Sean of the South is here!!!!!!!!!! This is one of my very favorite conversations. Sean's writing it SO touching and memorable. Sean recorded this one OUTSIDE with some beautiful scenery behind him so enjoy the sound of the birds and the wind :). Join us as Sean opens up about his tumultuous past, including the long-lasting impact of his father's tragic death by suicide and the complexity it added to his formative years. Despite dropping out of school in the seventh grade and facing rejection from a prestigious writing program, Sean's determination led him to create the Sean of the South blog, a turning point in his life and career. Writing became his sanctuary, allowing him to process his experiences and connect with others. During the pandemic, a significant health scare pushed Sean and his wife Jamie to live differently, biking across four states on a tricycle and rediscovering the beauty of simplicity and the importance of disconnecting from technology. Reminiscing about a time when bicycles filled neighborhoods, Sean expresses a longing for the simplicity and connection of his youth, wishing today's children could experience the same. Emphasizing the importance of truly living rather than merely existing, Sean speaks about the concept of 'Trail Magic' and the belief that everything happens for a reason. In a touching moment, Sean reflects on how the burdens of the past become treasured in later life, he even whistles for us, a poignant reminder of finding joy in simple acts! This episode is a testament to the power of storytelling and the profound impact of embracing one's past to shape a better future. ** Purchase your copy of You are My Sunshine here >> https://amzn.to/3VyICVX Learn more about Sean here >> https://seandietrich.com/ Read Dearest Brother here >> https://seandietrich.com/dearest-brother/ See Sean perform live! On this episode, we have the ridiculous joy of welcoming Sean Dietrich to the pod. Sean, who also writes under the name Sean of the South, is one of the most creative people I know. He writes long form, short story, fiction, memoir, narrative essay, some of the absolute best stuff on social media, and as of this fall, Kinfolk, one of my favorite novels of all time. I feel a little like a sloth when I think about Sean's productivity, but he's such a nice guy, I can only be happy for him (and for us!). I'll say no more and just let you listen in because this guy doesn't need any more introduction from a Northerner or anyone else. Sean Dietrich is a columnist, novelist, and stand-up storyteller known for his commentary on life in the American South. His work has appeared in Newsweek, Southern Living, Reader's Digest, Garden and Gun, The Tallahassee Democrat, the Birmingham News, The Mobile Press Register, and his column appears in newspapers throughout the U.S. He has authored fifteen books, he is the creator of the Sean of the South Podcast, and makes appearances on the Grand Ole Opry. What does it mean to pursue goodness? Have we slighted it? Let's stay rooted in our deep and worthy ordinary virtues even though they aren't on a typical list for new year's resolutions. "I'd really like to be like Ted Lasso." Do you agree with Christie on this? Ted Lasso makes goodness and kindness appealing and powerful. *viewer discretion advised for R rated moments* True goodness fights for you, inspires you and makes you braver and bolder. We couldn't wait to talk with Sean Dietrich about his new book, You Are My Sunshine, but let's be honest, what we really couldn't wait for was having his wife Jamie on the podcast. She claims she's never been on a podcast with Sean before, so I guess that makes us ground-breaking? Move over Diane Sawyer--The Stories Between Us is where you can find the never-before-heard debut interview with Jamie Dietrich. And she spills all the goods on Sean, including the fact that he never knows the terms of his writing contracts (only she does) and her tactics to get him writing again if he's falling behind.
Sean Dietrich is definitely one of our new favorite authors.

The joy and benefits that this can bring abour are endless. But there may even be a few things fire can do for you that you've never thought about... Health benefits: https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/25387270/ Chew on this... campires create a space for difficult conversations because everyone is looking into the flames and not directly at each other, it's easier to approach more sensitive topics without being confrontational. Because a shared fire lowers our defenses in the best of ways, we can story tell, and truth tell, and spread the warmth of hope and grace and reassurance. Gathering around a flame is primal and precious and perfectly healing and while it's dangerous to play with matches, it's life-changing to campfire. Sean Dietrich brings you a surprise podcast special, intended especially for Christmas Eve night. This episode is for young and old alike. For the socially distanced, the elderly, the quarantined, the newly homeschooled, the unemployed, the sick, and the downhearted. Meant to be savored from a comfortable chair, with eyes closed, lights dimmed, and the twinkly tree glowing in the dark. Whatever you do, do not listen to this episode before the Eve of Christmas. Save it for then.
Shawn admits to Maile that, unbeknownst to her, he did apply for their family to move to New Zealand. He gushes about a book he's currently reading (although he's not sure he's allowed to talk about it). Maile's recent delight is parenting the youngest two. But what they really dig into is the old saying, "Write what you know"...and how to decide how much more you need to learn about something before writing about it. A few of the topics discussed: Sean Dietrich (aka Sean of the South) Anthony Doerr's All the Light We Cannot See
Everyone loves a good story. Especially in these hard times. Or maybe not. Should we be swapping yarns while the world burns? Maybe we need less levity, more solemnity, when we see so much wrong in the world. As a professional storyteller, Sean Dietrich brings together the levity and solemnity in his new book, Will the Circle Be Unbroken? published by Zondervan. Also known as Sean of the South, Dietrich regales readers with stories of family, faith, and food. But this memoir of learning to believe you’re going to be ok deals with serious themes of fatherhood, suicide, education, and physical abuse. In his novel Stars of Alabama, published last year, Dietrich likewise explores themes of poverty, faith, friendship, religious hypocrisy, and hope.Sean of the South joins me on Gospelbound to discuss hope and heartache during the best and worst of times. Maybe we can even get him to tell a few good stories. This episode of Gospelbound is brought to you by the Sing! Global Conference from modern hymnwriters Keith and Kristyn Getty. This four-day online event will bring together an array of more than 100 Christian leaders and artists from around the world—such as John Piper, Trip Lee, Joni Eareckson Tada, and David Platt—to examine how the songs of Scripture build deep believers in the 21st century. Register here by Tuesday, August 25, and save 20 percent with the code GOSPELBOUND.

This week Colter and Peter hopped on a call with writer, musician, lover of good dogs and fellow southerner, Sean Dietrich of Sean of the South. We talked about the SEC Championship Game, growing up in the south, storytelling, American music history and much more. From Sean's website, https://seandietrich.com:As a child, I liked to write. I filled up notebooks with tales of the high-seas, shameless vixens, and steamy scenarios combining both of the aforementioned. My fifth grade teacher found one of my notebooks and scanned through it. She told me I wrote with too many commas, and encouraged me to pursue a career in construction work. That, old, woman, never, liked, me.Years later, I learned my teacher had left the school. She took a job at the Piggly Wiggly as a cashier. I went to visit the old girl, to show her the man I'd grown into. She seemed genuinely glad to see me. And I was just as glad to find her wearing that red apron for a living. After visiting for a few minutes, I realized something I'd never noticed before. Beneath her hardshell exterior was a regular lady, working from nine to five for pennies. She was doing the best she could with her life. Just like me.Before I left, she asked me what kind of work I did.At the time, I worked in construction.
This is Colter's version of MJ's Flu Game. It goes just about as well. There are car wrecks! There is go-kart racing! Hywel is still in Germany. We learn how to say Roll Tide in various Scandinavian languages. We dealt with a lot of technical issues this week, but as always this is free and you volunteered for this. Enjoy!
