In this episode, Vicki Atkinson and Wynne Leon are thrilled to be with the talented artist and author, Danny Gregory.Danny shares his incredible journey from being an ad agency creative director for 30 years to becoming a renowned author and artist. His books and newsletters are notjust inspiring; they are a daily call to create and live with purpose. They read like good philosophy, urging us to embrace creativity every day.Our conversation with Danny was nothing short of inspiring. We delved into morning routines, where I meditate and Danny creates art before breakfast. Why? Because, as Danny delightfully quips, our inner critic tends to get up later.Vicki and I discovered the magic of illustrative journaling with Danny. Art, as he explains, helps us adapt to life's changes, builds our confidence, and gives us control over our perspective. It keeps us from being stuck in the mundane.Danny's enormously popular YouTube channel is less about teaching how to draw and more about understanding the chemical process of creativity. He reminds us that our inner critic is no more correct than we are. Talking with Danny is like having a good coach who not only teaches us skills but also provides the mindset to be most productive.Join us as we explore the scenic and beautiful places we go as creators. You won't want to miss this insightful and inspiring conversation with Danny Gregory! We know you'll love it!Links for this episodeEpisode 109 show notesDanny's weekly newsletterhttps://www.dannygregory.com/bookshttps://www.dannygregory.com/https://www.sketchbookskool.com/https://www.dannygregory.com/monkeyFrom the hosts:Vicki's book about resilience and love: Surviving Sue; Blog: https://victoriaponders.com/Wynne's book about her beloved father: Finding My Father's Faith; Blog: https://wynneleon.com/

This week, Danny talks to Beth Trembley about her new graphic novel, Look Again and how making art helped her process a traumatic event.About Beth:Beth grew up knowing herself to be a kid who could write but who could not draw. Everyone else in the family created visual art, but she just couldn't make anything that looked good.  In her late thirties, she realized that she could probably become a better draw-er if she approached it the way she approached writing:  daily practice, lots of experimentation, a sense of humor, and teachers!  Betty Edwards' Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain and Danny Gregory's The Creative License were the two most inspirational companions she had on her way.  Beth knew she didn't want to become a fine artist, but someone who used the visual to enhance storytelling.  And, she just wanted to be able to draw fun short comics that captured her adventures with her dogs.In April of 2014, her progress leaped forward when she enrolled in the first klasses offered by Sketchbook Skool and became exposed to so many different teachers and the wonderful community of fun, challenging sketchbook artists.  She began to draw and paint every day.  She created sketches of events and animals and people and trees and buildings and, really, everything.  She combined these with writing into illustrated journals.   She took other classes with teachers she encountered in Sketchbook Skool.  She attended SketchKon in California and loved meeting so many virtual colleagues! In 2017 Beth decided she was finally brave enough to get serious about creating comics, so she began what became several years of in-person and online study at both the Center for Cartoon Studies and the Sequential Artists Workshop.  The wonders of using comics as a medium for telling her own stories opened up possibilities and power she had barely imagined.  In 2019, after thirty years of college teaching, she retired to work more fully in comics.  In addition to creating comics, Beth currently teaches comics and graphic memoir online and in-person.  In particular, she runs the Graphic Memoir + Medicine group and teaches multi-week courses in graphic memoir for the Sequential Artists Workshop. Her graphic memoir, Look Again, is her first published work in comics.Look Again, Street Noise Books, 2022.   Purchase from bookshop.org or amazon.com or your local bookseller!Website:  https://elizabethtrembley.com/Instagram: @elizabeth_trembleyTeaching at Sequential Artists Workshop:  https://learn.sawcomics.org/Get your free ebook and essays at DannysEssays.com DannysEssays.compodcast@sketchbookskool.com Subscribe to Danny's weekly Essay at dannysessays.com. Season 3 of Art for All is called "The Curious Sketchbook." Each week, host Danny Gregory will be joined each week by artist, author, biologist, and nature journaler, John Muir Laws.  They will discuss drawing and painting, nature journaling, creativity, psychology, human brains, and much more in a free-wheeling conversation that promises to be inspiring and fun.Video recording available on Youtube. Listeners say:"I'm loving it!  Two of my favorite artist dudes.  I met Danny in person at the Pasadena SketchKon and have listened to John Muir Laws' videos and bought stuff from him to draw the birds in my backyard.  What a great pairing.  Like fine wine and a rich, mellow cheese.  You two can figure out who is which!" — Hugh O."Excellent! Curiosity is one of my very favorite things! Such an interesting discussion and it already provided several concepts I want to explore further. I hope you will expand on some of the ideas touched on in future episodes. I will look forward to this as a weekly workout for my brain... AND for my sketchbook/journal! :-)!" — Kim W."OMG! My heart skipped a beat when I read this news! My 2 favorite people in a podcast - AWESOME!!! I really hope it will be weekly and it is wonderful that it will be on YouTube too, feels like we are sitting with you rather than just listening. Best idea ever! Thank you, Danny!" — Charlotte F."There's been such a deficit of this kind of conversation in my life for so long that I'd begun to forget what was missing. Thank you, Danny and John, for letting us sit in on yours. I like that it was not scripted, neatly packaged, handed to us for consumption on a shiny over-produced plate. Instead, it was two creative intelligent people talking about things that interest them, and it challenged me to open my mind and engage with the topics in ways that were different for me. Lovely. I feel more myself than I have in some time." — Nancy P.

