With 30 years in IT and cybersecurity—and over 300,000 copies sold of the Visible Ops Handbook—Scott shares why AI security isn't just an IT issue… it's a board-level responsibility. We talk about the hidden dangers of uploading confidential information into AI tools, the human errors behind major breaches like the MGM Resorts International cyberattack, and why companies must stop treating cybersecurity as a cost center. Instead, it needs to be seen for what it truly is: revenue assurance and business survival. If you think your organization is “too small” to be targeted, you'll want to press play on this one.

Each episode features Chapman students who have completed a Podcasting course through the Center for Creative and Cultural Industries at the university. Students who had no podcasting experience or technical ability in the genre before taking the course were able to contribute all the segments to Catalyst this season with the goal being that they will take this ‘hands-on' experience and carry it over to the launching of their very own series. Each episode of Season 12 will feature one to two different interviews conducted by CCI students, exploring different aspects of the Creative and Cultural Industries. As we begin to wind down the season, we start today's episode with an intriguing interview featuring Montana Golin. Montana is the events producer at Dodge College of Film and Media Arts at Chapman University and she speaks with Iliana Nordenso about her career trajectory, starting with her education at Southern Methodist University in Texas. The pair examine the world of event management including Montana's various experiences as a general event planner with non-entertainment events such as weddings, corporate events, and ceremonies. They also discuss the path to her current position, and what the day-to-day looks like as an events producer. Montana elaborates on some of her accomplishments that she feels most proud of, and they conclude by revealing some interesting misconceptions about event planning and what Montana wishes aspiring event planners knew about events. Our second episode of the week delves into the world of Las Vegas, and what it is like to be the Public Relations Coordinator for one of the most world-renowned Casino/Resorts on the famous Vegas Strip. Sammy Baloch sits down with Chapman University Alumna, Haley Ben Moshe'22, to talk about her role in PR with MGM Resorts International. Moshe lays out what her journey has been since graduation, touching on the atmosphere and culture of work in the area of content creation / Influencing in Los Angeles, and how that experience guided her to make a move back to Nevada, where she has found a better fit with MGM. They talk about the details and responsibilities that she faces in the position, and what she finds to be her favorite parts of the job. Before signing off, Moshe reflects on what she has found to be the most rewarding aspects of her career journey thus far, and shares with Baloch some personal advice for current students or recent grads that are just starting their own journeys.

This episode was motivated by the major cyber attack that brought MGM Resorts International's operations to a screeching halt. It was a social engineering attack where the attackers gained super administrator privileges by providing the MGM Help Desk with basic employee information.Action Items and Discussion Highlights"Bypassing the human verification is something super critical we need to address. It's something we can't afford to wait on, and it's low-hanging fruit."Implement a driver's license validation solution to authenticate callers to the IT help desk.Explore expanding the use of identity verification technologies beyond the IT help desk, such as for wire transfers and other high-risk financial transactions.Adopt a layered approach to establishing a robust defense. "You need a good tech stack, user entity behavior analytics, conditional access policies, MFA, and security awareness training." Educate IT support staff on identifying potential social engineering attempts, even when the caller appears to be using advanced techniques like voice cloning.Implement a policy instructing employees to hang up and call back when they receive requests for sensitive information or transactions.Stay vigilant and continue to explore new solutions to combat the evolving threat of social engineering attacks.Time Stamps00:02 -- Introduction02:45 -- Mike Manrod's professional highlights03:38 -- Ori Eisen's professional highlights06:36 -- Why is Mike Manrod so passionate about this discussion topic?08:45 -- Breaching MFA13:25 -- Securing the Organization from Human Vulnerabilities17:57 -- Defense-in-Depth and People-Process-Technology19:44 -- Technology underlying authentication22:40 -- Seamless adoption of authentication technology26:15 -- Evolution of authentication technologies30:02 -- What advice would you have for practitioners like you who are on the fence about investing in such technologies?31:10 -- Closing ThoughtsMemorable Mike Manrod Quotes/Statements"Multifactor authentication (MFA) carried us a long way, but now that it's everywhere, it naturally creates a cyber evolutionary force, driving adversaries to have to solve it.""I think the future is that of a layered approach. In a way, they co-created this podcast, helping Jim find those initial footsteps and directing the show to what it has become today. First up is Lili Tomovich, the CMO & Experience Officer at Barclays Bank. Jim had Lili as his third guest on the show in 2019, when she worked as the Chief Experience & Marketing Officer at MGM Resorts International, a $15 billion global hospitality and entertainment company. Her career path has included ten years at Mastercard as head of Marketing for Canada and Senior Vice President of Consumer Marketing for the US market. After time within the hospitality space, she returned to financial services and joined Barclays in 2021. She created and accelerated transformational growth for the bank, while reimagining the customer experience. Jim's next returning guest, Dean Aragón has come on the podcast a few times over the years; he was the 10th guest back in 2019, and later joined Jim for a roundtable discussion at Cannes in 2022. Dean is also celebrating an anniversary. He has worked at Shell for a decade, serving as the Group Brand Officer and CEO & Vice-Chairman of Shell Brands International–or, as he puts it, Shell's "Chief Brand Guy." Prior to Shell, Dean spent 15 years in Senior Brand Marketing roles at Unilever, across a range of categories and markets. For this episode's final conversation, Jim comes full circle to welcome back his very first guest, Kristin Lemkau. Kristin is The Chief Executive Officer of J.P. Efraín Pérez Agosto began his career on the lively casino floors of Puerto Rico, where his fascination with the gaming industry was first sparked. Starting with a succession of jobs, he quickly showcased his analytical prowess and passion for finance. In search of broader horizons, Agosto relocated to the U.S. when his casino owner set down roots in Indiana. This move marked a pivotal chapter in his career, as he balanced work while completing his undergraduate degree stateside before going on to pursue an MBA. The Indiana operation offered Agosto invaluable experience in the American gaming market. His ability to dissect complex data and drive strategic initiatives began to set him apart. During this period, Agosto tells us, his pursuit of an MBA expanded his strategic thinking and prepared him for more significant challenges ahead. Upon graduating, Agosto joined Caesars Entertainment, where he soon found himself on a fast track to becoming a casino controller. After 4 years with Caesars, it was then on to MGM Resorts International, which was seeking to field a finance team for its new National Harbor resort in Maryland. Agosto headed east, where over the next 5 years he steadily advanced up MGM's finance ladder. Eventually having beefed up his FP&A resume, he subsequently landed inside the National Harbor's CFO office. Although his leadership there was notably tested by both the COVID-19 pandemic and a significant cyberattack, his proactive and resilient approach was able to help to safeguard the business. Today, Agosto focuses on driving growth initiatives and navigating labor market challenges, positioning him as a transformative finance leader in the gaming industry.
