Welcome in for another edition of the Morning Espresso from the SDH Network, brought to you by Oglethorpe University, Atlanta's premier undergraduate learning experience and soccer powerhouse. Barcelona has not had historical success against Inter or against any Italian clubs for that matter, but they've got to find a way to win today at the San Siro to advance to the Champions League final. After the 3-3 draw last week in Spain, Barca could get Robert Lewandowski back on the bench while Inter might see Benjamin Pavard and Lautaro Martinez back in their group. With only 5 wins all-time in 24 matches in Italy in European competition, and only 1 win in 6 games against Inter in Milan, the odds are stacked against Barcelona today. Simone Inzaghi said he will add to those stacked odds by doubling on Lamine Yamal. Dani Olmo said that Yamal has handled that well and it will lead to Barcelona having a free man so stay tuned. Lamar Hunt US Open Cup Round of 32 starts tonight with 16 MLS teams entering the tournament. Yes, we want all of them in the tournament again and we want the roster rules to be expanded to make that a comfortable process. Please get it done for next year. Interesting matchups tonight include DC hosting Charleston in the Coffee Pot Cup (DC players smashed coffee pots in the locker room in Charleston when they were knocked out of the tournament in 1999), Chattanooga Red Wolves travel to Nashville, while Charlotte travels to Cary to face North Carolina FC. Reportedly, an agreement for Carlo Ancelotti to leave Real Madrid has been reached. Brazil says that they want to name their new coach by next week at the latest, while Madrid wants to see if they can get Xabi Alonso in place before the Club World Cup. You know, your usual telenovela continues in Spain. Also, Madrid wants to get Trent Alexander-Arnold in place before the Club World Cup and might be willing to pay Liverpool to get his transfer done ahead of the tournament rather than when his contract ends in June. Still waiting on news as of press time about the CAS ruling on Club Leon and the Club World Cup spot, that should be announced today so we will know who will face Chelsea on June 16 at Mercedes-Benz Stadium. Upset last night in the Georgia high school playoffs as previously unbeaten Brookwood were knocked out in the girls quarterfinals by Buford 2-1. Johnson of Gainesville had to go back to Calhoun to finish their Round of 16 boys match that was suspended Friday night due to weather, they lost their lead but came back to win 2-1. Now after a 3.5 hour trip back and forth from Gainesville, they have to play against tonight in the quarterfinals. We'll update everything from around the state tonight after the Dalton-St. Pius match. Atlanta Soccer Tonight is live at 11pm on 92.9 The Game and the Audacy app. No Espresso tomorrow morning, we'll be back live on Thursday.
Welcome in for another edition of the Morning Espresso from the SDH Network, brought to you by Oglethorpe University, Atlanta's premier undergraduate learning experience and soccer powerhouse.Atlanta United scored first, but lost control of the match with Nashville afterwards. Following the goal, Nashville outshot Atlanta 10-2 and had 70% possession. They eventually found an equalizer and the match finished in an unfulfilling 1-1 draw. Atlanta is back in action next Saturday in Chicago against the Fire, who will be missing their goalkeeper Chris Brady following his red card in the first half of the Fire's 0-0 draw with Orlando.LA Galaxy lost last night in Kansas City 1-0 even though they didn't concede a shot, the goal was an own goal in the 13th minute. The Galaxy also lost both of their star wingers, Joseph Paintsil and Gabriel Pec, due to injury. Other MLS highlights of note include Vancouver going unbeaten in 10 games after a 2-1 win over RSL, Miami bouncing back from two home losses with a win over Red Bulls, and New England keeping their hot streak going since putting Carles Gil into a free role in their 3-5-2 shape.Parity is alive and well in the NWSL as the top 8 teams are separated by 4 points. Kansas City and Orlando are tied for the top spot with 15 points so far in the season.A verdict is expected tomorrow by the Court of Arbitration for Sport in the Club Leon case against FIFA over their spot in the Club World Cup. If FIFA's ruling is upheld, then we'll see the playoff game between LAFC and Club America go ahead. The winner of that would start the tournament here in Atlanta against Chelsea on June 16. Harry Kane has finally won a trophy after almost 700 games as a pro for club and country. Of course it wasn't straightforward... Bayern drew to RB Leipzig 3-3 on a late goal from the opposition and needed Leverkusen to slip up in their game later in the day, which ended 2-2 giving Bayern the title. Two big promotions, Pisa in Italy and Paris FC in France. Pisa hasn't been in Serie A since 1991 while Paris FC hasn't played in Ligue 1 for 46 years. Nothing beats Burnley's celebrations for getting back to the Premier League, they had Natasha Bedingfield on hand to sing the unofficial promotion anthem for them "Unwritten". She sang it for the fans at Turf Moor and the squad sang it with her in the locker room.Playoffs are set in Mexico and Argentina, they'll start next weekend. Champions League in Europe returns this week with Barcelona and Inter hopeful on injury returns while PSG and Arsenal try to shake off league losses over the weekend.More Espresso Tuesday on the SDH Network, presented by Oglethorpe University.