I speak to him about his journey to become a deliberate artist, and what it means to pursue self-expression inside a sketchbook. With reference to the many books he has authored, I pick his brain about what it means to "draw without talent", to "shut your inner critic", and to find beauty in "everyday matters". In this episode, I speak with Roisin Cure, an urban sketcher and illustrator living in Galway, Ireland. We talk about learning to draw from comic books, and the ways that urban sketching has transformed her art and her approach to life. I enjoy Roisin's work for the unique illustration style and for her focus on human activity. People are the subject of Roisin's work, and in this conversation I learn about the art that has helped her see the world in this way. We discuss learning to draw from comic books, and the useful habit of finding solutions to our problems in the styles of other artists. But despite drawing all her life, Roisin always thought she was yet to find her 'magic'. We begin this conversation with the story of how she finally found the magic, and her first attempts of urban-sketching. She shares also the experience of putting together multiple books of and about urban-sketching. We discuss her experience leading workshops, and how they have pivoted to online classes since the pandemic. Follow Roisin Cure on Insta, Twitter or visit her website. By drawing quickly, her work captures a domestic life that is nonetheless dynamic, people who are doing things, and settings that are alive with activity and color. If you are anything like me - you’ve struggled with how to deal with your inner critic over the years. There are a few things that have helped me deal with my inner critic, but I am always excited to hear what my peers have done to address this common issue in the art community. Here to share his unique and valuable perspective is the artist - Danny Gregory.  Danny is an artist, and he has written nearly a dozen internationally best-selling books on art and creativity. He is also the co-founder of Sketchbook Skool with tens of thousands of students worldwide. In our conversation, Danny opens up about how he got started as an artist, why he loves working on “Zines,” how he deals with his inner critic, what it takes to stay creative, and much more. I know you’ll get a ton of benefit from Danny’s thoughtful perspective.  Find your people! If you’ve been around the Savvy Painter community for any stretch of time, you know that I am passionate about encouraging artists like you to find your people. Let’s face it - life as an artist can be a lonely existence - but it doesn’t have to be! Even back in the ’90s, artists like Danny Gregory found a way to connect with peers who would encourage and challenge them in their creative pursuits. Discovering an artist from eastern Oregon by flipping through a “Zine” at Tower Records in New York City changed Danny’s life. He quickly befriended this artist via correspondence, and the two went on many trips together. Have you found your people yet?  Why “Zines” are so appealing Speaking of “Zines,” have you ever encountered one before? When Danny mentioned reading zines in Tower Records back in the 90’s I had a total flashback to my college years. For my millennial followers - zines or fanzines are publications produced by enthusiasts of a particular niche interest. Traditionally, zines are circulated free of charge, or for a nominal cost to defray postage or production expenses. There are so many amazing things you can do with the zine medium - and according to Danny, they are starting to make a comeback! Nurturing a creative focus  A few years ago, Danny wrote a book called “Art Before Breakfast.” I love that title by the way! His book explored several small ways he incorporated his drive for creativity each day. From keeping a sketchbook next to the kettle in the kitchen to sketching an image while waiting for his wife to finish shopping - there are a ton of helpful ideas that artists like you can use. At the heart of Danny’s message is this - you can fit creativity and art making throughout your day if you just redefine what that means. For many of you - Danny’s approach will be a bit of stretch - after all, we are conditioned to think of “Art-making” as a structured and specific time we set aside.  Dealing with the inner critic  Another book Danny wrote is called, “Shut Your Monkey: How to Control Your Inner Critic.” In this book, Danny explains how he’s dealt with and learned to live with his inner critic. Do you still struggle with silencing your inner critic? If so - I can’t recommend Danny’s book enough! He dove deep into where the inner critic comes from in our minds and how to better understand it. Danny discovered that the voice of the inner critic actually is there to protect us from making risky decisions - which is great when it comes to danger - not so great when it comes to creating art. Make sure to check out the links to Danny’s website and his books in the resources section - I know that many of you will find them helpful!  Outline of This Episode [1:15] I introduce my guest, Danny Gregory. The Creative Introvert Podcast

Play Episode Listen Later Dec 17, 2018 13:31

