I'll admit, I was not quite ready for the 2023 season to end. A season that had once been virtually left for dead had come roaring back to life over the last couple months and I had sorta talked myself into the belief that this season was destined to end at MLS Cup. Maybe not actually lifting, but at least making a valiant charge, maybe even with Nicolas Lodeiro and Raúl Ruidiaz putting in a couple notable performances along the way. Nothing I saw against LAFC totally dissuaded me from believing that outcome was at least plausible, but the 1-0 loss at least means it's no longer possible. If I'm to pull back a little, I suppose the final game was rather predictable. The Sounders played reasonably well -- I think you can even say they outplayed LAFC -- but couldn't convert their chances, while LAFC made the most of theirs. Maxime Crepeau is a big reason why the sounders couldn't convert, but the decisive factor ending up being the most predictable thing ever: Denis Buounga racing down the left wing and firing an absolute laser past Stefan Frei. Seattle Sounders FC Head Coach Brian Schmetzer joins Dave Softy Mahler and Dick Fain to talk about the playoffs starting against FC Dallas on Monday at home after a win in St. Louis last week and Nicolas Lodeiro saying this is his final year playing in Seattle.
Tonight on Sounders Weekly, Jackson Felts looks ahead to Seattle's first round playoff matchup against Dallas with MLS Broadcaster Brian Dunseth, gets the scoop on Nicolas Lodeiro's future with Niko Moreno of El Pulso, then goes Around the League with Ari Liljenwall and Around the Sound with Andrew Harvey.
The Sounders finally scored a goal at home. It only took 405 minutes, but they did and it was enough to snap a five-game winless run. As luck would have it, they also moved up to second in the Western Conference table thanks to LAFC losing to the LA Galaxy, allowing the Sounders to inch ahead on goal-difference. The goal, it should be said, was very well-taken. It started with Obed Vargas driving forward to find Nicolas Lodeiro, who worked a 1-2 with Léo Chu, who then found Albert Rusnak for a left-footed finish from about six yards out. Sure, it came after the Houston Dynamo were reduced to 10 men but we are in no position to be questioning goals at this point. Is everything fixed? Of course not. But it sure is a lot more fun to talk about wins than a scoring drought. Sponsors Full Pull Wines Watson's Counter If you'd like to become a subscriber to our Substack, that can be found here. Somewhat remarkably, the Sounders still find themselves coming out of the Gold Cup break undefeated through 13 games. They're sitting atop the Supporters' Shield standings with 29 points and have easily the best goal-difference at +15. More remarkable than all of that is they've managed this while missing as many as six potential starters for solid chunks of the season. Their latest win over the Houston Dynamo came without Nicolas Lodeiro, Stefan Frei, Nouhou, Shane O'Neill, Cristian Roldan and Will Bruin, which isn't even a complete list. We talk a ton about that but also get into things like Leagues Cup and whether or not we should care. In so many ways, 2016 has been the worst season in Seattle Sounders history. It started with one of the most tumultuous offseasons in their brief history as they lost several fan favorites, including Obafemi Martins. It continued with frustrating loss to Club America in CONCACAF Champions League and into the regular season with three straight losses, a 6-12-2 start and a week spent in last place. Even one of the biggest highlights — signing Nicolas Lodeiro — was preceded by nasty negotiations with Boca Juniors and followed by Clint Dempsey's heart issues. There were off-field issues as well, starting with the whole mobile-ticketing fiasco and several public disagreements between the front office and supporters groups. Given all that, it's not shocking that Adrian Hanauer still has mixed emotions heading into Saturday's MLS Cup, as he admits that he takes each failure personally. We talked to Hanauer in his Pioneer Square office above The Ninety on Thursday for what we feel is some interesting insight into a season that may well end on the highest high in Seattle soccer history.

