Michael Azerrad is an American author, music journalist, editor, and musician. He has written for publications such as Spin, Rolling Stone, and The New York Times. His 2001 US indie rock anthology, Our Band Could Be Your Life, is probably my favourite music book ever. The Amplified Come As You Are: The Story of Nirvana, is available to buy now. Spinning Out (another music podcast) We talk to artists about their favorite albums and go on wild tangents. Today we're talking with author Dan Ozzi. We talked about Jimmy Eat World's third album "Clarity," and also about his journey as a writer and his new book, Sellout. If you haven't checked out Dan's book, I would highly recommend it. We've brought it up on several previous episodes -- And if I do say so myself, it's up there with books like Our Band Could Be Your Life, which if you know me, that's saying a whole hell of a lot. The book documents the major label debuts of bands like Green Day, Jawbreaker, Jimmy Eat World, Against Me! and so many more. Check it out here: https://www.danozzi.com/books Subscribe to our Patreon: www.patreon.com/spinningoutpod
One of the earliest albums on the Spin list (January 1985), Husker Du's New Day Rising proves a fun favorite for both Matt and Tim. We talk the band's place in the Our Band Could Be Your Life of it all (i.e. 80s punk and early hardcore) and their sonic take on the line “it aggravates and it pacifies.” Matt brings two post-hardcore darlings to the table in Cursive and Thursday and talks abrasive music and catharsis.
If there’s anything we’ve learned this year, it’s that deep down, everyone loves ska. This week we provide yet another example of an unexpected band releasing a ska song: Screaming Females. They will be releasing a cover of The Selecter’s “On My Radio” next month. The song is being released as part of the deluxe edition of the comic series What’s The Furthest Place From Here? which is written by punk lover Matthew Rosenberg, who has written many popular comic books (Spiderman, Wolverine, etc)We got a sneak of Screaming Females’ “On My Radio” cover, and let me tell you, it is awesome. Good enough that it inspired us to bring them on the show to tell us about the tune and their relationship to ska. We also discuss the New Brunswick scene (Where Catch 22 are kings!), how guitarist Marissa Paternoster nearly played in The Slits, how drummer Jarret Dougherty’s bout of tendonitis led to an obsession with Our Band Could Be Your Life, The Minutemen, and DIY culture. And last and perhaps most importantly, we talk about Taylor Swift. If you enjoyed this episode, please share it with your friends, and on social media. It's a special Take 5, as we mark the 30th anniversary of Nirvana releasing Nevermind. This was the record that brought grunge into the mainstream, it changed the game not just for the Seattle sound, but catapulted it into a worldwide movement. To celebrate this iconic moment, I dug up some of my most treasured conversations from the Take 5 archives, with the people at the centre of the scene. You'll hear from Butch Vig, the producer who shaped Nevermind. From Jonathan Poneman, who signed Nirvana and co-founded Sub-Pop; the label at the centre of the scene. Billy Corgan will pop up, whose Smashing Pumpkins were another huge player in the scene. And we'll revisit my chat with Michael Azzerad, who penned a bestselling biography of Nirvana and also an iconic capture of the late '80s and early '90s indie scene in America, with Our Band Could Be Your Life. Nirvana's connection to Australia is significant too, and photographer Sophie Howarth will bring it close to home with her memories of hanging with the band and seeing them play on their only Australian tour. It's a wild ride, and I feel so privileged to have shared this space and these stories. So don the flanny, pull on the cords, let your dirty hair down, and revisit one of music's most loved era's. There is almost nothing drummer Peter Prescott can do that will overtake the shadow caused by his band Mission of Burma. In just a brief time in the early 80s they managed to set the template for what American post-punk should sound like. After only an album and an EP, the guys split up and did other projects, but the legend just continued to grow, culminating in being featured in the invaluable book Our Band Could Be Your Life. This provoked a victory lap in the early 2000s that resulted in more albums, tours, love and recognition and lasted over a decade. Today, with Burma behind him, Peter is focused on his excellent new band, Minibeast. We discuss how he views his career, how bands get labeled "cool", how he makes a living and what Minibeast is all about. Enjoy! www.minibeast.net

Fugazi mattered. From their strict $5 admission policy, to never selling merchandise to infamously preventing their audiences from slam dancing they lived and breathed the DIY ethic and set the standard for every other band to try to live up to. Their approach to the business side of music was admiral and impressive but insignificant if the music itself wasn’t great and it certainly was that. From the airtight rhythm section of Joe Lally and Brendan Canty to the perfectly unique vocal interplay of Ian McKaye and Guy Picciotto they were a perfect musical storm that made six incredible albums starting with 1990’s Repeater. A music journo with Spin, Rolling Stone, and The New York Times is probably most well known for his biography of Nirvana (published six months before Kurt's death), and his excellent book of essays on American indie bands "Our Band Could Be Your Life". It's the kind of book that makes you want to follow a family tree of music, no matter when you were born. When he came in to Take 5 back in 2010, he shared the five bands that changed his life, and spoke candidly about what it was like to be let into Kurt Cobain's inner circle. Talking Heads - "The Book I Read" The Beatles - "Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band" Fugazi - "Waiting Room" Nirvana - "Smells Like Teen Spirit" Dirty Projectors - "Gimme Gimme Gimme"

Michael Azerrad is one of the great rock journalists of the past 25 years. He wrote dozens of cover stories for Rolling Stone, he's written for SPIN, for the New York Times, and for lots of other esteemed institutions. He also wrote two of the great rock books ever written: "Come As You Are," a biography of Nirvana before Kurt Cobain died, and "Our Band Could Be Your Life," a survey of the American Underground Indie music scene of the 1980s. Michael is a rock drummer himself, and has a great perspective on where rock music is and has been.
