In this episode, we are speaking with Dr. Jo-Elle Mogerman, 15th President and CEO of the Philadelphia Zoo in its 164th year.Dr. Mogerman is deeply committed to conservation, Philadelphia at large, and connecting our communities to animals in a meaningful and inspiring way. She may be a Chicago gal at heart, but we welcome her here to the City of Brotherly Love and are so excited to learn about what she has been initiating and leading for the past 3 years right here in our very own backyard. And you all know that we talk about zoos over here, but we have yet to speak to an actual zoo and the oldest in the country at that! It's such an interesting, unexpectedly heartfelt conversation, but you know we are always going to bring it all back to the heart, and Dr. Mogerman brought it right to that heartspace for us.And you get to meet a 94-year-old Galapagos tortoise named “Mommy” who had 16 babies, and a little orangutan with the best comb-over ever named “Jambi.” My heart. The zoo has exciting plans for 2026 to celebrate the 250th anniversary of American independence. Be sure to plan several upcoming visits to see their exciting experiences, learn more about helping to conserve wildlife, and view the new Flamingo and Bear Country habitats. Thanks for listening, and lots of love.Episode Timestamps:Introduction: 00:16Interview: 7:29Show Notes:https://www.philadelphiazoo.org/
Episode 140 featuring Sydney Stephens was originally posted on July 1, 2024. This episode is a repost. Now, two years later, hearing how to safely interact with bears feels more relevant than ever. We're seeing the vilification of predators under the Trump administration in Alaska, Minnesota, and beyond. These animals are just trying to survive, and perhaps it is time that we humans learn how to coexist. --------In episode 140, we enter bear country. Now, we've talked about bears on the show before with bear biologist Garret Tovey (Episode 85). That episode is a must-listen if you are planning to enter the bear country and want to know some practical bear safety tips. In this episode, we sit down with another bear biologist, but this time have a chance to hear about the bigger picture of bear conservation as a whole and what we can do to better coexist with larger predators like bears. Sydney Stephens is an experienced biologist with expertise in research, teaching, and outreach. Her work spans diverse fields including biology, chemistry, and geography. She is passionate about community outreach, and engages in guest lectures and museum tours, and has worked internationally and with incarcerated populations. Fieldwork highlights include studying bears, sheep, and lions across Lake Tahoe, India, and Kenya. At the time of the original recording, she was conducting research on wild bear populations in Italy and the Yellowstone region of the United States. No parcel of land at Disneyland has had more title changes than this little wedge of Disneyland. It's perhaps the smallest land in Disneyland, but it has a history that goes back to nearly the beginning. And it's a history few know much about. Most know it as Bayou Country today, and many know it as Critter Country, home to Splash Mountain. But before that it was Bear Country, and before that it went for some time not as Indian Country but as the Indian Village. We look at all four eras which include many well-known attractions, shops and eateries. As part of our 70th anniversary celebration join us as we head into the back country to experience this very special corner of Disneyland. You'll learn some things you may never have known about the Happiest Place on Earth. ________________________________________________________ Disney Insights YouTube Page--Check it out and subscribe. On July 22nd 2010, Dave Akers and Gary Nall decided to take a sight seeing trip in Gary's small plane. What should have been a short flight before sunset turned into a fight for their lives after the plane got caught in a powerful down draft that caused them to crash almost 4,000 feet up a remote mountain side in the Alaskan wilderness. Despite their injuries, the men quickly discovered their only option was to attempt to hike off the mountain.

Understanding the Challenges of Black Bear Management: Insights from Stephen Vantassel In this comprehensive episode of the Living the Wildlife podcast, Stephen Vantassel, CWCP, ACE, shares his extensive expertise in wildlife control, focusing on the critical and timely issue of black bear management. As black bear populations continue to grow and reestablish themselves across the United States, their presence is increasingly felt in regions that were once devoid of large predators. This resurgence presents unique challenges and opportunities for wildlife management professionals and the general public, all of which are explored in depth during this episode. The Resurgence of Black Bear Populations Over the past few decades, black bear populations have made a remarkable comeback in various parts of the United States. Once limited to remote wilderness areas, these large mammals are now increasingly found in suburban and even urban settings. This growth in population is a testament to successful conservation efforts but also brings new challenges, especially in areas where human-bear interactions are becoming more common. Stephen Vantassel opens the discussion by highlighting the current state of black bear management. He explains that while the increasing presence of black bears is a positive sign of ecological restoration, it also raises important questions about how to manage these animals effectively. The primary responsibility for black bear management falls to state and federal agencies, which often limits the involvement of private wildlife control professionals. Despite this, the need for expertise in handling human-bear interactions is growing, making it crucial for private professionals to understand their role within the regulatory frameworks that govern wildlife management. The Role of State and Federal Agencies in Black Bear Management Stephen Vantassel emphasizes that black bear management is primarily overseen by state and federal agencies. These agencies are responsible for setting regulations, conducting research, and implementing conservation strategies to ensure the well-being of black bear populations while minimizing conflicts with humans. However, this centralized management approach often means that private wildlife control professionals have limited opportunities to engage directly in black bear management. Stephen underscores the importance of understanding bear behavior and the circumstances that can lead to aggressive encounters. For example, black bears may become more dangerous when they feel threatened, when they are protecting their young, or when they have become habituated to human food sources. Strategies to Reduce the Risk of Black Bear Attacks To mitigate the risks of black bear attacks, Stephen discusses various strategies and research-based principles that can be applied in ...
