I'll admit, I was not quite ready for the 2023 season to end. A season that had once been virtually left for dead had come roaring back to life over the last couple months and I had sorta talked myself into the belief that this season was destined to end at MLS Cup. Maybe not actually lifting, but at least making a valiant charge, maybe even with Nicolas Lodeiro and Raúl Ruidiaz putting in a couple notable performances along the way. Nothing I saw against LAFC totally dissuaded me from believing that outcome was at least plausible, but the 1-0 loss at least means it's no longer possible. If I'm to pull back a little, I suppose the final game was rather predictable. The Sounders played reasonably well -- I think you can even say they outplayed LAFC -- but couldn't convert their chances, while LAFC made the most of theirs. Maxime Crepeau is a big reason why the sounders couldn't convert, but the decisive factor ending up being the most predictable thing ever: Denis Buounga racing down the left wing and firing an absolute laser past Stefan Frei.
After a bit of a break, MLS, LAFC, and the Defenders are back at it, and boy does it feel good to be back. Sitting just 2 episodes away from 200, Filly and the Scarf recap all the goings-on in the Emerald City. It's Episode 198 of "The Most LAFC Podcast on Earth!", Defenders of the Banc. In what we hope will be a preview of the eventual Western Conference Final, LAFC travels to the Pacific Northwest to take on the Seattle Sounders, the recent CCL Champions and very familiar foe of the Black and Gold. Scarf, Nina, and Panda all traveled to Lumen Field for the match, while Filly held it down at the official watch party near USC. LAFC looked to remain at the top of the table while MLS celebrated Juneteenth league-wide. One storyline going into the match would be who would NOT be playing. For Seattle, Joao Paulo is out for the season while Yeimar and Ruidiaz would be out for the match. On our side of things, while we still await the debut of Eddie Segura, we were missing Brian Rodriguez due to travel issues (he's getting his green card) while Kellyn Acosta, Carlos Vela, Mamadou Fall, and Franco Escobar all would begin the match on the bench. After a beautiful rendition of "Lift Every Voice and Sing", the match played out a bit like a heavyweight fight, with both prizefighters feeling each other out for the first half. Seattle had more opportunities of quality, but both sides would enter the half without a goal. It was Seattle's major offseason acquisition, Albert Rusnak, who would score first, off a perfect pass from... Maxime Crepeau. It was a gaffe that Maxime immediately copped to, and one that looked like it would doom LAFC on the road. However, just 6 minutes after making his LAFC debut, Danny Trejo, the kid from Mendota, battled for a header that found Chicho in the box. With Stefan Frei badly out of position, Arango's header goes over Frei but under the bar for a 79th minute equalizer, and LAFC would take a point home with them from the Emerald City. Quite the debut for Trejo, LAFC's first round pick of a year ago. Also on this episode, much like Bo Jackson in the 90's, Filly gives himself a new nickname, Scarf has his greatest moment at a pool table (with witnesses!), and both The Ghost and Three Umlauts get a mention! Just two episodes away from another huge milestone, so stay tuned for all the fun, but in the meantime, enjoy Episode 198!
Brian Schmetzer, Seattle Sounders FC Head Coach, joins Dave Softy Mahler and Jackson Felts to talk about the World Cup officially coming to Seattle in 2026, Raul Ruidiaz being injured for the next couple games, and the team facing LAFC Saturday.
In typical Sounders fashion, the team won another close one vs. Charlotte where they were not at their best, begging the question, is the sign of a champion really one who wins while not at their best (even if it happens every week?), or are better performances necessary? Plus, could the Sounders have a new signing on the way? Jake and Brett break it down for you on this week's episode of Sounder and Son.
Seattle Sounders FC Head Coach Brian Schmetzer joins Dave Softy Mahler and Dick Fain to talk about what happened in their 2-1 comeback win over Charlotte on Sunday, Raul Ruidiaz's goal from distance, the opposing coach being fired this morning, and having a two week break before the next game at home.