I'm a massive fan of 'best of' lists, especially when it comes to books, and I figured it would be a nice way to start rounding up the year. For the first time, I was pretty consistent this year in keeping track of what I was reading, averaging about 4 books a month - but I will admit I finished probably half of them. I'm a big believer in putting a book down when it stops interesting you. There are too many good books out there. All but one of these are non-fiction, so apologies if that isn't your jam, but if you listen to this podcast you'll likely be interested in most of these topics anyway, so fingers crossed you find at least one book that piques your curiosity. I'd also love to know what your favourite books were this year, I'm always up for recommendations.   1) Tribe of Mentors by Tim Ferriss I've been an embarrassingly big fan of Tim Ferriss for many years now, his books and his podcast - and this book kind of combines both. It is basically a reference book Tim created for himself, asking his world-class most expert buddies for advice on some of his most pressing questions. Questions like: How could I be kinder to myself? How could I better say “no” to the trivial many to better say “yes” to the critical few? How could I best reassess my priorities and my purpose in this world? I love the concept, of seeking council from the best, and if you have the contacts - you might as well use 'em. And if you don't well you can read this book.   2) Shrinking Violets by Joe Moran I stumbled upon this author at a talk he gave in Brighton last year, and I knew I had to have him on the podcast. Fortunately, despite being a shrinking violet, he said yes. This book is a fascinating and really quite sweet look at what it means to be shy, and as someone who often avoids the subject of shyness because I don't want people to confuse it for introversion, it was an important read for me.   3) Your Press Release is Breaking My Heart by Janet Murray Another hero of mine, Janet Murray is the author of this next book and one I prescribe regularly to any of my clients or just people I meet, anyone who wants to get their work out to the masses via the press and influencers. I love how detailed yet simple Janet manages to make this topic of PR and how she does acknowledge what it's like to be an introvert when you're trying to reach out to the press.     4) 12 Rules For Life by Jordan Peterson If you've been listening to this podcast recently (or if you listened to the episode of The Seeker and the Skeptic on the book club we went to), you probably won't be surprised to hear this entry. Some of his ideas are questionable, yes, but there is so much wisdom buried in this book - which is basically a self-help book. But unlike most other self help books I've ever read, there's something about Peterson's words that hit me at a deep level, it kind of shakes your core - at least, it does for me. Regardless of what you think of the man, I think it's worth giving this book a go, at least to understand what he's actually trying to say.   5) The Creative License by Danny Gregory Another podcast guest, this book comes from Danny Gregory who has been a real inspiration to me. I read this book during the summer while I was feeling particularly uninspired and well, sweaty, and this was a reminder of all the possibilities that creativity holds, and how you can start super small - just putting pen to paper - and what a difference that makes.   6) The Artist's Way by Julia Cameron Danny takes a lot of his inspiration from this legendary book by Julia Cameron, and I decided to read this for the second time earlier in the year. If you haven't heard of it, it's basically more of a course than a regular book, and Julia walks you through 12 weeks of 'artist recovery' - yes, it's based on the 12 Steps program and has a lot of God talk - but regardless of how you feel about that, it has some real gems that I think I'll be using for the rest of my life.   7) How To Change Your Mind by Michael Pollan Increasingly one of my interests has become the use of plants and plant medicine for healing, both physically and mentally - and let's say it, spiritually. You might have caught the Year of Fun episode back in March where I talked about my trip to Peru, and my experience with plant medicine there. Again, not for everyone - seriously not for everyone - but we are definitely at a turning point in our cultural attitude to these consciousness-altering substances, and I can't but help be excited for the possibilities they have, if used correctly. Michael Pollan is brilliant at explaining the why behind all this renewed attention for psychedelics, the history, the science and everything in between. One for the seekers and the skeptics.   8) Volcanic Momentum by Jordan Ring One more podcast guest for you here, and like I mentioned on that show, I've read a hell of a lot of books on productivity and time management - but this was a truly great read. I flew through it, and never once felt patronised or like Jordan was trying to get me to do something unreasonable - this guy walks the talk, and I really clicked with his message. If you're looking to get 2019 off to a momentous start, then this one is definitely worth checking out.   9) Mythos by Stephen Fry Oh my... this is the one I'm most excited about now because I'm still currently reading it. Since I picked it up, I basically haven't been able to stop thinking about it or how much I just want to be reading it. And it definitely sticks out of this list, because it's entirely based on myth - the Greek myths to be exact. And I've been interested in the Ancient Greeks since I was at school, but always felt frustrated when I tried to dig deeper. For one, there are a LOT of characters to keep track of. Plus, the stories are so