Click the post for details on this episode! Welcome back to Open House. Randy Seidman here, fresh off a month-long tour that took me from North America to Asia to Europe and back. One of my favorite stops was on the island of Koh Phangan in Thailand, where I returned to the mighty Jungle Experience. This time I brought along San Francisco legend, Syd Gris, the man behind Burning Man's biggest stage, Opulent Temple. So today's episode features a portion of both of our sets, starting with mine. Seven thousand lovely souls danced to our beats laced with live percussion. The mixer got hot from time to time, which you might hear, and I suppose that mirrored the heavy fire-play, coupled with the dragon's steamy mouth from within which we roared. Coming up at the end of May, I'm at Church Nightclub in Denver and 45East in Portland, hope to see you on the dance floor. Up next is another artist whose mix was recorded that same night. Widely regarded as one of the hardest working people in the scene, a San Francisco legend, and the man behind one of Burning Man's biggest and longest running stages, Opulent Temple - where he has consistently booked (and played with) the likes of Carl Cox, Above and Beyond, Gabriel and Dresden, Gorgon City, Diplo and more. My next guest is Syd Gris. He is one of the longest-running fun creators in the Bay Area music and underground arts scene, Syd is known as a Renaissance man of the West Coast burner scene, and with good reason. Not only is he the co-founder (in 2003) of the legendary Opulent Temple collective (best known for their premiere sound stage at Burning Man), he is also the founder of Opel Productions, (2002) which has been consistently throwing club events and parties with purpose in San Francisco for 20 years. Today is a rare episode because we have the cofounder of Big Imagination, Ken Feldman, joining us. The Big Imagination Foundation is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization that aims to incubate bold, visionary projects that inspire the world to dream big. As their 747 Project for Burning Man proves, their artistic pursuits are literally and figuratively larger-than-life and out of the box and to accomplish these groundbreaking projects, they rely on radical collaboration and community support while also providing opportunities for education and participation. On today’s show, Ken answers all the questions we have about this magnificent creation, including how he came up with the idea, how hundreds of people collaborated to make it happen, what the experience is like for Burning Man visitors and why it entails so much more than self-expression on a grand scale. We also talk more generally about the misconceptions about Burning Man and why this event is really about community and celebrating the diversity of art. We get into the details of how and where they managed to acquire the plane, how they went about taking it apart and reassembling it and what the future has in store for him personally and for The 747 Project. This is undoubtedly a spectacular episode, so be sure to join us! Key Points from This Episode: Ken’s first Burning Man project and how it led to him and Jon becoming friends and partners. How Ken came up with the concept of turning a 747 into a giant art car. Building the Charlie the Unicorn car with very little resources and why it was so successful. How their 747 project was a team effort for with over 1000 volunteers. Burning Man as a great art experiment that engages with the question of what art is. The significance of the size of the 747 and why it appealed to the imaginations of people. What getting into the plane looks like and the emotional experience visitors go through. A true story of how building a pink unicorn saved a guy’s life. A few interesting analogies for describing Burning Man to someone who hasn’t been. Some of the criticisms against Burning Man; lack of racial diversity and the high cost. How Black Rock City started as a joke that got massively out of control. Acquiring the plane from a bone yard and how Boeing responded to the project. How Ken’s background in airspace and his love for building things culminated in this project. The new plans in store for The 747 Project and how it is going to reach millions of people. The complicated process of taking apart and reassembling the 747 and moving it 500 miles. A hopeful projection of Ken’s next couple of months following the 747 Project. When Ken would consider being part of another project of this scope. A vision for honoring The 747 Project by making a film documentary about it. And much more! I’m pleased to deliver Episode 12 of my Lowering The Tone podcast- 2.5 hours of underground music and chat. This time round, I caught up with one of the most switched on people I know who is also a good friend, Syd Gris. A major player on the west coast of America, he is not just a Dj but a promoter and a key person within Opulent Temple (one of the biggest and most respected sound camps at Burning Man). In this interview he gives us a rare insight into the inner workings and how he has endured 15 years plus, of DJing and throwing parties. I hope you enjoy the show, and feedback is greatly appreciated, if you can share the link it would be a massive help. Making his RIPEcast debut this week is our pal, Dex Stakker, with one of his signature dirty electro mixes. Enjoy. Dex Stakker is an electro-house, electro and breakbeat DJ based in San Francisco. Formerly a longtime resident of festival-in-the-desert stalwart, Opulent Temple, and the popular SF-based production company Opel Productions, Dex has played countless venues all over Northern California. Dex recently joined newcomer Apex, artist-driven event production group and their first concern is to take that aforementioned festival experience to the next level (or maybe a couple of levels). "It's definitely been a transitional time for me. This mix was done as if someone stuck a gun to my head, and said: "You have 60 minutes to live. Rock the floor. Don't hold back." To which I would say: "Can you back that gun away from my ear a little, so I can get my headphones on?" - Dex For more information on Dex visit: www.facebook.com/dexstakker www.facebook.com/dexstakkerfans www.soundcloud.com/dexstakker Artwork by www.jempanufnik.com

This week The Space Cowboys are pleased to welcome to the RIPEcast DJ Wolfie of the Pantheon crew in Los Angeles. DJ Wolfie connects deeply with the dancers, and is known for exciting peak hour sets. Each Live set is backed by hours of rehearsal and prep work in the studio, custom tailoring the latest sounds to keep the evenings experience fresh and new.
