Watch the video podcast here. A Bit About Hugh Hugh is a cartoonist, creative director and co-founder of Gapingvoid, a company that transforms business through art. He is intensely interested in what makes people tick and combines that with what they do for a living. Our work is such a huge part of our lives and so this is why his artistic focus is on the work environment, instead of making art for people’s homes or other places. And he’s been hugely successful in doing so. Hugh is also the author of the book Ignore Everybody and 39 Other Keys to Creativity. Career In 1995, Hugh was a struggling artist in London. It was the early days of the Internet and the very pioneer days of blogging. As a struggling artist, he realised that blogging was a tool that could help him earn a living by reaching people directly with his work. Blogging gave him a powerful medium to reach his audience and has been a huge part of his journey. Hugh now makes motivational art. He believes passionately that the right location, the right office, the right layout, and the right décor can be incredibly powerful. And art is really the key. Art disrupts and drives behaviour because it bundles together our primary drivers as human beings: love, hate, fear, beauty and sadness. Getting Clients Hugh explains that his business grew organically because he had fans inside businesses and they would buy a piece of his art that inspired them and then others would ask where they got it. He realised that art could really motivate people in the workplace. Hugh also says that it is important to find the customers that your competition doesn’t want. They weren’t interested in the customers with the biggest budget, they wanted the companies with the biggest problems. His advice is to go after a niche nobody else has thought of. "Too many people are trying to sell the same stuff to the same people." Gapingvoid had unique offerings so they didn’t have to compete on price. Hugh says that if you’re competing on price then you’re not differentiating your offers enough. Hugh's Hot Tips Know when to say no Be clear about what you want when writing proposals then the easier it is to write In order to keep your projects on track, you have to be vigilant and realistic when setting deadlines. Build in time for unforeseen events and constantly communicate with clients There's so much more in this episode, so be sure to listen in and let us know what you think in the comments below!

Sandra Busby is a still life artist who paints in a contemporary style using traditional methods.  Inspired by the ordinary, she strives to capture the playful light in glass and other still life with her paints. Feeling stifled by the modern way of teaching, Sandra turned her back on art school, shut herself away and studied the traditional methods of painting. Her work has since been published multiple times, she won her first award in 2016 and her paintings can now be found hanging in private collections around the world. Full shownotes: http://yourcreativepush.com/sandrabusby In this episode, Sandra discusses: -Her creative history, including a long gap in drawing and painting. -The idea of not drawing in your sketchbook because you are afraid of spoiling the pages. -How 100 pages of doodles or bad drawings is much better than 100 blank pages. -How she is able to “scratch her creative itch” before she starts her work day, and how productive that time ends up being. -Finding a slot of time that works best for when you are most creative. -How starting is often the hardest thing to do, but once you do, how fast and smoothly things can go. -The idea of having a white board or something similar to write down all of the ideas that come into your head so that they are in plain view. -Her experience at art school and what led her to decide that art college was not for her. -How she eventually developed her style by ignoring everybody else. -Some of the resistances that she faces on a daily basis, including self doubt, procrastination, and guilt. -How difficult it can be to get to your creative passion when you are in love with your partner and just want to spend time with them. -How to strike a balance between the love for your family and the love for your art. -“The Skanky Teenage Stage” of a painting and how to get through it. -The power in approaching your art with the simple intention of making it just a little bit better. -Some of the people that she draws inspiration from, such as Danny Gregory, other bloggers, and her Uncle Danny. Sandra's Final Push will remind you that in order to become good at something, you have to be willing to be bad at it first.   Quotes: “Trying to write a novel with one child attached to your leg and the other attached to your boob is quite distracting.  It was never going to work.” “It was six months before I opened that sketchbook because I was absolutely terrified to spoil the pages.” “It made me realize that I could paint the world however I wanted to paint it.” “You don’t have to show anyone.  If you’re that worried, get a ring binder.  You can pull the pages out.” “You do need to forget about perfection and the end result.  You’ve got to just make marks and see where it takes you.” “I thought that to be a real artist, you must have this piece of paper to tell you that.” “Procrastination is a great way of avoiding failure, isn’t it?” “To be good at something, the first thing you’ve got to be willing to do is be bad at it.” Links mentioned: What Beginner Artists Need to Know about Painting [From Sandra's blog] The Six Secret Stages of Painting [From Sandra's blog] "Pep Talk" by Danny Gregory [Vimeo] Danny Gregory interview on Your Creative Push Ignore Everybody: and 39 Other Keys to Creativity by Hugh Macleod SemiSkimmedMin (Minnie Small's Youtube channel) Connect with Sandra: Website / Blog / Facebook / Instagram / Twitter On the next episode: Andreas Preis : Website / Instagram Be like Sandra and become a part of the YCP Facebook group!

Laura Roeder is the founder of Edgar, a new social media automation tool designed to prevent updates from going to waste. Laura began her entrepreneurial journey at the age of 22, when she quit a design job and decided to launch her first business. Since then, she founded B-School with Marie Forleo, has run successful courses of her own such as Creating Fame and Social Media Marketer; and she was named a Top 100 Entrepreneur under 30, in America. Edgar was created out of a need Laura had in her own business to more effectively manage social media – and so in 2014, Laura pivoted her business to dive into the SaaS world. Since launching in mid-2014, Edgar has hit over $150,000 in monthly recurring revenue, all the while bootstrapping the entire way. More than 3,000 customers are now using Edgar to help manage their social media. Playing Small Moment Laura always felt self-conscious, because she looked too young. She would go to various chamber of commerce events where she did not typically meet anyone close to her own age. Laura always felt like she stuck out. She attended a speed-coaching program at a conference where the coach laid into her and picked her apart – she needed to change her clothes and her voice. Eventually, Laura realized she had lived through her biggest fear and was not changed by it; she had survived. The Wake Up Call When Laura first moved to LA, she was doing social media consulting and helped her friend – an actor on Heroes – create a presence on social media. She walked home after a brainstorming meeting, realizing she didn’t fit into the mold she had created for that route. Style of Leadership Laura leads by giving ownership and letting her team truly own their projects. Most people start out by delegating but you’re still doing a lot. The way Laura leads, she has someone in charge of Customer Service and that person gets to make all the calls for their domain. What Are You Excited About? Laura is excited about Edgar, which launched a year ago. Edgar has grown super fast and they are now hiring a bunch of people.
