Do you ...want to become an online community manager?want to start an online community, but you’re not sure where to begin?already have an online community that just isn’t working the way you want it to?If you said yes to any of the above questions, you’re not alone. As more businesses move online, the need for people with good community management skills is growing. And although, community management as a defined role for bricks and mortar-type businesses has been around for awhile, online community management is a different kettle of fish.Never before has there been such a need for people with good community management skills. And the demand for those skills will continue to grow into the foreseeable future, thanks to the coronavirus. So what does it take to be a successful community manager? In Part 1 of this 2-part podcast episode, Trudy speaks with Jillian Benbow about her journey of becoming a community management expert.Jillian is the community manager for Pat Flynn’s Smart Passive Income community, SPI Pro. She also talks about how it’s not a black and white world and the importance of boundaries, empathy and patience - all at the same time. What a balance!
“This job helped me understand why people gather. And the problems they’re trying to solve when they gather.” —Shannon Paris
As community professionals, the array of platforms, reading material, conferences, and thought leaders available to us only continues to grow. And if you’ve read or written a job description for a community opportunity recently, you know that there’s often an expectation around technical literacy for everyone in the field. In a time when a lot of our day-to-day takes place in front of a screen, I felt a little punch in the gut while listening to this episode of Community Signal, when I learned that John Coate, an early community manager, had no knowledge of the tools available when he first started at The WELL. In fact, he says that his first day on the job was the first day that he sat down in front of a computer! So, why was I surprised? Has our industry placed too much influence on speaking engagements, platform knowledge, and revenue-focused metrics instead of the values and actual community-related experience that should govern our work? As John puts it, “computers are just a way to connect people. Never forget that you’re talking to real people, and it’s good to treat them as if you really are in the same room with them.” Sounds simple, but imagine if platforms like Facebook or Twitter followed this golden rule. We’d have a much different internet today. Patrick and John discuss this exact point and the work that John is doing to get us there. Because not surprisingly, the values that guided his work at The WELL 35 years ago are the same ones we need to call upon today. John and Patrick also talk about: How tools like Facebook and Twitter have changed the way that we communicate with one another John’s transition from auto mechanic to online community manager The movement to decentralize the internet Metrics based on relationships, sentiment, and factual statements within the community Our Podcast is Made Possible By… If you enjoy our show, please know that it’s only possible with the generous support of our sponsor: Discourse. Big Quotes The “online gift economy” that The WELL helped create (8:14): “The WELL, because of its open nature and its desire to experiment, opened up chunks of the operating system for programmers to actually play with and make little utilities for the people as a way of kind of practicing. There was this maker culture going on at the same time. As Howard Rheingold put it once, it was where the tool makers meet with the tool users. In addition to being a place where people can converse, it was also a kind of birthplace of a sort of online gift economy.” -John Coate Is web rage the new road rage? (15:15): “Just the other day, I was thinking that in a way, [web rage is] not too unlike road rage, where you can yell at somebody in the car that cut you off … knowing that it’s almost certain they’re not going to stop and make you get out of your car and work it out with them physically. It’s safe. … [Online], it is kind of a power spot that you’re sitting in. This becomes part of your identity and you’re confident and you say things and some people can too easily go about that in an ill-considered way, forgetting that if you were face-to-face with somebody in the same room, you would factor that into however you talk to them.” -John Coate Don’t forget, there are still people new to online gatherings (16:35): “Amazingly enough, there are a lot of people who are still kind of new to online gatherings where groups try to come together in one form or another. The main thing is to remind people that the computers are just a way to connect people. Never forget that you’re talking to real people and it’s good to treat them as if you really are in the same room with them and you’re talking directly to them and do the best you can to sort of simulate mentally some feeling of that if you can pull it off, which is not exactly that simple. I think it takes practice but I think it’s easy enough to imagine, even if you haven’t really done it that much. It did take me a while to learn it frankly.” -John Coate On creating your own online experience (25:50): “I think it should never be forgotten by anybody that even though the internet is dominated by Facebook, Amazon, all the big guys, all the big organizations, that doesn’t have to dominate your experience. You can still find, I think, almost anything you want out there if you look for it long enough and far enough or if somebody turns you on to something.” – John Coate About John Coate John Coate started in online community work at the beginning of 1986 at The WELL in Sausalito, California. As marketing director, he focused on the user base developing relationships with each other as the basis of the community. In 1994, he co-founded sfgate.com. As general manager until 2001, he and his team pioneered a number