http://www.sherylkline.com/blogIn the latest Fearless Female Leadership interview, I had the honor of speaking with Lisa Abbott, Executive Vice President and Chief Human Resource Officer at Boston Children's Hospital, about the journey from “the knot” to Everest—both literal and metaphorical. Lisa's story is an incredible example of how discomfort, determination, and asking for help can lead to powerful transformation.Growing up in challenging circumstances, Lisa was influenced early on by teachers and mentors who saw her potential even before she did. That belief, along with her own courage and adaptability, helped her navigate a winding career path—starting in IT, moving into HR, and ultimately rising to the C-suite in healthcare despite not having a traditional background in the industry.Lisa also shared a deeply personal metaphor from her childhood: the gym-class rope. As a child, she couldn't climb past the knot. But years later, she not only found the strength to climb literal ropes, she also trekked to Everest Base Camp—proving how far we can go when we step into discomfort and persist. Her reflections on how to overcome inertia, build inner and outer support systems, and redefine one's “Everest” offer rich insight for any leader in transition or growth.Key takeaways from the interview:0:01:16 – Lisa was inspired by teachers and mentors who believed in her during difficult family circumstances, setting a foundation of resilience and gratitude.0:03:28 – If someone sees potential in you, trust their vision—especially when you don't yet see it yourself.0:05:04 – Own both your expertise and your limitations with confidence; people respect authenticity and clarity.0:10:00 – Lisa's career path was anything but linear—from IT to HR to healthcare—and she credits her growth to being open, curious, and patient during uncertain phases.0:13:16 – The story of “the knot” is a powerful metaphor: what once felt like shame became a source of strength as she ultimately climbed to Everest Base Camp.0:16:05 – Progress comes from breaking goals into small, manageable chunks. Don't aim for the summit in one leap—focus on the next step.0:17:12 – Seek out people who inspire you and actively network, even if it feels intimidating. Exposure leads to insight and opportunity.0:20:00 – Reassess your inner circle. Sometimes, growth requires distancing from those who hold you back.0:22:16 – Be intentional when reaching out to mentors. Bring gratitude, curiosity, and perhaps even insight of your own.0:25:49 – Identify your “knot” moment—the early experience that shaped you—and ask yourself how it can be transformed into fuel for growthIf you're interested in being featured on the Fearless Female Leadership podcast, or you're a leader looking to gain clarity on ‘what's next', how to build more cohesive and high-performing teams, and lead with greater confidence and influence, let's have a confidential conversation.Cheering you on always!– Sheryl

http://www.sherylkline.com/blogIn the latest Fearless Female Leadership interview, I had the incredible opportunity to speak with Kimberly Evans, Executive Vice President, Head of Corporate Sustainability, Inclusion, and Social Impact at Northern Trust. Kimberly's story is a powerful testament to the strength of purpose, the power of people-centered leadership, and the importance of seeking value over validation.Rooted in humble beginnings, Kim shared how her mother's example of selflessness and generosity shaped her entire approach to leadership. A defining childhood moment—watching her mother put groceries back at checkout—fueled her lifelong “why”: to succeed so her mom would never have to go without again. That clarity of purpose has guided Kimberly through the financial services industry, where she's often been the only woman—and sometimes the only person of color—in the room.Kimberly emphasized that success doesn't require fitting a mold, but rather leveraging resilience, adaptive capacity, and emotional intelligence. She challenges leaders to mine for talent where others don't look, build teams around transferable skills, and invest in people, not résumés. Her mindset of “let your why find the way” and her philosophy of seeking value versus validation are lessons for leaders at every level.Key takeaways from the interview:0:02:34 – Kim's mother modeled selflessness and community care, even when resources were scarce—a lesson that shaped her leadership philosophy.0:07:53 – At just six years old, Kim vowed to succeed so her mother would never have to put groceries back again—a promise that became her lifelong "why."0:08:46 – Lacking a traditional finance background, Kim leaned on mindset, mentors, and resilience to thrive in a male-dominated industry.0:13:54 – The current talent landscape demands adaptive capacity over rigid experience; success belongs to the curious, the coachable, and the resilient.0:15:01 – Talent is everywhere—opportunity is not. Leaders must “mine for talent” in unexpected places and value lived experience as much as formal credentials.0:17:35 – Focus on people who can “learn as they go and grow”—these are the leaders of the future in an AI-disrupted world.0:21:09 – Kim's personal framework: the 3+1 R's—Readiness, Resilience, Relevance, and Relationships.0:22:37 – Leaders should seek value, not validation; external approval is fleeting, but knowing your worth creates lasting confidence and clarity.0:24:08 – You may not control the validation you receive—but you always control the value you deliver.0:25:00 – True growth happens outside of comfort zones. Kim reminds us: stay in the game, trust your “why,” and lead with heart. If you're interested in being featured on the Fearless Female Leadership podcast, or you're a leader looking to gain clarity on ‘what's next', how to build more cohesive and high-performing teams, and lead with greater confidence and influence, let's have a confidential conversation. http://www.sherylkline.com/blogIn the latest Fearless Female Leadership interview, I had the privilege of speaking with Johnita Due, the Executive Vice President of Integrity and Inclusion for CNN and TNT Sports. Johnita's story is one of purpose, resilience, and deep conviction. She spoke about using her voice—and helping others find theirs—at the highest levels of media and corporate leadership.Johnita's foundation was shaped