We're back with another packed AFTN Soccer Show. When we say it's a bumper episode we mean it, and there's something for everyone as we chat Vancouver Whitecaps, Major League Soccer, Leagues Cup, Vancouver FC, Canadian Premier League, League1 BC, and the women's World Cup. We kick things off with the Whitecaps as we look back at their exciting and ultimately heartbreaking Leagues Cup loss to Mexican side Club Leon in a penalty shootout on Friday night. It was a great game on the pitch and a fantastic atmosphere off it. We also chat with 'Caps coach Vanni Sartini to get his thoughts on both the new tournament and the MLS All-Star game. The other big Whitecaps news this week was the departure of Julian Gressel. We break down the trade to Columbus Crew and chat with Vancouver's Sporting Director and GM Axel Schuster about the transfer and what's next. One man tipped to move into the Gressel-shaped hole in the side is Ali Ahmed and in our feature interview this episode we catch up with Ali to chat about a whirlwind year that's seen him sign a MLS deal, score his first Whitecaps goal, break into the national team, and that scare incident in the Pacific FC game. We also look at the dramatic end of the regular League1 BC season, chat with TSS Rovers women's head coach Chelsey Hannesson after her side book their place in the playoffs, and talk to Victoria Highlanders head coach Steve Simonson after his side topped the regular season standings and booked their place in next year's Canadian Championship. All of that plus Vancouver's FC's latest loss, the new signing mechanism for young players in the CPL, and look at the early games in the 2023 women's World Cup in Australia and New Zealand and the battle ahead for Canada to get out of their group. Apasionante y controversial episodio donde Pablo y Gastón hablan de la final perdida con Club Leon.
Episode 255 may be the toughest one yet here on Defenders of the Banc. No match was more important in our club's history than this second leg of the 2023 CCL Final against Leon. We had them at home, at BMO, at a place we've staunchly defended for 6 years. We needed just one goal to level things and take control of the series. And we had Denis Bouanga, Carlos Vela, a healthy Kellyn Acosta, an un-suspended Jesus Murillo, and... wait... is that Giorgio Chiellini?! It is!However, despite the talent, the desire, and maybe the best support The 3252 have ever provided, we didn't have the goals. LAFC failed to find the back of the net in leg 2, falling 1-0 and 3-1 on aggregate. Club Leon is the 2023 CCL Champions. On this episode, we try to help you navigate through the hurt and the grief. We ask questions of Steve and Cifu, throw praise at McCarthy and Denis, and wonder what could have been. Walk with us on the journey that is Episode 255, and know that the next one is just around the corner!
Did we win? I wasn't watching. Welp, that was the post-game show none of us wanted to do. We analyze why we lost, how we feel, and what it means for us moving forward. And we even end on a high note. After Tuesday's 3-0 victory over Club Leon at the Banc, Los Angeles Football Club advanced to the quarterfinals of the 2020 CONCACAF Champions League. Read that again, because it still feels surreal to type. The CONCACAF comeback, fueled by late goals from Carlos Vela and Diego Rossi, was one of the most important results in club history. Not even a loss to Inter Miami in the Major League Soccer season opener would have dampened the vibe around the team coming off such a momentous match on the international stage. Unfortunately for Rodolfo Pizarro, Lee Nguyen, David Beckham and the rest of Inter Miami, Carlos Vela (happy belated birthday from the Season Pass family to the captain!) had enough magic in his left foot to guide LAFC to a second win in four days and one of the best weeks ever for the black and gold universe. Next for LAFC will be the second league match of the season against the Philadelphia Union. The club will host Cruz Azul to begin the CONCACAF Champions League quarterfinal just four days later, so Bob Bradley & co. have to begin thinking about how to navigate a busy beginning to the 2020 season. Ft. Some very special guests**** We break down some of our initial thoughts on the lafc vs. Club Leon leg 2 game in the CCL.
After Tuesday's 2-0 defeat to Club Leon deep in the heart of Mexico, Los Angeles Football Club has a lot of work to do if it wants to move onto the quarterfinals of the 2020 CONCACAF Champions League. Leon didn't completely overwhelm LAFC in the first leg of this round-of-sixteen match up. However, the Liga MX club beat the black and gold at its own game. Leon stayed on the attack from start to finish and if the home team was more clinical with its own chances, LAFC would be returning to the Banc in an ever larger hole. Conversely, LAFC squandered all of its chances, some very good, to grab a road goal out of Estadio Leon. Leon scored two goals in the first leg, both coming on bad moments from LAFC outside backs. In the 21st minute, right back Tristan Blackmon slipped in the box, giving Jean Meneses a clean shot at goal. Seconds from the end regulation, Angel Mena beat Mohamed El-Munir and scored Leon's second. If LAFC are going to climb out of this hole and win the round, it'll take one of the best performances in club history to do it. Time will tell if the black and gold are up to the task, but one factor inevitably on LAFC's side: 22,000+ fans and supporters will pack the Banc on Thursday, Feb. 27th to cheer on the comeback. Ryan Wallerson of the Los Angeles Daily News and Writer at Large (he said small, but we all know Dweezy is anything but) Alex Dwyer are once again joined by Tigers Supporter Group member and youth soccer coach Pierce Maher to talk about the first leg, preview the second, and also look forward to the Major League Soccer season opener against Inter Miami just three days later.