nutty that when you read them without some of Stephen Fry's humour, they don't seem to reach modern minds properly. Fry is the perfect person to retell these tales, in my opinion, and if you have any interest in archetypes, legends, bizarre stories and the etymology of words (which I am very much) I highly recommend this tome.   10) The Creative Introvert by... Me. Awkward... Yes, I am putting my own book on my list of best books I read in 2018 because what kind of a message would I be sending to you otherwise?? Honestly, it took me a while of battling with this - it's been officially in the works since January 2018 but I really have been working on it for a good three years in terms of the ideas and activities in there. It was only in the very last edits back in November that I started to LIKE this book though - which, if you've ever written or created anything you probably know how that feels. We're our own worst critics. And whilst there'll always be bits I'll want to change and update, I have come to the conclusion that this is the best I could do up to this point, in explaining to others HOW to build a business or freelance career in a way that not only works as a creative introvert, but specifically for YOU - a reference book that allows you to pick and choose what appeals to you, specifically. I don't know many people offering something like that, so I hope it provides a missing piece in the entrepreneurial creative self-help space. And I hope you enjoy it, should you choose to get yourself a copy.   And I'll mention the bonuses I'm offering one more time before the offer runs out on December 31st - basically, if you order the book BEFORE then, you'll get your hands on goodies worth around $700, including access to the League of Creative Introverts (my online community), a companion guide eBook and 6 months of book club calls that will begin in the new year. Phew - all done. Hope you enjoy any of the books you pick from this list, and again - I'd love to read your recommendations too. If you leave a rating and review on iTunes (here's how to do that) I will be as happy as a kitten playing with a laser beam (or sob into my pillow, depending on what you write.)   POWERED BY PATREON This podcast is made possible only by means of my generous supporters on Patreon. Thank you! She used to take photos and print and bind photo books, but now her sketchbooks serve the same purpose. Liz compares herself to other travel sketchers and describes how she wants to document everywhere she’s been, not just one sketch a day. Sometimes she does up to 20 sketches a day. Move from architecture In architecture, it’s important to keep a kind of “idea book” where you keep sketches of buildings and ideas. Liz says she knew it was important, but just never sketched, until she found Danny Gregory. His work opened up sketching for her to include other subjects and mediums. This also opened up an obsession to document her life which got her into sketching. Liz didn’t make a clean break with architecture but instead, about five years ago, she took 6 months off work. The reasons were many and she wanted to see if she could do something with her art. Things started moving, and Liz got to do both illustration projects and teaching. Liz felt she had more of a role to fill as an architect turned sketcher than as a pure architect. She enjoyed having more creative freedom than her profession allowed. Becoming a full-time artist and creating online courses The traditional advice for people wanting to work with their creative passion is to balance the time between a “day job” and their passion and transition gradually. Liz did nothing of that, hers was more of a sabbatical turned transition as the demands at her day job were too much to be able to handle a side business too. Liz struggled with gaining recognition locally in the beginning. She was getting more recognition online in the international scene. She also realised she was less into client work and more interested in creating a product, which in her case developed into online courses. Urban sketching in Australia When Liz started out urban sketching, there were just a handful of people in Australia who even knew what it was, but it has definitely grown now. There are groups all over, for example in Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Tasmania, South Australia and Perth. Mediums Liz primarily uses fountain pens with ink and watercolor for her urban sketching. She had been using fountain pens and ink for a long time, but watercolor was her “light bulb moment” and she says “This is what I’ve been looking for all my life”. With watercolor she was able to mix all the colors she wanted. Drawing from observation Liz says she was confident about drawing from her head already, due to her background in architecture, but drawing from observation was trickier. She had to go back to basics and relearn how to apply concepts, like for example perspective, to what she saw and wanted to draw. Teaching urban sketching Liz didn’t start out wanting to teach, but as she was getting more into the urban sketching community she was encouraged to teach. She now teaches online courses but also do workshops in urban sketching. “The major barrier to art is to change the way your brain thinks, to start thinking visually.” Liz focuses on teaching concepts in her courses, in contrast to “demonstrate and copy”. The concepts can be “how to see edges” or “how to see shapes”, for example. The concepts are followed by