Soccer doesn’t take a break for the holidays, and neither do Andrew and Dave in the wake of the first leg of the Conference Championships. With Matt off eating brisket in Texas somewhere, the guys celebrate Thanksgiving in the broom closet by breaking down the return of the 2016 Audi MLS Cup Playoffs on Tuesday night. First up, the measurement snafu at Olympic Stadium that delayed the game for half an hour, but has David making Copa Libertadores comparisons. Let’s just say it was memorable. The delay didn’t effect the Impact, who jumped out to a 3-0 lead that had Toronto FC fans thinking déjà vu following last season’s playoff disappointment. Only it wasn’t to be, as the Reds stormed back to grab two away goals. In the late game, it was a similar tale. Colorado scored first, but Seattle quickly found their feet and ended up with a 2-1 win at home that sets up a tantalizing second leg on Sunday afternoon. Sounders right back Tyrone Mears could make the difference in that game, and he calls in to chat with the guys about the playoff atmosphere in Seattle, the team’s up-and-down 2016 campaign, Nicolas Lodeiro’s class, Jordan Morris’ future, Roman Torres’ dance moves and an international career that took some strange turns. Then Dave and Andrew offer their takes on Bruce Arena’s new/old post with the US national team and Celtic’s rumored interest in Darlington Nagbe. In the mailbag, it’s time to give thanks. For the soccer community, for MLS, for everything that makes the beautiful game unique in the United States and Canada.
Hopefully you've read Richard Farley's excellent article that details much of the work and effort that went into analyzing and vetting Nicolas Lodeiro's signing. If you haven't, you may as well do so now because it takes awhile and if you start now you might be finished by the time Farley joins us on the show in the second segment. There's a lot of stuff in here that readers of this site probably have heard, but there are still some nuggets that are absolutely fascinating. The most notable is that the Sounders have apparently developed some kind of program that allows them to compare players across various leagues and gives them an idea of how they'll perform in MLS. In any case, Lodeiro was their obvious top target and GM Garth Lagerwey seems to suggest he was willing to sacrifice this year if it meant signing the guy the organization really wanted. Jeremiah, Aaron and Richard also discuss the Sounders' recent run of good form and look forward to the massive Cascadia Cup clash on Sunday. Oh, and they name this the winner of the #shoephone meme contest.

Big news in the Twin Cities. Ahead of MLS and Minnesota United’s major announcement on Friday(Live stream at MLSsoccer.com, 7 pm ET), the guys bring in FiftyFiveOne’s Wes Burdine to give the lowdown on soccer in Minneapolis-St. Paul, the ethos of the club and its fans and the stadium designs that have the Dark Cloud’s hyped for the future. In the second segment, it’s back to the business at hand. The MLS Cup Playoff races are in full swing, and there are plenty of marquee matchups this weekend that could push teams above or below the red line. With the Galaxy headed to the Bronx, who’s having the better season: Frank Lampard or Steven Gerrard? With the Sounders and Nicolas Lodeiro set to host the Timbers, which side will walk away with their heads held high in what amounts to a six-pointer? Plus, Atlantic Cup action and a Toronto-Philly matchup that could be a preview of the Eastern Conference Championship. The mailbag begins with some USMNT news in Europe, then the guys ponder questions about Kei Kamara’s role in Crew SC’s tough season and Jozy Altidore’s resurgence as he comes back from injury.

Just when this season seemed lost, when you thought you might get your weekends back or at least were prepared to stop worrying about results, they pulled us back in. Sure, the Seattle Sounders' 3-1 win over Orlando City was just one win and the standings are pretty much unchanged, but Aaron, Jeremiah and Likkit are feeling ... hope. It's still a long shot and it could be ripped away with a loss against Real Salt Lake, but the Nos Audietis group actually sees something positive on the horizon. And even if they don't make the playoffs, this run toward the end of the season at least promises to be interesting. Beyond being competitive, the Sounders are just fun to watch right now. There's a joy to the team since Nicolas Lodeiro's addition and it appears to be infectious.

It has been two weeks since we last recorded and ... wow did a lot happen. The Seattle Sounders scored a seemingly massive win over first-place FC Dallas only to drop a disheartening loss to the Portland Timbers, suffer an epic collapse at the hands of the LA Galaxy in the U.S. Open Cup and turn in one of the worst performances in franchise history while losing to Sporting Kansas City. But we barely even had time to talk about any of that after this week's twin bombshells: The presumed signing of Nicolas Lodeiro and the "mutual parting of ways" with head coach Sigi Schmid. Among the topics covered: Whether or not Schmid deserved to be the one falling on the sword, how much blame falls at the feet of GM Garth Lagerwey, if Nicolas Lodeiro is capable of saving the season and if Brian Schmetzer has any hope of becoming the permanent head coach.