Looks like the band is back together, and by band we mean two dudes who used to do magic in Utah. Fredy Montero is teaching Nouhou how to wax, Ruidiaz gets his green card, and Arreaga gets his red card (probably). TLDL - don’t be the third guy to get bonked. Learn more about your ad choices. Who is the best No. 9 in MLS? Josef? Gyasi? Ruidiaz? Chicharito? Pulido? Other? Calen Carr gives his Top 5 (1:12:17) after the guys dig through Concacaf Olympic qualifying and four more 2021 season previews. First up, Minnesota United, who are a Top 3 team in the West according to Doyle and have Bebelo Reynoso to thank for it. Meanwhile, Wiebe is rooting for the Fire to ditch the Keystone Cops routine, the Red Bulls are going all-in on the press but the year isn’t 2016 or 2018 and Chicharito definitely isn’t the most interesting thing about the Galaxy. In the strangest of seasons, with the oddest of circumstances, amidst incredible adversity and numerous challenges, despite injuries, COVID, trades, international breaks, poor play, impromptu tournaments, and more COVID, LAFC began their third playoff run in their young club’s history. This run would start, and end, against a familiar foe in a familiar spot with an unfamiliar name, as the Seattle Sounders hosted LAFC in the house formerly known as CenturyLink Field, now known as Lumen Field. Seattle has largely been able to avoid both the injury bug and the coronavirus, and, as such, entered the playoffs relatively healthy. LAFC, on the other hand, would be missing five key figures from their 2020 season: Diego Rossi, Brian Rodriguez, Jose Cifuentes, and Diego Palacios, all of whom we knew would be out with COVID, and, surprisingly, Danny Musovski, also “Not Medically Cleared”. Andy Najar also did not play. Water is also wet. LAFC hoped to exact revenge on Seattle, but, as many of our expectations in 2020, it was not to be. It took just 18 minutes for Seattle to find themselves, as the three-headed monster of Ruidiaz-Morris-Lodeiro connect for the first goal of the match. LAfC looked to equalize just a minute later as Carlos Vela earned a PK. It was not to be however, as, for the first time in his last 19, Stefan Frei was able to make what turned out to be a remarkably easy save. Near misses by both sides bring us to a 1-0 half where both sides may have felt lucky to get into the locker room. LAFC looked to turn things around with a few subs and came out on the attack to start the second half. Mahala, Mohamed El-Munir, and Adrien Perez injected some life into the Black and Gold side as Vela moved to the middle of the attack, but Seattle created better chances en route to an eventual second goal, this one for Ruidiaz off a corner. LAFC found new life as Carlos Vela found a streaking Eduard Atuesta to pull one back, but the momentum lasted all of 3 minutes before that same three-headed monster put the match away behind a goal from Jordan Morris. LAFC had one correctly (barely) waved off via VAR as Seattle killed off the rest of the match to advance, convincingly, 3-1, and continue their title defense. To be the man, you have to beat the man. Tonight, LAFC was beaten by the man, and, just like that, the longest, strangest trip that was the 2020 season comes to an end. Also on this episode, Filly sings while Scarf sings the praises of Angel City FC. We wish a happy birthday to a recently retired member of Black and Gold history, share news of expanding trophy cases for several of our players, and lament the disaster that was the international break for our club. We also celebrate UCLA’s newest Bruin from the LAFC Academy, Lawndale’s own Mauricio Gutierrez while discussing the latest transfer destination for one of our players. Carlos Vela takes home tops honors in kit sales while the Defenders update their Postmates app to order all the finest LAFC threads. So much to talk about, so little time. Finally, we spend the last few moments of our episode thanking you, Defenders Nation, the millions… and millions of the Black and Gold Faithful. We could not and would not be here without you. We’ve got at least three more episodes planned in the 2020 calendar year, including getting ready for CCL against Cruz Azul. Please take a second to listen to the last few minutes, our thank you to you. Take a deep breath. Exhale out all the garbage that was 2020. And until then, see you on Episode 131!
Nat and David recap matches against RSL, LAFC, San Jose, and Portland. They discuss the lineup returning to full strength as the MLS regular season enters the home stretch. Keep your Scarves Up!

Chrissy Teigen is here for a Sounders victory, are you? Susannah and Jillian recap their MLS Cup experiences and try to track down some hats. Small plates, 69, 274 fans, and Michael Bradley run ins. The ladies and the Sounders are popping bottles, so come on and join the celebration!
As we do every Tuesday night at 5, we talk to the coach of the Sounders, Brian Schmetzer about the victory over Toronto and what we've learned, we find out if Ruidiaz is playing this week, and Brian talks a little about his dad, Walter Schmetzer, who passed away last week. In case you haven't heard the awkward Russell Wilson audio, we've got that plus a number of other great sound clips from around the world of sports on Fun with Audio. People seem to be lashing out at Russ for the video as if he did something wrong, but was it really that bad? A little awkward, yes. At this point, this is the thing you should come to expect from him. If you don't like it, don't follow him. The M's try once again for a wins against the Cleveland Indians. We set te lineups and hear from the skipper on Baseball's Best Pre-Game Show. The Stanley Cup Finals are underway. There's no better time to check in with Dave Tippett, NHL Seattle senior adviser to get his thoughts on how the opening round has gone so far, fights in hockey, news from our new team, and more.

Recorded 7/24/18 Ian & Aaron discuss the limbo the Mariners are currently in and what does that +1 run differential mean? Earl Thomas has now asked Oakland to take him... ugh. LeBron and his approved signings are discussed with the latest being Michael Beasely. What do this 1 year veteran contracts mean for the #LakeShow in 2018-19? Scuttlebutt covers a little bit of that World Cup Final and the Sounders latest two games (ATL and Whitecraps). Ruidiaz set to help the turnaround we need and (Aaron) still believes in. We cover Star Wars Rebels coming back to us (YAYAYAYAYAYA) some #dank nerd topics from Aaron & Ian. Oh, and of course our very own #AcrossTheUniverse segment. Come hither!
I mean, c'mon, right?Special guest Tashi Langton @fosssoccer joins Cat, Tim, Steve, and Kevin for a raucous walk through the Portland match, some World Cup shenanigans, a minor studio disaster, and TACTICS. come join the summer fun! We also discuss the problems that Ruidiaz solves, some of our roster choices over the season, and where we might finish this year. It's not as bleak as it looks -- the spread between the good teams and the bad teams in the West is very palpable. Also, youth soccer in the US is WAY too damned expensive and limits our ability to pipe diverse, quality players to men's and women's national clubs. Tim, Nate, and Steve hang out with Superfan, Constant Listener and Channel 253 Member John Murphy @JM_Murf about the state of the team, future prospects, the potential (at time of recording) Ruidiaz signing, outlook for upcoming matches, and more. The Chicago match at home left a lot to be desired from a performance standpoint, but there were some standouts. Frei and Nouhou had a lot to talk about, and Deuce just looked hungry and tired until the goal came. Katai was a beast, to our chagrin, and V8R showed his speed and creativity.