exercises to practice and understand these concepts, so you can then continue using them in your own art. Newcomer tips To get started in urban sketching, all you need is really paper and a pen or pencil, because the most important thing to learn is how to observe and translate that onto paper. Adding too many supplies can distract from that learning. However, if you want to do ink and wash, which is a very common from of urban sketching, Liz recommends getting a permanent fineliner and a watercolor kit. Don’t worry too much over materials and supplies though, she says, it’s better to just get started. It is a journey and you will figure out what suits you and your art. It will change over time, and starting out with a lot of research on materials will likely just overwhelm you. Making art regularly One common problem to making art is to actually make time for it, to show up. Liz describes that as she was starting out, she dedicated some time after dinner every day to do a sketch. She also recommends to go along with an Urban Sketchers group nearby, and joining them sketching. Liz describes how she wants to create a kind of visual diary, a record of what she did that week, so that motivates her to keep sketching even in busy times. ##Feedback Send feedback to hello at artsupplyposse dot com

This week we are delighted to have Danny Gregory from Sketchbook Skool on the podcast. In fact, delighted is pretty much an understatement, especially for Sandra who had to decide what outfit she would wear for our voice-only podcast. I'm sure if you love art and drawing you'll know all about Danny Gregory, but just in case you've had your head buried under a sketchbook for the last few years, let me tell you a little more. Danny spent three decades working as one of New York's leading advertising directors. When his wife had a tragic accident which left her paralyzed, Danny started drawing and keeping a journal as a sort of therapy to help him come to terms with what happened. He has been drawing ever since. He also used drawing to help him cope with the death of his wife through another accident years later. Danny has written several books, some of which show his beautiful journal sketches alongside his words, we talk about some of them in the podcast including A Kiss Before You Go and Shut Your Monkey. A few years ago Danny got together with Koosje Koene to form Sketchbook Skool. Danny never dreamed he would end up teaching people to draw, but now he is inspiring people all over the world to pick up a pen or pencil and start drawing again. You can find out more about Danny Gregory on his blog or at https://sketchbookskool.com

You know that nagging little voice in your head that holds you back and makes you doubt yourself? Today we're talking about what you can do to quiet down your inner critic so you can innovate and generate creative flow with Danny Gregory. Danny spent most of my life not believing he was artistic in any way. Fifteen years ago he started drawing, and it changed his life. It led to travel, meeting people, getting books published, but most of all it transformed the way he saw and experienced the world. Before this change he spent three decades as one of New York's leading advertising creative directors and has created award-winning, global campaigns for clients like Chase, JPMorgan, American Express, IBM, Burger King, Ford, Chevron and many others. Through his nearly dozen books, including Shut Your Monkey Danny has shown thousands of people how to ignite their inner artists, embrace their creativity and tell their stories. From Boston to Beijing, people who haven't drawn since grade school have picked up the creative habit, publish books of their own and show and sell their artwork. Danny is a co-founder of Sketchbook Skool, a video-based art school designed to inspire creative storytelling through illustrated journaling. While this may seem a bit melodramatic, there are serious shifts underway that are undermining and changing the status quo of art education. Right off the bat, Andrew brings on special guest Danny Gregory whose blog post, “Let’s Get Rid of Art Education in Schools,” had the art teaching world all worked up. Love it or hate it, the article brings up some interesting points and got Andrew and fellow Art Ed Radio podcast host, Tim Bogatz, thinking about the current reality of art education (7:30). Tim and Andrew discuss advocacy strategies and how art teachers can take a stance in the face of shifting paradigms to champion our programs, whether these programs are more traditional or new and more inclusive to the world outside art (13:50). "You have to be able to suspend judgment in order to make creative work.  There's a time for judgment but there's also a time for productivity." "You have to decide that your life and the work that you are doing matters more than this engagement with this stupid voice in your head." Few things are more personal than how we grieve. While society is often quick to judge and volumes have been written about the process, no one can know how we individually feel pain, love and loss. In the end though, it’s like so many things in life. We bring to it our innate talents and skills and summon up our strengths to do that which is so difficult. In the case of Danny Gregory, he would reach into his talents as an artist and designer to bring color and life to the darkness of grieving.  His graphic memoir of that experience is A Kiss Before You Go: An Illustrated Memoir of Love and Loss.
