer, producer, storyteller and parishioner of Gesu, talks about her latest initiative, The Elders Project, in which she seeks to capture the stories of older Gesu parishioners like Moten and 95-year-old Beatrice Ward, the first Black woman to integrate Gesu School in 1963, to preserve for future generations. (4:55) Jones describes the urgency of the project. Each year, dozens of Gesu parishioners pass away, and with them, generational stories of faith that define the century-old parish and its community. Fr. Lorn Snow, SJ, Gesu's pastor, talks about his support for the project. (7:30) Moten talks about his interactions with Jones, who persuaded him to tell his story, which includes anecdotes about his childhood, living through segregation not only in the wider culture, but even in the Church. (10:38) Jones describes the emotions of listening to stories like Moten's and Ward's. Many of the stories The Elders Project seeks to capture bring up a wide range of emotion both for listeners and for the storytellers themselves, Jones says. (12:37) Jones talks about her desire to grow the project by capturing stories from dozens of Gesu parishioners, and eventually, expanding the vision to other parishes. She describes the resiliency of the Gesu community. (15:01) Jones and Fr. Snow make the connection between storytelling and evangelization. Fr. Snow calls the project “an incredible tool” for evangelization, given the personal faith and testimonies of the elders being interviewed. (16:56) The narrator describes the importance of capturing stories from “the Silent Generation” — who remains dutifully present for daily Mass, adoration and ministries in parishes across the Archdiocese of Detroit — before it's too late.