early by her parents, both civil rights leaders. Her mother led the first jail-in during the movement, and her father, a “freedom lawyer,” modeled activism through law. Inspired by their work, Johnita pursued law with a vision to create change—not just in courtrooms, but in boardrooms and newsrooms. Her journey into media law allowed her to amplify underrepresented voices through journalism and storytelling. Now, as a leader overseeing both integrity and inclusion, Johnita helps CNN and TNT Sports foster cultures of trust, truth, and equity—internally and externally. She offered candid reflections on being a “double only” in executive spaces, and shared her hard-won wisdom on owning your value, advocating for yourself, and never self-eliminating from opportunity.Key takeaways from the interview:0:01:01 – Johnita's fierce drive to make a difference was shaped by her parents' activism during the Civil Rights Movement.0:03:10 – Her mother empowered her to pursue impact in boardrooms and classrooms—not just the courtroom.0:05:05 – Media law became her unexpected but perfect path to support truth, access to information, and representation.0:08:37 – Her journey was not linear; mentors and early exposure to diverse perspectives shaped her leadership rise.0:14:26 – Giving voice means creating a safe space for employees to share ideas, feedback, and concerns.0:15:54 – The shift from “giving voice to others” to “empowering others to use their own voice” was a powerful mindset change.0:16:51 – Building a culture of voice and inclusion starts with a clearly stated, company-wide commitment—and accountability.0:20:59 – Generational diversity brings critical insight; young professionals must be encouraged to speak up and share fresh ideas.0:22:57 – Companies that deprioritize voice and inclusion risk disengagement, stagnation, and lost innovation.0:25:15 – Her advice: don't self-eliminate. Advocate for yourself, know your worth, and never let a third party define your value. If you're interested in being featured on the Fearless Female Leadership podcast, or you're a leader looking to gain clarity on "what's next," how to build more cohesive and high-performing teams, and lead with greater confidence and influence, let's have a confidential conversation.Cheering you on always!– Sheryl

Brian W. King joined ADS in September 2020 and serves as Executive Vice President, Product Management and Marketing. Mr. King came to the Company with over 25 years of product management and marketing experience in both consumer and commercial businesses. From 2013 to September 2020, Mr. King worked at Owens Corning, a Toledo, Ohio-based company that develops and produces insulation, roofing and fiberglass composites and related materials, serving as Vice President, Strategic Marketing from 2016 to 2020 and Director of Strategic Marketing from 2015 to 2016. Prior to Mr. King's role at Owens Corning, he held leadership positions at The Stanley Works, Elmer's Products Inc., and Avery Dennison Corporation. He holds a Bachelor of Commerce from McMaster University. He has received certifications in Marketing Management and Executive Education from York University and the University of North Carolina respectively. Brian Joins Sustainable Nation to Discuss: ADS' plastic recycling operations and achievements Strategic efforts at ADS to reduce GHG emissions and their recognition as one of America's climate leaders by USA Today Partnerships that advance recycling and sustainability initiatives Advice and recommendations for sustainability professionals Brian's Final Five Questions Responses: What is one piece of advice you would give other sustainability professionals that might help them in their careers? I think we tend to underestimate what change we can make over a decade, and so I think we need to look at change over a longer period. We overestimate what you can do in a year. We're always very aggressive about what you can do in a year, and then we underestimate what you can do over a decade. But if you look back, you find that we've made great change over decades. So I think we need to adjust how we look at how change. The change we make and the impact that we have needs to be longer term. What are you most excited about right now in the world of sustainability? I get really excited when people say plastics recycling doesn't work, because it does. Even though there's no silver bullet in solving the plastics problem. Because plastics in the environment is a problem, and we need to work together to solve that. I get pretty excited because a lot of people tell us that plastics recycling doesn't work, and ADS is an example that, yes, it does. We can actually effectively create circular economies for plastics and we can help to solve the plastic problem. That excites me because that is a big deal. What is one book you'd recommend sustainability leaders read? My favorite is Cradle to Cradle. It's remaking the way that we make things. As someone who's done product management for a lot of their career, sustainability is key to product management. We need to think about end of life. When you design a product, it shouldn't just be around the economic value or the features and benefits or the value proposition that the product's delivering. You need to think about what happens at the end of life. Cradle to Cradle is a great way to open your eyes to that. What are some of your favorite resources or tools that really help you in your work? We talked about one of them, being partners with groups like the Recycling Partnership. There's passionate individuals, people who are doing things across the country that you can hear from. The Ohio State Sustainability Institute being another one I talked about. Talking to those like minded companies, talking to those like minded people, people finding those like minded organizations out there that are aligned with what it is that you want to do from a sustainability perspective. Sustainability professionals listen to this. We have to make sure we make those connections because some of the best resources are talking to people about what they've learned, what failed, what worked. That gets me really excited. Where can our listeners go to learn more about you and the work being done at ADS? If anyone wants to email me here at ADS, it's brian.king@adspipe.com. I'm on LinkedIn, Brian W. King.
