When we enter the autumn of our menstruation years in our 40s and start to experience what many call perimenopause, we can easily think we should keep pushing through even though our bodies, minds and emotional landscape are transforming profoundly. (Alexandra and Sjanie, the co-founders or Red School call this phase the Quickening, or the autumn of our menstruating years). Our guest today specialises in helping women in midlife recover from burnout so they can rise stronger and thrive longer. Jolinda Johnson is the author of Resilience: 10 Ways to Recover from Burnout and Exhaustion, and works as a Life and Health Coach, as well as a Menopause Coaching Specialist. In today's conversation we explore the four phases of burnout; from feeling wired and tired, to health challenges to full-on exhaustion, all the way to an official burn out diagnosis and major life changes. Jolinda explains how tracking these phases offer us many opportunities for course correction before we find ourselves flat on our back. So this one is for you especially if you're in perimenopause, but it relevant to anyone experiencing burnout in any life phase. We explore:Jolinda's definition of burnout, which is chronic stress without recovery, is characterised by exhaustion, cynicism, and decreased capacity for your life roles. What menstrual cycles changes, as well as other health symptoms can show us about our current levels of burnout. Why we need to set better boundaries with ourselves, and how to do it. ---Receive our free video training: Love Your Cycle, Discover the Power of Menstrual Cycle Awareness to Revolutionise Your Life - www.redschool.net/love---The Menstruality Podcast is hosted by Red School. Your career deserves protection—act now at https://www.doctorpodcastnetwork.co/setforlife_____Burnout and distress are pervasive in medicine, but improving physician well-being requires more than just resilience training and pizza parties. In this episode, Dr. Colin West shares the latest research on physician burnout, highlighting how workplace culture significantly impacts well-being. He and Dr. Bradley Block discuss the flawed "just tough it out" mindset ingrained in medical training, the systemic factors that contribute to distress, and the importance of aligning work with meaning, values, and purpose (MVPs) to maintain fulfillment in a medical career. They also explore practical solutions for physicians in various practice settings, from small groups to large institutions, emphasizing how addressing inefficiencies and reducing administrative burdens can enhance both job satisfaction and patient care. The conversation covers the role of coaching, social connection, and leadership in fostering a healthier medical culture, offering valuable insights for individual physicians and healthcare leaders alike..Three Actionable Takeaways:Burnout is not an individual problem—it's systemic: While personal coping strategies help, real change requires addressing workplace inefficiencies, excessive administrative burdens, and leadership approaches.Well-being initiatives must go beyond surface-level fixes: Yoga and mindfulness have value, but true solutions require structural changes like reducing unnecessary tasks and fostering social connections.Investing in physician well-being benefits everyone: When doctors are supported, they perform better, stay in their jobs longer, and deliver higher-quality patient care. Burnout isn't just prevalent in today's culture—it's practically glorified. We've been conditioned to believe that pushing harder, running faster, and sacrificing more is the only path to success. But I've discovered there's a fundamental flaw in this approach: when we're fueled by fear, anxiety, or scarcity, we're drawing from a finite energy source that inevitably depletes us.Over the years, I've experienced a profound shift in my relationship with work. Despite working more hours than ever before in my entrepreneurial ventures, I feel less burnout and more alignment than at any previous point in my career. The secret? I've learned to source my energy from love rather than fear. When we operate from unconscious patterns and limiting beliefs inherited from culture, family, or religion, we're constantly fighting against ourselves. This creates tension in our system and eventually leads to exhaustion. But when we can align with a more authentic way of being that's in congruence with love, we tap into an infinite energy source that fuels creativity, connection, and inspiration. In this episode, Alex and I dive deep into what it takes to make this pivotal shift from being pushed by fear to being pulled by love. What you'll learn:The fundamental difference between being pushed by fear versus being pulled by loveHow to identify when you're operating from unconscious patterns and fear-based belief systemsPractical techniques to shift your perspective when facing challenging tasksWhy traditional "hustle culture" leads to burnout and how to work intensely without depleting yourselfThe role of surrender in accessing deeper sources of energy and inspirationHow to develop courage as a key ingredient for authentic livingTechniques for raising your standards by lowering your tolerance for what doesn't serve youWhy understanding your unique design and natural rhythms is crucial for sustainable successThe transformative power of gratitude in shifting from resentment to appreciationIf you're tired of feeling exhausted, if you're questioning whether the hustle is worth it, or if you're simply seeking a more sustainable way to pursue your passions—this episode is for you.I've walked the path from burnout to alignment, and I know firsthand that