of innovations, many of which are now standard features on most news websites. He also spent time at gaming company Sulake and worked as an in-game adult supervisor in their avatar-based world of Habbo Hotels. Since 2015, Mr. Coate has been working with Edgeryders, teaching online community creation and management of workshops and managing portions of European Commission funded projects around the future of the internet and the rise of populism in Europe. In particular, he hosts and manages the Edgeryders forum, Internet of Humans, as part of the larger next-generation internet initiative known as NGI Forward. Another project, The Reef, studies a deep green co-housing and co-working space. Edgeryders is an organization and community that acts as a talent pool for social benefit projects. They also work with the Swedish group that operates a large co-working creative space on the waterfront in Stockholm called Blivande. Serena Snoad is today's guest, she is the Online Community Manager at Alzheimer's Society. She has been a community professional for 11 years and she helps run the CMX Connect Chapter in London!. Serena shares how she runs a huge community team, gets budget, creates scalable systems and tells a heartwarming story about a woman with Alzheimer's finding a support network.Too Long; Didn't ListenWe discussed how to get stakeholders to fully buy into your community program, Serena mentioned the key is mutual benefit. You can go to different stakeholders, get an idea of what their needs are and leverage your community to help achieve that goal. And Serena shared the example of getting stories from the community to give to the marketing communications and policy teams at Alzheimer's Society. In regards to budgeting, Serena pointed out that anyone who thinks that a community should be free is wrong and that's a red flag if you hear that from leadership. If you are in that scenario she suggested to find and articulate how your community is providing value to the organization and practice empathy to figure out what really drives them and speak their language to help them see the benefits of community.Alzheimer's Society puts out a survey every year and they decided to ask if people want to share their story and 38% of respondents shared their story. Serena mentioned the heartwarming story of a woman who didn't have many family or friends and was diagnosed via a paper instead of the doctor telling her in person. She found Alzheimer's Society and thankfully found the support of people in her area who not only helped her but became her friends which dramatically helped her situation.

How to Be a Social Media ManagerA social media manager is someone who helps maintain other brands, personalities, and businesses maintain a presence on social platforms such as: Facebook Instagram Pinterest Twitter LinkedIn Snapchat Smaller industry-related networking platforms if needed Don't worry though because if you don't have to personally manage all those if you don't want to. Some freelance marketers will manage everything for clients, and others just focus on 1-3 platforms they enjoy the most. Some of the responsibilities of a social media manager include:Posting brand/business-related content Responding to questions and comments Curating related industry posts (like articles, photos, or content relevant to the industry) Sharing content from other pages Monitoring engagement on any given social platform Initiating conversations on pages or private groups (i.e., Facebook Groups) Moderating and banning community behavior as issues amongst members crop up Graphic design on Canva, image editing skills, or photoshop (this is an optional skill but gives you a huge advantage since many people are looking for one person to fill many roles) “Think of yourself as the host of the community, you want to foster good conversation and engagement while keeping the riff-raff out!” ~ iCreateDaily.comWe recommend you start offering services on the one platform you use the most and you can always expand from there. Our host, Sarah Kocianski is joined by four great guests: Leda Glyptis, Chief of Staff at 11:FS, Joy Macknight, Deputy Editor at the Banker, Helene Panzarino, MD at Rainmaking Colab and Angelique Schouten, Global Board Member at Ohpen to talk about all the latest news in fintech. Including: First up, ING’s money laundering fine. Dutch bank ING admitted criminals had been able to launder money through its accounts and agreed to pay €775 million ($900 million) to settle the case. Dutch financial crime prosecutors said ING had violated laws on preventing money laundering and financing terrorism "structurally and for years" by not properly vetting the beneficial owners of client accounts and by not noticing unusual transactions through them. Half a billion stolen from UK banking customers in H1 2018. Industry group UK Finance said £145m of that was due to authorised push payment (APP) scams, in which people are conned into sending money to another account. But £358m was lost to unauthorised fraud, which includes transactions made without account holders' knowledge. Funding Circle’s IPO. Funding Circle has set a price range for its initial public offering (IPO) of 440 pence to 460 pence per share. The flotation will value the firm up to around £1.5 billion. The peer-to-peer lender said it intends to raise £300 million from the IPO. We have a brief comment from Funding Options Managing Director, Ryan Edwards-Pritchard to find out more. Funding Options’ funding. ING Ventures, the fintech venture capital arm of the Netherlands-based global bank, has taken a £5m minority equity stake in Funding Options. This follows the recent announcement that they're partnering with ING in the Netherlands to help Dutch businesses find the right finance for their situation. Monzo’s Million Customers. Tom Blomfield, said the "milestone shows that there’s real, mainstream appetite for a bank that’s doing things differently". Monzo now accounts for 15% of all new current account openings in the