Generally associated with postbellum regionalism, mutinous heroines feigning New England propriety, and consumable literature for the urban elites, recent re-readings of Mary Eleanor Wilkins Freeman's fiction have uncovered its nuanced, surreptitious, and explosive quality. Much of this disquiet is concentrated in the bodies of barely domesticated animals. Contributors to this episode – Elena Furlanetto (host, University of Duisburg-Essen), Cécile Roudeau (Université Paris Cité), Emma Thiébaut (Université Paris Cité), and Emily Coccia (Carleton College) – propose to take a deeper look at parrots, cats, dogs, squirrels, and monkeys in Understudies (1901), a collection of short stories about New England's nonhuman nature, and other works by the same author. In Wilkins Freeman's animals, anthropomorphic and sentimentalist guidelines for animal representation which inform much 19th-century animal fiction burst at the seams to reveal creatures of ambiguity who disturb the quiet of New England living rooms, demonstrate the potential of cages not quite shut, and tread the unstable borders between garden and wilderness. The voices in this podcast follow Stephanie Palmer's encouragement to “listen to the ambivalences” of Wilkins Freeman's fiction and treat animals as a productive site of confluence for different foci: from animal studies to queer and feminist ecologies, Indigenous studies, and ambiguity studies among others. The interview with Jim Palmer was recorded (length: 51 minutes) on May 23, with the Ringr app. During our conversation, we talk about Jim's new book, Just Say Yes, his coaching business, and the new floating home. You could say it is a small world when you find out that Jessica Rhodes of InterviewConnections.com, is Jim's daughter. Her colleague, Sue Morton (expert podcast matchmaker, client happiness), reached out to me through the service called PodcastGuests.com. After my personal assistant of X.ai, Amy Ingram (powered by artificial intelligence), got confused about the scheduling of the interview, Jim's wife, Stephanie Palmer, picked up the conversation thread and coordinated the booking. Another tidbit: After the interview, I connected with Jim on LinkedIn and saw that he had studied at the same university (Southern New Hampshire University) as yours truly. I’m super excited to share a recording from 2016 quilt market with you today. I teamed up with Christa Watson from Christaquilts.com and Stephanie Palmer from QuiltingPlanner.com to talk about writing and publishing books for quilters. Now I’ve known Christa for a few years and we met online first and collaborated a bit. I remember Christa emailing me for help on a few magazine articles she was writing, then we met in person at a spring quilt market a few years ago and really hit it off. And Christa has launched her quilting business into the big time in the last few years. She’s written two books, and is working on her third, she sells precuts in The Precut Store on Amazon, and I believe she has a Craftsy class in the works as well so definitely lots of stuff going on for Christa. Christa actually introduced me to Stephanie Palmer just before quilt market and again, this was just such a serendipitous moment where we could have done the schoolhouse presentation with just the two of us, but adding Stephanie was just perfect because she added a totally different perspective of publishing to the mix. She has created The Quilting Planner which is in i’s second year and she gave me a copy and I honestly don’t think I’ll ever be able to live without them from now on! It’s far more than just a date book – it has graph paper and space to plan quilts and it includes some quilting projects too so I think all quilters should have. So this was a live interview at fall Quilt Market 2016 which is basically an industry trade show. This is where manufacturers and business owners meet with quilt shop owners, designers show off their new lines of fabric, and where a lot of networking and learning goes on every year. My inspiration for creating this schoolhouse presentation was to share my love of writing and self publishing with more quilters. There are a lot of choices and a lot of ways to publish your books these days and I hope it will inspire you to think outside the box with your quilting books.

Sarah O’Kelly talks to Stephanie Palmer from Coral Springs Parkland Fire Department. Stephanie is Battalion Chief of the Training Division and – perhaps of most interest to Boat Radio listeners – Dive Team Commander. Born and raised in Indiana, Stephanie did not dive as a kid but she moved to Florida from Indianapolis in 1997 and joined the dive team a few years later. She’s a search and rescue diver, and most of her work takes place in Florida’s lakes and canals. Every one of her 300 dives has been in ‘dark, black nasty water’ and she works with her eyes closed. Oh, and she encounters ‘gators – in the dark – plus aggressive, venomous snakes like the water moccasin or cottonmouth viper, which has a potentially fatal bite. You think you’re tough?