it's possible to do meaningful, impactful work without sacrificing your wellbeing. The frameworks and tools shared in this conversation aren't just theoretical—they're the exact practices that have transformed my relationship with work and allowed me to access a deeper, more sustainable source of energy.Your life is in direct proportion to what you tolerate. If you want a better life, just tolerate less. By choosing to source your energy from love rather than fear, you can break free from the burnout cycle and discover what it truly means to work in flow.Join Alex and I as we explore how courage, surrender, and self-understanding can help you tap into an infinite source of inspiration that makes even challenging work feel energizing rather than draining.Legal Disclaimer: The information and opinions discussed in this podcast are for educational and entertainment purposes only. Did you know you can specialize when you work in primary care? As a surgical PA, I've worked in various surgical subspecialities, but the concept of primary care subspecialities was brand new to me. My guest today, Alex Childs, shares his story of specializing in pharmacogenetics as a primary care PA. Alex is a PA with a Doctor of Medical Science degree working in family medicine in Utah. Alex's doctorate research focused on implementing genetic testing in primary care. In practice, he has done this with hereditary cancer risk testing and pharmacogenetic testing. In today's episode, Alex shares what he loves about working in primary care and gives actionable tips on how to thrive as a primary care provider. Alex also explained what the heck pharmacogenetics is and how he uses it to provide high quality care and early interventions with his patients. He also describes how he began working as an medical science liaison (MSL) in industry while still working as a family medicine PA. I think my favorite part of our discussion was talking about how every medical provider can get their joy back when it comes to practicing medicine. Embracing Identity & Preventing Burnout with Lisa Bobyak (BONUS OFFERING - VIRTUAL WORKSHOP 3/20 - see details below)In this episode, Lisa Bobyak, a coach with 13 years of experience, shares her journey through motherhood, identity shifts, and burnout recovery. She uses the metaphor of flamingos—where white ones are mothers who give everything to their young—to highlight how many women pour themselves into others while neglecting their own well-being.Key Themes:•Identity Shifts & Motherhood: Lisa struggled with transitioning from a working mom to a stay-at-home mom, feeling societal pressure that made the shift difficult. She later embraced it but realized she initially resisted the change.•Burnout & Boundaries: Research on burnout, which has been studied since the 1960s, typically focuses on workplaces, but Lisa argues it affects stay-at-home moms, retirees, and caregivers as well. Setting boundaries is essential to preventing it.•Processing Emotions & Healing: By sitting with uncomfortable emotions for as little as 90 seconds, Lisa found relief from physical and emotional tension. Recognizing and honoring one's emotions can significantly impact overall well-being.•Intentional Living & Entrepreneurship: Lisa's coaching helps clients design lives they don't need a vacation from. She emphasizes slowing down, simplifying commitments, and embracing trade-offs rather than trying to do it all.Peaks & Valleys: Peaks: The autonomy and freedom of entrepreneurship, the power of intentionality, and the realization that slowing down creates space for clarity. Valleys: The dangers of overcommitment, self-neglect, and mistaking productivity for fulfillment.Advice to other women exploring entrepreneurship: Lisa urges women to “act as if” for 24–48 hours—trying on a new way of being to see what aligns with their needs. She encourages self-awareness, grace, and intentional decision-making.Connect with Lisa:•LinkedIn: Lisa Bobyak•Website: Living Fully BalancedOffering - Virtual Workshop -Thursday, March 20th, 6-7:00 pm CST On Zoom Full Capacity Living5 Keys to Keeping It All Together Without Falling ApartContact the Host, Kelly Kirk: Email: info.ryh7@gmail.com Get Connected/Follow: IG: @ryh_pod & @thekelly.tanke.kirk Facebook: Reclaiming Your Hue Facebook Page YouTube: http://www.youtube.com/@RYHReclaimingYourHue Credits: Editor: Joseph Kirk Music: Kristofer Tanke Thanks for listening & cheers to Reclaiming Your Hue!

In this episode, Dr. Jo Braid interviews Dr. Ettie Ben-Shabat, a physiotherapist specializing in neurological rehabilitation with expertise in neuro-imaging. Dr. Ben-Shabat emphasizes that when rehabilitation clinicians have a deep understanding of neurological imaging, it significantly enhances their ability to tailor treatments effectively and efficiently. This knowledge allows clinicians to pinpoint the exact brain areas affected, leading to more precise and targeted therapies, ultimately reducing uncertainty and stress in their practice. Furthermore, it boosts clinicians' confidence and job satisfaction by enabling them to make informed decisions and provide clearer guidance to patients and their families, thereby mitigating burnout and improving patient care outcomes.Resources:https://drjobraid.comhttps://brainrehabilitation.org/https://brainrehabilitation.org/about-ettie-ben-shabat/ Community Recognition Award by local member Phil Donato MP: https://www.parliament.nsw.gov.au/permalink?id=HANSARD-1323879322-143033 I acknowledge that I create this podcast on the traditional lands of the Wiradjuri people, who have been the custodians of this land around Orange, New South Wales, for thousands of generations.