UK. Monzo customers now spend £12,000 on their cards every minute, the firm said, with £4bn in payments made so far. Monzo's "unicorn" valuation, of more than $1bn (£770m), is expected to be confirmed when it closes its latest round of fundraising, more than four times higher than its valuation less than a year ago. We have a great comment from Richard Cook, Monzo's Online Community Manager to get a bit of insight into how they reached their milestone. Cleo picks up $10M in series A fundraise. Cleo, the London-based “digital assistant” that wants to replace your banking apps. “Broke into” the US 6 months ago, and now has 350k US users, and 600k in the UK. Adding 30k new users per week. Big London VCs are already invested, including funders of Skype, Wonga and Transferwise and its latest investor is Balderton Capital. Open Banking, the US is behind the times. In the United States currently, there’s no legal requirement stipulating a financial institution must make a consumer’s financial data available to a third party in the event that a consumer provides affirmative consent. Goldman Sachs wants your piggy bank. Goldman Sachs’s US savings bank, Marcus comes to the UK, US savings bank, which was set up two years ago, has been a big success, attracting $20bn (£15bn) of savings. They have also applied for a banking licence in Lithuania, partly to avoid Brexit disruption. HSBC tells Welsh singer to send letter in English. Singer Geraint Lovgreen has complained to the Welsh Language Commissioner after HSBC told him they could not respond to his letter because it was written in Welsh. The bank said they could not reply to him because it was written "in a foreign language" and he was asked to "resend your message in English". HSBC, which describes itself as "the world's local bank", insisted it worked hard to provide Welsh language services for its customers and it also worked "closely" with the Welsh Language Commissioner. Brear, Sam Maule and Simon Taylor are joined by two great guests: Ahmed Zaidi CTO at Catalyst AI and Kathryn Harris Innovation Lead at Lloyds Banking Group, to talk about all the latest news in fintech. Including: Starling closes their community. Citing several factors for the move, such as lack of use by most customers, the forum being a distraction for the company from core focus and a vocal minority misunderstanding its purpose. Starling’s post also made reference to banking being a highly regulated environment and forum interaction being restricted by that due to ‘tipping off’ rules. Starling says they remain committed to open conversation with customers and the wider fintech community through other channels such as social media, blog and monthly newsletter. We have a couple of great interviews with Sophie Guibaud, Managing Director for Europe at Fidor and Richard Cook, Online Community Manager from Monzo to get an insight into what communities have provided there. Digitised sexism. It turns out that women entrepreneurs who seek to finance their ventures using bank financing are increasingly forced to find solutions elsewhere. And compared to men, women entrepreneurs are pushed into desperate and extreme types of financing. State of concern. New York state’s top banking regulator on Friday sued the federal government to void its decision to award national bank charters to online lenders and payment companies. Maria Vullo, superintendent of New York’s Department of Financial Services, called the decision by the OCC to let financial technology companies, or fintech firms, obtain charters “lawless, ill-conceived, and destabilizing of financial markets.” The fintech hub to watch. Alipay and China UMS to set up EU hub in Luxembourg. At the end of a week-long mission led by Minister of Finance Pierre Gramegna to Beijing, Hangzhou and Shanghai, China’s Ant Financial confirmed the decision of its payment arm – Alipay - to set up its EU hub in Luxembourg. The announcement comes after China UMS, another major Chinese Fintech company, also announced its choice of Luxembourg. During the visit, several cooperation agreements have been signed. Arizona hits London on a mission to woo UK fintechs. Doug Ducey, the Governor of Arizona, hopes Britain’s best Fintechs can be persuaded to look beyond Silicon Valley when expanding into the US for the first time. Arizona is pitching to British fintechs in the UK this week, offering regulation-free access to the US market and promises of help with office space and talent. South African fintech JUMO to expand in Asia with Goldman Sachs backing. South Africa-based financial technology firm JUMO plans to expand in high-growth Asian markets after securing the backing of Goldman Sachs. Since 2014, JUMO, which provides credit and savings products to customers and SMBs through mobile, has mainly focused on Africa where the adoption of mobile money has transformed the banking landscape. We have a great interview with 11:FS' own Lesley-Ann Vaughan to get some deeper insight. Abu Dhabi opens digital sandbox. Abu Dhabi Global Markets (ADGM), the emirate's international financial centre, has further underlined its fintech ambitions with the launch of a digital sandbox. The sandbox is designed to offer banks, fintechs and regulators an open digital marketplace in which to collaborate on the creation, testing and adoption of new products. Mary Meeker, the legendary internet analyst is leaving Kleiner. Meeker’s by far the most senior woman in VC. The departure is rooted in different visions for the types of deals they would like to do. But like so many disputes in recent years at Kleiner Perkins, according to those familiar with the situation, there was also persistent friction between the two sides in ways that had little to do with the firm’s core business — over mundane things such as whether to host a holiday party in San Francisco or closer to Sand Hill Road in Silicon Valley. And finally, the 'first' pub in the UK has gone cashless...and it's near Ipswich. All this and so much more on today's episode of Fintech Insider!
